UTRGV baseball to host two prospect camps

The UTRGV baseball team announced plans to host a pair of prospect camps Nov. 7 and Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg.

These prospect camps are designed to give campers ages 14 and up the opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities while being evaluated by NCAA Division I baseball coaches. Campers will get an opportunity to meet the UTRGV baseball coaches and tour the facilities, while the coaches get the opportunity to see the campers firsthand. Campers will be evaluated in hitting, defense, pitching, speed and arm strength.

Registration must be completed online and is $125 for those being evaluated only as pitchers, and $150 for position and two-way players. Space is limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Campers can register online at https://camps.jumpforward.com/UTRGVCamps/.

Questions can be directed to camp director Kyle Kilgo by calling or texting him at (512) 755-4176 or sending an email to [email protected].

The camps and academies are open to any and all entrants (limited only by number, age, grade level and/or gender). NCAA rules prohibit representatives of UTRGV Athletics interests (boosters) who are not legally responsible for a prospective student-athlete (grades 7-12) from providing any expenses to attend a showcase, camp or clinic. Violations of this could result in loss of NCAA eligibility for the prospective student-athlete.

Upper-Valley Football Roundup: Lightning, rain leads to postponements across RGV

Severe thunderstorms rolled through the upper-Valley on Friday, leading to delays and cancellations in the Week 8 football schedule.

As of press time Friday, four contests have been moved to today, with others still pending lightning delays.

The highly anticipated Snakeskin Classic between Sharyland High and Sharyland Pioneer experienced several lightning delays before officially announcing the game’s postponement five minutes after its original kickoff time. The District 16-5A DII matchup has been moved to 11 a.m. today at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

District 31-6A featured the most interruptions of any district, with three of four contests postponed or cancelled. La Joya Juarez-Lincoln forfeited its contest against Edinburg Vela, announcing the cancellation of the contest Tuesday due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Meanwhile, Edinburg Economedes’ bout with Mission High was pushed back to noon at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes, while the matchup between La Joya High and Edinburg High is set for 10 a.m. at La Joya ISD Stadium.

In District 16-5A DI, McAllen High’s contest against Brownsville Pace was postponed until 1 p.m. at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

McALLEN MEMORIAL 42, DONNA HIGH 14: At Donna, McAllen Memorial jumped out to a 28-7 lead over Donna High in the third quarter before a lightning strike in the area led to a delay.

The Mustangs added a pair of touchdowns following the delay, running past the Redskins to improve to 6-0 in District 16-5A DI.

McAllen Memorial (6-1, 6-0) returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday in a pivotal district matchup against Brownsville Veterans (5-2, 5-1) at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

WESLACO EAST 48, LA JOYA PALMVIEW 6: At Weslaco, rain and lightning couldn’t slow down the Wildcats, using a pair of 20-point quarters to run past the Lobos.

The contest was delayed during the fourth quarter due to lightning strikes in the area but resumed play 30 minutes later.

The Wildcats (4-2, 4-2) hit the road Thursday for a matchup against the Brownsville Lopez Lobos (0-7, 0-6). The Lobos (3-4, 2-4) host McAllen High (5-1, 4-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at La Joya ISD Stadium.

DISTRICT 16-5A DII

EDCOUCH-ELSA 63, PSJA MEMORIAL 0: At Elsa, the Yellow Jackets scored 21 points in each of the final three quarter to roll past the Wolverines and keep their postseason hopes alive.

The Yellow Jackets (3-5, 3-3) sit in fifth place in the district standings following the win. They’ll return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Valley View (0-7, 0-5) at Tiger Stadium in Pharr.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines (1-6, 1-4) host Sharyland High at 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

DISTRICT 32-6A

LOS FRESNOS 44, WESLACO HIGH 21: At Los Fresnos, the Falcons scored 21 second-quarter points to take down the Panthers at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.

Weslaco High quarterback Justin Rodriguez answered a Los Fresnos score with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Panthers a 7-6 lead. The Falcons responded with their second quarter surge to shut the door on Weslaco.

Rodriguez added another rushing touchdown late and Mekhi Jones hauled in a touchdown pass for Weslaco’s two other scores.

The loss drops the Panthers to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in District 32-6A, while the Falcons improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in district.

Weslaco will face Brownsville Hanna at 7 p.m. Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco. Next for the Falcons is a road game against Harlingen High at 7 p.m. Friday.

HARLINGEN SOUTH 49, DONNA NORTH 7

At Harlingen, the Hawks scored 42 first-half points en route to a dominating victory over the Chiefs, their sixth straight win of the year.

The Hawks improve to 4-0 in District 32-6A, while the Chiefs fall to 0-4. Next for the Hawks (6-0, 4-0) is a road contest against Brownsville Rivera (2-5, 0-4) at Sams Memorial Stadium, while the Chiefs (1-5, 0-4) host the San Benito Greyhounds (5-2, 2-2) at Bennie La Prade Stadium.

RGVSports.com Top 10 Poll – 10/12/21

A thrilling Week 7 of RGV football brought major changes to the RGVSports.com Top 10 poll, with only one team retaining its position from last week.

Edinburg Vela retained the No. 1 spot, once again earning all six first-place votes following a 51-12 thrashing of PSJA High on Friday. The SaberCats (7-0, 5-0) look to take one step closer to securing the district title Friday, hosting the La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Huskies.

After the SaberCats, mayhem occurred, with new teams at each spot. The Harlingen South Hawks vaulted into the No. 2 spot following a 28-21 victory over last week’s No. 3 team, the San Benito Greyhounds.

The loss by the Greyhounds caused them to drop one spot to No. 4, while the Harlingen High Cardinals climbed to No. 3 after a huge bounce-back win over previously unbeaten Weslaco High on Friday.

All three teams return to action Friday, with the Hawks (6-0, 3-0) playing host to Donna North at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen, while the Cardinals (4-2, 2-1) and Greyhounds (5-1, 2-1) face off in the Battle of the Arroyo at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito.

The Mercedes Tigers tumbled in the rankings from No. 2 to No. 5 after suffering their first loss of the season to the Sharyland High Rattlers. They’re joined by the PSJA North Raiders at No. 5, both receiving 34 points in this week’s votes. The Raiders are coming off a 42-0 drubbing of Edinburg High, their fourth shutout performance of the year.

The Tigers (6-1, 4-1) look to get back on the win column Thursday, taking on the PSJA Southwest Javelinas at PSJA Stadium in Pharr, while the Raiders (5-1, 3-1) prepare for a pivotal matchup against crosstown rival PSJA High (3-3, 2-2).

McAllen Memorial earned its fifth straight win Friday, taking down Brownsville Pace 34-20 to improve to 5-0 in district play. Still, the Mustangs (5-1, 5-0) drop two spots in the rankings, coming in at No. 7. McAllen Memorial takes on Donna High on Friday at Bennie La Prade Stadium in Donna.

Meanwhile, crosstown rival McAllen High jumped two spots to No. 8 after picking up its fourth straight win, improving to 4-1 in district play. The Bulldogs are coming off a 21-14 win over Weslaco East and will look to continue rolling Friday at home against Brownsville Pace.

Rounding out the top 10 is a pair of Mission schools making returns to the ranking. The Mission Veterans Patriots opened the season as the No. 9-ranked team but dropped out of the rankings following a Week 1 loss to the Mission High Eagles.

The Patriots (5-2, 5-0) are back in the poll at No. 9 after reeling off their fifth straight victory, while taking sole possession of first place in District 16-5A DII. They’ll get a week off before hitting the road for a marquee matchup against Mercedes on Friday, Oct. 22, at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes.

Meanwhile, the Eagles return to the poll following back-to-back wins to improve to 4-1 in district play, earning the No. 10 spot. Mission High (5-2, 4-1) takes on the Edinburg Economedes Jaguars on Friday.

Others receiving votes include La Feria (4-1, 1-0), Port Isabel (5-1, 2-1) and Sharyland High (4-2, 3-1).

RGVSPORTS.COM TOP 10

The following are the teams in the RGVSports.com top 10 poll, with first-place votes in parentheses and total points based on 10 points for a first-place vote through 1 point for a 10th-place vote. The six votes are the writers and editors who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers: The Monitor, The Valley Morning Star, and The Brownsville Herald.

PSJA High, PSJA North to collide in The Monitor’s Week 8 Game of the Week

The rivalry between the PSJA High Bears and PSJA North Raiders will take center stage as The Monitor’s Game of the Week for Week 8.

The longtime rivals find themselves and playoff contenders set to collide for bragging rights and positioning in the District 31-6A standings.

PSJA North (5-1, 3-1) is riding a three-game winning streak entering the matchup, while the Bears (3-3, 2-2) will be out to bounce back from a Week 7 loss to district leader Edinburg Vela.

The Raiders will roll out the second-ranked defensive unit in 31-6A, while the Bears’ high-powered offense finds itself at the top of the offensive ranks. It will also be a matchup of contrasting offense with the Raiders ground-and-pound style of play and the Bears’ fast-paced passing attack.

The Raiders prevailed over the Bears 28-0 in last year’s meeting.

Kickoff between the Bears and Raiders is slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

La Villa’s Felix earns Player of the Week honor

La Villa sophomore quarterback Brandon Felix is The Monitor’s Week 7 Player of the Week after helping lead the Cardinals to a 42-14 win over Premont on Friday in District 16-2A DI action.

Felix rushed for 198 yards, threw for 148 yards and total four touchdowns during the win over the defending district champion Cowboys.

Felix showed off his speed on quarterback keepers and read options to slice and dice the Premont defense. His two touchdown throws went to senior receiver Keanu Escobar, who made highlight reel catches downfield in single coverage and gashed the defense on wide receiver screens.

The Cardinals improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in District 16-2A DI play. La Villa is on a bye this week before resuming district competition against Santa Maria on Oct. 22 in Santa Maria.

Round Up: Edinburg Vela shuts down PSJA High to remain unbeaten

The Edinburg Vela SaberCats remained perfect on the year with a 51-13 win over PSJA High on Friday night at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

SaberCats senior quarterback Chase Campbell threw three touchdown passes and sophomore running back Jamal Polley diced up the Bears defense for two rushing touchdowns.

Justin Vega was the recipient of two of Campbell’s touchdown throws, while Carlos Tamez hauled in the other. Ryan Clough also punched in another rushing touchdown for the SaberCats.

Despite the loss, Bears senior receiver Viggo Lopez produced one of the plays of the year. PSJA sophomore quarterback Jaime Lopez tossed a deep ball in Viggo Lopez’s direction with two Vela defenders in the area. Viggo Lopez attacked the ball with his hands, pinned it to the back of his helmet and ran into the end zone to complete the highlight reel play for a 46-yard touchdown. Jaime Lopez scored PSJA’s second touchdown of the night late during the fourth quarter on a short run.

Edinburg Vela improved to 7-0 overall and sit alone at the top of District 31-6A at 5-0. The SaberCats take on La Joya Juarez-Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

Meanwhile, the Bears (3-3, 2-2) will look to bounce back against the rival PSJA North Raiders at 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

LA JOYA 24, EDINBURG NORTH 21: At Edinburg, the Coyotes stunned the Cougars on the road to earn their first district win of the season.

The Coyotes marched down the field to score the game-winning touchdown with 18 seconds left on the scoreboard on a three-yard throw by Tristen Treviño.

La Joya scored 21 points during the second half to overcome a 7-3 halftime deficit.

“It’s a big win for our kids and our community. We’re going to continue to build on this for our season,” La Joya head coach Reuben Farias said. “We faced adversity and our boys kept on working, playing hard and finding ways to make plays and finish drives.

The Coyotes (2-4, 1-3) will be in search of their second consecutive victory when they face Edinburg High (3-4, 3-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at La Joya ISD Stadium.

Edinburg North enters its bye week on a four-game losing streak. The Cougars will resume District 31-6A play Oct. 22 against crosstown rival Edinburg High.

DISTRICT 16-5A DI

McALLEN ROWE 21, DONNA HIGH 17: At McAllen, the Warriors bounced back from a Week 5 loss to McAllen Memorial behind a pair of rushing touchdowns by running back Chris Zavala.

The Warriors improve to 4-1 in district play, placing them in a three-way tie with Brownsville Veterans and McAllen High.

Up next, McAllen Rowe (4-2, 4-1) hits the road for a pivotal district matchup against the Chargers (4-2, 4-1) on Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

McALLEN MEMORIAL 34, BROWNSVILLE PACE 20: At Brownsville, the Mustangs shook off some first half rust, holding the Vikings to six second-half points en route to their fifth straight win.

Next for the Mustangs (5-1, 5-0) is an away game against Donna High (1-4, 1-4) on Friday at Bennie La Prade Stadium in Donna.

DISTRICT 16-5A DI

EDCOUCH-ELSA 42, SHARYLAND PIONEER 21: At Mission, the Yellow Jackets used a 28-point second half to roll past the Diamondbacks, handing them their first district loss of the season.

With that, the Yellow Jackets keep their playoff hopes alive, sitting tied for fifth place with the Roma Gladiators, each holding a 2-3 district record.

Next for Edcouch-Elsa (2-5, 2-3) is a home contest against PSJA Memorial (1-5, 1-3) on Friday at Benny Layton Stadium in Edcouch.

DISTRICT 14-5A DI:

RIO GRANDE CITY 35, LAREDO CIGARROA 10: At Laredo, Rattlers running back Victor Cardenas scored a pair of touchdowns, as Rio Grande City snapped a three-game losing streak, while improving to 1-1 in district play.

The Rattlers’ defense added a pair of touchdowns, while CJ Garcia scored another on the ground.

The Rattlers (3-3, 1-1) return home Friday against San Antonio Southside at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium in Rio Grande City.
