La Feria’s Rivera earns RGVSports.com POTW

La Feria quarterback Andruw Rivera accounted for 541 total yards and eight total touchdowns, leading the Lions to a 53-47 victory over the Mercedes Tigers on Friday. Rivera’s performance earns him the RGVSports.com Week 4 Player of the Week award.

The sophomore signal caller led an aerial assault during the Lions’ third straight victory, completing 22-of-27 passes for 437 yards and seven touchdowns. He made his presence felt on the ground as well, carrying the ball 22 times for 104 yards and one touchdown.

Rivera connected with four different receivers for touchdowns, with two wideouts eclipsing the 100-yard receiving mark.

He opened the scoring for the Lions, punching it in from the one during the first. Rivera capped the game with a 6-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass to senior wideout Julian Torres with less than four minutes left.

The Lions (3-1, 0-0) turn their attention to district play Friday, taking on the Alice Coyotes (3-1, 0-0) at Lion Stadium in La Feria.

Collision Course: Raiders, SaberCats meet in RGVSports.com Game of the Week

Unstoppable force, meet immovable object.

The No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams in the RGVSports.com Class 5A-6A poll, Edinburg Vela (4-0, 1-0) and PSJA North (4-0, 1-0) are slated to collide in the RGVSports.com Game of the Week for Week 5.

Kickoff between the Raiders and SaberCats is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

Both Edinburg Vela and PSJA North are unbeaten this season and have been dominating opponents through four weeks. The SaberCats have outscored opposition 222-34, including a 63-0 victory over McAllen Memorial during Week 4. Meanwhile, the Raiders are outscoring teams 171-41 and are fresh off a 55-0 win against McAllen High last week.

PSJA North brings in District 15-5A DI’s top offense and second-ranked defense in total yardage, while Edinburg Vela has the district’s No. 1-ranked defense and second-ranked offense. The two teams met a season ago in District 31-6A with the SaberCats winning 24-0. The final score was the closest a Rio Grande Valley team played Edinburg Vela during the 2021 regular season.

It’s also the first year back down at the Class 5A level for both programs after the latest UIL realignment in May. The Raiders and SaberCats qualified for the regional semifinal round of the playoffs last season at the Class 6A level. Now, they’re set to battle for bragging rights, a district title and playoff positioning once it’s all said and done.
