California Baseball Academy select team to launch in RGV

The Rio Grande Valley has produced a handful of high-level baseball players throughout the years. Now, California Baseball Academy USA (CBA), a premier select baseball organization affiliated with Perfect Game, is starting up in the RGV to make the process easier for local high school baseball players to be seen by scouts, develop as athletes, and help them reach their collegiate and professional goals on the baseball diamond.

“We are dedicated to not only the baseball development of our players, but also the personal development and growth of all of the young men in our program. To CBA, baseball is the tool to help develop the characteristics and independence necessary to not only be successful on the field, but more importantly in life. Through our positive learning environment, respect for the game, and our ability to put our players against the best competition in amateur baseball, we can provide an unrivaled club baseball experience for all of our players,” the CBA mission statement reads.

Sharyland High assistant baseball coach Austin Bickerton is leading the charge for CBA Rio Grande Valley and is looking to gather a list of potential players for a club team exclusively from the RGV.

“We believe the Valley has the talent to compete as a collective around the state. Our organization will be based exclusively from the RGV. Athletes will be coached by RGV high school coaches who have played at the next level. Practices will focus on development and be highly active and structured,” CBA RGV wrote in a statement.

CBA membership includes weekly practices, tournaments and scrimmages, scientifically backed strength and sports performance training, and sports psychology sessions twice a week.

“Emphasis on the mental side of sport is a key component often overlooked in the player development process. We have made it a priority to ensure all CBA players have access to the tools to ensure they build mental toughness and a complete enjoyment for the game they play,” the CBA states.

Much of today’s recruiting process comes down to getting in front of college coaches and scouts. CBA is designed to help its players do that by providing the opportunity to participate in events where college coaches are present and attend college camps.

CBA also holds its own College Showcase Camps where college coaches actively recruit and teach CBA players on the field. The camps are designed to help players gain exposure and showcase their abilities in front of some of the top collegiate programs in the country.

Membership dues are $125 a month and includes sponsorships with baseball equipment companies Marucci and Victus, discounts with Perfect Game, access to CBA College Showcase Camps, and a FieldLevel recruiting profile which has helped CBA land a number of players at all collegiate levels from Division I to Junior College.

Sources: La Joya ISD will not compete in fall sports

According to multiple sources close to the matter, La Joya Independent School District’s three high schools will not compete in fall sports this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its prevalence in the Rio Grande Valley.

This means La Joya High and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, two UIL Class 6A schools, and La Joya Palmview, Class 5A, will not play football, volleyball or cross country this fall. The move is expected to be announced this upcoming week when the three La Joya high schools make the official notification to their respective District Executive Committees.

On Thursday, La Joya ISD’s School Board of Trustees announced it collectively approved a recommendation to delay in-person instruction until Nov. 2, citing significant numbers of positive COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County. La Joya ISD, like other school districts in the RGV, have remained aligned with no athletics until in-person instruction is allowed.

“The health, safety, and well-being of our employees, students, and community remains the highest priority for La Joya ISD. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of this precautionary step we have taken to safeguard the safety and health of our community,” La Joya ISD Superintendent Gisela Saenz said in a statement Thursday.

With Nov. 2 being the earliest date La Joya ISD athletics are allowed to return, that would leave the football teams with just one week to play before the district certification deadline set by the UIL. Meanwhile, district certification deadlines will have already passed for La Joya ISD cross country and volleyball teams.

La Joya High, Juarez-Lincoln and Palmview would join Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco as second, third and fourth UIL Texas high schools to not play football this fall. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Matt Stepp was the first to report the news Saturday morning.

The move from La Joya ISD impacts two football districts — District 31-6A and District 16-5A DI.

Without La Joya High and Juarez-Lincoln, District 31-6A will shift to a seven-team district with the remaining members being Edinburg Economedes, Edinburg High, Edinburg North, Edinburg Vela, Mission High, PSJA High and PSJA North.

Without La Joya Palmview, the 10-team District 16-5A DI moves to a nine-team district featuring Brownsville Lopez, Brownsville Pace, Brownsville Porter, Brownsville Veterans, Donna High, McAllen High, McAllen Memorial, McAllen Rowe and Weslaco East.

As of Friday, Aug. 21, there have been 1,071 deaths due to complications related to COVID-19 and 23,993 confirmed cases in Hidalgo County, according to the latest news release issued by the county. There are also 414 currently hospitalized in Hidalgo County with coronavirus. In Cameron County, there have been 495 deaths and a total number of 19,001 reported cases. Meanwhile, Starr County has reported 100 deaths as of Friday.

Hometown hero Bobby Morrow dies at 84

Staff Report

SAN BENITO — Three-time Olympic gold medalist Bobby J. Morrow, who was honored by his hometown when the San Benito school district named its football stadium after him, died Saturday at the age of 84.

The San Benito school district expressed its condolences on its Facebook page Saturday.

“The San Benito CISD Board of Trustees, Superintendent Dr. Nate Carman, and the district’s sports and educational community were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bobby Joe Morrow,” the Facebook post says.

“On behalf of our entire San Benito CISD family, I extend our most sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the Morrow family. They will be in our thoughts and prayers,” Carman said in the post.

“Mr. Morrow’s legacy will live on forever in San Benito as he is the namesake of two of our sports facilities.”

Morrow won three gold medals at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. He won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter sprint and anchored the gold medal winning 4×100-meter relay team.

Later in life, Morrow achieved fame with appearances on the cover of Life and SPORT magazine.

He was born in Harlingen on Oct. 15, 1935, and raised in San Benito. Before becoming a sprinter, Morrow played for the San Benito High School football team.

He graduated from San Benito High School in 1954 and went on to attend Abilene Christian University, where he was a sprinter.

In 1989, he was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

In 2006, San Benito High School named its football stadium Bobby Morrow Stadium in his honor.
