RGV swimmers and divers prep for district meet at New Year’s Classic

BY NATHANIEL MATA | SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR

The calendar shows a new year, but for high school swimming the season is winding down. The district, regional and state meets are looming.

This weekend in McAllen, at the MISD Natatorium, plenty of top area swimmers were on hand, swimming head-to-head. In two weeks, the pool will be the site of the crucial district meet that will send some swimmers home, and crown others champions moving on.

McAllen schools dominated the action over the weekend. McAllen High took first in the girls division, and second in the boys side of the meet. The McAllen Memorial Mustangs were first in boys and second in girls.

Sweeping top honors has been a theme for McAllen ISD of late. A season ago, the McHi boys and Memorial girls won district and regional titles.

McAllen ISD Swimming coordinator and diving coach Humberto Patch served as meet director. He was pleased with the state of the meet, which drew talent from Valley and Coastal Bend schools.

“It’s really important because this is your last meet before district,” Patch said. “A lot of teams that come here, Brownsville or even from Corpus are coming because they know we have tougher competition here, so it kind of pushes them. We like that, because it also pushes our McAllen kids.”

Despite being a couple weeks out from district, teams put a premium on secrecy and deception, at times. Swimmers may not always compete in their top event, sometimes to practice other strokes, other times to hide current times from their opponents.

Even while swimming off-events, many of the usual suspects had medals around their neck at the end of the meet.

Defending regional champion Shaine Casas won the 50-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle. He also took gold in 200 medley and 400 freestyle medley relay.

Max Saenz, another McHi bulldog with a gold from last season’s regional meet, is part of those relay teams.

A junior under coach Jared Kaminski, Saenz knows that swimming in every event is beneficial in high school and beyond.

“I’m getting around to all of my events so I have a list to choose from whenever I’m going to go for districts and find the best fit,” said Saenz, who took four gold home. “It’s very important because colleges tend to look at what you can do all around so they can place you wherever they need to, as opposed to just being able to swim one event and limiting yourself to what certain colleges need.”

Saenz was a gold medalist in the 200 individual medley during the regional meet a year ago, proof that well-rounded swimming is something he excels in.

Weslaco’s Daryl Wells is a sophomore who came up a few seconds short of a state appearance in the 100 butterfly last year. He’s hoping a year of hard work will be his opportunity to advance to Austin.

“It’s funny when you’re swimming against this competition, because usually you train with them,” Wells said. “Right now I’m seeded 3rd in the 100-butterfly. I know by regionals I can drop [time] if I can keep doing what I’m doing right now. This meet shows where you’re at, so you know what you need to work on for when district comes.”

He is chasing Casas and Saenz’s time in the butterfly, however he won gold in the 200 freestyle during the New Year’s Classic.

McAllen Memorial girls may have earned second place, but some of their top swimmers were on full display over the weekend.

Sophomore Stacia Benitez had two individual top-3 finishes, including a gold in the 100 backstroke. She was also part of a relay gold finish in the 200 medley. Hannah Bradford won 100 backstroke gold and 50 freestyle silver. Benitez and Bradford combined for three individual gold medals at last year’s regional meet.

Memorial looking to find health, form in second round

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

The McAllen Memorial boys team has had the misfortune of being unlucky in a highly competitive District 30-6A. The Mustangs have struggled in a situation that left little margin for error.

Memorial (14-12, 1-3) got off to a hot start, playing tough against some of the better teams in the Rio Grande Valley and getting some marquee wins. Then the injury bug hit, and it hit hard. The injuries the Mustangs suffered weren’t season-ending, but they were nagging. A hamstring here, an ankle there. For a team that doesn’t usually go deeper than a 6- or 7-player rotation, the injuries have been debilitating.

That’s not where the bad luck ended, however. Memorial lost several crucial district games by close margins. Overtime losses to La Joya Palmview and La Joya High hurt, but the worst of the bunch was losing a rivalry game to McAllen High.

“We were up by 7, we missed some shots, and they turned around and converted,” McAllen Memorial coach Sam Cortez said. “We had an offensive charge called on us, and that could have gotten it down to 5. Then, they turned around and hit a 3. That was a five-point swing. And then they hit a bank 3 also, and that was the difference in the game. We lost by three. It’s inner city rivals, and coach Flores does a good job over there with those kids. You are always going to battle. But right now, it feels like we are a little snake bit. The ball’s not bouncing our way.”

The good news for the Mustangs is that the season is still young, and they have the talent to get back into the playoff race.

For Memorial, everything hinges on junior guard Josh Sanchez.

“I think that he’s got a lot of growing to do, because he was the young one from last year’s team,” Cortez said. “This year, he is our go-to guy. He still gets his 16-18 points for us, but now, he has to carry the load, too.”

Sanchez, the younger brother of former Memorial quarterback Jonathan Sanchez, has had success this season, averaging 16.8 points per game. He ranks as the sixth best scorer in the Valley.

If Memorial can get healthy and Sanchez can continue his progression, Cortez believes Memorial is one of the best teams in District 30-6A, and one of the better teams in the Valley.

“I still say, if we get healthy, we are a different ball club,” Cortez said. “We are 1-3, but we very easily could be 4-0, and I believe we are the best 1-3 team.”

CHANGING THE GAME

The Edcouch-Elsa girls team picked up a pair of wins last week. The wins over Lopez, 63-22, and Porter, 57-23, on Tuesday and Friday, respectively, give the Yellowjackets a three-game winning streak after an 0-4 start in District 32-5A.

“It was very exciting,” Edcouch-Elsa coach Daniel Richardson said. “We had been in a slump. I tried something new. I did five in and five out with the girls. And they responded on the court. They are playing well. I’m sticking with it until they prove otherwise. That was the only change that was really made.”

The Yellowjackets have a talented group, but a tough start to the season had some of the players feeling down. Their lack of excitement about the season translated to a lack of effort on the court, according to Richardson.

One of the turning points of the season was during a game against Mercedes on Jan. 3.

“That game, it put some things in perspective for me and the girls,” Richardson said. “I went home and — it wasn’t so much that we had lost to them, it was the way we lost to them. I didn’t feel like we should have been in that game. We had girls on the court that just kind of gave up. From there, I started searching, because I wanted girls on the court that would keep pushing. I started to sit down and evaluate everything.”

Richardson knew he had to find a way to get his team going. He decided to try to get them to compete more in practice.

“We were practicing one day, and I was just trying to find a way to get the girls to start competing, because we would come out flat a lot in games,” Richardson said. “So, one day in practice I just started separating them based on I guess who I thought was more or less about the same type of game. I started separating girls. When they started playing, I noticed they were a lot more aggressive than I was used to seeing. I kind of discussed it with my coaches and we decided to go with it and see what happens. And it has paid off so far.”

The group that started Friday’s game was Ashley Galarza, Cassandra Zuniga, Cassandra Hernanadez, Desiree Garza and Alinah Rodriguez. The group that spelled them about four minuets into each quarter was Jayda Lee, Yara Ibarra, Shannon Dominguez, Lexie Moreno and Mayra Delgado. Nyra Jimenez was able to float in and out, allowing the groups more flexibility.

Richardson hopes the new-look Yellowjackets can rally this season and start to rebuild the program into one that fits into a much tougher District 32-5A.

BALANCING ACT

The Hidalgo girls team is an example of how to construct a balanced team that can play with anyone. Every player complements each other. Every sub helps the team on the floor. Every play is designed to put every player in the best position to succeed.

The Pirates (17-10, 6-1) have a powerful frontcourt duo in Barbie Gutierrez and Karla Cantu. Gutierrez can run the team and is often the first one down the court, leading to fast break chances. Cantu brings unparalleled power, giving her the edge in rebounding and screening. The guard tandem of Alexis and Ashley Arjona, the daughters of coach Saul Arjona, are the shooters. The Arjona sisters have been pivotal weapons on offense.

“With them both shooting well, it forced defenses to come out and pressure them,” Saul Arjona said. “That leaves room on the inside for Karla and Barbie. Ashley and Alexis, those are my shooters. I always tell them to start shooting early. ‘You guys have the green light.’ Because once they start hitting, it gives Karla and Barbie a little more leeway to do their job. Even if we miss our shots, Karla and Barbie can get the rebounds, and they are there for a putback. That’s what gives Ashley and Alexis the confidence to shoot early and often.”

Coming off the bench is freshman point guard Savannah Sanchez. She can run the point and manage the up-tempo offense that Saul Arjona prefers, but she is also a good change of pace option to put alongside starting point guard Ashley Arjona.

The mostly juniors and seniors in the starting lineup compliment the six freshman coming off the bench. That not only makes the team better this year, but it builds a strong class of players who will be ready to lead the team next year as sophomores.

After a loss to La Feria in the first round of district play, Hidalgo is eager to play La Feria again on Tuesday.

McAllen Rowe’s Yebra notches win No. 500

SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

McAllen Rowe boys basketball coach Jose Luis Yebra picked up career win No. 500 on Friday.

Rowe (18-5, 2-0) beat La Joya Palmview 39-36 in a District 30-6A game at McAllen Rowe.

“One of my favorite moments of the night — after of course getting the win — was seeing my wife and my kids there,” Yebra said. “You never expect that you are going to get to this point. You never think that you can win 500 games. You look back and you might have said you want to have a successful career, but never in your wildest dreams do you think you are going to get to 500 wins. My family, my wife and my kids. Seeing them, that was a special moment.”

The game was made more interesting because La Joya Palmview’s coach is Andy Saenz.

“Palmview played a great game,” Yebra said. “They came to play. Andy is one of my former players who had a lot to do with those 500 wins, too.”

Another former player of Yebra’s, Marco Hinojosa, now coaches at Los Fresnos. Hinojosa had an earlier game, so he made the trip over to Rowe to see Yebra hit the milestone.

“When I look back at when I first started at Lopez high school, he was one of my first freshman,” Yebra said of Hinojosa. “It was very exciting to see him there, and to see a lot of my former players there celebrating with us. That’s what I told our kids. It’s about the players that have played for our program, and it’s about the assistant coaches. I had some great coaches that helped me obtain this milestone.”

POWERFUL DUO LEADING SHARYLAND HIGH

A pair of seniors has been leading the Sharyland High boys basketball team this season. The duo of guard Sean Tucker and forward Kale Cator have proven to be two of the most talented players in District 31-5A.

For much of his career, Cator had played with his back to the basket in the low post. His athleticism allowed him to flourish in the role and put up big numbers, but the fit wasn’t quite right. This year, Sharyland coach David Keith made a decision to help the forward.

The Rattlers (7-13, 4-3) have played much of this year without focusing on the low post. The move has allowed Cator to play facing the basket. Last year, Cator averaged just 3.7 points per game. This year he is averaging 11.1.

“Once we got him facing the basket, his offensive game started to pick up and his defense started to pick up,” Keith said. “He’s gotten better every game, every day really. He’s getting better and better. He’s just a tremendous athlete with an incredible work ethic.”

Perhaps a counterintuitive figure, Cator’s rebounds per game have gone up from 3.2 last year to 6.3 this year.

The second half of the duo, Tucker, has had a tremendous season. He is currently third in The Rio Grande Valley with 17.4 points per game.

“I hope you can understand I am a little biased, but this is my 11th year as a head coach and 18th overall,” Keith said. “Throughout those years I’ve seen good guards come through our school and other schools. This kids ranks up there. At least right now, I would say he is one of the top three guards in the Valley.”

Tucker has been unstoppable at times this season, and he’s not even playing his natural position.

“He’s forced to play the point guard position, because we don’t have anyone else who can handle the ball,” Keith said. “But, he is a natural two.”

Tucker found success last year running off screens and getting open without the ball. This year he has had to create his own shot. But, that hasn’t slowed him at all.

“There isn’t anybody we have met, from here to San Antonio, that can stop him in a one-on-one situation,” Keith said. “They are sending multiple helpers to stop his penetration. And if you don’t close out on his shot, he’s shooting right around 53-54 percent from the 3-point line, which is incredibly amazing. His shot selection, his IQ, is high. He can shoot lights out.”

Sharyland beat Rio Grande City 57-53 on Friday.

DONNA HIGH STARTING TO GEL

The Donna High girls basketball team entered the year with a roster full of seniors and sophomores. It took some time for the team to start to click. The non-district schedule had ups and downs.

The Redskins, however, hit their stride at just the right time, and have been on a roll ever since.

“The first district game against Mercedes, we came out really flat,” Donna High coach Kevin Kromer said. “We didn’t score in the first quarter. That was the worst quarter of our season. And they just kind of flipped a switch in the second quarter. We played even with them the rest of the way. I think we’ve had one quarter since then where we scored single digits. I don’t know what it was. I didn’t say anything to them. I think the maturity just clicked. They didn’t like the way they were playing. They decided to relax, free themselves up and start playing a little more relaxed.”

Senior forward Alex Cantu played a role in that. Cantu is one of the leaders on the team. She, along with the other seniors, decided to step up and get the team on track.

The Redskins (4-1 in District 32-5A) are coming off of a 47-44 win over Donna North on Friday. As the attention turns towards finishing out the season, Kromer says the focus is on the little things.

“We are focused on our offense,” Kromer said. “We are cutting down on turnovers and correcting little mistakes here and there on defense. We are trying to make it better everyday, trying to make everything better, and eliminate as many errors as possible.”

GROWING PAINS

The Progreso girls basketball team graduated seven seniors last year.

Then they brought in coach Lydia De Leon.

The combination of a new coach and a young team has meant the team has had to fight for all six wins this year. But, it doesn’t mean that the season is a waste.

De Leon came in right away and wanted to make the team better.

“The first thing was seeing what kind of talent we have here,” De Leon said. “Instead of focusing on the wins, I am telling the girls to focus on the progress. What we are doing to get better.”

The young team has been led by junior forward Sydney Alaniz. Alaniz is averaging 12.8 points per game. Alaniz has contributed with more than just points, though.

“Everybody feeds off of her, and you can tell,” De Leon said. “When she has a bad game, we tend to have a bad game with her, and vice versa.”

The focus has been on remaining positive. That can be very tough, especially when the players have to hear about their lack of wins from friends and classmates. But, De Leon has helped the team block out the noise and focus on improving.

“It’s all about positive reinforcement,” De Leon said. “I tell them every day you have to be humble enough to learn, but hungry enough to be the best. We are just trying to get them to pick up good habits. I call the gym the classroom. We go in there, and we learn, and we get better, and that’s all that matters.”
