Weslaco’s Hernandez named The Monitor’s Player of the Week

WESLACO — Weslaco High senior Jesse Hernandez has been named The Monitor’s high school football player of the week in the Rio Grande Valley for the week of Nov. 3-9 in his first start as the team’s featured back.

The Panthers’ senior running back played a major role in helping his team secure a dominant 28-14 season-opening win against the Harlingen South Hawks on Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

Hernandez tallied 202 total yards of offense and scored three total touchdowns as one of the leaders of the Panthers’ prolific offense, which scored on each of its first three possessions against the Hawks.

The Weslaco High senior back scored his team’s first points of the season on a 5-yard touchdown run on the first offensive drive of the game and added another score at the start of the second quarter on a 30-yard screen pass from senior quarterback Rodney Garza.

Hernandez capped off his sensational night on the ground with an 88-yard sprint to the end zone after slicing through the interior of the Hawks’ defense at the start of the third quarter.

His relentless rushing attack helped the Panthers secure a much-needed win in District 32-6A’s west zone against Harlingen South.

The victory sets up a monster matchup with Hernandez and Weslaco High against the Harlingen High Cardinals, who currently sit atop 32-6A’s west zone standings.

The Cardinals and Panthers will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Weslaco for The Monitor’s Game of the Week with a spot in the District 32-6A championship game on the line for both teams.

Harlingen, Weslaco to clash in The Monitor’s Game of the Week

The Harlingen High Cardinals and Weslaco High Panthers will meet in The Monitor’s Game of the Week in a colossal clash in District 32-6A and one of the early leading candidates for the Rio Grande Valley’s Class 6A game of the year.

Harlingen (3-0, 2-0) and Weslaco (1-0, 1-0) will duel for first place in 32-6A’s west zone standings and potentially a spot in the district championship game in a matchup that should carry significant regular-season and postseason implications.

The Panthers won their District 32-6A opener over Harlingen South last Friday in decisive fashion, as senior quarterback Rodney Garza and senior running back Jesse Hernandez combined for four touchdowns in the team’s season opener.

Weslaco High’s defense, which returns nine starters from last season’s team, also shut out the Hawks during the first half.

The Cardinals have rolled to three straight wins to open the 2020 season, highlighted by a shutout victory over crosstown rival Harlingen South in the Bird Bowl. Harlingen High has outscored its opponents 110-12 through three games so far this year.

A victory would put the Panthers one win away from clinching the District 32-6A west zone title and a spot in the district championship game in early December, while a win for the Cardinals would clinch a title game appearance outright.

Harlingen High and Weslaco High will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

Others receiving votes: Hidalgo 6, Mission Veterans 6, McAllen Memorial 3, Raymondville 3, Lyford 2.

The top five teams in the RGVsports.com Top 10 Poll remained in the top five with just a little shuffle.

Edinburg Vela stands alone in the top spot this week, garnering four of the six first-place votes and 57 points. Last week Sharyland Pioneer had shared the top spot with the SaberCats, but the Diamondbacks appear at No. 2 in this week’s poll.

Harlingen High, Mission High and Mercedes filled out the next three spots, respectively.

Weslaco High and San Benito each climbed into this week’s poll after both came off impressive wins last week. The Panthers made their season debut and walked away with a 28-14 win over Harlingen South. Weslaco High senior running back Jesse Hernandez rushed for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns while adding another receiving touchdown in the win.

San Benito (1-1) dropped out of last week’s poll after losing to currently-ranked No. 7 Brownsville Hanna 20-13 in both teams’ season-opener. The Greyhounds, however, came storming back with a 60-8 win against Los Fresnos this past weekend.

Weslaco East made the biggest climb in the poll, from No. 8 to No. 6, after a 44-34 win over Brownville Pace in its season-opener. All aspects of the Wildcats game played a role, as the defense scored a touchdown, special teams returned a blocked PAT for two points and Avery Bowen, the team’s quarterback, threw for a touchdown and rushed for one as well.

Mercedes improved to 4-0 on the year. The Tigers won their seventh straight game against rival Edcouch-Elsa on the road, 34-21.

Mission Veterans rolls in win over Roma

MISSION — After a two-week absence due to COVID-19 concerns, Mission Veterans made a successful return to the football field as the Patriots rolled to a 50-23 victory over Roma Saturday at Tom Landry Stadium.

The District 16-5A Division I win is the Patriots’ first of the year, while Roma drops to 0-2 overall.

Mission Veterans quarterback Ricky Reyna showed little rust as the junior gunslinger threw three first-half touchdowns and ran for another score during the opening 24 minutes.

Justin Rodriguez was on the receiving end of three touchdown passes from Reyna as he consistently battled for contested catches, and showed off a bit of burst while doing so. Rodriguez finished with five receptions for 123 yards. Receivers AJ Gonzaque and Jaythan Barrera each made nifty catches early for the Patriots.

Gonzaque finished with one touchdown grab, while Barrera had five catches and a couple big plays in the kick and punt return game.

With the score in hand, Mission Veterans took its foot off the gas a bit during the second half. That didn’t stop the Patriots offense from putting up points, however.

Mission Veterans running backs Erick Estrada and Noah Garcia each added second-half rushing touchdowns to pad the Patriots’ lead. On Estrada’s score, the senior received a handoff early during the fourth quarter, sprinted toward the left sideline and turned upfield. After 60 yards, Estrada celebrated in the end zone after out-running multiple defenders for a touchdown that resembled a circus high wire act.

Roma rallied late with three fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns — two from Sebastian Garza and one from Eliberto Muñoz. Garza came on strong late as he found room right up the middle of the Patriots defense for a 55-yard touchdown, and added another one from 29-yards out on the Gladiators’ next possession.

Roma (0-2, 0-2) has an open week coming up as the Gladiators were previously scheduled to play Valley View, which has not begun its football season.

Meanwhile, Mission Veterans (1-1, 1-0) will prepare for “The Battle of Conway” as the Patriots are scheduled to face the Mission High Eagles (2-0, 2-0) in a non-district rivalry game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tom Landry Hall of Fame Stadium.
