Weslaco East uses big second half to eliminate PSJA High

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

PHARR — The Weslaco East defense came in to PSJA Stadium on a mission: shut down PSJA High’s passing attack.

The defense did just that, and the Wildcats (8-3) built a lead in the middle of the second quarter and never looked back. Weslaco East beat the PSJA High Bears 49-13 on Friday in a Class 6A bi-district playoff game.

“We just beat an 8-2 team, the Bears,” East coach Mike Burget said. “Lupe (Rodriguez), what a heck of a job he did turning this program around. They had almost a 3,000-yard passer. So I am really proud of my defense.”

Junior middle linebacker Freddy Cardenas was a large part of the formula for East’s defense.

“He was honorable mention all-state last year,” Burget said of Cardenas. “What a middle linebacker, and he’s only a junior. That cat plays from sideline to sideline. So I am pretty proud of that guy.”

East’s defense held PSJA junior quarterback Trey Guajardo to 14-of-29 passing for 122 yards.

“We had a weakness in our pass defense throughout the season,” Cardenas said. “Tonight, we took it as a challenge. And we stepped up and came out with the ‘W.’ We can stop the pass, we can stop the run, I say we have one of the best defenses out here.”

On the other end, East senior quarterback Richard LeFevre had a big game, rushing for 90 yards and a touchdown and passing for 119 yards and two scores, but Burget was focused on only one play after the game.

With under a minute left in the first half, LeFevre dropped to pass and looked to senior JC Vargas, but PSJA senior defensive back Gabriel Espinoza picked off the pass.

“I had a little talk with him at halftime about that interception,” Burget said. “He’s changed our whole season around. I got on him a bit at halftime, but if it wasn’t for Richard, we wouldn’t be in the position we are. He’s had a great, great season, and now he is leading this team.”

LeFevre knew he would hear about the pick, and he came out in the second half on fire to help put the game away.

“I’m always in trouble,” LeFevre said with a grin. “We came out with a different intensity in the second half. It’s his job. It’s written on his little card he has in his office. It says, ‘Gets to rip players’ butts.’ It just put a mindset in me that, ‘OK, now it’s time to go.’ And we came out and rolled.”

Guajardo started the game 4 for 4 to help lead the Bears’ opening drive into the end zone. The drive culminated in a 20-yard touchdown run for Guajardo.

Weslaco East responded with a 15-play, 75-yard drive that lasted just under eight minutes and ended with a 24-yard pass from LeFevre to senior Jaime Banuelos.

After that, Guajardo hit a wall, completing 7 of his next 18 attempts going into halftime.

It was Weslaco East’s ground game that was the difference in the first half. The Wildcats had 116 rushing yards at the half, led by LeFevre, who had 49 at the break.

Weslaco East took its first lead of the game at 7:23 of the second quarter, when Vargas got the ball on a toss around the left side. Vargas raced to the pylon and secured a 7-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats a 14-7 lead.

“It was good to see JC Vargas back,” Burget said. “We are going to build him up. I hope next week we can use him a little bit more.”

Vargas missed the previous five games with a leg injury but was suited up and able to play in limited action on Friday. He finished the evening with five carries for 38 yards and a touchdown, plus one catch for 36 yards and a score.

East used multiple players in the ground game, as seven rushers had more than 20 yards on the night.

Senior running back Freddy Gonzalez was another player who returned from an injury Friday. He broke his ankle in Week 3 against Edinburg Economedes.

“We got Freddy Gonzalez back. People didn’t realize that,” Burget said. “He ran that touchdown in, and the crowd and our players went crazy. They have a lot of love for these seniors that got hurt.”

As much as it was exciting for Vargas and Gonzalez to get back on the field, their play may have done even more for their teammates’ confidence.

“It was very big,” LeFevre said. “We are glad to have JC back and to have Freddy back. They are two key players on our team. The whole season, they were down. They kept their composure, but you could tell. To see them come back and play another down, and to see them both score, it brings back life to everyone, even the coaches.”

PSJA High finishes the season 8-3.

“What we were able to accomplish in one year, I’m very proud of them,” PSJA coach Lupe Rodriguez said. “I know we didn’t finish off the way we wanted to — lost the last three games — but its like I told them: ‘I’m proud of you guys. You made the playoffs.’ Not the way we wanted to go out. For a half, they played lights out. We had some chances. If things would have bounced a different way, perhaps we would have had a different outcome.”

The Bears have a young squad, and they will be a force to be reckoned with going forward. Trey Guajardo is a junior, Marco Guajardo is a sophomore, linebacker Jacob Sanchez is a sophomore and defensive back Andrew Liszt is a junior.

“Next year, we will be bigger, better, stronger and hopefully competing for a district championship,” Rodriguez said. “We learned a lot about our kids. As a coaching staff, we have to go back and evaluate us as coaches and everything we did this year. And it’ll be our job to come back stronger next year.”

In the end, Weslaco East earned the right to carry on to face Laredo Alexander in the area round at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Student Activity Complex in Laredo.

“PSJA is a good ball club,” Cardenas said. “They are a very high-scoring offense. Tonight, we proved that our defense is way better than they are.”

Benavides sets record as Edinburg High sent home by Los Fresnos

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

EDIBURG — Junior running back Hearlin Benavides broke the Edinburg High School record for rushing yards in a season on Thursday night.

“It means the world to me,” Benavides said. “I couldn’t have done it without my team, without my offensive line. All credit to my offensive line. I wouldn’t have done it without them.”

Benavides’ 94 yards and two touchdowns weren’t enough, as the Bobcats fell to the Los Fresnos Falcons 34-14 in a Class 6A Division I bi-district game at Richard R. Flores Stadium.

“It’s tough,” Edinburg coach J.J. Leija said. “These guys fought really hard. We went to the dressing room down three touchdowns, but we said we won’t give up. These guys played tough. That’s all I can ask.”

Benavides finished the season with 1,682 yards. The previous record, set by Orlando Montalvo in 1975, was 1,652.

“That’s amazing,” sophomore running back Erik Cano said. “It shows the kind of guys that we have on the team. That guy is a hell of a player. I’m not going to lie. He loves football.”

Benavides’ performance was one of many positives the Bobcats will take away from their playoff experience.

The Bobcats are young. Benavides, along with quarterback Matt Cruz, wide receivers Kandon Dortch and Antoine Woodard, and Cano are all underclassmen who will be playing next year. The defense is also really young, with only a few seniors.

“I think we are going to be moving up in the world,” Leija said. “We have some good kids. We played a lot of sophomores tonight. We have a lot of juniors that will be moving up. So we are looking for good things from Edinburg High School.”

Edinburg High struggled to start the game. The Bobcats twice had the ball past the Los Fresnos 40-yard line, and on both occasions they turned the ball over on downs.

Edinburg High’s woes were in the passing game. Junior Matt Cruz went 1 for 8 through the first quarter and a half before being replaced by senior Danny Shawnee.

Los Fresnos got going when senior quarterback Charles Chapa started rolling. He opened the scoring with a 40-yard pass to sophomore Nicholas Valencia. Junior Alberto Banuelos had a 6-yard touchdown run before Chapa closed out the half with an 8-yard touchdown run to give the Falcons a 19-0 halftime lead.

Early in the first half, EHS junior offensive tackle Jorge Ayala went down with an injury and did not return. Ayala’s injury played a large part in slowing down the Bobcats’ offense.

“Jorge was a big part of our line this year,” Benavides said. “Him going out hurt us. Big time.”

Edinburg High didn’t help itself with penalties, either. The Bobcats finished the game with nine infractions for 85 yards, but three false start penalties came on third-and-short situations, and the Bobcats were unable to convert on any of those drives.

“We got carried away with emotions and stuff like that,” Leija said. “That hurt us. We had that big one right before half that led to a touchdown. Then, we got carried away.”

Benavides finished the season with 17 touchdowns. His dominance opened up a lot of things for the Bobcats, including the emergence of Cano.

“Coming into the season, I was expecting not to play much,” Cano said. “I got given chances, and with him pounding it and pounding it, the defense tired out. It was possible for us to succeed.”

Cano credits Benavides with helping him. Cano came into the year as a wide receiver and had played quarterback before that, so he had to learn the running back position on the fly.

With a full offseason for Cano and another big year expected from Benavides and all of the other returners, the Bobcats are excited about next season.

“More positive things to come,” Cano said. “As a team we will be back and better. We just need to keep pushing.”

PSJA High’s Figueroa a force in Bears kicking game

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

PHARR — PSJA High senior Johnathan Figueroa remembers relaxing and watching Liga MX soccer on TV with his father as a child.

Figueroa’s favorite team is Club América, based in Mexico City.

Soccer was always king for Figueroa.

“My dad would train me a lot,” Figueroa said. “We would always focus on soccer. I was on the traveling team in McAllen with the Dynamo. My goal was to go play college soccer.”

In seventh grade, Figueroa started kicking for football, which was a move that may help secure his future. He’s proven to be a stalwart kicker for PSJA High, which hosts Weslaco East at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr in a Class 6A Division II bi-district playoff game.

“I think he has a great chance to play college football,” PSJA High coach Lupe Rodriguez, who has been around the sport since his own high school career led him to college football, said. “He’s a great athlete. If you look at him, he doesn’t look like a kicker or a punter, he looks like a DB. He has aspirations to go to the next level and kick. I feel he has a great opportunity at that. He is a smart young man — very humble. I think he will have that opportunity to go out there and kick at the next level.”

That didn’t happen overnight for Figueroa. In seventh grade, he was still focused on soccer. He didn’t have to choose, so he played both sports, but his priority had always been on the pitch.

“One of my favorite memories was scoring in soccer,” Figueroa said. “My dad was happy for me, because I scored more than one goal, and it was a good experience.”

During his sophomore year, Figueroa said he realized the potential he had in football, and he started to direct all of his attention to that. He even quit playing soccer to make sure he gave his maximum effort.

His sacrifices have already paid dividends. Figueroa was invited to Chris Sailer’s kicking camp over the summer. The national camp was held in Las Vegas, and it was a chance for high school prospects to work with college and pro kickers and coaches, all under the watchful eye of scouts.

The Chris Sailer Kicking organization releases rankings of all kicking prospects in the nation.

Figueroa ranked 64th nationally and 11th in Texas. He received a grade of 4.5 out of 5.

Figueroa said he especially enjoyed getting to work with Shane Tripucka, a punter for Texas A&M. Figueroa said Tripucka helped him with his punting.

As a junior last year, Figueroa hit 24 of 26 extra point attempts and 3 of 4 field goals. This year, the uptick in the Bears’ offense has allowed for more chances for Figueroa. He has hit 39 of 42 extra points and 13 of 15 field goals.
He also has strong range on field goals. His longest make in practice is 55 yards, and his longest in-game make is from 43 yards.

His teammates have learned to rely on his consistency.

“Jonathan is meant to do that,” junior quarterback Trey Guajardo said. “He has worked really hard, so a lot of the stuff, he’s earned it. It helps to have him on the team, because he gives us that extra boost that we need.”

“He is very crucial to our team,” senior defensive lineman Orlando Huerta said. “There are moments in the game where we don’t get the first down, and if we are on the 30 or the 40, I trust him to make the field goal and get us points. Because points are points, and it helps us with the momentum.”

Figueroa’s future is unclear, but he sees positive signs. Texas A&M-Kingsville is one of a few schools that has shown interest in Figueroa. The Chris Sailer camp has often helped connect schools in need of a kicker with top prospects, so the camp may also prove crucial in Figueroa’s next step.

For now, Figueroa is focused on finishing out his high school football season on a positive note.

“This year has been a great experience,” Figueroa said. “It’s been really fun working with the guys. It’s a great team. We have worked hard and we aren’t done yet, so we are excited.”

Edinburg North getting Zuniga back at the right time

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

In the proverbial David vs. Goliath fight that is Edinburg North against San Benito, David may have just the stone he needs for his slingshot.

Edinburg North junior quarterback Frankie Zuniga has been cleared to wear the navy and gold for the first time since Week 3.

“The kids have won back-to-back games for the first time this season,” North coach Rene Saenz said. “They are feeling good. And to have Frankie back, it’s kind of like a little bit more confidence for them. Believe it or not, Frankie is the most excited.”

How much Zuniga will be able to play is unclear. Saenz said “we will see how much action he can take,” obviously wanting to protect Zuniga’s health.

In his first three games, Zuniga was a live wire, completing 35 of 48 passes for a 77.9 completion percentage and 393 yards.

“(Junior quarterback) Max Aguilar has done a tremendous job,” Saenz said. “He’s guided us to a couple of wins, but he doesn’t bring that factor where a defense has to prep for him running it also, but Frankie does. That is kind of an added dimension. We are happy to have it. We can’t have enough dimensions to go against San Benito. They are the real deal.”

Edinburg North will face San Benito at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bobby Morrow Stadium.

“We know we are the fourth seed coming in and they are the No. 1 seed,” Saenz said. “They are ranked No. 1 in the Valley. We still have to play the game. We keep telling the kids we will take it one drive at a time and one possession at a time. Do what we know how to do. Try not to be heroes out there, as far as trying to do something extra out there, because that’s when mistakes happen. If we don’t end up on the winning side, it’s because they beat us, and not because we beat ourselves.”

One of the keys to the North offense will be the play of junior running back Cristian Flores, who rushed for more than 100 yard in all but two district games. Last week, against PSJA High, Flores had a career high 269 yards in North’s 28-10 win.

“San Benito is an all-around tough team,” Saenz said. “They have a great defense. They fly all over the place. It’s hard to get one consistent look from them, because they move a lot on the line of scrimmage and they are quick. So we are hoping that Cristian can keep up his running. Of course, we don’t expect him to go 200-plus, but we do expect for him to be the majority of the yards. A lot of that is on our O-line to make our blocks. That’s why it’s a great team sport. We didn’t just celebrate that 200-plus game with him. A lot of it was on the O-line and the receivers and everybody else doing their job. If he can have a healthy day, that means the team itself did what they were supposed to, and that’s what we are striving for.”

Rio Grande City uses balanced attack to beat Mission High

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

MISSION — Coming into a game against Rio Grande City, most teams will focus on senior forward Rodrigo Nuñez.

It is hard to blame them when the 6-foot-8, 255-pounder opens the season with 20 points, six rebounds and four blocks on opening night.

But if opponents aren’t careful, guards like junior Jaime Covarrubias will make them pay.

“He’s down there in the paint, and we are on the outside,” Covarrubias said. “If they double-team him, it’s a kick out and it’s an easy 3.”

Covarrubias proved that theory true on Tuesday night, as he helped lead the Rattlers to a 74-60 win over Mission High at Mission High School.

“It’s a good win,” first-year Rio coach Juan Aldape said. “We are still far away from what we want to accomplish, but it’s a good win. I will take 1-0 any time.”

Covarrubias finished the night with 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and his hustle on the glass caught his coach’s eye. Covarrubias had seven rebounds, often fighting through taller post players to snag the boards.

“That kid, throughout the offseason, has been something else,” Aldape said of Covarrubias. “Him and No. 2, those two guys are our workhorses. I am very happy with his performance.”

No. 2 is sophomore guard Aaron Marroquin, who finished with 13 points.

The Rattlers hit six 3s on the evening, including three from Nuñez.

“Yeah, that’s something I can do,” Nuñez said. “I have been practicing it over the summer.”

Aldape has been hesitant to give Nuñez the full green light on his perimeter shooting.

“He knows he has two 3s, and he better hit both of them,” Aldape said. “He hit two today, so he was granted that third. He missed his fourth, so he went back down to the block.”

Just when opponents think they have Rio sorted out, one of the Rattlers’ best perimeter players is crashing the glass, and possibly the best post player in the Valley is spotting up from deep.

“We have been working hard,” Covarrubias said. “Crashing the boards is really important. Offensive boards and defensive boards, as long as we keep getting the boards, pushing the ball, it means a lot. … We have also been practicing shooting 3s all offseason. We have a lot of shooters this season. And there is a lot of focus on Rodrigo, so that is where we step up.”

Mission High proved a tough foe to begin the season. The Eagles never went away and the played tough defense throughout.

“They brought it hard, and we just had to come through under pressure,” Covarrubias said. “We all did a good job, and we came through.”

At the end of the third quarter and later in the fourth, Mission High employed a full-court press that proved tough to beat.

“It was good experience because, that Laredo district is tough,” Aldape said. “Our boys have worked hard enough to be able to break that press and feed off scoring off that press.”

Sophomore guard Eddie Rivero and junior forward Louie Garcia each had 12 points to lead the way for Mission. Senior Yan Martinez added 10.
