Brownsville Veterans, Donna High meet in RGVSports.com Game of the Week

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers and the Donna High Redskins meet this week in the RGVSports.com Game of the Week for Week 6.

Brownsville Veterans (3-1, 0-0) and Donna High (5-0, 1-0) kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Brownsville Veterans game field.

The Chargers and Redskins are coming off big offensive performances in Week 5. Brownsville Veterans scored 59 points against the PSJA High Bears, and Donna High beat Brownsville Lopez 71-0.

The Chargers are 3-0 since dropping their opening game against San Benito 17-3. Since the loss, Brownsville Veterans has averaged 47.5 points per game and have only given up 16 points per game.

Donna High eclipsed its win total from last season (three) when it beat Edcouch-Elsa 26-8 in Week 4. The Redskins are averaging 50 points per game this season and are only allowing 8.5 points per game.

RGV Football Roundup: Vikings, Raiders highlight big winners during Week 5

Brownsville Pace began District 16-5A DI with a solid win over Donna North on Friday, dominating the Chiefs 48-13 at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Pace quarterback Brandon Narvaez had another impressive performance, and the Vikings had a great day running the ball, Pace head coach Danny Pardo said.

It is always good to start district with a win, he said.

“We are starting to run the ball a little better,” Pardo said. “Keeping it basic, get the kids to not think too much, I think it is working out for us right now.”

“They are playing some good football, so hopefully we can carry that into the next game,” Pardo said.

The Vikings (2-3,1-0) travel to Boggus Stadium to take on Harlingen South at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

BROWNSVILLE RIVERA 32, EDINBURG ECONOMEDES 7: At Edinburg, four different rushers found the end zone for Brownsville Rivera, helping the Raiders snap a two-game skid.

Jesus Hinojosa, Fabian Moreno, Luis Reyes and Edgar Rocha all found scored for the Raiders, with Rocha icing the game with a 63-yard touchdown run with 7:44 left.

The Raiders move to 2-3 as they enter their bye week, while the Jaguars fall to 1-4 on the year. Both teams return to action Thursday, Oct 6, with Brownsville Rivera hosting Los Fresnos in their district opener, while the Jaguars travel to PSJA Stadium for a District 31-6A contest against PSJA High.

LOS FRESNOS 42, MISSION HIGH 13: At Los Fresnos, freshman quarterback Robert Pineda continued his breakout season, rushing for three touchdowns to lead the Falcons to victory Friday.

Pineda scored on runs of 13, 14 and 54 yards to help Los Fresnos wrap up non-district play with a 4-1 mark. The freshman signal-caller has now rushed for seven touchdowns on the year, adding six touchdown passes.

The Falcons (4-1, 0-0) enter a district-wide bye week before kicking of District 32-6A play Thursday, Oct. 6 against Brownsville Rivera (2-3, 0-0) at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

HS Football Roundup: Blowouts common across the Valley

The PSJA North Raiders delivered another beatdown with a 55-0 win over McAllen High in the teams’ District 15-5A DI opener Friday night at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Raiders scored six first half touchdowns to take a commanding 42-0 lead into the locker room.

Junior quarterback Ale Aparicio threw two touchdown passes to tight end Julius Arredondo and one more to Andre Matamoros on a wide receiver screen. Aparicio also added a rushing touchdown to go with 195 passing yards.

Jaden Fuentes, Ethan Guerra, Nathan Ledesma and Jason Montez all contributed with one rushing touchdown apiece.

PSJA North, the No. 2-ranked team in the RGVSports.com Class 5A-6A poll, is slated to face No. 1 Edinburg Vela (4-0, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday at PSJA ISD Stadium in Pharr.

LOS FRESNOS 45, LA JOYA HIGH 0: At Los Fresnos, freshman quarterback Robert Pineda accounted for five touchdowns to lead the Falcons to their second straight win.

Pineda threw two touchdown passes during the first quarter to Josh Limon, adding another on the ground to give the Falcons a 22-0 advantage after one.

He added another touchdown pass to during the second, sending the Falcons into the break with a dominating 38-0 lead.

Pineda capped off his night with a 19-yard rushing touchdown during the third, the Falcons final touchdown of the night.

Los Fresnos (3-1, 0-0) concludes its non-district schedule Friday, taking on Mission High (1-3, 0-0) at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium in Los Fresnos.

SAN BENITO 53, MISSION VETERANS 7: At Mission, the Greyhounds rolled to their fourth straight victory, jumping out to a 27-0 first-half lead over the Patriots and never looking back.

A 10-yard pick-six by senior defensive back Homer Quiroz on the game’s second play set the tone early for the Greyhounds, giving them a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest.

The Greyhounds (4-0) put their undefeated record on the line Friday, taking on Edinburg High (2-2) to close out non-district play before a bye week.

DONNA HIGH 26, EDCOUCH-ELSA 8: Donna High senior Brian Juarez took the opening second half kickoff to the house as the Redskins are now 4-0 on the season.

“We ended the game a little sloppy, but I am proud of our guys,” Redskins head coach Mike Gonzales said. “We are very to happy be 4-0. It is not easy to be 4-0. At the end of the day, we are really proud and we hope are community is proud. The way we ended the game, I was a little embarrassed.”

Gonzales praised his defense for the win against the best team the Redskins have faced this season.
