Panthers still rolling, growing with second tournament win

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

PHARR — Just over a week ago, the Weslaco High Panthers hadn’t won a tournament since 2010. Now they have two wins in two weeks.

“We are taking the strides to get to where we need to be,” Weslaco coach Gabe Valdez said. “These three tournaments, back-to-back-to-back, have really helped us. We have played a lot of basketball over the last three weeks. Those three — Caleb, Isaiah and Safi — are our soul of this team, coming back from last year. And they have shown over the last few weeks, what they are made of.”

As senior guard Safi Fino-A-Laself sliced and diced his way through the Brownsville Veterans defense, senior guards Isaiah Garcia and Caleb Ybarra added more firepower to the Panthers attack, and the Brownsville Veterans Chargers couldn’t find enough to counter. The Panthers beat the Chargers, 65-43, in the Platinum Bracket final of the PSJA Tri-City Classic tournament Saturday.

Fino-A-Laself scored 22 to lead the Panthers.

“Safi has worked on his game, a lot, over the summer,” Valdez said. “He’s kind of developed into a complete player. He’s got to tweak some things, but he is just Safi, and he does a great job for us. … Him being able to penetrate and pop up, creates so much more for him. Because he is so quick, and he is such a great athlete, it has allowed him to do other things, and get to the basket.”

Fino-A-Laself scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half, allowing the Panthers to pull away from an extremely tough Vets team.

Coming into the final, the Chargers had one of the toughest paths, going through Rio Grande City, Laredo United South and South San Antonio.

Junior forward Damian Maldonado was a force down low for the Chargers, and junior guard Justin Anaya had a game-high 23 points in the final, a sign of how hot he was all tournament long.

“Damian and Anaya, we knew we had to stop those two,” Valdez said. “They are the heart and soul of that team. Coming into tonight, the championship game, we knew we had to limit their touches. We tried as best as we could, they are just great athletes.”

Both Chargers were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with the Rugrats of Weslaco, Ybarra, Garcia and Fino-A-Laself, who won his second tournament MVP award in as many weeks.

“It feels great,” Fino-A-Laself said. “I have worked really hard for this, ever since I was a little kid. It feels good to earn it two times, especially in my senior year.”

Maldonado is one of the bigger players in the Valley, and he is a tough matchup for anyone, let alone a Weslaco team with a ton of inexperience in the frontcourt. Junior Rolando Berrones drew the assignment of guarding Maldonado in some of the biggest stretches of the game, and his teammates loved every minute of it.

“He did a really good job today,” Fino-A-Laself said. “I’ve known Damian for a while, and he is a really good scorer. For Rollie to be able to ‘D’ him up like that, it is amazing. Especially, Rollie is starting to come around, he did really well today.”

“He played great defense,” Garcia added. “He is a tremendous paint protector.”

Ybarra scored 10 points in Saturday’s final.

“Caleb is more of a scorer, but he knows how to put the clamps on anyone,” Fino-A-Laself said. “That is really what we do. He puts his all into that, so we can excel on the offensive end.”

“For us, because they take so many of our shots, Isaiah and Safi, take so much attention offensively,” Valdez said. “They kind of leave Caleb unattended. He stepped it up, and hit some big buckets for us. But Caleb thrives on his defense.”

Garcia scored nine in the final, and sophomore big man JJ Balderas also had nine.

PLUNDERING PIRATES

The Hidalgo Pirates found themselves in the Sliver Bracket on Friday, after a tough first day of the tournament, but Hidalgo hasn’t lost since.

The Pirates cruised through the bracket like a pirate ship through open waters, culminating in a 64-46 win over PSJA Southwest for the title.

Saul Arjona and Gus Sanchez were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Pirates.

THE REST

The Silver Consolation championship went to Weslaco East, which topped Brownsville Hanna 46-35.

The Platinum Consolation championship pitted Edcouch-Elsa against Laredo Martin. After playing their first game at 8 a.m. against the tough defense of Rio Grande City, the Yellow Jackets didn’t quite have their legs in the final game, as Martin won 63-32.

Rounding out the All-Tournament Team were South San Antonio’s Jason Arcorta and Manuel Paredes, Sharyland Pioneer’s Luke Padilla and Eddie Marburger, Harlingen South’s Grant Lowery and PSJA Southwest’s Carlos Hernandez.

Ovalle heats up as Mercedes takes over in non-district win

BY TJ GARCIA | SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR

MERCEDES – The Mercedes Tigers’ sharp-shooter Jordan Ovalle exploded in the second quarter with 17 points and Mercedes put on a shooting clinic in an 89-68 blowout victory over Sharyland High on Friday night.

The 5-foot-7 Ovalle bottomed four threes in leading the Tigers’ offensive onslaught in the second period, during which Mercedes outscored scored Sharyland 35-11 and never looked back.

“That was our best first half, scoring 52, this year,” said Mercedes coach Rick Trevino. “We had a really good offensive performance. Even stuff we were missing guys were picking them up and putting them back in.”

Mercedes went on a 24-7 run to close out the second and missed just four shots the entire period, going 12 for 16 from the floor. The Tigers also grabbed all four missed shots and scored eight second-chance points.

It was about as perfect a period as a team could have. The Tigers forced 13 Sharyland turnovers in the first half, often leading to quick baskets on the other end. Their passing was sharp and communication was obvious. The win improves Mercedes’ overall record to 16-5, and sets the Tigers up to begin district play in a couple of weeks.

The only bad news for the Mercedes was the injury to talented forward Brandon Lozoya, who appeared to hurt his ankle. He had 13 points and four rebounds before he was carried off the court midway through the third quarter. No word was immediately available regarding the extent of the injury.

Still, it was nearly all smiles for the Tigers, who built leads of up to 34 points in the third quarter before emptying the bench for the fourth quarter.

All but one player on the roster scored. In addition to Ovalle, Caleb Arthur posted 14 points with an array of inside shots and put backs, while Jesse Fuentes added 10 points to round out those in double digits.

The game started slowly with Mercedes hanging on to a small 17-15 lead after one. Sharyland got all its points from five treys and was hot from the arc, especially junior guard Nazier Moore. But all that was before Ovalle threw gas on the basketball flame. He said he knew he was on almost immediately.

“I’m on fire. Give me the ball. I’m going to make them,” said the junior guard of his mentality that quarter. “Everyone has the green light. If you see an open shot take it.”

Ovalle finished with 23 points, didn’t play the fourth quarter, and had several assists and steals. Ovalle and Trevino both said they like where the Tigers are at this point in the season, but know they have a difficult district schedule ahead of them.

For Sharyland, it was paced on offense by senior forward Andres Abrego’s 15 points and junior guard Johnny Escamilla’s 14. Much of Sharyland’s points came in the final quarter with Tigers’ starter already out. Moore added 12.

Final day filled with top teams

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

The final four is set in both Valley tournaments taking place this weekend.

Sharyland Pioneer and Harlingen South battled into the night to determine the final team that will still be in the running for the PSJA Tri-City Classic title on Saturday, while the City of Palms tournament has tantalizing matchups now lined up for the final day.

The highlight of the day was the chance for the Running Bobcats of Edinburg High to go toe-to-toe with the Panthers of Weslaco High in a what could be a preview of the District 31-6A title race.

The Bobcats got off to a strong start, but the Weslaco High defense clamped down and prevented the Bobcats from getting the shots they wanted.

EHS seniors Antoine Woodard and Ricky Alaniz found their range early. Alaniz knocked down two triples and Woodard scored 10 points, including two 3s, all in the first quarter.

The Bobcats would hit just one 3-pointer in the final three quarters.

While Caleb Ybarra was the anchor on defense for the Panthers, the other two-thirds of the Weslaco High trio of senior guards, known as the Rugrats, Safi Fino-A-Laself and Isaiah Garcia carried the load on offense.

The two combined for 19 points in the second half to power the Panthers to the win, 57-40.

The Panthers join Brownsville Veterans, South San Antonio and Sharyland Pioneer as the four teams left standing in the PSJA tournament.

Pioneer got a great game from senior forward Taggart Chandler who finished with 11 points. Junior Luke Padilla added 12 points and Aaron Cuevas and Eddie Lee Marburger each scored 8 to get the Diamondbacks past the Hawks and into the final.

BOOTY FOR THE PIRATES

The Hidalgo Pirates won a big matchup Friday night, 62-54 over McAllen Memorial, to continue their quest toward the treasure that is the Silver Bracket title.

The Pirates got a clutch performance from Gus Sanchez, who buried two baskets while being fouled, late in the fourth quarter. Sanchez converted both three-point plays.

Sanchez finished with 15 points. Saul Arjona led the Pirates with 17.

Juniors Kobe Gushwa and Zyan Gregory led the way for the Mustangs in a heartbreaker.

ALL PALMS ON DECK

The City of Palms Tournament may have some of the best matchups scheduled for the final day of the tournament.

McAllen High and Los Fresnos will meet in the early semifinal, before McAllen Rowe and Edinburg Economedes square off to determine the other finalist.

The championship game is set for 6 p.m. at McAllen Rowe High School.

McAllen High went through San Benito and Tamaulipas, both on Thursday, to reach the semifinals. Los Fresnos beat Donna North and Pace. Economedes was in a scrap with Donna High in the opening round, before getting by Brownsville Rivera to reach the final day. McAllen Rowe also pulled double duty on Thursday, topping La Feria and U-ERRE.

Grulla and Donna High will each face a team from Mexico, U-ERRE and Tamaulipas, respectively. The winners of each game will meet for the consolation title.

Sharyland runs away with win over La Joya

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

LA JOYA — Playing basketball for Sharyland High School is really fun, again.

Over the last couple years, wins have been hard to come by for the Rattlers, and enjoyment has been an even bigger rarity.

This year, though, the Rattlers are winning games, and having a blast doing it.

“When you start winning like how we are, I mean, you can’t ever be content, but it is super fun,” senior guard Maruo Fernandez said. “You get to see people smile, whenever you finish a game. People are proud of you. More people start showing up to the games.”

The Rattlers picked up another non-district win on Tuesday night, beating La Joya High 66-51.

“Winning helps out a lot,” Sharyland coach Danny Moran said. “The guys are happy. They are feeding off of each other. Practices are different. They are learning to win, and it feels good to win. They understand it, they are getting hungry, and hopefully, that carries over to the district season.”

One major change shaped the team. Junior McAllen High transfer Nazier Moore joined the Rattlers this year, and he has changed the shape of the team.

Last year, Fernandez had the ball in his hand for almost every possession. He would only come out of the game for a minute or two, before he would be subbed back in.

“It was like a weight lifted off of all of our backs,” Fernandez said. “(Moore) takes a huge weight off of everyone’s back. He knows how to distribute the ball. He knows how to get people open, he can drive and kick. He knows how to do just about everything on the court, and we are really glad to have him on the team.”

Moore is a phenomenal player in his own right. Against La Joya, Moore scored 25, including three 3-pointers. He had at least eight steals in the game. In the third quarter, he scored eight of Sharyland’s ten points.

But, Moore hasn’t just changed the game for himself.

One of the hardest things for the Rattlers over the last few years was the talk they heard. Whether it was form their stands, road stands, kids in the halls at school or even players on the court, they always heard negativity.

Fernandez got it a lot. Whatever he did was never enough.

“It kind of took a toll, because, I started doubting myself, thinking maybe we are not as good as we could be,” Fernandez said of the losing. “Having to have the ball in your hands the whole game, and playing both sides of the ball, people doubt you all the time. They say you can’t play d, not knowing how tiring it is. I understand that, and this year I am trying to step up, way more, on defense.”

So far, that has paid off, as Fernandez has become a lock down defender. While, Moore put on a steals clinic Tuesday, the entire team has a knack for diving into passing lanes, taking passing swipes on the ball-handler, and prying the ball loose.

“Our coach knows we can shoot the ball well,” junior guard Johnny Escamilla said. “So, we focus a lot on defense in practice. We run this new type of defense that he showed us last year, and we are just implementing it.”

On Tuesday, Escamilla added 12 points, and Fernandez had 13. Junior forward Santiago Rodriguez led the way for the Coyotes with 14 points.

The Coyotes have a young team, and a lot of the players are still learning to play together. However, Coyotes coach Eric Montalvo has always been known as one of the top coaches in the Valley, and his imprint is already starting to show. The Coyotes went to the locker room at halftime down 12, 38-26. Out of the half, La Joya went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to five, and force a Sharyland timeout.

“We came out a little flat,” Moran said. “I told them that they were going to come out swinging and hitting a couple threes. We are young, and we are learning.”

That was when Moore really started to take over. The steals started to pile up first.

“I got like six in a row,” Moore said. “I felt like I was on their team, because they kept giving me the ball.”

Then came the barrage of scoring for Moore. He scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half.

“After I made that layup and that three, I looked up at my dad in the stands and said, ‘my hand is hot, you have to get me some ice,’” he added with a chuckle.

The joy is infectious in the Rattlers’ locker room, but the work ethic is even more prevalent.

“Coming into the season, we knew we were going to have a lot of guys that can do different things,” Moran said. “Now that we have a full coaching staff here, we are able to work different lineups. We have our pressing group, we have our slow-down half-court group. If we have to run, we have a group to do that. We are able to mix in different guys, and use their assets to our advantage. Everybody is buying into it. It’s good to see the unselfishness on the team.”
