CastaƱeda, Ovalle leading young Mercedes Tigers

SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

MERCEDES — Last February, Mercedes was ousted from the Class 5A playoffs in the bi-district round by Sharyland Pioneer with a 75-73 overtime loss.

After the game, then-sophomore Jared Castañeda looked around and realized something about his team’s future.

“The seniors were in tears, and that just kind of clicked in my head,” Castañeda said. “It hit me really hard, like, ‘Wow, they are going to be gone next year. I have to take that next step.’ Me and Caleb (Arthur, junior forward), being the returners, we didn’t know who was going to come back from last year’s group. It kind of just fell on top of us. We are trying to take that into consideration every time we play, that we are not like last year’s team. So we just have to keep playing our hardest every time.”

Mercedes coach Rick Treviño is starting two juniors and three sophomores. He only has two players back from last year’s varsity team, and neither got significant playing time. Castañeda is one of those returners.

“I didn’t play very much, but I am not very down by it,” Castañeda said. “It was a learning experience. I got to learn from Rey and Jaime and the other guys. They would teach me, and I would just learn from watching the game.”

Castañeda gravitated toward the seniors from last year’s group. Rey Rincon and Jaime Rodriguez were playmakers for Mercedes. Rodriguez has since moved on to the collegiate ranks, but he still keeps a close eye on his Tigers.

“We had a tough loss to Grulla a couple weeks ago,” Castañeda said. “(Jaime) texted me. He told me, ‘You have to take the leadership.’ He felt like I wasn’t giving enough leadership. The next day, we got to work, and that’s what kind of led into the next week, when we played against PSJA.”

The game against PSJA High is a high point in the season so far for Treviño and the Tigers.

“We had a good win against PSJA High the other day,” Treviño said “PSJA High was scoring a lot of points. They were really high flying. They beat some teams in our district in Donna North and Edcouch. We knew that would be a good test for us. Right now, that was one of our more decent wins.”

Castañeda spent countless hours going against Rincon and Rodriguez in practice last year. His commitment to getting better has shown in his play this year, as he has been one of the team’s leading scorers. The leadership aspect, however, has taken some time for him.

“(Against Rincon and Rodriguez in practice,) it was a battle every day. We were always going at it, back and forth. They wouldn’t hold back, and I wouldn’t hold back, either. We would go at it 100 percent. It was like a war out there in practice,” Castañeda said. “Taking that leadership role, it’s really new to me. It’s just like a whole new experience, and I am learning little by little. Coach is helping me out. And hopefully, by the end of the season, we will make something out of it.”

The Tigers have spent much of this season learning on the fly. Treviño said this is the most he has had to teach his team in six years. But the fruits of that labor are already showing, as Mercedes sits at 11-5. The Tigers just won the consolation championship at the tournament they co-hosted with La Feria last weekend.

Perhaps the biggest boon of the season has been the production of sophomore Jordan Ovalle. The guard has led Mercedes in points on many occasions this year. He has a knack for finding a lane to the hoop in traffic, and he can shoot the ball, as well. He and Castañeda have formed the core of the Tigers’ offense for much of the season.

“Those guys handle the ball a lot. They shoot the ball a lot,” Treviño said. “They are some of our smaller guys. They are lucky to hit 5-6, 5-7, but they move, they hustle and they know how to put it up from the 3-point line, where they are tougher.”

Castañeda’s leadership has shined the brightest in his relationship with Ovalle. The two grew up playing in the same leagues, but rarely on the same team. They had heated battles against each other at recreation centers across the Mid-Valley.

“We had some confrontation coming up, because we were so competitive,” Castañeda said. “Once we got on the same team, that translated in practice. Now it translates into the games, to see if we can top each other.”

“I have games where I am good and games where I am bad, but my team helps me through those tough games,” Ovalle said. “I feel like Jared is more of the leader on this team. Jared passes me the ball, gets me open, sets his feet and passes out. Then, I just have to hit the shot.”

Right now, Castañeda is making his teammates better. As he progresses, that skill is expected to grow, and his teammates will continue to benefit from it.

“We always had senior leadership, but we don’t have any returning seniors this year,” Treviño said. “We are looking for that leadership from our returners, Jared and Caleb. At the same time, we are telling everybody, ‘If you are a sophomore or a junior, we love that you are coming in and being active and leading by example.’ So we are looking for leadership from anybody right now. I think together as a team, we are doing OK.”

Los Fresnos dominates Weslaco High in final of Pirate Classic

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

HIDALGO — For the second year in a row, Weslaco High came up one game short of winning the Hidalgo Pirate Classic.

Last year, Weslaco lost in the title game to Houston Dickinson. Saturday, Weslaco exorcised one demon by beating Dickinson 61-59 in the semifinals, but lost to Los Fresnos in the finals.

Los Fresnos took a lopsided 67-51 victory on Saturday in a matchup of two teams from District 32-6A that will play two more times this year.

“I’m not going to lie, we didn’t want to play Weslaco,” Los Fresnos coach Marco Hinojosa said. “I hate playing a team three times. They are going to be tough to beat in district. This win really doesn’t mean anything. Did we win? Did we play well, get better? Yes. But at the end of the day, we want to win when it matters — in district.”

Last year, Los Fresnos and Weslaco High shared the district crown after the teams split the season series. This year, the trio of matchups all but guarantees an outright winner of the season series, and that team will likely be the frontrunner for the district title.

“We are two of the top teams in the Valley right now,” Weslaco High coach Gabe Valdez said. “It’s great for us to be matched up. It’s a good game for us. We have to learn from it and get better. Games like this help us get prepared for district play, and that is what it’s all about.”

One basket was scored in the first 4:13 of the game Saturday. Senior forward Derrick Cedeño grabbed a board and got a putback on the opening possession, leading to the four minutes of scoreless play.

“I think both of us were trying to feel each other out,” Valdez said. “We were trying to figure out what was going to be the best way to attack each other. Two great squads.”

Los Fresnos righted the ship first, using transition baskets to build a 10-4 lead about two minutes after the team’s first basket.
Senior Jordan Urbina had a game-high 27 points to lead Los Fresnos. Also in double figures were senior guard Gabe Martinez (12) and senior forward Tomas Rangel (10).

“I thought we defended really well,” Hinojosa said. “The kids know that the offense will take care of itself. We just have to defend. We brought a lot of energy, a lot of focus and we ran the game plan to a T, I thought.”

Weslaco threatened to get back into the game at the start of the third.

“We just became more aggressive,” senior guard Braxton Bloomquist, who finished with 12 points, said. “We knew we were down, and we had nothing to lose, so we brought that aggression. We were just trying as hard as we could to get a board and start the run.”

Weslaco cut the lead to 8 points for the first time since the first quarter, but Martinez and Urbina got back-to-back baskets to quiet the Panthers and put the game out of reach.

Valdez played his starters until the end. Senior Jesus Payes finished with 12 points. Junior Safi Fino-A-LaSelf scored 10.

“It’s a good experience,” Valdez said. “We played a lot of really good teams up in the San Antonio tournament, and then we played a tough Los Fresnos team today. We have gained some great experience. We are playing well, we just ran into a buzz saw in the first quarter, and it hurt us.”

Sanchez drops triple-double to lead McAllen Memorial to victory against Sharyland High

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

MISSION — Senior forward Josh Sanchez had a triple double to lead McAllen Memorial to a win on Friday.

Sanchez racked up 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Mustangs (11-3) went on the road to face Sharyland High in non-district action. Memorial won 77-38.

“Non-district games are very important,” Sanchez said. “Especially for us, because we have a lot of football players joining the team. It’s about getting them up to speed. It helps us put ourselves on a realistic scale of where we are when it comes to other teams in the Valley.”

Junior forward Sean Skaugen tied a team-high with 16 points against the Rattlers to provide a huge contribution off the bench.

In football, Skaugen played quarterback, and Sanchez played tight end.

“I used to throw him balls,” Skaugen said. “He was dishing the ball to me a lot tonight. It was kind of reversed. I kind of felt like I was in his place from the football season. He was throwing me the ball. It was good. It was funny.”

Sanchez and senior Ace Chavez joined the basketball team once football season completed. Skaugen, too, has only played in six of the basketball teams’ 14 games due to the football team’s area playoff appearance.

“He played for me last year,” Memorial coach Sam Cortez said. “He was on JV, then he suffered a little injury and was forced to stay out. All summer, he was there in open gym. He brings a big presence. He’s such a great athlete. I put him in there, and he is a game changer. He still doesn’t know all the plays, but when he gets them down, he is going to be good. He compliments Josh very well inside.”

“I feel like I am picking it up well,” Skaugen said. “It has only been like two weeks of practice. The first day, coach Cortez was just kind of throwing all the plays at me, and I was like, ‘Woah, what is this?’ But I have really been trying to learn, and I feel like I have picked up most of the plays. I think I have picked it up very well.”

Sanchez has been trying to help Skaugen. Sanchez has much more experience with the game and the team. He has been playing for Memorial for four years, and he is a team captain.

“(Skaugen) is a big part of our team,” Sanchez said. “He’s helping us a lot inside. He is very strong inside. … I know the coach real well. I know what he wants. I know what he expects from the other kids on the team. The stuff he doesn’t say, I will say it on the court.”

Skaugen is just one of many players on the team who have been helped by Sanchez. On Friday night alone, Sanchez was getting all of his teammates involved with his assists and spacing.

“Josh looks to get everybody involved,” Cortez said. “Josh learned that from his brother. I told him. This reminds me of when your brother was here. When Sean is here, it is like when Jonathan and Josh were together.”

Jonathan Sanchez was a four-year varsity player who graduated in 2016. He and Josh were teammates at Memorial from 2014-16.

The emergence of Skaugen, combined with several other players, has allowed Cortez to mix and match and get a little more depth.

“I don’t shy away from using those guys who have been with me before, because they know the system,” Cortez said. “I want to be able to go 10 deep. Big (Brett) Baus, he started earlier in the season, and he was great. He got a little tired, and we had to rest him. I don’t have to worry, because everyone on this team is ready to play. It’s just about making sure they know how to get the job done when they get out there.”

With Josh Sanchez, a coach gets the best of both worlds. He is a very talented player who can take over a game, but he is also the type of player who makes the players around him better.

“Josh is a great captain,” Skaugen said. “He knows a lot about the game. If you are in the wrong spot, or if you run the play wrong, he will come and tell you that you need to do this or do that. He’s really smart, and he knows all five spots on the floor. So he is a great leader.”

Hidalgo surges late to beat Valley View

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR
PHARR — Hidalgo’s magisterial mix of veteran leadership and youthful athleticism allowed the Pirates to pull away late on Tuesday.
The Pirates bested the rival Valley View Tigers in a non-district matchup at Valley View High School 57-40 to gain some momentum ahead of the sixth annual Hidalgo Pirate Classic tournament, which they will host beginning Thursday.
“It does build some momentum,” Hidalgo coach Gus Sanchez said. “We have played some tough teams in the last few games. Being a rivalry game against Valley View, I think this does build momentum heading into the tough tournament that we are hosting.”
The score looked one-sided, but that was thanks to Hidalgo’s late push. Valley View even had a 33-32 lead with 1:37 left in the third quarter. Hidalgo senior Aaron Anaya scored six points in the fourth quarter to help the Pirates seal the game.
“Aaron has been doing this for the last couple years,” Sanchez said. “It’s his turn now. He made some big free throws there and some big shots for us. He kept our poise. We got a good combination of some older guys and some young guys. He’s the one that keeps our team in check.”
Anaya knows all too well how crucial this rivalry game can be.
“I was part of the team the one time in my career that we lost to them, so it feels good my senior year coming into their house and taking the ‘W,” Anaya, who had a game-high 16 points, said. “I have been struggling this year, to get to the basket. Now that I am starting to find my rhythm, it feels good, and I am able to get my teammates more involved.”
The teams went back and forth during the first half, but Hidalgo had the slight advantage early.
The Pirates couldn’t find their rhythm from deep, missing several open shots in the first half.
“That was big,” Anaya said. “We rely on our shot, so we had to take it to the hoop more often, and that’s what worked for us tonight.”
Valley View’s Achilles’ heel, meanwhile, was free-throw shooting. The Tigers went 4 of 13 from the charity stripe in the first half.
The heated rivalry was scrappy early, as each team had accumulated 10 fouls by halftime. That led to several key players for both teams being in foul trouble.
Add to that the early injury of Valley View senior Ricky Rodriguez, who landed awkwardly after a shot attempt early in the first quarter and did not return, and both teams needed to go deep into their benches.
Hidalgo has gone 12 deep for much of the early season, allowing Sanchez to make five-man substitutions and then adjust based on the personnel on the court and the opponents’ lineup.
“We are counting on 12 guys,” Sanchez said. “That’s one thing that we are focusing on. If we want to make a deep playoff run, that depth is going to be big this season.”
Saul Arjona was second on the team with 10 points, followed closely by Andy Flores with nine and Alexis Gonzalez with eight.
“This win carries a lot of momentum,” Arjona said. “We got a big win tonight, and that gets us pumped for the tournament.”
Felipe Ayala, one of two seniors for Valley View, had to rise to the occasion with Rodriguez hurt. He did to the tune of a team-high 13 points, but the next highest scorer on the team had six points.
Carlos Zuniga, Hidalgo’s starting post player, was one of the players in foul trouble. His absence from the court was a major obstacle for Hidalgo. Valley View junior Andres Sepulveda found a rhythm with Zuniga out and collected all six of his points in the third quarter.
“Our kids dug deep,” Sanchez said. “Our fundamentals kicked in in the second half. That’s our goal, is just to get better. I know it’s a rivalry game, but we want to get better every time, and that’s what our kids did tonight.”
Now, the Pirates look ahead to the Pirate Classic.
“We are really excited for the tournament,” Anaya said. “We have been working hard, and our goal is to win the championship. We have two big games to begin the tournament. We are just going to hit it hard.”
