Mission Veterans defensive end Mark Champion captured The Monitor’s Player of the Week after terrorizing the Sharyland High offense to lead the Patriots to a 27-16 victory over the Rattlers on Thursday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

Champion found himself around the ball constantly Thursday night, racking up 11 total tackles, including four tackles for loss and three sacks. He put the exclamation point on his dominating performance late during the fourth quarter, deflecting a pass into the air before coming down with the interception and running it back 45-yards for a touchdown, sealing the Patriots’ victory.

The Patriots have rattled off four straight wins since opening the season with back-to-back losses, sitting tied for first place in District 16-5A DII with the Mercedes Tigers.

Up next, the Patriots (4-2, 4-0) take on the PSJA Southwest Javelinas (0-5, 0-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes.

The PSJA Memorial Wolverines picked up their first win of the season, taking down the Valley View Tigers 31-14 on Friday at Tiger Stadium in Pharr.

The victory snaps an 18-game losing skid by the Wolverines, while also marking the first career victory by head coach Will Littleton.

“It’s fun to get that first win as a head coach but the big thing is for the kids,” Littleton said. “We came over to PSJA Memorial to change the culture and show them what winning football is about. So, it’s exciting to see their hard work pay off.”

The Wolverines jumped out to a 24-0 lead during the first half behind the hard nose running of running back Oziel Flores, who finished the night with a pair of scores, while receiver Isaac Rodriguez added a pair of touchdowns.

Up next, the Wolverines (1-4, 1-2) host the Roma Gladiators (2-4, 1-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

SHARYLAND PIONEER 40, ROMA 21: At Roma, the Diamondbacks picked up their third straight win, improving to 3-0 in district play.

The Diamondbacks’ defense swarmed to the ball against the Gladiators’ slot-T offense, led by linebacker Caleb Puentes and defensive tackle Daniel Villarreal.

Next for the Diamondbacks (4-1, 3-0) is a home contest against the Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets (1-5, 1-2) on Friday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

DISTRICT 31-6A

EDINBURG VELA 48, EDINBURG HIGH 7: At Edinburg, the SaberCats topped the crosstown rival Bobcats in a matchup of District 31-6A leaders.

Edinburg Vela (6-0, 4-0) senior quarterback Chase Campbell tossed four touchdowns passes for the second consecutive game to lead the SaberCats.

Running back/receiver P.J. Rivera recorded a hat trick with two rushing touchdowns and one receiving score against the Bobcats.

Edinburg High scored on its opening possession of the game with a methodical drive capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Roland Abrego, but that was all the success the SaberCats’ defense allowed.

Edinburg Vela kicker Job Juarez added a pair of field goals. Receivers Carlos Tamez, Justin Vega and tight end Jaxson Shupe hauled in Campbell’s three other touchdown passes.

Next for the SaberCats is a matchup against PSJA High (3-1, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats will look to bounce back against PSJA North (3-1, 1-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

MISSION HIGH 42, PSJA HIGH 41: At Hidalgo, the Eagles blocked a 38-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining to secure a thrilling one-point win over the Bears.

Mission High (4-2, 3-1) senior quarterback Kevin Guerra engineered a fourth-quarter drive and capped it with a rushing touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to take a 42-41 lead.

PSJA High responded as sophomore quarterback Jaime Lopez threw a 50-yard pass to senior receiver Viggo Lopez, which set up the last-minute field goal attempt that was stuffed by defensive lineman Ashton Guzman for the game-saving play.

Mission’s Guerra finished with three rushing touchdowns and a pair of touchdown passes to receiver Joel Pedraza.

PSJA High was led by the electric play from sophomore quarterback Jaime Lopez as he scored three rushing touchdowns and threw three more scores to receivers Andrew Castillo, Christian Gamboa and Viggo Lopez.

The Eagles move on to face La Joya Juarez-Lincoln (0-5, 0-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at La Joya ISD Stadium.

The Bears will look to rebound against Edinburg Vela (6-0, 4-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

The District 31-6A football game between the PSJA North Raiders and Edinburg North Cougars previously scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at PSJA Stadium in Pharr is under lightning delay. The game is tentatively scheduled to begin after 8 p.m. This story will be updated as information becomes available.

PSJA North running back Isaac Gonzalez’s 120-yard rushing day against La Joya High during Week 5 catapulted the senior past the 4,000-rushing yard mark for his career.

A four-year letterman, Gonzalez has largely been the engine that has made the PSJA North offense go during his time playing varsity football.

He ran for 935 yards as a freshman, 1,418 as a sophomore and 1,266 as a junior in just eight games. So far this season, he’s averaging 106.3 rushing yards and five total touchdowns.

With a new starter at quarterback making his debut due to injury in Week 5, the Raiders leaned upon their rugged runner to lead the way. The result was a 63-0 beatdown of La Joya High to send the Raiders to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in District 31-6A.

Gonzalez and the Raiders will look to stay hot when they take on Edinburg North at 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

RETURN TO PLAY

Mission High suffered a 34-14 defeat at the hands of Edinburg High during Week 5, but a bright spot for the Eagles was the play of running back Damian Cortez.

The senior Cortez entered the year as the Eagles’ No. 1 running back but has battled injuries early on, which has forced him to miss time in multiple games.

Cortez delivered his best performance of the year against the Bobcats last Thursday, and more importantly, was able to play the entire game. He finished with 120 yards on just 17 carries, bringing his season total to 179 rushing yards on 29 carries for an average of 6.2 yards per touch.

Cortez will be vital to the Eagles’ playoff chances down the stretch of District 31-6A competition.

The Eagles are set to face PSJA High at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo.

PANTHERS QBS SHARE SPOTLIGHT

The Weslaco High Panthers began the season with just three returning starters on its roster, but that hasn’t stopped them from a 3-0 start to the year.

A two-quarterback system has worked wonders for the Panthers’ offense led by senior Justin Rodriguez and junior Ethan Gallegos.

Rodriguez is 14-for-24 with 243 passing yards and one touchdown pass, while Gallegos is 20-for-27 with 174 passing yards. On the ground, Rodriguez leads the team with 194 yards compared to 65 rushing yards on 12 attempts for Gallegos. Both have scored three rushing touchdowns this season.

“They’ve made each other better competing for a starting position,” Weslaco High head coach Roy Stroman said. “We don’t know who is going to start, it depends on who comes in with a hot hand at practice. They haven’t really separated themselves from each other. We do have a runner, we do have a thrower, but they both can run the ball and throw the ball.”

Weslaco’s two signal callers are set to lead the Panthers into a battle against District 32-6A playoff hopeful Brownsville Rivera (2-3, 0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

McAllen High’s Hunter Curl and Christian Echazarreta earned The Monitor’s Co-Players of the Week after combining for five touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 42-28 victory Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Curl completed 12 of 15 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns, adding 54 yards and one score on the ground. Echazarreta hauled in seven of Curl’s 12 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns, including back-to-back scores of 74 and 75 yards during the second half to put the game out of reach.

The Bulldogs enter the district-wide bye week in a four-way tie for second place with Brownsville Veterans, McAllen Rowe and Weslaco East, each holding a 3-1 record in District 16-5A DI play.

McAllen High (4-1, 3-1) returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, against Weslaco East (3-1, 3-1) at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.
