Rubio sinks buzzer-beating putback to snap Sharyland High’s losing streak

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

ALAMO — Sharyland High senior center Andres Rubio was not in the starting lineup against a small and quick PSJA Memorial team Friday night.

“This might have been the first time all season he didn’t start,” Sharyland coach Danny Moran said. “I think that fueled him a little bit to come off the bench, and he wanted the ball when he came in the game. That is what we wanted from him.”

“It always lights a fire in me,” Rubio said of not starting. “I’m not down, because I have a lot of confidence in my teammates, but when I came off the bench, I was like ‘I will do whatever I can to help the team win.’”

Rubio was, however, on the court with the Rattlers down one and less than 10 seconds left.

After a timeout, junior guard Naz Moore made the pass to start the play, and then came in for a screen from Rubio. Rubio also screened for senior guard Mauro Fernandez, so all eyes were on the Rattlers’ two star guards.

But, Rubio kept the ball, and the lane parted like the red sea, as the big man rumbled toward the rim.

“I knew (the first shot was a miss) because the guy was coming in from the other side,” Rubio said. “I was like ‘he is coming full-fledged to try to block this. So I have to do something to avoid it.’ I ended up missing.”

The clock was down to less than three seconds after the miss. Fernandez was on the low block, so he boxed out his man, allowing Rubio to grab his own miss and put it back up. Rubio said he knew the basket was good once he put it up. And as it went through the cylinder, the buzzer sounded.

“It felt amazing,” Rubio said. “I am just proud to be a part of Sharyland.”

Sharyland High beat PSJA Memorial 44-43 in District 31-5A action, snapping the Rattlers’ six-game losing streak and giving them their first district win.

“I just jumped up on (Rubio),” Moore said. “We have been losing, so we just wanted to come out and shake that off, and just get it done.”

The Wolverines took the lead early, and Rattlers’ fans were worried about another slow start, which has haunted them all year. Sharyland’s well-timed timeout allowed the team to regroup early.

“In the timeout, we were like we need to refocus,” Moore said. “We didn’t want it to go the same way again. I just told the guys, we need this.”

The lead see-sawed back and forth as both teams played scrappy and fast, if a bit sloppy.

PSJA Memorial came into the game with a lot of emotion after losing a classmate yesterday. Fans wore shirts to remember the teen who was fatally shot on Thursday.

The Rattlers’ emotion stemmed from their frustration at their play on the court over the past few games, and the emotion from both sides spilled onto the court. Hard fouls and heavy steal attempts led to a slower second half, with plenty of trips to the line.

The emotion affected the crowd as well, as both sides lived and died with each call, shot and dribble.

Memorial led for the majority of the first half, but a late surge led by Sharyland senior Isai Heredia allowed the Rattlers to take a six-point lead into the break.

Memorial was able to tie the ballgame in the fourth, and even take a lead for short astretches.

Rubio’s heroics were the highlight of his night, but the sharp-shooting center was effective throughout the game, creating mismatches with the smaller Wolverines.

“The way he can shoot, play defense and score in the low post, he is unguardable,” Fernandez said. “There may be five centers in the Valley that can guard him, and only one in our district.”

Memorial countered by going even smaller and forcing Rubio to run and close out on the perimeter. Rubio was off the court for much of the fourth, but he was brought back in for the final play.

After Rubio hit the winner, his teammates rushed the court and mobbed him.

Moore scored 11 for the Rattlers. Shooters Johnny Escamilla and Fernandez both had off nights as Escamilla scored three, and Fernandez scored two, but both were still pivotal to the win with what they bring beyond scoring. And the MVP of the night, Rubio, finished with a team-high 15.

Michael Munoz led the way for the Wolverines with 12, and John Martinez added eight.

One win doesn’t erase all the problems the Rattlers have had this year, but they are hoping the confidence and excitement from Friday’s win will carry over into the next few weeks, and even the second half of the district season.

“Defensively we have to get better,” Moran said. “We know we can score. We just have to execute offensively, and then rebounding is big. We haven’t won the rebounding margin all year, and I feel like today, we did.”

Moore echoed those sentiments

“We just have to keep winning, every game is a playoff game from here on out,” Moore said. “We are going to be a problem in the second half of district.”

Hidalgo keeps getting better, even after undefeated start to the district season

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

HIDALGO — Almost every year, Hidalgo loses a talented class of seniors, but the key to the Pirates’ sustained excellence has been their ability to overcome those losses, and keep moving forward.

In 2018, Frankie Sanchez and Aaron Anaya graduated, leaving a big hole for the Pirates to fill.

In response, coach Gus Sanchez inserted two bench players into this year’s starting lineup, seniors Luis Toledano and Alexis Gonzalez. Adding those two, to the extremely talented core of senior Andy Flores, sophomore Gus Sanchez and senior Saul Arjona has been a perfect fit.

“Alexis, he is very big on defense, especially because he can guard anything,” the younger Sanchez said. “We can make any switch with him, because he can guard guards and bigs. That is a big help to us. And when he is with Saul, who can also guard bigs and smalls, it makes it very tough for our opponents.”

The versatile front line of Gonzalez and Arjona has been a nightmare for teams of all shapes and sizes. Gonzalez can guard low post bigs with unrelenting defensive pressure. And as Sanchez described, either big can make the switch onto perimeter players.

Toledano benefited greatly from a summer season, which allowed him to play with the starters and find his game.

“In the summer, when we started playing with our travel team, I just started to improve a lot,” Toledano said, adding shooting was a big part of his improvement. “Coach wanted us to be in the starting five, so we had to do everything perfectly to get that opportunity. I worked on my shot a lot.”

“Everyone in our starting five can shoot the 3,” the younger Sanchez said. “That makes us more deadly, because we can spread the floor, or we can go big with Kyle coming in.”

Sophomore Kyle Perales is still learning how to dominate from the low post, but his post defense and high energy has been a boon for the Pirates, especially against bigger teams.

“He’s a sophomore with a 6-foot-2 frame,” coach Sanchez said. “Anytime we play a bigger team, he along with Moises Longoria, come in to give us a lot of size and depth coming off the bench. (Perales) is barely getting to know his size and strength. He will be good for us for the next couple years.”

The sophomore, Sanchez, has hit a peak in his game this year, averaging 16.3 points, 5.1 assists and 5 steals per game. Gonzalez is at 11.5 points and 7.1 rebounds. Flores is scoring 16 per game. For Flores, the progression of getting back from an ACL injury last year was not easy, but he is now fully back.

“I had a really good game against St. Joe’s,” Flores said. “That was when I felt like, ok I’m back. I really had it going that night, and that gave me a lot of confidence.”

While Hidalgo has often been known for its shooting, coach Sanchez said this year, they have the ability to beat teams in so many different ways.

“We have always felt that if we play hard and we play good defense, we have a chance,” he said. “If we can complement our defense with going up and down and making shots, and now trying to balance our team with going inside, it is just another dimension we have added.”

Not only is the starting five playing lights out, but the depth on the Pirates’ bench is top notch.

“We want to make sure that we are not one dimensional or two dimensional, we are working with the younger kids,” Coach Sanchez said. “We have had more of shooting team over the years, but I think this team is a very balanced team. We just have to get our kids used to going inside.”

The Pirates are 18-6 overall and 4-0 in District 32-4A.

“There is still a lot of room for improvement,” the sophomore, Sanchez said. “We are still learning to play with each other, we are jelling a lot, especially now that we are in district season. We will get there, and we are getting closer. We will get there by the time playoffs come.”

The demands on the Pirates are high, but by playing the schedule they do, it is all about being ready for the postseason.

“In non-district, we were going against higher level teams,” Sanchez said. “We played 6As and 5As, especially going up to Fredericksburg. iIt got us a lot of experience playing with bigger players. We played against kids who were 6-5, 6-6. That is what gets us ready for the playoffs.”

And it is clear the Pirates intend on being a big factor in the playoffs this year.

“It is exciting, because it is our senior year,” Arjona said. “We have a senior ballclub, and we want to leave our mark. So, we are taking every opportunity we get and making the most of it. Hopefully that will lead us deep into the playoffs.”

Salinas, Economedes make road statement with win over Edinburg North

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG — The frustration was apparent after a combined four technical fouls between Edinburg Economedes and Edinburg North in the rivalry game.

Edinburg Economedes senior Angel Salinas walked up the court, frustrated, with his fist clenched.

With just less than two minutes to go, Salinas made a move, and sunk a 3-pointer from just above the break on the right wing.

“I knew it was going to go in,” Salinas said. “I was playing my game, just had to beat the ‘d.’ When the ball left my hands, I knew it was in.”

The basket gave the Jaguars a three-point lead, and the Jaguars’ defense and near perfect free-throw shooting clinched the 61-55 victory at Edinburg North in a pivotal District 31-6A matchup.

“This one felt good, because they always beat us,” Salinas said of North. “They beat us both times my sophomore year, and they beat us once last year. This one feels good to beat them at their home.”

The game had the feel of a blowout early, North charging out to a big lead, spurred on by the raucous home crowd.

The Cougars took a 21-6 lead into the second quarter, and North center Juan Garcia made matters worse with two thunderous blocks to start the second quarter. The Jaguars, however, would not be denied.

“What I tell the kids at all times, the other team is going to make a run,” Econ coach Carlos Ramos said. “We had to sustain the run, and we did. I knew eventually we would get the opportunity to come back. We were preaching to the kids that as long as we cut it to seven by the half, we would be ok. They played better than I thought, and we were down by two.”

Salinas, who proved to be one of the best players in the Valley on Tuesday, led the comeback charge. He got to the line and fought through the foul to start the run for the Jaguars. The Jags outscored the Cougars 18-5 in the second quarter. Sophomore Trini Moreno made two big threes to free up Salinas. Michael Barrientos grabbed a board and got a beautiful looking shot off at the buzzer, to send the Jags to the halftime break, down just two points.

“(Salinas) has been our leader, this is year No. 4,” Ramos said. “He doesn’t fold under pressure. In fact, I think it is quite the opposite; I think he thrives under pressure.”

Out of the half, the Jags had all the momentum, and who else but Salinas, sunk a 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring, and give Econ a one-point advantage.

North was impressive early behind Andrew Nunez and Juan Vasquez. Sergio Quintanilla was the one at the end who kept the Cougars in the game. He scored 14 of North’s 18 points to close out the game, but his efforts could not get the Cougars past the Jaguars.

Nunez finished with 9 points, Vasquez added 14 and Quintanilla led the team with 22.

It wasn’t all dominance by North that led to the early lead. The Jaguars were just off their game, whether it was nerves or a sluggish start, Economedes just needed a little spark to get going.

“All we needed was defense and teamwork,” Moreno said. “That’s all we had to do, move the ball and play defense. … Coach talked to us, and we just followed his direction and got it done.”

When the Jaguars are moving the ball, they can vicious. They overcame the lead like it was nothing. It was all due to passing and ball movement.

“We have all been together the past 3-4 years,” Salinas said. “We have a good relationship. We became close, so I trust my brothers. They can deny me; I can trust my brothers to bring up the ball. It is a wonderful team.”

Moreno finished with 12.

“Deadly from the corners,” Ramos said of Moreno. “I told someone, if he is there, and he is by himself, he is going to hit it.”

“I have been working on that shot since like the third grade,” Moreno said. “They were big shots tonight, but that is my shot, in the corner. I don’t miss it.”

Senior forward Saul Alanis didn’t have his best game, but when the team needed him, he sunk his free throws, and played smart defense with four fouls.

“He didn’t play like Saul normally does,” Ramos said. “But here at the end, when we took him out with four-five minutes left, our momentum shifted. They tied the game. It was too critical, so we had to put him in, and experience again got us through.”

Alanis avoided his fifth foul and went 4-for-4 from the line inside the last two minutes. Alanis finished with 16 points.

Salinas’ performance was masterful. He only scored 14 on the evening, but his baskets came right when the team needed them. In his final game at his father’s alma mater, Salinas wanted to make a statement; he did.

“I just talked to my team. I told them we just had to play with intensity and play defense,” Salinas said. “In that moment, we knew we were going to click. The momentum came our way, and we just knew we weren’t going to let up.”

Salinas steps down at Weslaco High

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

After rebuilding one of the most storied programs in Valley history, Michael Salinas is hanging up his coaching headset.

Michael Salinas resigned as Weslaco High School’s football coach and athletic coordinator on Tuesday to pursue a job outside the coaching field, according to a school district news release.

“Although this was a difficult decision, at this time I believe this is the right career move for me and my family,” Michael Salinas said in the press release. “I would like to thank the players, assistant coaches, staff, administration, school board and the community of Weslaco for welcoming me and my wife and I thank them for all their support. If I was going to continue my career as a football coach, there is no other place that I would rather be than at Weslaco High School. But after 18 years of coaching football, I am moving on to a different career.”

Salinas coached the Panthers for two seasons, leading them to a 13-8 overall record. Weslaco went 11-2 this season, winning area-round and bi-district championships before losing in the third round of the playoffs to Austin Lake Travis.

Sources indicate Salinas met with his players and staff Tuesday to give them the news personally. Salinas was a proud member of the Weslaco ISD community, often attending sporting events, and supporting the Panthers.

“We thank Michael Salinas for his two seasons as head football coach and wish him well in his new job,” Weslaco ISD Athletic Director Oscar Riojas said in the press release.

Before coaching for Weslaco, Salinas was the football coach at Edinburg Vela for six years, where he went 36-20. Salinas led the SaberCats to the playoffs in each of his final three seasons, making it to the third round in 2015.

With a large class of juniors returning on offense, there is plenty of talent at Weslaco, and whoever assumes the role of head coach, will be set up to succeed right away.

Laredo Alexander uses PKs to beat La Joya Palmview in Mission Invitational title game

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — As Laredo Alexander junior Omar Cabrales stepped to the spot to take the fifth Alexander penalty after a 1-1 regulation, there was nothing but confidence from the Bulldogs.

Alexander coach Daniel Hermosillo looked into the eyes of his junior, and he knew he was the one for the kick.

“We always tell them, ‘if you feel confident let us know, regardless of who it is,’” Hermosillo said. “Omar was very confident, he said, ‘Coach, I will shoot it.’ We said go for it, and he told me after the game, ‘I felt like I was going to make it.’”

The Bulldogs’ confidence was bolstered by the semifinal they witnessed just prior to their game. In the second semifinal on Saturday at Tom Landry Stadium, the same setting for the final, The La Joya Palmview Lobos and the PSJA North Raiders also went to penalties.

“We saw them play against PSJA North, and we saw that they had made a switch on their goalie,” Hermosillo said. “We were able to take a few notes and see some of their players kick.”

As many of the Bulldogs did before him, Cabrales went left and tucked it home, just beyond the reach of Palmview senior keeper Saul Delgado.

The Bulldogs exploded onto the field and mobbed their teammates, first Cabrales, and then junior keeper Liam Ayala.

“It was an amazing experience, because in my four years with this program, we have never been past the first round,” Alexander senior defender Reynol Hinojosa said. “To come all the way here and win it, it is something special. I know my team is so special, because we have chemistry, we have talent, we have heart, we have everything a team needs.”

Alexander beat Palmview 3-2 in PKs after 40 minutes of 1-1 soccer. The Bulldogs claimed the Mission Soccer Invitational title.

“Since we knew that we were coming here, we were excited, because we knew we had a good team,” Hinojosa said. “We knew we could do something bigger than last year, when we lost in the first round. All the players wanted it. It felt amazing. We won the first three games on Friday, and then we came here on Saturday, and we won the other three.”

The win is not just the first tournament win in Alexander program history, but also the first time even making it to the final of a tournament. But, that’s just the kind of season it feels like is coming for the young Alexander program.

Alexander is the only school in Laredo not to have won a district title in boys’ soccer, but the Bulldogs feel like this could be the year to change that.

“Now, we are the only Laredo school to have won this tournament,” Hinojosa said. “I feel like this season, we are headed deep into the playoffs. There is something about this team.”

Tournaments like the Mission Soccer Invitational are great for programs to get good action before heading into competitive district seasons. That was very true for Palmview, whom few expected to get to the final.

“We came this close to taking it all,” Palmview coach Juan M. Hernandez said. “I am very proud of these boys. The camaraderie, that is what is most important, is what comes out of it. Not just how well they can function on the field, but also the outside of the field. Hopefully we can build on that and continue our process.”

What made Palmview’s play even more impressive was their ability to overcome several obstacles. With two key players missing due to injury, and their starting goalkeeper gone for the year, the Lobos had just four players on their bench.

“This is the kind of tournament that can make you, can help you build on what you have, and makes you realize who you can count on,” Hernandez said. “We were hurt; we fought through injuries and tiredness, so they showed a lot of character. That is what these tournaments are for, to see how well they do against adversity.”

Similarly, Alexander had a monumental win on the way to the title, making the road to the final as impressive as the win itself. The Bulldogs faced off with the Big Bad Wolves of the Valley in La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, and the Bulldogs prevailed.

“We have a lot of respect for that program,” Hermosillo said. “We know that they are a tremendous program. They have always been a tough team. It was really exciting to see our kids compete with them, and we were really blessed to be able to beat them in the game.”

Both soccer clubs have high hopes for their season, and this tournament could just be the beginning of two special journeys this year.

“Econ is always in playoffs,” Hernandez said of one of the team’s wins from Friday. “Going up against Del Rio, who is a premier program, they were unbeaten, and we sent them home. I say that as humbly as possible because they are an amazing team, and we have faced them twice in the playoffs. … This tournament brings a lot of confidence to the team, and now it is time to build off of that.”

“We always come to the Valley because we know that there is always great competition,” Hermosillo said. “We bring our kids for them to have that experience and for us to prepare for our district. It has been five years for us, coming here. It was a great experience for our kids. We are really proud of our kids.”
