Weslaco High fighting for fourth seed

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

The last time Weslaco High didn’t make the playoffs was in 2005.

This year, the Panthers are fighting for the final playoff spot in District 32-6A.

The Panthers had hoped to be a little higher in the standings at this point in the season, but they have embraced their position and are happy to be in the hunt in a very tough district.

“The kids want to keep it going, they want to keep the fire burning,” Weslaco High coach Eddie Serna said. “They know what’s at stake, and they don’t want to be the team that drops the ball.”

The Panthers (9-12, 7-5) got a big win that boosted the confidence of the team on April 4. Weslaco High topped Weslaco East 11-0.

“Anytime you play the local team here, there is always a big crowd in the stands,” Serna said. “The kids were excited about that game. That was probably the first time this year that we really put a good game together, offensively, defensively and pitching.”

The Panthers got a good start from sophomore Jon Castillo, who went five innings and struck out nine.

“He kept the ball down,” Serna said. “His changeup was perfect, it had good movement, and of course his curveball is his bread and butter. He had a lot of confidence, and it helps when your team is hitting, as well.”

The Panthers hope to be able to duplicate that performance down the stretch to secure a playoff spot and keep the postseason streak alive.

BRIGHT FUTURE

Sharyland Pioneer has not had the season it envisioned coming into the year.

The Diamondbacks sit at 7-15 overall and 3-8 in district.

“Our district is tough,” Pioneer coach Wade McDaniel said. “Everybody can hit, and then most of these teams seem to have that one dominant pitcher. Noel (Vela) over at Vets, (Chezzarre) Gonzalez at Valley View, and then (Jon Michael) Roberson and (Ruben) Sepulveda over in Starr County. They all have those guys that have had success over the last few years.”

The Diamondbacks team is full of sophomores and juniors, and those younger players have picked up experience playing against top competition this year. McDaniel says that experience, combined with the growth and development the players will have over the summer, could make Pioneer a real threat next year.

One of the big reasons for optimism at Pioneer is sophomore pitcher Jacob Rosales. Rosales, who also plays quarterback on the football team, has been stellar this year. Going up against the lineups in the district has taught him how to pitch smarter, McDaniel said. Rosales’ fastball is fast enough to throw past hitters, but also accurate enough to freeze batters when he puts it low and inside.

“He will be the horse for sure next year,” McDaniel said.

This year, he has had the opportunity to learn playing beside senior Andrew Ogletree. Ogletree is the leading hitter for the Diamondbacks and, despite having his season shortened by a deep playoff run with the basketball team, he has been dominant in his four starts.

Ogletree has been the horse this year, but he has also been an example for Rosales, so that Rosales can take the role next year.

McAllen High’s Woodin commits to UTRGV

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — One of McAllen High senior libero Kellie Woodin’s fondest high school memories came with hair dyed purple and fake tattoos up and down her arms.

A standout on the volleyball court, Woodin also started performing in theater her freshman year. The role that called for the crazy attire was her favorite.

In the one-act play titled “Water by the Spoonful,” Woodin, then a junior, played a character known by the internet screen name “Orangutan.” The character was a recovering crack cocaine addict in a story about redemption.

“Our show was really deep about sobriety and finding connections with people,” Woodin said. “It had a huge message, and I loved that show. That character was super fun. I loved playing that role. It really taught me a lot, and it meant a lot to me.”

Woodin discovered theater by happenstance, but she really enjoyed it right away.

“I didn’t sign up for it,” Woodin said. “I got put in a random class as a freshman. I didn’t really know what was happening. So I got to class and Mr. (Jason) Barrera is there and he was just super fun and super awesome. I was like, ‘Wow, I want to work with that guy.’ So I decided to audition for the one-act play my freshman year, and I made it into the show.”

Barrera became a huge part of Woodin’s life, as well. She said she often turned to him when times got hard, and he was always there to encourage her. Meanwhile, she was excelling on the volleyball court, on the stage and in the classroom.

“Just like we had a regional appearance in volleyball, we also made a regional appearance in our one-act play competition,” Woodin said. “I was like jousting between club volleyball and theater. I was traveling out of state. We went to Indianapolis and Las Vegas (for volleyball), and then for the one-act play, we had to travel to Laredo, Zapata, San Antonio for the competitions. Having two ways to compete, it’s been a blessing, and I just want to thank Mr. Barrera for all the motivation he’s given me.”

Woodin said she enjoyed the way theater allowed her to express herself.

On Tuesday, Woodin made yet another memory at McAllen High, when she committed to play volleyball at UTRGV.

“It’s honestly been my biggest dream ever since I was a little girl,” Woodin said. “It means so much. I just feel like all my hard work really paid off in this moment. It felt so amazing to finally realize that the next four years of my life, I’m going to be doing what I love.”

Woodin was a part of several successful Bulldogs teams. In 2014 and 2016, Woodin’s teams made it to the regional semifinals. Woodin says she doesn’t remember much of the winning, because it helps her stay motivated to continue working hard for the next win. One of her favorite post-win celebrations happened in a middle school gym.

“My sophomore year, we couldn’t play in our gym because our gym was getting repaired. So we had to play at Morris Middle School,” Woodin said. “We beat Nikki Rowe and as soon as we did, the student section came running onto the court. They all just crowded us and we were in this giant bundle of joy. I don’t remember what happened after that, but in that moment, that was one of the best wins to me.”

In her senior year, the Bulldogs finished 43-3 and ended their season in a gym Woodin will get very familiar with over the next four years. UTRGV hosted the regional tournament and McAllen High, by virtue of its 3-0 win over Laredo United, got to play Brandeis at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

“That was incredible,” Woodin said. “Just playing in a gym of that caliber and that size was amazing. The lights, the fans and how everything was such another level, it just really gave me a taste of what it could be like playing in college, and I loved it. It’s ironic that that’s the same gym I will be in the next four years.”

Woodin wasn’t just along for the ride. This season, Woodin was named to the 30-6A All-District second team. In the regional quarterfinal win over United, Woodin had a team-high 10 digs to help the team advance. Over her career, Woodin was just as important to her team physically as she was emotionally.

“She’s very vocal,” McAllen High assistant coach Yvonne Mendoza said. “She’s constantly speaking to her teammates, and she calls out stuff. She’s able to communicate effectively and because of their bond, they are able to do well on the court as a team. Kellie is a leader in the classroom, on the court in practice, even in track. She was one of our track athletes and even on the track she was very driven. That’s the best word to describe her.”

Woodin’s drive has shown in numerous ways. She made it to regionals in volleyball and the UIL one-act play competition, and she earned a partial institutional scholarship from UTRGV.

Woodin says her work ethic is born of a rock-solid resolve to keep fighting through any adversity.

“There were times where I was in a hard practice, hard conditioning, a really hard work out on a hot day, and I was like, ‘Man, do I really, really want this? Do I want to do it for the rest of my life?’” Woodin said. “In those moments when my muscles are super tired, my body is exhausted, that’s when I realize that all of the sweat and pain and hard work will pay off if I just stick with it.

“No pain from working hard can compare to the pain of losing. I always use that to push me forward.”

This story has been updated to correctly reflect that Kellie Woodin committed to UTRGV and will be receiving a partial institutional scholarship. A previous version of this story misrepresented her signing status and financial aid package.

#RGVGolf: Lermas leading the way for Mission High girls

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

Mission High sisters senior Leah Lerma and sophomore Mia Lerma fed off the competition between each other and led the Eagles to a district title.

“Last year, Mia won the district title individually, and this year Leah got it,” Mission coach Danny Castillo said. “So you can see there is a little rivalry going on. All year long, they have been feeding off of each other.”

Leah Lerma shot a two-round 151, and Mia Lerma was two strokes behind with a 153. Mission took the district title with a score of 676, which gave it an automatic return trip to the Class 6A Region IV girls tournament on April 24-25 at The Republic golf course in San Antonio.

“It means a lot. That’s what they strive for every year, to get to the next level,” Castillo said. “That was our goal, but now our goal is to get to state. We have improved quite a bit from last year, and it’s basically the same team.”

La Joya Palmview (731) was the other team to qualify. Kathia Rivas from McAllen Rowe (189) and Alexis Gutierrez of McAllen High (194) were the individual qualifiers.

COMEBACK KIDS

After the first round of the District 30-6A boys tournament, McAllen High led with a score of 315, but McAllen Memorial was just behind at 326.

All five Mustang golfers dropped strokes off their day one scores, clinching the district title for Memorial with an overall score of 624. McHi took second and the other automatic bid to regionals with a 641. The Class 6A Region IV boys tournament is April 26-27 at The Republic golf course in San Antonio.

McAllen Memorial’s Tyler Pena (156) and Joseph Lopez from La Joya Palmview (160) were the individual qualifiers.

STEADY PACE

The Edinburg Vela boys put up eight rounds between 78-82, leading the team to the District 31-6A title.

“We are really excited,” Vela coach Cory Mayes said. “This season, we started off with some tough tournaments. But going on, we had two out of town tournaments, and the kids started working together and getting better and better. The main thing is they just stayed pretty consistent and levelheaded (in the district tournament). That’s a good thing.”

Vela freshman Ethan Galvan scored a two-round 159, putting him into a tie for first place. The tie forced a playoff between Galvan and PSJA North’s Mathew Jasso. Both hit drives of about the same length, but Galvan’s went right, into the rough. Galvan rallied to save par, but Jasso’s accuracy gave him a good look at the hole. Jasso birdied, taking the district title. In his first year in varsity golf, Galvan showed the poise on the playoff hole.

“(Galvan) is a tough kid. He has a lot of confidence, and that’s what it takes. A lot of kids want the perfect lie, but he didn’t get it, and he made the best of it,” Mayes said. “Even as a freshman. He goes up on his own (to practice) and shows up at 8 a.m., and he’ll be there until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. He’s really dedicated. Now, he’s one of the best golfers in the district.”

Vela scored 649 to earn a trip to the Class 6A Region IV tournament on April 26-27 at The Republic golf course in San Antonio. PSJA North (673) was the second-place team, earning the other team spot in regionals. PSJA High’s Jacob Flores (162) and Pablo Hernandez of Edinburg Economedes (174) were the individual qualifiers.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Edinburg North girls team received a text from coach Joey Zamora just a few hours after winning the District 31-6A title. The text read:

“I’m very proud of you girls for putting the work in and reaching your goal of winning the district championship. Now, its time to represent our district at regionals.”

Zamora wants his team squarely focused on improving its scores. Edinburg North’s 796 was good enough for first place in 31-6A, topping Edinburg High (828) by 32 strokes. But Zamora thinks that score will have to improve for North to contend with the region’s other top teams.

Albeit on a different course, Mission High won 30-6A with a score of 676, and Palmview placed second with a 731. In District 32-6A, Los Fresnos (667), Brownsville Hanna (711) and Weslaco High (722) all scored better than North.

Zamora knows his team has what it takes. Vanessa Arevala showed that on Tuesday. She shot a 50 through her first nine holes, and she was so disappointed and embarrassed that she didn’t even want to see Zamora. She shook off the bad start and proceeded to shoot a 42 on her final nine — the best she has ever shot in nine holes — to earn a third-place finish.

Kayla Quintanilla (187) from Edinburg Vela and PSJA High’s Cameran Rodriguez (195) are the two individual qualifiers from 31-6A who will compete at the Region IV tournament on April 24-25 at The Republic golf course in San Antonio.
