PSJA Memorial wins Donna Dreamcatcher tournament

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

DONNA — PSJA Memorial’s aggressive defense held Sharyland High scoreless for the final moments of the game to win the Donna Dreamcatcher tournament championship game 49-45 on Saturday.

“It’s a big confidence booster,” PSJA Memorial coach Marisa Gutierrez said. “We needed this. We played tough games at the Weslaco tournament and tough games at the Border Brawl. So, we needed to come out here and finish strong to go into next week and then the following week, because we open up with PSJA North, and that is going to be a tough game.”

Sharyland High (14-7) sophomore guard Aydee Hinojosa fouled out late in the fourth quarter, which allowed Memorial (12-8) to hone in on senior Anna Marshall. The Wolverines denied passes to the post and forced turnovers to maintain their lead.

“It’s always hard to go against bigs, especially against Anna Marshall,” Gutierrez said. “She’s a tremendous player. She moves well and the height — we can’t grow anymore, that’s as big as we are going to get. But, we just have to play as big as we can. So, defensively, we try to speed up our game and use our speed for our defense.”

Marshall was named tournament co-MVP along with PSJA Memorial senior guard Alex Soto.

Soto scored early and often. She came out of the gates with two 3-pointers in the first quarter. Soto finished the first half with eight points and scored 20 in the game.

Three minutes into the third quarter Sharyland, was on a 12-0 run that gave the team a 32-25 lead, but Soto found her spot and dropped a three. That swung the momentum and sparked a 10-3 run for Memorial.

Plays like that earned the Soto the co-MVP, something she was very proud of.

“It’s my senior year,” Soto said. “So, basically, it is crunch time. I have to give it all I got to bring W’s to the team.”

Soto has been a sparkplug on offense for Memorial all season.

“She’s a crucial part of our offense,” Gutierrez said. “She is our moneymaker. She pulls through in tough situations. She’s got that quick trigger. She has improved a lot.”

Also a catalyst was Monique Deleon. The junior guard had 10 points and was crucial to limiting Sharyland’s Hinojosa on defense.

“We knew that they had a big post,” Deleon said. “So, we knew that our guards had to be quick on our feet. We have to prevent the ball from getting into the post by stopping the guards.”

Hinojosa finished the game with 11 points and a nasty gash on her chin.

“I can’t say enough about her,” Sharyland coach Dale Whitaker said. “She’s just a sophomore. She leads our team. She’s one of our captains. The way she was going in there and getting knocked around, and then she got a cut on her chin, she’s going to need stitches. How can you not love a kid like that?”

Marshall finished with 22 points.

There were 13 lead changes in the game. The close game gave Whitaker confidence in his team, despite the loss.

“What I told them was, they gave me a taste of what they are capable of,” Whitaker said. “I told them ‘I want to see that for the rest of the year,’ because, if they can give me that effort, then we will be fine. This game is exactly what we needed.”

Brownsville St. Joseph won the third-place game over host Donna High, 40-34.

Sharyland Pioneer beat Corpus Christi St. John Paul II, 36-35 for the consolation bracket championship.

Marburger following in family tradition

BY SAUL BERRIOS THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — McAllen Memorial senior volleyball player Taylor Marburger defines herself by three things: hard work, family and faith.

That was exemplified on Friday when Marburger signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at Baylor.

Marburger didn’t seek out a ton of options for college because she knew where she wanted to end up.

“I knew that my dream was always Baylor,” Marburger said. “I was going to do anything I could to go there.”

The Division I program is so competitive that players under 5-foot-7 have often been ignored. Marburger, at 5-foot-6, was not willing to accept that, though.

She was invited to a camp at Baylor during the summer to workout for their coaches.

After the camp she called her father, Kyle Marburger, crying. Kyle, thinking Taylor had been rejected, tried to console his daughter. Then she choked out through tears “I got in.” That is when all the accomplishments and sacrifices paid off for Taylor.

“I put it all on the line by talking to the head coach (Ryan McGuyre) and telling him I wanted to be a part of his team,” Taylor Marburger said. “He allowed me to be a part of his team, after watching me during the camp. It was definitely a door opened by god. That’s all I can say.”

For Taylor Marburger, the talk with McGuyre was about proving she brought more than physical skills.

“He was asking me why I wanted to go to Baylor and getting to know me more,” Taylor Marburger said. “I told him that my whole family is Baylor alumni, so it was definitely a dream. I just want to represent Christ in everything I do. I know at that school that is really big there. That is how the conversation went and then he basically said, ‘Alright, you can join our team. I’d love for you to be a part of our team next year.’ At that point I was just overwhelmed.”

Memorial volleyball coach Lorena Lopez has seen her grow, which has helped the team reach new heights.

“We got to the regional tournament last year and this year, and Taylor is a big reason why,” Lopez said after a game last month. “She is going to continue her volleyball career over at Baylor, and I told her, ‘Hold your head up high and get used to being the smallest person on the court.’”

Taylor Marburger has spent the past season trying to prepare for the next level. She has spent countless hours in the gym, adding muscle, playing different roles on the team and learning from her coaches and teammates.

As for being the smallest player on the court, as her coach joked, Taylor Marburger embraces the challenge.

“I’m super excited about that, because it makes me different,” Marburger said. “It makes me have to prove myself. To work just a little bit harder. And I am excited to influence the people around me by having that heart.”

Weslaco hits stride with road win over PSJA

BY TJ GARCIA | SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR

SAN JUAN — Weslaco Panthers coach Gabe Valdez has had his share of good basketball teams over the last 13 seasons.

Valdez has led his team to six district championships and to the playoffs eight of the last 10 years, he said.

The last two seasons have been particularly impressive. The Panthers are back-to-back district champions. And, in the playoffs, Valdez and his crew reached the area round both years.

Unfortunately, that’s where the story has ended for the Panthers. They’ve lost to two good teams, McAllen Rowe and Laredo Alexander, but they were stopped nonetheless.

“That (playoff losses) gives you motivation, though, and takes your forward,” said third-year varsity player Braxton Bloomquist, a junior. “We’ve been shut down in the second round of the playoffs, but we’re looking go further this year.”

If Tuesday night was any indication of what they’re capable of, they just might be a team that takes Valdez deeper into the postseason.

The Panthers are tall and quick. They are athletic, but play with good basketball instincts. Unfortunately for a young PSJA High team on Tuesday night, Weslaco (3-0) entered the Bears’ gym with purpose and easily beat them 78-32.

Weslaco was sparked by Bloomquist, Justice Free and Kalil Fino-A-Laseif with 10, 11 and 11 points respectively. The Panthers half-court trap was disruptive, forcing the Bears into 24 first-half turnovers and triggering a fast break that built Weslaco an insurmountable first-quarter lead.

Valdez said that this year he will count on 6-foot-2 guard Bloomquist as a creative scorer, 6-foot-3 Free as a rugged rebounding post and Fino-A-Laseif as a 6-foot-3 all-around guard. But he added that several players will play key minutes, and any one may lead the team on a given night.

“We are making progress. We still have lots of things to do. We have lots of components that we can put together,” said Valdez. “It looks promising. We have a good core coming back, and we have some players up from JV. So we have a good outlook for the year.”

Weslaco will get tested this weekend as it hits US Highway 281 north for a four-hour ride to play in the South San Antonio High School tournament. Valdez said his team’s length and quickness will allow them to employ a half-court trap and other pressure defense to get wins. The Panthers expect to be tested in District 31-6A with the likes of Los Fresnos and the Harlingen schools.

Valdez did not indicate he was particularly motivated just by moving further in the playoffs, but he did say that he is enjoying coaching this team. And he added that teaching and watching young players improve continues to keep him focused.

“I have great kids that come through the program every year,” he said. “A lot of people you don’t coach as much when you have talent. I feel the opposite. I like to coach kids that like to be coached. I’ve been very fortunate.”
