In the latest episode of the RGVSports.com Podcast, The Monitor’s Andrew McCulloch and Bryan Ramos preview this weekend’s Rio Grande Valley football action, including The Monitor’s Game of the Week – Edinburg Vela vs. Mission Veterans (00:53), McAllen Memorial vs. Sharyland Pioneer (4:27) and more with the return of 5A and 6A action across the RGV (7:10). Edinburg Vela, Mission Vets clash in The Monitor’s Game of the Week

MISSION — The Edinburg Vela SaberCats and Mission Veterans Patriots will clash in The Monitor’s Game of the Week, as teams across the Rio Grande Valley celebrate their return to the gridiron in what will be the season opener for both squads.

The Patriots and SaberCats will headline a full weekend slate of RGV football for the first in 2020. It will be the only non-district contest for Vela this season.

Edinburg Vela and Mission Vets have been two of the Valley’s most successful programs at the Class 6A and 5A levels, respectively, ranking as the area’s two winningest high school football programs during the last decade. Together, the Patriots and SaberCats have combined for a 148-68 record over the past 10 seasons.

In what should be an early favorite for the RGV’s high school football game of the year, Vela and Mission Vets will both be looking to build off adversity-filled seasons last year.

The SaberCats had their first imperfect regular season in years during the 2019 campaign but still battled into the third round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Patriots, meanwhile, had to overcome a mountain of injuries before bowing out of the postseason in the bi-district round in the Class 5A DI playoffs.

Quarterback Ricky Reyna makes his return for Mission Veterans after suffering a broken leg last season and so is senior wideout AJ Gonzaque, one of the Valley’s top receivers who returns to the fold after plans to transfer to San Antonio Cornerstone fell through during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the other side of the ball, senior quarterback AJ Sotelo and left tackle Ronnie Garza, the RGV’s top offensive line prospect and a UTSA Roadrunners commit, will lead a loaded Vela offense looking to stake its claim as the RGV’s top-scoring unit.

Both teams will be looking to become the first Valley high school football squad to punch its way into the fourth round of the state playoffs since Mission Veterans did it last in 2018.

The Patriots and SaberCats will kick things off at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tom Landry’s Hall of Fame Memorial Stadium in Mission.

Vela rebounds to beat PSJA High in five sets

STAFF REPORT

Early season matchups in high school volleyball are meant to prepare teams for the rigors of district play.

Due to the Valley being a hotspot for the COVID-19 pandemic, there wasn’t a preseason for any area teams. Teams may have squeaked in two games before their district schedule began, some went headfirst into district.

For Edinburg Vela, the District 31-6A season opener against PSJA High was a battle of two teams expected to fight for the district title. Vela shook off a little rust and rebounded from a first-set loss as the Sabercats claimed an 11-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21, 15-10 win over the Bears on Tuesday at PSJA High.

“We went in there hoping we were ready after trying to put it together for a week,” Vela head coach Araceli Ortega said. “As the match went on, you could see our girls were starting to figure it out. They (PSJA) had just beaten Mission Veterans over the weekend. We knew that and knew it would be tough. I was proud to see how they responded.

Vela lost the first set 25-11 and trailed early in the second set before the two teams tied at 10 and then four more times before Vela went on an 8-3 run for a 22-17 advantage. Samantha Villalobos recorded two aces during that span and Vela went on to tie the match at one set apiece.

After the two teams traded off wins in the next two sets, Vela jumped out to 8-4 lead and extended it to 10-5 behind the of Fey Vasquez. A sophomore, Vasquez was used mainly as a blocker last year but with the graduation of standout Glenys Maldonado, she has been asked, like the rest of the team, to step up this year. Vasquez responded with three kills in the final six Vela points to secure a playoff-like win for the Sabercats.

“She came up big for us,” Ortega said. “She was nervous before the game but then started showing confidence. She was just willing to get whatever she could with any ball she got and do something with it.”

Vasquez led the Sabercats with a game high 14 kills along with seven blocks. Villalobos added 10 kills to go with five blocks, seven digs and 11 service points. Maria Sanchez chipped in 35 digs and 14 points.

Kaylah Hernandez had 10 kills to lead the Bears offensively while Talia Gomez had eight kills. Jenna Guajardo and Jumairy contributed six kills apiece.

Mercedes hosts PSJA North in Monitor’s Game of the Week

MERCEDES — The PSJA North Raiders and Mercedes Tigers will meet Friday in The Monitor’s Game of the Week as Class 5A and 6A high school football teams begin to make their returns to the gridiron in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Tigers and Raiders will be one of a handful of Valley matchups featuring a pair of 5A and 6A teams participating in their season openers after Grulla, Hidalgo and La Feria kicked off the 2020 football season in the Valley last week. For Mercedes and PSJA North, it will also mark the Raiders’ only non-district games of the 2020 regular season.

In what promises to be a monumental matchup featuring two of the RGV’s most prolific offense and bruising defenses. It will mark the first time the Raiders and Tigers have clashed on the football since 2005.

The Tigers are coming off a 7-4 regular season that ended with a 21-17 bi-district playoff loss to the Alice Coyotes, but return a large number of starters and playmakers.

Offensively, Mercedes will be led by dynamic junior dual-threat quarterback Michael Cisneros (1,905 passing yards, 11 TDs) and athletic senior wideout Josiah Cantu (796 receiving yards, five TDs), while the defense will be captained by senior all-state linebacker Brandon Adame (177 tackles, 20.0 TFL, four sacks, three forced fumbles), one of the Valley’s most elite defenders.

Adame will meet his match on the opposite sideline, as the Raiders are also led by one of the hardest hitters across South Texas in senior outside linebacker Micah Lopez (143 tackles, seven TFL), who will take the reins this season as the leader of North’s Blackshirt Defense.

PSJA North, which is coming off a 5-5 season in which the team narrowly missed out on a return trip to the playoffs, will be looking to kick off 2020 with a big road win. Offensively, the Raiders should lean on All-Valley junior running back Isaac Gonzalez (1,418 rushing yards, 14 TDs, eight 100-yard rushing games) as the team decides on its newest starting quarterback this week.

Kick-off between the Raiders and Tigers is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes.
