Each team in last week’s RGVSports.com top 10 poll earned a victory during Week 10 leading to little movement in the latest ranks.

No. 1 Edinburg Vela (10-0, 8-0) received all six first-place votes for the 11th consecutive poll after being crowned District 31-6A champions with a decisive 35-7 win over Mission High last week. The SaberCats are on their bye this week before returning to play for the bi-district round of the playoffs against an opponent to be determined.

No. 2 Harlingen South (9-0, 6-0) fought off a feisty Weslaco High team during Week 10 for a 28-14 win. The Hawks can complete a perfect regular season with a win against Los Fresnos at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Los Fresnos.

No. 3 PSJA North ran through Edinburg Economedes 68-3 to improve to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in District 31-6A. The Raiders have a key Week 11 matchup against playoff qualifier Mission High set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo.

McAllen Memorial held strong at No. 4 with a 38-21 win over Brownsville Porter during Week 10. The Mustangs can win the District 16-5A DI championship outright with a win over Weslaco East at 7 p.m. Thursday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

No. 5 Mercedes (8-1, 7-0) is set to close out the regular season against defending District 16-5A DII champion Sharyland Pioneer at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

McAllen High went from tied for No. 6 to alone at No. 6 with 25 points after a 65-7 win against Brownsville Lopez. The Bulldogs (8-1, 7-1) are set to close out the regular season with a rivalry game against fellow playoff qualifier McAllen Rowe at 7 p.m. Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

San Benito slipped slightly from tied for No. 6 last week to No. 7 this week despite a dominant 50-0 performance against Brownsville Rivera. The Greyhounds (7-2, 4-2) collide with Weslaco High at 7 p.m. Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium with a spot in the playoffs on the line.

Harlingen High remains at No. 8 after rolling to a 51-9 win over Donna North during Week 10. The Cardinals (6-3, 4-2) take on Brownsville Hanna at 7 p.m. Friday at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen.

At No. 9 are the Los Fresnos Falcons (6-2, 5-1), who are set for a regular-season finale showdown against district leader Harlingen South. A Falcons win would create co-district champions out of Harlingen South and Los Fresnos. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Los Fresnos.

La Feria moves back into the top 10 at No. 10 after winning the District 16-4A DI championship last week. The Lions (7-1, 4-0) are on a bye before playing host to a bi-district playoff game in two weeks.

The only other team to receive a vote in the latest top 10 poll was Sharyland High (7-2, 6-1).

Edinburg Vela offensive weapon PJ Rivera is The Monitor’s Week 10 Player of the Week after delivering an all-around performance during a key 35-7 victory against Mission High last Friday.

Rivera displayed his versatility by posting 135 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns against a solid Eagles defense. The victory secured the District 31-6A championship outright for the SaberCats, who also completed an undefeated run through the regular season.

Rivera is up to 357 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, while adding another 420 yards and five touchdowns on 27 receptions. His 13 total touchdowns and 78 points scored this season rank No. 1 in District 31-6A.

Edinburg Vela (10-0, 8-0) is on a bye this week. The SaberCats return to action next week, hosting a bi-district playoff game against a District 32-6A opponent to be determined.

PSJA High sophomore quarterback Jaime Lopez is The Monitor’s Player of the Week after posting video game-like numbers during a pivotal win over La Joya High in Week 9.

Lopez threw for 394 yards and five touchdowns, while also running for another score to lead the Bears to a 63-15 victory against the Coyotes at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

His deep ball was on point from start to finish, as three of his five touchdown passes were hauled in by wide receiver Viggo Lopez, while Christian Gamboa also caught a pair.

Lopez leads all Rio Grande Valley quarterbacks in Class 6A with 1,800 yards and 21 touchdown passes in just seven games. He’s also gained 271 ground yards to go with five touchdown runs.

Last week’s win keeps the Bears (4-4, 3-3) firmly in the playoff picture as they continue to battle for District 31-6A’s No. 4 seed with Edinburg High (4-5, 4-3) and Edinburg North (3-5, 2-4).

Next for PSJA High is a must-win District 31-6A game over playoff hopeful Edinburg North at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

The Monitor’s Week 10 Game of the Week features a battle for the District 31-6A championship between Edinburg Vela (9-0, 7-0) and Mission High (6-2, 5-1).

Edinburg Vela has run through all opposition this season and have owned the No. 1 ranking in the RGVSports.com top 10 poll for 11 consecutive weeks, receiving all six first-place votes in each poll.

A win for Edinburg Vela would cap off a perfect run through the regular season at 10-0 and secure the program’s third consecutive district championship and sixth in seven years.

Meanwhile, the Eagles enter Week 10 on a three-game winning streak and sit tied at No. 2 in the District 31-6A standings with PSJA North

A Mission victory over Edinburg Vela would create a three-way tie for the district title entering the final week of the regular season.

The SaberCats and Eagles met last year with the District 31-6A title on the line during the final week of the regular season, and Edinburg Vela walked away with a 24-7 victory.

Kickoff between the Eagles and SaberCats is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

The McAllen High Bulldogs reeled off their sixth straight win, cruising past the La Joya Palmview Lobos 42-21 on Friday at La Joya ISD Stadium.

The win moves the Bulldogs to 6-1 in district play, sitting alone in second place in District 16-5A DI with two games remaining.

“The kids played extremely hard tonight,” McAllen High head coach Patrick Shelby said. “We’re happy with where we are right now.

“They’ve been getting prepared every single week. They show up and work extremely hard during the week of practice. They’re focused. They have a goal in mind that they want to achieve and they focus on that goal.”

The Bulldogs were led by running back Weston Guzman, who scored a pair of touchdowns, and quarterback Hunter Curl, who piloted the offense to several touchdown drives.

Defensively, the Bulldogs tightened down after the opening drive, limited the Lobos to 14 points in the final three quarters.

Next the for the Bulldogs (7-1, 6-1) is a home contest against Brownsville Lopez (0-8, 0-7) on Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

McALLEN ROWE 49, BROWNSVILLE PORTER 7: At McAllen, the Warriors jumped out to a 28-0 first half lead and didn’t look back, cruising to their fifth district win of the season.

The Warriors kept their postseason hopes alive, sitting tied for fourth with the Weslaco East Wildcats, each with a 5-2 mark.

The Warriors (5-3, 5-2) hit the road next Friday for a pivotal district clash with the Wildcats (5-2, 5-2) at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

DISTRICT 16-4A DI

GRULLA 33, ZAPATA 27: At Rio Grande City, the Gators clinched a playoff spot with an overtime win against the Hawks on Friday at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium.

Grulla (3-3, 2-1) fought back from an early first quarter deficit to take a 20-14 lead into the break.

During the second half, the Gators nearly sealed the deal before Zapata rallied to force the game into overtime.

Grulla scored a touchdown during the extra period to win the game.

The Gators move on to their bye week before resuming District 16-4A DI play on Nov. 5 against Kingsville King.

DISTRICT 16-2A DI

LA VILLA 46, SANTA MARIA 0: At La Villa, the Cardinals remained unbeaten in District 16-2A DI with a shellacking of Santa Maria.

The Cardinals improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in district play. Next for the Cardinals is a matchup against Riviera-Kaufer at 7:30 p.m. Friday in La Villa.

Four Rio Grande Valley boys basketball programs — Brownsville Pace, North Mission IDEA, San Perlita and Santa Rosa — rank among the best teams in the state, according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches top 25 preseason poll.

Brownsville Pace, the defending District 32-5A champion, is ranked No. 24 at the Class 5A level. The Vikings return a solid senior group led by Alex Agado, Christian Guajardo and Benny Villarreal with hopes of advancing further than last year’s second round playoff exit.

The RGV landed two teams in the Class 3A top 25 led by No. 22 Santa Rosa and No. 23 North Mission IDEA.

Santa Rosa made a run to the regional final last season before falling to San Antonio Cole. The Warriors graduated a strong class, but return seven lettermen from a season ago. Santa Rosa begins the year as a favorite to successfully defend its District 32-3A championship.

The North Mission IDEA Warriors finished last season 22-3 overall and 18-0 in District 31-3A to win the district title. The Warriors return all five returning starters from a season ago led by twins Manuel and Raul Bejarano.

Meanwhile, San Perlita landed at No. 17 in the Class 1A top 25. The Trojans won the District 32-1A title and reached the regional semifinals during their playoff run.

Edcouch-Elsa running back Joshua Gomez set a new school record Friday, earning The Monitor’s Week 8 Player of the Week honor.

The senior bell cow toted the rock 16 times for a school-record 316 yards and two touchdowns, while adding one reception for two yards and another score, helping his team earn a 63-0 victory over PSJA Memorial. Gomez’s performance breaks Fred Loredo’s single-game school rushing record of 315 yards set during the 2004 season.

Friday marked the second 300-yard game in a row by Gomez, becoming the first running back to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in the RGV this season. Gomez has rushed for 1,217 yards and nine touchdowns on 112 carries, averaging 10.9 yards per attempt.
