PSJA North’s Lugo named The Monitor’s Player of the Week

PSJA North senior offensive weapon Jack Lugo is The Monitor’s Player of the Week for the bi-district round of the playoffs after posting video game-like numbers during a 56-26 win over Harlingen South last week.

Lugo handled 17 touches and turned them into 292 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns for an average of 17.2 yards per carry. The PSJA North senior is up to 894 rushing yards, 211 receiving yards and 17 total touchdowns in 11 games played this season.

The standout performance during the first-round victory punched PSJA North’s ticket back to the second round of the postseason for the second consecutive season and for the third time in four years.

The Raiders are set to face Eagle Pass (8-3, 5-1) in the Region IV-6A DII area round at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Shirley Field in Laredo.

Upper-Valley Football Roundup

HARLINGEN — The PSJA North Raiders defeated the Harlingen South Hawks 56-26, winning the bi-district matchup and advancing to the area round of the playoffs.

The Hawks entered the playoffs undefeated and as District 32-6A champions, their best season since 2007. Hosting a playoff game at Boggus Stadium was a reward for their success.

The 8-2 PSJA North Raiders, boasting one of the best defenses in the Rio Grande Valley and a solid running game, came to play.

The Raiders started quick and struck often during the first half with four big touchdowns by senior running back Jack Lugo. A 32-yard touchdown run only a couple minutes into the game was answered with a 2-yard running touchdown by South’s Carlos Mossboss.

Isaac Gonzalez scored the next touchdown for the Raiders, smoking South for a 46-yard touchdown run. South tied it at 14 when quarterback Xander Casarez hit Elias Ledesma on a slant for a 10-yard touchdown.

The Raiders’ defense came up with a big interception as Leroy Palacios jumped the route, and then Lugo tallied another big touchdown run, this one from 42 yards out. The Raiders got slick on the kickoff and recovered the onside kick.

PSJA North quarterback Alejandro Aparacio ran hard all night. Good runs from him and Gonzalez set up two more Lugo touchdown runs before halftime, one from 10 yards out and the other for 28 yards, giving the Raiders a 35-14 lead at halftime.

“It was great to come into a bi-district game and get the win, perform and do what my team needed to do,” Lugo said. “A running back is nothing without his offensive line, and they came to play. They are dogs.”

South quickly cut into the Raiders’ lead. Casarez found a wide open Ernesto Garcia for a 57-yard touchdown, reducing the lead to 15. South could not capitalize on a fumble recovery on the next drive.

Lugo was fantastic all night, and so was his blocking. Lugo put the game out of reach with two more long touchdown runs, the first from 30 yards out and the second from 45 yards to give PSJA North a 49-20 lead during the fourth quarter.

The game finished 56-26 thanks to a couple of late touchdowns.

“They played hard,” PSJA North coach Marcus Kaufmann said. “It was all-around an intense game. Even though we were up, we never felt like we had it solidified because they are such a good team. We ended up making the plays when we needed to.

“And then Jack (Lugo), Jack broke some tackles, he had some big plays and some big holes. It was a lot of fun.”

It was a disappointing end to the season for South, but a lot was accomplished.

“We are extremely proud of our boys,” South coach Israel Gonzalez said. “We give all praise, glory and honor to God in the good times and bad ones. He blessed us with a tremendous season. We are grateful and joyful for what we got to accomplish. This team will be special to my heart no matter how much time goes by.”

CLASS 2A DIVISION I

LA VILLA 34, FREER 7: At Roma, the Cardinals (9-2, 4-0) earned a bi-district playoff victory over Freer to advance to the area round.

Freer kept the game close throughout the first half, but a second half explosion by La Villa ended all hopes of a first-round upset. The Cardinals will face Ganado (6-5, 3-1) during the second round. Game details are to be determined.

CLASS 5A-DIVISION II

MISSION VETERANS 17, MEDINA VALLEY 14: At Donna, the Patriots emerged triumphant in their return to the postseason, holding off the Panthers’ fourth-quarter comeback attempt to advance to the Class 5A-DII area round.

The Patriots (8-3, 7-1) take on the Marble Falls Mustangs (8-3, 4-2) at a time, date and location to be determined.

Sharyland High’s Cepeda to run at UT Permian Basin

Sharyland High senior distance runner Kayla Cepeda signed her national letter of intent Wednesday, committing to continue her academic and athletic career at the UT Permian Basin, an NCAA Division II university that competes in the Lone Star Conference.

Cepeda, a four-year letter winner for the Rattlers’ cross-country team, will compete for the Falcons in both cross-country and track.

Cepeda finished her career with the Rattlers as a two-time regional qualifier, setting a personal best time of 20 minutes, 26.5 seconds as a freshman during the McNeil Invitational on Sept. 29. 2018 at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock, TX.

Cepeda was a part of the Rattlers’ 2021 state-qualifying cross-country team, finishing with a time of 23:13.8 at the UIL’s Class 5A state cross-country meet.

RGVSports Top 10 Football Poll – 11/9/21

Mission High and Mission Veterans each entered their regular season finale on the outside looking in at last week’s RGVSports.com top 10 poll, but after key Week 11 victories, both the Eagles and Patriots have broken into the latest ranks.

The No. 9 Patriots (7-3, 7-1) won a share of the District 16-5A DII championship by cruising past PSJA Memorial 49-7 last week. Mission Veterans will take on Medina Valley (3-7, 2-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bennie La Prade Stadium in Donna.

The No. 10 Eagles (7-3, 6-2) topped No. 6 PSJA North 27-21 in a key District 31-6A showdown last week, and are now set to collide against the Los Fresnos Falcons (6-3, 5-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Bill Pate Memorial Stadium in Hidalgo.

Edinburg Vela (10-0, 8-0) began the year as the unanimous No. 1 team and finished in the same position at the end of the regular season. The District 31-6A champion SaberCats were on a bye last week and preparing for a Region IV-6A Division II bi-district matchup against No. 7 San Benito (8-2, 5-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

Treviño racked up 275 all-purpose yards during the Tigers’ victory, hauling in eight receptions for 200 yards and four touchdowns, while adding a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Treviño’s performance helped secure a share of the District 16-5A DII crown for the Tigers, finishing with a 7-1 record in district play.

The do-it-all junior athlete has tallied 1,192 all-purpose yards this season, including a district-leading 833 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on 49 receptions. Treviño’s 84 points scored on 14 touchdowns rank No. 1 in the district at the end of the regular season.

Up next for Treviño and the Tigers (9-1, 7-1) is their Region IV-5A DII bi-district round matchup against the Boerne-Champion Chargers (8-2, 4-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium.
