Sharyland High comes up short at state golf

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

Sharyland High had great expectations coming into the UIL Class 5A state tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Bastrop.

But after an inauspicious start, the team couldn’t make up enough ground in the final round. Sharyland finished sixth with a two-day score of 688. Brownsville Veterans (684) finished fifth. Grapevine won the tournament with a score of 628.

Sharyland junior Laura Rodriguez started hot, shooting a 73 in the first round. But she lost control on the second day, falling out of contention for a medal with an 81. Rodriguez finished eighth.

Junior Raquel Flores made a push on Day 2 to finish ninth overall. Flores started the tournament with an 82, but put together a final-round 74 to finish with a two-day score of 156. Mansfield Lake Ridge’s Caitlyn Lindell and Magnolia’s Halle Whitney tied for the top spot with scores of 150. Whitney prevailed in the playoff to take home first place.

Brownsville Veterans’ Julie Lucio and Vanessa Campos were the best Valley finishers, tying for 13th with a 161.

Sharyland’s Amanda Shinn Roldan shot a first-round 93 and a second-round 88 for a two-day score of 181. Carolina Cantu had a 98 on Day 1 and a 100 on Day 2 to finish with a 198. Paulina Flores turned in an opening-round 108 before closing with a 99 to finish at 207.

CC Ray sweeps Edcouch-Elsa in area round series

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

EDCOUCH — The last time the Edcouch-Elsa YellowJackets made it to the area round, none of the players on this year’s team had been born.

In 1998, the team won a district title and made it to the second round of playoffs. The program hadn’t accomplished either feat since, until this year’s team accomplished both in coach Ryan Garza’s first year.

“It’s a step in the process for the program,” Garza said. “We are rebuilding our baseball program. It had never been anything near what we accomplished this year. This team did a great job of setting the tone for the teams to come. I think we just set the tone back to baseball to be a powerhouse for the next couple of years.”

All rides must come to an end, and this historic YellowJackets’ season closed out on Saturday when Edcouch-Elsa lost Game 2, 5-0, in an area round series against Corpus Christi Ray.

E-E lost 2-1 on Friday in Game 1 in Corpus Christi.

Saturday, the crowd was loud, the team was fired up and senior pitcher Andy Rodriguez was ready to pitch a gem.

“Andy did an excellent job,” Garza said. “In that second inning, things didn’t go our way. We got a little bloop single, little ball hits off the turf and bounces over our second baseman. Andy came in and did phenomenal. We couldn’t have asked for him to do any better. He threw his heart out his last game in his senior year.”

In the second, Rodriguez walked Ray senior left fielder Alex Aitken to lead off the inning. He got two quick outs and was almost out of the woods. Then, sophomore center fielder Ronald Vasquez worked the count to 2-0 before hitting the aforementioned bloop single. Sophomore second baseman Brandon Rodriguez followed with a grounder that took a giant hop out into the outfield, scoring Aitken. Junior right fielder Russell Sigler followed a double that scored the two runners.

Ray senior pitcher Nick Loftin settled in and started mowing down batters. Loftin finished with a complete game shutout, fanning five batters while allowing five hits and a walk.

“He threw strikes. He let the defense work. He competed when he needed to,” Ray coach Orlando Ruiz said. “Overall, he did a great job.”

After the painful second inning, Rodriguez was eager to keep his team in the game. In the third, he picked it up a notch, setting the Texans down in order on 11 pitches.

“I had to come out here and do what I do,” Rodriguez said. “I just had to go at them. Coach said to go after them, and I had to.”

“Andy did awesome,” senior catcher Steve Perez said. “He went out there and threw strikes, and that’s what matters.”

The biggest problem for the ’Jackets was Loftin. They couldn’t create any offense against him, and even if they did make solid contact, the Texans defense was up for the task.

Perez was the only E-E player who found much success. His third-inning double was the YellowJackets’ only extra-base hit. He finished the game 2 for 3, but also popped out to first base during a crucial at-bat in the fifth with Rodriguez at first.

Ray added a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Edcouch-Elsa will lose seven seniors, including Perez and Rodriguez, but the remaining players have gained valuable experience from this year.

“I think this season will set the standards high for the team,” Rodriguez said. “They can come out good and strong and finish off the same way. Basically, we can overcome anything if we work for it.”

McAllen high dominates Edinburg North in Game 1

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — McAllen High junior pitcher Abanny Garcia just about beat Edinburg North by himself.

In Game 1 of a Class 6A area round series, Garcia threw a five-inning shutout and went 4 for 4 with a three-run home run. The Bulldogs won 10-0 in five innings on Friday at Ted Uhlaender field.

Garcia allowed one hit and fanned eight batters in 69 pitches. That wasn’t even Garcia at his best.

“When I first got out there, I felt a little tired,” Garcia said. “My arm was hurting a little bit. I adjusted, and I was fine.”

Whatever he was feeling, it never showed. He grabbed the ball in the top of the first and struck out the first three batters in 13 pitches.

The story of the game for Edinburg North was errors.

“We just made too many mistakes,” North coach Damian Gonzalez said. “We gave them the first six runs. They were all unearned. We just didn’t make the plays. They are a good ballclub. They hit the ball, and defensively they are awesome.”

In the first, senior Victor Valdez walked, and Garcia hit a single to move Valdez to second. Freshman Aaron Nixon struck out, but on strike three North senior catcher Saul Garza rifled the ball down to first. The throw beat courtesy runner senior Andrew Sanchez, but sophomore first baseman Marc Esquivel couldn’t corral the ball and it went off into right field. Valdez motored around the bases and made it home without a throw.

In the fourth, McAllen High sophomore Rigo Moreno hit a dribbler back to the mound. North pitcher Giancarlo Servin fielded it cleanly and turned to make the throw to second to start a double play. The player covering the bag couldn’t handle the throw, and again the ball went rolling out into the outfield. The Bulldogs had the top of the order up after that and got rolling, scoring five runs in total in the inning.

During the second and third innings, senior second baseman Luis Keola Zamora flashed the leather with two impressive plays. In the second he robbed leadoff hitter Servin of a hit with a beautiful sliding stop and a great throw from his knees that beat Servin to the base. He made a similar play to end the third inning. This time his victim was junior Joseph Muñoz.

“It definitely got us some momentum,” Zamora said. “We (the defense) have Abanny’s back. We always tell him, ‘We have your back no matter what. Just throw your game, and we’ll take care of the rest.’”

Thanks in part to that stellar leatherwork, Garcia had a great day on the mound. But he might have had an even better day at the plate, notching a hit in all four at-bats and smashing a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.

“Abanny is great,” Zamora said. “He did exceptional. There are no words to explain how great of a player he is.”

He’s so great, in fact, that he’s a tad bit predictable. In the fifth inning, as he was walking to the plate, he heard a teammate shouting from the bench.

“The bullpen catcher said, ‘Give him the pitch right there, and he’s going to hit a home run,’” Garcia said. “I didn’t think it was going to go out, but then it cleared the fence. It’s a good feeling when you hit a ball hard like that.”

With the possibility of the next two games on Edinburg North’s home field, the series is far from over.

“We have been here before,” Gonzalez said. “A few years ago, we dropped Game 1 to Nikki Rowe, and we came back and won 2 and 3 at their place. We have to get ready to go, come back tomorrow, and take care of 2, and then we have to take care of Game 3.”

Game 2 is 4 p.m. tonight at Edinburg North. If needed, Game 3 will be played 30 minutes after.

McAllen High wants to make sure Game 3 is not needed.

“We are going to be aggressive at the plate, have good pitching and good defense,” Garcia said. “We go up there with that mentality of, get one game, and we are out of there.”

McAllen Memorials Johnson signs to Arkansas-Pine Bluff

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Athletes get familiar with all different sorts of tape.

Athletic tape for wrists and ankles, Kinesio tape for nagging injuries, and tape on opposing teams to watch during scouting sessions.

The only tape McAllen Memorial senior Ebony Johnson cares about, though, is duct tape.

“I talk back sometimes, and when I’m mad I spazz out,” Johnson said. “So my grandma gave me duct tape to put it somewhere. When I get mad, I just look at it and I calm down. I decided to put it on my shoes, since she’s not there for the games, because she lives in Missouri.”

Johnson said her grandmother is a big inspiration to her.

On Friday, Johnson signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on a full scholarship at Division I Arkansas-Pine Bluff. During the ceremony, Johnson she made sure to give credit where it’s due.

“Even though she’s not here, I want to thank my grandma,” Johnson said to the crowd gathered in the library to see her sign the LOI.

Johnson’s father, David, is from Arkansas. So even though Johnson will be far from her family in the Valley, she will have family nearby.

“I always see my family there in the summer,” Johnson said. “I’m really close with my grandma and my cousins, so they are going to be a big help to ease the transition.”

Memorial coach Clarisse Arredondo gave an impassioned speech about the hard work Ebony Johnson had given for the four years they were together.

“It’s really special,” Arredondo said after the ceremony. “As a coach, your dreams are to help kids get to the next level. It’s not the coach that makes the player, it’s the hours, and the time, and the effort that the kid puts into the sport. Hard work pays off, and we are extremely proud of Ebony. Hopefully, this shows all of the other kids that if they have dreams of playing at the next level, it can happen.”

It happened for two of Arredondo’s players this week alone. Johnson signed Friday, and Victoria Izaguirre signed to play for Division III Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday. Izaguirre and Johnson have been playing together for seven years, and they have become best friends.

“Honestly, it is amazing,” Izaguirre said. “We started off in middle school and we have a give-and-go, and that’s all we had to do. In high school, we made the most of it, and we grew together. She’s like a sister to me, and it’s great to see her accomplish this.”

The two have had a close relationship on and off the court for years.

“Since middle school, we have always wished to go further in college,” Johnson said. “I’m going to be a Lion, and she is going to be a Lion. So, it’s super ironic.”

The Pine Bluff Golden Lions and the Eastern Nazarene Lions will each be getting a talented Mustang next year.

Johnson and Izaguirre are pushing each other to prepare for the jump in competition.

“I work out with her after school,” Johnson said. “We just talk, and sometimes it gets emotional because we are both moving so far away, but we’ll only be a phone call away. I think we’ll be fine.”

“Even though we have different workouts, we are doing it together,” Izaguirre added. “We are going to do it as long as we can, until we have to go our separate ways.”

Johnson may be on the precipice of her college career, but there’s another big event she’s excited for before she’s done with high school. Johnson’s grandmother will be in attendance for her graduation.

“I can’t wait,” Johnson said. “She’s just a good person, you know? And I can’t wait to see her.”

Rio Grande City beats Brownsville Veterans, advances to area round

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

RIO GRANDE CITY — Rio Grande City senior ace Nando Sepulveda was a freshman the last time the Rattlers made the playoffs. Even then, they lost in the bi-district round.

On Saturday, Rio Grande City beat Brownsville Veterans 11-1 in five innings. The win gave the Rattlers (18-8, 12-4) a 2-0 series win after they blew out the Chargers 11-1 in six innings during Game 1.

“It was tremendous,” Rio Grande City coach Roque Cortinas said. “Our pitching was lights out the whole weekend. Everything was pretty good — hitting. All-around great job.”

Sepulveda cruised in Game 1, but opponents have assumed all year that the Rattlers only have one pitcher worth worrying about.

Sophomore Osvaldo Perez proved the Rattlers have more depth in their arsenal. He went all five innings, striking out five while allowing only one run on three hits.

“He did great,” Sepulveda said. “He’s been throwing a lot of strikes. His curveball is good, his changeup has been working good. Hopefully it keeps on going, to the next round.”

“This game proves that we don’t only rely on one guy,” Perez added.

The party got started early for the Rattlers. Senior designated hitter Saul Garcia led off the second inning with a solo home run. Junior center fielder Jeremy Gorena followed with a single and came around to score to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead.

That’s when Perez started to click on the mound. He said his curveball was narrowly missing early, but in the third, he started throwing it for strikes, allowing him to find his groove and cruise to the win.

In the Rattlers’ half of the third, Sepulveda hit a double and came around to score when Juan Carlos Perez hit a double in the next at-bat.

The Rattlers put the game away in the fourth. They made a leadoff walk hurt the Chargers and kept the momentum going, scoring six runs on four hits and three walks in the inning.

“We try to have an approach every time we are up, especially with lefties at the beginning,” Cortinas said. “We were trying to pull the ball a little bit. They were throwing us away, so we started staying back, hit it up the middle and got hot. We are a close group — a lot of leadership. Everybody backs each other up. Once we get going, it’s hard to stop us.”

The Chargers (14-9, 11-3) tried to mount a rally in the fifth. Second baseman Gilbert Rodriguez and right fielder Jorge Rodriguez led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Ricky Peña then drew a walk to load the bases. Osvaldo Perez struck out leadoff hitter Aaron Recio on three pitches before center fielder Josh Alaniz followed with a hard hit up the middle. Osvaldo Perez snagged the ball and threw to the catcher to retire the lead runner, and the catcher turned and threw to first to complete the double play.

The Rattlers just needed to close out the game in the bottom of the fifth. Designated hitter Javi Garcia was up first, and he was hit by the pitch. Left fielder Jason Perez reached on an error, and third baseman Memo Chapa hit a single to drive in Javi Garcia and push the lead to 10-1. Second baseman Jose Gazca followed, and he was struck by a pitch, as well. Second baseman Javi Gonzalez delivered the walk-off single.

“It’s unbelievable,” Cortinas said. “We haven’t made the playoffs here in about three years, so all these seniors that have been here, it’s a good taste for them, and we are excited. Just making it, then being able to advance, it’s awesome. I’m happy for my boys.”

Rio Grande City will face Corpus Christi King in the area round. King defeated San Antonio Harlandale by scores of 9-1 and 12-1 to advance.

“I’m really excited,” Sepulveda said. “We are just waiting for next week, so we can kick some ass.”

Edinburg North takes Game 1 against Harlingen High

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG — Edinburg North’s Giancarlo Servin is predictable in the best way.

Edinburg North plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of Friday’s Game 1 in a Class 6A bi-district series against Harlingen High to make the score 5-1.

In the following half inning, the senior pitcher came out and started dealing. He struck out the first two Cardinals, walked a batter and then got another punch out to end the frame.

After that, Edinburg North coach Damian Gonzalez was feeling confident.

“He got going,” Gonzalez said. “That’s what I told my assistant coach. I said, ‘Hey man, we are good. He’s locked in now.’”

Servin felt like he could do no wrong in that inning. He had been struggling with his changeup early in the game, but in the top of the fifth, it was unhittable.

“I was trying to get the changeup over,” Servin said. “I was kind of gripping it too tight and throwing it straight into the dirt. I got it to work that inning and I got my curve over for a strike also. I was letting the guys work. The defense, the eight guys behind me, they did a great job.”

With the freedom to throw strikes, Servin shut the game down and the Cougars cruised to a 9-2 victory.

Servin went the distance, striking out nine, while allowing three hits, two runs and three walks.

He was also the catalyst on offense. In the first with a man on, he hit a shallow fly ball to right. Just as the ball was going to drop, the right fielder for Harlingen made a diving catch to end the inning.

In the fourth, Servin got the party going with a single. Junior Jose Salinas, senior Willy Oyervides and junior Junior Almeida all followed with singles. Almeida’s single scored Servin, and the other three eventually came around to score, as well.

“I knew we were going to score a lot of runs,” Almeida said. “We just needed a little spark to get going, and the rest would come. It was a blast. It’s what’s good about baseball. That’s what makes it fun, when you are hitting and hitting after a deficit.”

Almeida was on fire all night, going 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. His hits were not the most beautiful, but they found the right gaps in the defense, and his speed helped him reach safely.

“We joke around about it a lot,” Gonzalez said. “His swing isn’t the best. It isn’t the greatest, but he puts the ball in play and it finds a hole all the time. He does a good job of making contact with the ball, and today it found the holes. He had a tremendous night for us, and it sparked us.”

Almeida said the big night was a respite for him because he had been struggling in the last few games.

The hits from Almeida fueled the team.

“He’s been really big in big situations for us this past year,” Servin said. “He’s been getting really productive at-bats for us, and it’s big for our team.”

Sophomore leadoff batter Argelio Guajardo went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Senior catcher Saul Garza went 0 for 2 but had two walks and a run scored. Oyervides went 3 for 4 with 2 runs.

Servin’s complete game was a huge bonus for the Cougars. Gonzalez will have his full pitching arsenal at his disposal for a potential doubleheader today in Harlingen. Game 2 starts at 4 p.m., with Game 3 following 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2, if it is needed.

“Servin is a beast,” Almeida said. “He did great, like he’s done all year. With him going all seven, we save the rest of the pitchers for tomorrow. Because they didn’t pitch today and get worn out, they will be fresh.”
