Sekinger leads Edinburg Vela to huge win over Edinburg High

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

EDINBURG — Edinburg Vela senior Trey Chavana remembers when junior center Noah Sekinger was a freshman.

“He could barely dribble the ball,” Chavana said of Sekinger.

Sekinger has developed into a player who on Friday night dominated in a 55-42 win for Vela over Edinburg High on the Bobcats’ home floor.

“This one felt really good,” Sekinger said. “I think we all knew going into the game. We were really confident. We just felt the difference. Something in the air felt different tonight. We knew what we had to do to come out with this win, and everybody executed.”

Sekinger was matched up with one of the best big men in the Valley: Edinburg High senior Jesus Cantu. Cantu came into the game closing in on averaging a double-double, with 12.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Sekinger brought slightly more scoring (14.4) and just a hair less rebounding (8.9).

“It’s usually a good battle every time Jesus and I go at it,” Sekinger said after their third career meeting. “They were letting us play a lot. So, there were a couple in there where he fouled me, but no matter how many times you get blocked, you have to keep going up strong every time. You can’t shy away from the challenge, because the moment you do is when someone else comes and gets you.”

The battle was as intense as promised.

Sekinger had 10 points on the night, and Cantu netted 9. The two played to nearly a push on offense, they were about even on the rebounding front, and they were level on defense. Both players effectively protected the rim, whether it was with thunderous blocks or altering shots just enough to get offensive players off balance.

Sekinger found the difference-maker during the second quarter.

“I knew once I started getting it in the post more, they were either going to foul me or double down, which they were doing a lot of,” Sekinger said. “So I was like, ‘I think it’s time to start getting my teammates open. If I can give up a bad shot for a great shot somewhere else — perfect, that’s what we want.”

When the first quarter ended, EHS was up 13-10. Sekinger saw his shooters were open thanks to sagging defenders, and he was able to deliver several precision passes out to the perimeter. During the second quarter alone, junior guard Bobby Espericueta had two 3s and Chavana added a third.

“Those passes were amazing,” Espericueta said. “Jesus was playing good defense on him, and he’s a bigger guy. But, Noah did a great job finding his teammates.”

Vela gained the lead, heading into the locker room for halftime up 25-23.

“We saw that some of the things defensively were working in the first half. We just needed to clean up a few things, so that they would be more effective,” Vela coach David Keith said. “We made a few adjustments on personnel, depending on where we were at. We just did what any coach would do at halftime: make an adjustment, and the guys were able to understand what we were doing, come out and execute on the floor.”

The second half opened up even more passing lanes for Sekinger and the rest of the SaberCats. They used their ball movement and quick passing to unleash a barrage of 3-pointers.

“Oh yeah, man, we hit some big shots in the second half. That kind of opened it up for us,” Keith said. “We started hustling a little more, getting rebounds to try to get some possessions.”

In all, the SaberCats hit 10 shots from beyond the arc, compared to just two for the Bobcats — one in each half from junior forward Antoine Woodard, who finished with 20 points.

Woodard gave his all trying to will the Bobcats back into the game. He even suffered a cut on his chin, which forced him to switch his jersey. During the fourth quarter, Woodard scored eight of the Bobcats’ 10 points, but his three misses from the free-throw line hurt, and the lack of scoring from anyone else was the killing blow.

“He’s a heck of a ball player,” Keith said. “He’s extremely athletic, and that left-right hand switch is sneaky stuff. He’s a good player.”

Chavana finished with five points, and his defense on Woodard helped the SaberCats hold the lead down the stretch.

“We just believe in our senior Trey,” Espericueta said. “He is experienced, and he has a big enough body to compete with (Woodard). He did his job.”

Vela gained a lot of confidence with the win. The team started slow but has been heating up through the district season.

Junior guard Josh Diaz scored 13 points for Vela, guard Nate Gomez hit a pair of 3s, and guard Austin Garza had five points before he fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

“It feels great. It feels amazing,” Espericueta said. “They are a really highly ranked team, and they were rolling through the district undefeated. Just coming in with a better team and more confidence, everybody played their game, and we got the win. … From where we started off, losing to Econ, (to now be tied for first in the district), that’s amazing.”

Sekinger’s 10 points mark the most he has scored against Edinburg High in his career. He has come a long way from the first time Chavana saw him attempt to dribble.

“(Sekinger) was able to really read and look for the open guy,” Keith said of Sekinger’s game Friday. “We were able to get some 3s from the inside out, which is a work in progress still, but he is getting better at it.”

Rowe shaking off early growing pains, fighting for district crown

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

The McAllen Rowe Warriors have a lot of youth on the 2018 team.

The Warriors (18-8, 5-0 in District 30-6A) start one freshman and two sophomores.

But the freshman who is starting is not just any freshman — Jose Luis Yebra is the son of the team’s coach, Jose Luis Yebra.

That dynamic created some early growing pains as the Warriors battled through a tough non-district slate.

“We both had to find an adjustment at the beginning of the season, because it’s a little bit hard. He thinks, ‘Dad is telling me to do this,’” the older Yebra said. “He doesn’t think of it as me being his coach. He thinks of it as, ‘Dad is telling me to do this or do that.’ Sometimes when they are your own son, they think they know it already. … He was having a hard time that dad was trying to coach him and tell him what to do. So he was being a little stubborn here and there, but I think he has finally found and understood that he has to do what we are asking him to do as coaches. I think he has made that adjustment, and he is focusing now. I think that is one of the reasons that his improvement has been showing of late.”

The Warriors faced playoff-caliber teams throughout the non-district season. Rowe lost to Los Fresnos, San Antonio Wagner, San Antonio Roosevelt, Edinburg Vela, Edinburg North and Edinburg Economedes. Not only was the younger Yebra learning the varsity game, but senior point guard Adrian Bernal came in from football nursing a shoulder injury that caused him to miss time during the football season.

“Adrian has been a four-year starter for me,” coach Yebra said. “He still has an injury on his shoulder. It bothers him here and there, but he has been helping the team, especially when we need him the most. He seems to find a way to step up and play better when we need him. He has been doing that for four years now. We seem to think that when the pressure is on, he finds a way to give us that lift that we need, to overcome adversity.”

Sophomore guard Derek Luna was named The Monitor’s All-Area Newcomer of The Year in 2017, and he is averaging 22.5 points, 7 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 3 steals per game as a sophomore.

“Derek is being Derek. He is having a tremendous year,” coach Yebra said. “He had a great year last year, and I think he has picked up right where he left off. Every game is hard for him, because now everybody knows his capability, so the defenses are set up to make sure they stop him. And still, he has been our scoring leader.”

The younger Yebra is leading the team with 10 rebounds per game, and sophomore Darrin Everage is adding 9.3 rebounds per game, creating a huge rebounding advantage night after night for the Warriors.

“They are both competing for the lead in rebounding,” coach Yebra said. “Jose has been very helpful on the rebounding area, and so has Darrin. Darrin and Jose have done most of the work, but let’s not forget about Derek. He is a big guard who goes in there and gets a lot of rebounds. He’s been helping there, too. So, all three of those guys have done a tremendous job rebounding.”

At 5-0 in 30-6A, the Warriors are in pole position for the title race, but coach Yebra knows nothing is guaranteed.

The Warriors’ next test is at 7:30 tonight against McAllen Memorial (19-7, 4-1).

“Our goal is to win the district title,” coach Yebra said. “We were fortunate enough to go over there to McHi and pull out the win. But, the season is so long, and we have so many games to go. I think anyone is capable of beating anybody. But, nevertheless, I see ourselves as a team that can compete for the district title. We like to think that because we are still in first place, we want to say that we can continue to do that. Now, it’s easier said than done, so we have to prepare for Memorial and whoever is next after that.”

Edcouch-Elsa buzzing under coach Lalo Rios

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

The Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets have won two of their last three games and have found their form.

E-E coach Lalo Rios was hired on April 10 and immediately got to work implementing his system.

“It was an adjustment for the boys to get used to us, and us getting used to the boys,” Rios said. “But, I think as the games have gone on, we are starting to figure it out as a team: what the expectations are and who we are trying to be. So, we are playing a lot better now.”

The Yellow Jackets are 11-15 overall and 4-2 in District 32-5A.

“The district is tough. On any given night, these teams can beat each other up,” Rios said. “We are just glad we are still in the mix. Going into every game, you never know who is going to have the upper hand. Everybody has to be ready to play.”

That philosophy is borne out by the numbers. The Yellow Jackets currently have eight players averaging more than three points per game, and all of those players have played in more than 20 games this year.

“The beauty of it is, I think it’s been a different guy almost every night,” Rios said. “That’s something we are proud of. We are not a one-man team. We have guys that can step up on any given night.”

Senior guard Joseph Gonzalez is the team’s leading scorer with 12.7 points per game, but senior forward Jeremiah Caballero is right behind at 11 points per game.

Rios’s five-in, five-out system allows his team to run and defend with all of its energy. Rios’s teams have been shooting 3s long before the wave of 3-point shooting that is currently engulfing Valley basketball.

“If you look at the NBA and college, you can see times are changing to more of a guard-heavy system, more guard dominant,” Rios said. “I think we are seeing it also at every level — the high school level. If you have little bit more guards, I think it does help a little bit, because everybody is launching 3s now. It does help if you have good shooters. But at the end of the day, you are always going to need a big man, or a couple of bigs that can help you get rebounds and get those easy points inside the paint.”

Rios’s ability to adapt to the game while still staying true to his core beliefs puts his team in a position to succeed.

Combine that with Rios’ ability to gain the trust of a whole new crop of players, and his ability to form bonds with those players, and it’s easy to see why no one is counting out Edcouch-Elsa this year.

“My job as a coach is to build a bond with every kid that we have come through our program,” Rios said. “Some kids have taken a little bit longer, and some kids — right away — we have developed that good bond. But at the end of the day, we have come to know these kids, and they have really come to know us. We have bought into them and they have bought into us. So now we are really excited about what the future holds for us.”

Edinburg North grad Saul Garza commits to LSU

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

Former Edinburg North catcher Saul Garza announced Tuesday night on Twitter that he is committing to Louisiana State University.

“It’s a good school and a great program,” Garza said. “I am lucky to — one day — be a part of it.”

Garza will play this year at Howard Junior College, where he has been getting prepared for the upcoming season.

“(The LSU coaches) have been in contact with me and they showed that they had interest,” Garza said. “They talked to my family about it. I felt like they were genuine. What they had to offer was the program itself — LSU baseball. Getting to meet coach (Paul) Mainieri and his family, and the rest of the coaching staff and the program they have built over the past few years. … That’s why I decided that’s where I wanted to be.”

Garza considered starting his professional career last year, but after he wasn’t taken on the first day of the 2017 MLB Draft, Garza knew he would enroll with Howard.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Garza, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder, with the 19th pick in the 31st round, even knowing he was unlikely to sign a contract.

During his senior season at Edinburg North in 2017, Garza hit .530 with 33 RBIs, 10 doubles, eight triples and three home runs to earn The Monitor’s 2017 All-Area Offensive Player of the Year award.

Garza said the moment he announced his decision was one he had visualized for years.

“It felt amazing. It was a huge relief,” Garza said. “Coming out of high school, I decided to go the JUCO route. It’s great knowing it paid off, and I am able to — next year —attend a great university such as LSU. … This year here at Howard I just got back to Big Spring, and I am to ready get after it with the guys. We have extremely high hopes for this year.”

Trey Chavana faces big test against Edinburg North

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

EDINBURG — Any time Edinburg Vela senior guard Trey Chavana faces Edinburg North, the game has an added meaning that motivates him.

His cousin Noah Chavana is a guard for Edinburg North but was injured early in the season and is out for the rest of the year.

“That’s my dad’s alma mater, and my grandpa works there,” Trey Chavana said. “He’s real big time in Edinburg North. He always told me to go to Edinburg North. So, I guess it’s kind of like, I can show him this is where I belong.”

Edinburg Vela (12-13, 4-1 in District 31-6A) will host Edinburg North (17-10, 4-1) at 6 p.m. today.

Trey Chavana has faced North before, but this time is different, because he is finally starting and able to show his full potential. For years he worked to earn a spot on varsity, and last year was supposed to be the year he broke through. But, things didn’t work out quite like he intended.

“I was part of the team, and then I quit, because I felt like I was being treated unfairly by the coach,” Trey Chavana said. “It took a big emotional toll on me mentally and physically. It was tough.”

After he stepped away from basketball, Trey Chavana wasn’t sure what he was going to do.

“I had thoughts about leaving,” he admitted. “I was considering going to North to play with (his cousin Noah Chavana) or to McAllen Rowe, because my grandmother lives there. I was considering both options, but ultimately I decided to stay and focus on my academics.”

Trey Chavana said the hiring of coach David Keith really helped him, adding that Keith was a big factor in his decision to stay.

“He’s probably one of the best coaches I have worked with, other than (Rick) Treviño in Mercedes,” Trey Chavana said. “Coach Keith has treated me awesome. He’s been fair and upfront about everything. No lies or anything. It’s been really good.”

More than ease or comfort, what Trey Chavana really wanted was a coach who recognized his talent and allowed him to flourish on the court.

“He has kind of surfaced as our primary ballhandler,” Keith said. “It didn’t start out that way. It’s been an interesting discovery year for these kids, finding new roles. Trey had done it in the past. You could tell he had some skills. He’s really come into his comfort zone with it, I think. It’s fun to watch him get better.”

What separates Trey Chavana from other players on the court is his vision and ability to pick out the open man in any situation.

“I started realizing I had that when I started to play with the South Texas Hoopsters in sixth grade,” he said. “They put me at point guard, because I had real good vision, even when I was younger, but it was just raw talent, and I had to work hard to progress over the years.”

Vela junior Noah Sekinger has been playing with Trey Chavana since his freshman year. The two have watched each other mature and grow. As Trey Chavana described it, “we have been on a long journey together, but it has definitely been a good one.”

“Trey is a good guy,” Sekinger said. “He’s a real good passer, and he has a real good feel for the game. I like playing with him, because he makes things a lot easier. He will look for me in transition. Especially in the zone, he’ll look for me a lot. And then once people start doubling down on me, it gives him an opportunity to get shots open and for him to find everyone else. He has a real good vision for the ball and likes seeing where everyone else is going to be.”

This week is tough for the SaberCats. After they face off with North, they will face Edinburg High (22-6, 5-0), which leads the district, on Friday.

“Edinburg has its own brand of basketball,” Keith, who previously coached at Sharyland High, said. “You have to be ready to play every night. You can’t underestimate anybody. There is a lot of emotion when it’s Edinburg-Edinburg. We didn’t have that at Sharyland. We never saw that, because Pioneer was pretty new. Seeing the emotions pop up, we have had to learn how to settle the kids down. They get so amped up and excited.”

Vela suffered its first district defeat on Friday at the hands of Edinburg Economedes, while North is coming off a win over PSJA High. And for Trey Chavana, the extra bit of motivation for Tuesday’s game is going to fuel him through the week and on to the second round of district play.

“This week is pretty important to improve our ranking and standing within the district,” he said. “We want to have bragging rights in Edinburg. … It gets pretty physical in the Edinburg rivalry games. There is a lot of emotion to it. You can tell. There is a lot of tempers flaring. It is fun to play in.”

Versatile Payes key for Weslaco High, but not enough against Los Fresnos

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | THE MONITOR

WESLACO — With Weslaco High down nine points late in the first quarter, senior forward Jesus Payes made a jumper that helped turn the tide.

The Panthers rallied back and grabbed a lead before halftime, but the Los Fresnos Falcons would not be silenced. With six seconds left in the first half, Falcons senior guard Jordan Urbina hit a floater in the lane that gave Los Fresnos the lead for good in a 54-43 win at Weslaco High School on Friday.

“I think we gave a great effort. They came out and punched us in the mouth, but we responded well,” Payes said. “I just think we couldn’t put the ball in the hole anymore in the second half, and that cost us.”

Payes finished the game with seven points, but his effect on the game is more than what shows up in the box score.

As one of five seniors on the roster, Payes isn’t necessarily the team’s main leader, but he showed his veteran presence on Friday.

Los Fresnos got off to a hot start. As Weslaco High coach Gabe Valdez put it, “If it was a boxing match, they had us on the ropes in the first round.”

The Falcons lead, at its largest, was 15-2 in the first quarter. But Valdez played with his lineup until he found the right combination of players to stop the bleeding. The unit that worked best for Valdez on Friday was Payes along with three other starters: senior guard Braxton Bloomquist, senior guard Matthew Olmeda and senior forward Khalil Fino-A-LaSelf. Instead of the fifth starter, senior center Derek Cedeno, Valdez opted for his sixth-man, junior guard Safi Fino-A-LaSelf.

“We can throw different lineups on the floor, but that group being a little taller, longer, but also having that speed, it helped us a little bit, because we could extend,” Valdez said.

That unit remained on the floor for almost all of the second quarter as the Panthers clawed their way back into the game.

Payes was vital to everything that happened during that stretch. His ability to play the five in Weslaco’s small-ball unit gives the Panthers offense from all five spots while still maintaining their rebounding and rim defense.

“When I go to the five, it’s usually a quicker lineup,” Payes said. “We are able to go on a lot more runs.”

Payes also brought clutch scoring when no one else seemed to be able to find the bottom of the net.

He said he had one goal in mind after the Panthers’ playoff run ended last year, and that was to improve his 3-point shot.

“I think basketball is evolving,” Payes said. “It’s changing, and shooting is becoming a lot bigger. … I focused on my 3-point shot this summer, and it has improved a lot.”

Payes didn’t train with fancy clinics or shooting coaches in an effort to rework his jumper. He says the key was just putting in the work and getting the reps.

“Just keep shooting, no matter what,” Payes said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s in the gym, at the park or in the backyard. It’s just about putting the shots up.”

Midway through Friday’s second quarter, Weslaco was within seven points when Payes got the ball on the left side and saw his moment. He sized up a shot from 3 and hit it. The Falcons immediately called a timeout, having watched their huge lead nearly vanish.

Payes said he feels comfortable shooting from 3, but he said he has to be smart about when to shoot versus when to look for the open man.
The Falcons pulled away early in the second half and never really looked back.

Friday marks Weslaco High’s second loss to Los Fresnos this year.

The Panthers are 18-7 overall but have fallen to 2-3 in a tough District 32-6A. Valdez said his team is ready to bounce back like it always has, but Olmeda has noticed a different intensity from opponents this year following the team’s run to the regional semifinals in 2017.

“Teams are coming out to beat us,” Olmeda said. “This year, we have a bigger bull’s-eye on our back because of how far we went in the playoffs last year.”

The Panthers are confident they are still the king of the hill.

“I think we (Los Fresnos and Weslaco) are the best two teams in the Valley,” Payes said. “I think our two losses before this don’t define us.”

When crunch time comes this year for the Panthers, the lineups may be the same, or they may be tweaked. One thing is for certain: Payes will have a big role.

“He has grown up a lot,” Valdez said. “Coming off last year’s season and him being a big key for our team, coming off the bench. Now, he is a starter. He plays a big role.”
