McAllen High holds on for big district win

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — The two best teams in District 30-6A met on Tuesday night in a heavyweight showdown.

La Joya Palmview and McAllen High both came into the game with 4-0 district records, and McAllen High held on to earn the 4-2 victory.

“It was very exciting,” McAllen High junior Robbie Maldonado said. “It was a win to be first in district, and we accomplished it.”

Many fans had hoped for a matchup of the aces, but both teams stuck with their rotations, and the offense was still tame, at best.

McAllen High scored its four runs without an extra-base hit. Palmview only had two extra-base hits, stranding one of the runners at second.

Both pitchers threw great games. Palmview senior Elias Ovalle threw all seven, giving up just four hits and two walks while fanning six. McHi answered with junior Abanny Garcia, who shook off a sore knee to throw a masterful complete game.

Garcia pumped strikes into the zone, throwing off Palmview’s patient approach. He struck out 16 while scattering 4 hits and 2 runs.

“I felt great out there today,” Garcia said. “My fastball was really working for me. That is one of my best starts.”

Garcia has had a nagging knee soreness for a little while. He wore a knee brace, which he said gave him more of an issue than the injury itself. But he shook off the discomfort to continue his dominant start. Garcia had a perfect game through four innings with 10 strikeouts before Palmview senior designated hitter Jesus Guzman led off the fifth with a double. Palmview would score two runs in that inning on three hits and an error.

Palmview’s Ovalle was let down by his defense.

“We didn’t hit one single ball hard today,” McAllen High coach Eliseo Pompa said. “That is just the way baseball is. We hit a dinker over there and scored a run, passed ball, we scored a run, and we won 4-2. Sometimes you have to be lucky. I think today, the baseball gods were with us.”

McHi created runs with aggressive base running. In the third inning, Maldonado showed off his wheels by legging out an infield single. He advanced all the way around the bases one passed ball at a time.

Maldonado beat out a close play at home after the ball went to Palmview sophomore catcher Albino Villarreal’s right. Villarreal retrieved it quickly and delivered an accurate throw, but Maldonado slid in ahead of the tag from Ovalle.

“It was instinct,” Maldonado said. “Whatever they give me, I’m going to take. I took a quick glance to see if it got past him, it did and I went.”

The Bulldogs added another run later that inning, when a ball dropped in between the second baseman, first baseman and right fielder, who all expected the other to make the play.

“We were very fired up after that inning,” Maldonado said. “It got us the lead, and it put us in a situation where we could get the momentum on our side.”

In the bottom of the fourth, McAllen High freshman third baseman Aaron Nixon reached on a leadoff walk. He stole second, then came home on a throw that got past the first baseman on a routine groundout. Nixon’s heads-up base running led to the winning run.

In the sixth, McAllen High tacked on an insurance run when senior Luis Keola Zamora reached on an error, stole second and came home on another passed ball.

The difference in the game was Garcia’s stellar pitching.

“He’s always been a pitcher that keeps the ball low and throws strikes,” Pompa said.

“I always throw strikes, because if they hit the ball, I know my defense can get to it,” Garcia added.

Maldonado says the team takes great pride in being able to field for Garica and the rest of the staff.

“We work very hard every day on our defense,” Maldonado said. “Defense is the key to winning.”

Sharyland schools shows well at Valley View tournament

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

The Sharyland High boys and girls golf teams preformed extraordinarily well at the Valley View ISD Invitational.

The tournament was crucial because it is the last before the district tournaments. It was even more important for teams from District 31-5A, because it’s the same course they will play on for district.

The Sharyland High girls team, in particular, had a great showing. The Sharyland A team came in first in the team standings with a two-day score of 639, toping second-place Sharyland Pioneer’s 757 by 118 strokes. The Sharyland B team was just behind Pioneer with a score of 785.

“It helps to play this course before district,” Sharyland High coach Fernando Rodriguez said. “This is the second time we played it. They played really well, considering the conditions on Friday.”

Friday’s competition was marred by heavy winds. The gusts of wind were blowing at up to 35 miles per hour.

Teams had been hoping to get accustomed to the new out-of-bounds line at this tournament. The line was moved in on the left side of the course. The wind on Friday was blowing right to left, the new boundaries even more restrictive.

The wind also had an effect on the short game and on putting. The winds dried out the greens, making them firm, which makes the ball go faster.

Saturday, the conditions were much better, and it showed in the scores.

Sharyland has a young team, devoid of any seniors. The Rattlers have plenty of experience with juniors Laura Rodriguez and Raquel Flores, who were on last year’s team that came in second at regionals and fourth at state.

“Laura and Raquel have been playing the leadership role, and the other girls have fed off of that,” Fernando Rodriguez said.

The leader of the B team was sophomore Gabriella Ozuna, whose two-day score of 176 was good for sixth place overall.

“She’s been a big surprise this year,” Fernando Rodriguez said. “She has definitely improved from last year. Last year, she was struggling big time, and this year, she has had a complete turnaround. She is constantly practicing and trying to improve her game.”

STRIKING DISTANCE

Sharyland Pioneer coach Susan Lopez was definitive about the girls team’s play at the Valley View Invitational.

“We did not play our best golf,” she said.

There is good and bad to that. Of course, Lopez would rather get the bad round now, as opposed to during the district tournament. But, with two weeks to go, there isn’t a lot of time for refinement.

“Friday’s wind really affected everybody,” Lopez said. “And then Saturday, their putting was off. We did not play to our potential.”

One person who did play well for Pioneer was junior Maria Guajardo. Guajardo shot a two-day 163, good for fifth place.

“I’m very happy with her performance,” Lopez said. “She went even on the back nine, the second day. That just shows that the hard work that she is putting into her game is going to pay off.”

The biggest thing Lopez wants Guajardo and the rest of the Diamondbacks to focus on is the short game.

“I know from my experience that the short game is going to either make us or break us,” Lopez said. “So that is where we are going to spend a lot of our time, everything from 100 yards in.”

The team is focused on being one of the top two teams at district, which would qualify it for a repeat trip to regionals.

MENTAL GAME

The Sharyland High boys team also took first, but hot on its tails was Mission Veterans. Sharyland had a score of 630. Mission Veterans was the only other team in the 600s, with a score of 686.

The senior duo of Aaron Martinez and Diego Hernandez led the way for the Patriots.

Martinez and Hernandez have been playing golf together for years.

Martinez came in third at the Valley View Invitational with a two-day score of 155. He was just one shot behind Sharyland High’s Victor Rodriguez.

Hernandez shot a 162, giving him a sixth-place finish.

Mission Veterans also has a player coming back who could make a difference at the district tournament. Andres Lopez was forced to miss the Valley View tournament because of an illness.

“He will be ready for district,” Mission Veterans coach Jorge Longoria said. “He’s a guy that shoots in the low 80s, upper 70s. We are expecting him to step up for us, now that he is healthy.”

Longoria says the focus now is on the mental game.

“We don’t want to be thinking about who else is playing or how they are doing,” Longoria said. “We are focused on our next shot, our play. That’s all we can control.”

Hernandez, who played quarterback for the football team, is the clubhouse leader in mental toughness. If he has a rival, it’s Martinez.

The two are never rattled, and that demeanor has spread to the rest of the team, as well.

“If we can keep our mental game sharp, and make sure we sink our putts, I think we will be ok,” Longoria said.

Sepulveda leading Rio Grande City to new heights

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

On Tuesday, Rio Grande City pulled off a huge win over Mission Veterans.

The game was scoreless into the fifth inning. The Patriots struck first, plating a run in the bottom of the fifth. Rio Grande City responded right away, scoring two in the sixth.

The reply was a welcome relief for junior pitcher Ruben Sepulveda. Sepulveda has been an outstanding starter for a while now, but this season he has had some bad luck. The offensive support and the defensive support have let Sepulveda down at times this season.

“We lost to Roma 1-0,” Rio coach Roque Cortinas said. “He threw a one hitter with 15 strikeouts, and we ended up losing. That shows that defensively, we didn’t play well, and we didn’t hit the ball.”

On Tuesday, everything went good enough for Sepulveda, who threw lights out and shut down one of the most potent offenses in the Valley.

“When he’s on the mound, we are in every ball game,” Cortinas said. “It’s just a matter of helping him out defensively and getting some runs across.”

Sepulveda has two distinct physical advantages that make him a nightmare for opposing hitters. The first is he throws left-handed — a rarity in Valley baseball. With very few lefties pitching, the different look changes a lot for hitters and can throw them off.

The second advantage is height. At 6-foot-2, Sepulveda’s long frame creates a big problem for hitters. Because of his height and wingspan, the ball is released from his hand much closer to the plate than a pitcher at an average height for the Valley. This gives hitters much less time to read and react to the pitch.

The physical gifts aren’t worth anything, though, without the talent to back it up. Sepulveda has proven he does. His three-pitch mix is deadly.

“At the beginning of last year, he was basically a fastball, curveball pitcher,” Cortinas said. “We were able to work with him to develop his changeup, which has been his money pitch this year.”

His confidence and trust in the changeup have grown, and now it is a pitch he can rely on in a sticky situation.

“(On Tuesday), we had a situation where he had runners on second and third, two out,” Cortinas said. “Cristian Ramos was up at the plate, good hitter, full-count and he threw him a changeup. It totally fooled him and he got the strikeout.”

The Rattlers now have a four-game winning streak and are looking to keep climbing in the district standings.

“Tuesday was a big win for us,” Cortinas said. “It gave us the motivation to keep it going in the right direction.”

THE RIGHT MOVE

The Donna High Redskins know they have to prove themselves. They are in a tough district with several competitive teams.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t right in the thick of things. On Tuesday, Donna High (7-7, 2-2) beat Brownsville Porter. Donna has won two of its last three games and is tied for second in the district.

“We are approaching it with a business-like mentality,” Donna coach Joey Ramirez said. “We are not going to celebrate those huge victories for too long. We are just taking it one game at a time.”

Part of what has led to the recent success for Donna is Ramirez’s willingness to try new things and experiment with lineups and positions for just about all his players.

Donna has a roster full of kids who love baseball. In Donna, football has long been king, but many of the baseball players hope to bring the same level of hype and intensity to the diamond.

Those kids have shown a willingness to try whatever Ramirez suggests.

One of the big switches was moving his son Jeremy Ramirez, a natural shortstop, to catcher.

Jeremy Ramirez has experience at catcher and used to catch his older brother Trey Ramirez. Trey was a standout at Donna and is now playing college baseball.

Jeremy Ramirez’s move has helped the team. He knows the game as well as just about anybody, and having him there lining up the defense, calling pitches and encouraging his teammates has made a huge difference.

“He’s doing exactly what we are asking him to do as a team player,” Joey Ramirez said. “(On Tuesday), I didn’t even call a single pitch. He’s the one who called the game.”

Jeremy Ramirez is also the second hitter in the order. His bat is a crucial part of the lineup.

“He’s hitting the ball awesome right now,” Joey Ramirez said. “I think he’s batting over .600. It all goes with tracking the ball. Behind the plate, you see the ball consistently and then when he goes up to bat, he’s seeing the ball really well.”

After games against Donna North and Brownsville Pace later this month, Donna High faces a tough stretch of games. The team hosts Brownsville Veterans and Mercedes before going to Edcouch-Elsa.

The Redskins will need to play well during that stretch to cement themselves as one of the top teams in the district. Joey Ramirez feels that this stretch of good play they have had is indicative of things to come.

“We found out who needs to be where and its getting there,” Joey Ramirez said. “That’s what we were looking for. And we are getting W’s now because of the changes we made.”

Yellowjackets take run-rule victory over rival Mercedes

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

MERCEDES — A district win is great. Make it a shutout? Even better. Add the ten-run rule, and that’s just about the peak of a great outing. Edcouch-Elsa took that even one step further by beating its rival Mercedes on the Tigers’ home field 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday.

“It’s our first shutout five-inning win all season,” Edcouch-Elsa coach Ryan Garza said. “What better place to do it than on this field, against our rival Mercedes. It’s a great feeling.”

Edcouch-Elsa junior pitcher Joseph Gonzalez turned in the shutout. He pitched all five innings, getting six punchouts along the way. He scattered two hits and three walks and did it all in a tidy 85 pitches.

“In the first inning, (our offense) gave me a good cushion,” Gonzalez said. “So I came out there, and I felt comfortable. I guess I threw pretty good.”

While Gonzalez remains humble about his outing, his catcher, senior Steve Perez, was a bit more excited about his pitcher’s performance.

“(Gonzalez) really has his high fastball working,” Perez said. “Everybody was chasing the high fastball.”

Gonzalez even gave himself a boost with a good day at the dish. He went 2 for 3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

“Joseph been phenomenal all season,” Garza said. “He threw a heck of a game. I feel like I say that every single game. He’s been a horse the whole way. He’s mentally strong and mentally tough.”

Perez also had a big day at the plate. He started the game with a walk and scored the last run in the fifth and final inning. Overall, Perez went 2 for 3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

“I was just jumping on the fastball,” Perez said. “They were throwing a lot of curveballs. I looked them in and did what I could. When I got the fastball, I jumped on it.”

Now, time for a baseball riddle. How did the Yellowjackets plate four runs in the first inning without recording a hit?

Edcouch-Elsa accomplished this rare feat with five walks, two stolen bases, a defensive error and an RBI groundout.

“It was big for us,” Garza said. “It gets some confidence in you as a team. We got their pitch count up to 45. Our whole thing is to bring up the pitch count, and they will take (the pitcher) out of the game like they did in the second inning.”

In the first inning, Mercedes senior pitcher Oliver Closner threw 45 pitches. He added 33 in the next inning, and the 78 pitches, combined with the Yellowjackets 5-0 lead, chased Closner after the second.

E-E senior second baseman Josh Garcia showed how the ’Jackets can be productive even on an off night at the plate. His 0 for 2 at the plate doesn’t seem like much at first glance. Hidden behind the hitting line is a walk in the first inning. He turned that walk into a run by stealing second and coming home on a wild pitch. Garcia did more of the same in the second. He was hit by a pitch, made an excellent decision to take third on a single and barely beat the throw. Then, he scored on another wild pitch. His first at-bat cost Closner five pitches. In the second, it was an eight-pitch at-bat.

Garcia’s run in the second inning was all about a great read.

“I saw (Mercedes’ catcher) trying to block it up, and it got away from him,” Garcia said. “He didn’t know where the ball was, so I just took it.”

That’s what the Yellowjackets have done all year. They weren’t given respect, but they have taken it by getting big win after big win. And Tuesday’s win over Mercedes gives the Yellowjackets even more confidence as the team moved to 5-8 overall and 3-1 in District 32-5A, good for a tie for first place in the league standings. Mercedes dropped to 4-6 overall, 1-2 in district.

“We are the best team in the district,” Garcia said. “We work on it every day, and we practice the way we play. We give it 100 percent, and it shows in the games.”

PHARR — For the second time in three games, Edinburg North racked up seven runs in the first inning. On Tuesday, the early outburst led to an 18-3 win in five innings against PSJA North.

Before the lopsided win, Edinburg North had been struggling to put together a complete offensive performance. Tuesday night may have been the turnaround coach Damian Gonzalez has been looking for.

“Our approach at the plate tonight was totally different. We were aggressive in favorable counts,” Gonzalez said. “The kids knew what to look for tonight. We worked both sides of the plate tonight, and our kids stayed patient at the plate.”

Edinburg North’s offense got help from the top, middle and bottom of the order. Leadoff man and starting pitcher Argelio Guajardo went 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI triple in the first inning. Saul Garza and Jon Salas, both seniors, also chipped away in the first inning.

The seven run frame was highlighted by a three-run double from Salas that made it 6-0 Edinburg North. Salas finished the night 2 for 2 with three RBIs, two walks and three runs scored.

“Tonight, I saw the ball well. I’m in the nine hole, and it’s important for me to get on base to set up the top of the order,” Salas said. “We have been struggling lately, but tonight we got the sticks going, and now it’s on to our next challenge in Edinburg Economedes.”

Garza had a breakout game against the Raiders, collecting five RBIs as part of a 3 for 3 night. Garza sealed the win with a three-run triple in the fifth inning to give Edinburg North a commanding 17-3 lead.

Edinburg North moves to 3-0 in District 31-6A with wins over Edinburg Vela, PSJA Southwest and PSJA North. The Cougars have been banking on the big inning. Against Vela, Edinburg North used a seven-run first inning. Against PSJA Southwest, Edinburg North plated eight runs in the fourth. Tuesday night was no different. The Cougars pounded away for 13 hits and 18 runs — two shy of their season high of 20, against Donna North.

Guajardo, a sophomore, got the nod on the mound for Edinburg North with ace Carlo Servin occupying the shortstop position. Guajardo pitched three innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Guajardo struck out two and walked four.

Along with a strong lineup, Guajardo could be the key ingredient in what is shaping up to be a three-man rotation with Servin and Marc Esquivel. The development of Guajardo will be big for the Cougars down the stretch. At times, Guajardo struggled to find the strike zone, but he settled down and managed to pitch out of a jam in the third inning.

“It’s extremely important to develop a rotation, especially with the new rules and with the pitch count. We need these guys to get their work in, and that’s why we decided to throw him tonight,” Gonzalez said. “In the past, we have had some weather delays, and our kids missed out on some innings, but we are preparing for the long run, and we rolled the dice tonight, and it paid off. He (Guajardo) had pitched a couple of good games for us in Laredo and La Joya, but going back to the weather being a factor threw him off a bit, so tonight was big for him and for us moving forward.”
