First-place Pirates pull off comeback to beat second-place PI

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

HIDALGO — The game was high-flying, action-packed and full of 3-pointers, but the difference was the defense.

With 5:12 left in the third, Port Isabel sophomore forward Cole Pickerton knocked down a jumper to extend the Tarpons’ lead over the Hidalgo Pirates to three points. That woke up the Valley’s fifth best scorer, junior forward Daniel Rinza. He scored the game’s next nine points, single-handedly lifting the Tarpons to a 10-point lead.

“We called a timeout, and we don’t usually call timeouts,” Hidalgo coach Gus Sanchez said.

In the huddle, Hidalgo senior guard Andy Flores heard a strong message from his teammate, senior forward Alexis Gonzalez.

“Alexis called it out, he said ‘I am going to stay on him. I’m not going to let him shoot. I’m not going to let him score,’” Flores recalled. “And ever since he did that, I didn’t see (Rinza) do anything else.”

The next 39 seconds proved Gonzalez right, as he locked down Rinza, and allowed his team to get going.

Senior Forward Saul Arjona hit a 3 to start the run, but what woke up the entire gym was the 3-pointer sophomore guard Gus Sanchez hit on the next possession. He cut the lead down to four, and then the Pirates took off.

“As soon as I let it go, I saw it in the air, and I said that is money right there,” Sanchez said.

In 106 seconds, the Pirates went from down 10 to a tie at 38. Hidalgo carried that momentum into the fourth and took the game over. They held PI to just eight fourth-quarter points. The Pirates (25-6, 11-0) took control and beat the Tarpons (24-6, 9-2) 60-46, on Friday night in a Class 32-4A matchup.

“After halftime, (Coach Sanchez) told us, we have to pick it up,” Flores said. “Either you want to share the championship or you want to be the champions.”
Sanchez, who is the Valley’s 10th leading scorer, scored five of the 10 points in the run to end the third quarter.

The Pirates knew this game was crucial. Port Isabel was the only one-loss team left in 32-4A coming into Friday’s game. Now the Pirates hold a two-game advantage over the second-place team with just three games left on the schedule. Technically, they can’t be crowned just yet, but the Pirates’ win puts them in line to take home yet another district title.

“You have to give a lot of credit to PI, they came to play,” coach Sanchez said. “It was a championship atmosphere for a championship game.”

The defense was fierce from wire to wire. Both teams pressed quite often, and both teams created plenty of turnovers.

The Pirates knew this game was big, so they studied the tape from the first matchup very closely. Hidalgo won the first meeting, 60-54, on Jan. 8. Hidalgo was also down in that game and needed a late push to win it. Gonzalez was vital in that game was well, leading the team with 14 points.

On Friday, he scored eight. Flores had 12, and Sanchez led the way with 15. For the Tarpons, Rinza finished with 18, but no other player broke double digits. Pickerton had 9.

In studying the film of that game, the Pirates knew that Port Isabel had three talented forwards in Rinza, Pickerton and junior center Jason Lowe. For Hidalgo, meanwhile, the younger Sanchez described his team’s starting unit as “four smalls and one big.”

Instead of adjusting to the opponent, Hidalgo used its defense and speed to force Port Isabel into a smaller unit.

“We know that if we run them up and down, we can get them tired,” the younger Sanchez said. “That is our motto, just keep on running.”

Port Isabel was at its best offensively when all three forwards were on the court, but they couldn’t run that unit for long, because the mismatches at the other end hurt the Tarpons.

A key to the Tarpons’ bigger lineup is the rebounding advantage, but Hidalgo utilizes a team rebounding philosophy, and no one epitomizes that more than Sanchez. While he was the smallest player on the court, he hauled in six rebounds.

“We needed those, and he hit some big shots there,” Coach Sanchez said of his son. “He is a player, and he has been a player for us for the last two years.”

The Pirates aren’t looking ahead just yet, and they know they have to take care of business, but with the playoffs looming so large, the players can’t wait to make an impact.

“The last couple years haven’t gone our way,” Gonzalez said. “We really want to go far.”

Position changes paying dividends for No. 1 McAllen Rowe

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Last season, McAllen Rowe often had Louie Yebra at the five and Darrin Everage at the four.

It worked, obviously, as the team captured a district title running through District 30-6A undefeated along the way.

But, after the year, leading scorer Derek Luna and leading assist man Adrian Bernal both departed the program.

“We had a lot of guys leave, and we had a lot of people count us out,” Louie Yebra said.

Longtime coach Jose Luis Yebra had already planned out how to use the players he had to fill the gap.

“Last year, I knew both Darrin and Louie were uncomfortable playing at the low block,” coach Yebra said. “This year, we were able to move them outside, and it has been great for our team. … Darrin is our best true point guard, and with his size, he is hard to guard. … Louie has become a scorer. He is looking to slash into the lane. He is so hard to guard because he is so long. Once he gets into the lane, there is nobody that is going to block his shot.”

Now a sophomore, Louie Yebra and the junior Everage have excelled in their new roles, leading McAllen Rowe to the No. 1 spot in the Valley’s Top 10, and an undefeated campaign through the new look District 30-6A, so far.

Rowe is truly at the forefront of position-less basketball in the Valley.

“Once I got to high school, coach trusted me to handle the ball, because he saw that I was good at finding my teammates,” Everage said. “So, he let both of us run the point guard. Now that we are doing that most of the time, coach has been able to rely on us to do it.”

Louie Yebra is averaging 17.1 points per game, and Everage is at 11.5. Everage is averaging 5.1 assists per game, and Yebra adds in 4.2 per game. And on defense, both use their good hands to create turnovers. Everage averages 3.6 steals and Louie Yebra averages 3.2.

The move was something that fit well for both players, because they already had experience playing on the wing. Louie Yebra and Everage have been friends since elementary school. They grew up playing together and played on the same grassroots basketball teams growing up.

“Our team was a fast-paced team, much like here at Rowe,” Everage said of the pair’s AAU team. “The emphasis was on fast breaks, shooting 3s and playing good defense. When we got to high school, of course, the pace was quicker, but we knew how to play within this style of play.”

Not only did both move positions, but both also worked hard on their game during the offseason. Everage’s passing is an art. He grew up watching Chris Paul, and quickly started experimenting with how to make unique passes.

“The way (Paul) can create opportunities for his teammates and manipulate the defense to get the ball to the spot he wants, I always try to carry that in my game,” Everage said. “From a young age, I always tried to play with different passes to see where they would go. See how different spins on the ball affect the pass. It has become natural to me. Just trying to be able to fit a pass through a tight crease or trying to get it across court in a different way, so the defense isn’t expecting it. It has really helped me.”

Coach Yebra always stressed to both boys to add those perimeter skills. His experience as a player taught him that just because a player is tall doesn’t mean they should become a back-to-basket center.

“When I played the game, here in the Valley, if you were 6-(foot)-4, 6-5 you were only allowed to play the inside,” Yebra said. “I learned from friends of mine, because we didn’t have the training and access to the coaching that these kids do now. I had a friend who would make me shoot outside, and try to become a guard. I think that really helped me at the college level.”

So, Coach Yebra transferred that knowledge to Everage and his son.

“He really helped me at that time at becoming the player he knew I could become,” Everage said of Coach Yebra. “He told me, from a young age, that I could be so much more than what I was doing at the time, which was being a post. I really believed in that, and he has been there to help me and give me advice the whole way.”

“He always told me to work on every part of my game,” Louie Yebra said. “We worked on passing and dribbling even when I played the five.”

To a man, everyone on the team will confirm that the change in positions for both Everage and Louie Yebra would not have been possible without several key players. It starts with senior center John Galan, but senior forward Tristen Mata plays a key role in that equation as well.

“At the end of the year, last year, we felt like (Galan) was improving at the post position, and we had Tristen also,” Coach Yebra said. “In the offseason, we worked with them and at that point, I felt like we could move Louie and Darrin out and use John and Tristen in the post.”

Galan is averaging 11.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.

“He looks up to a kid who used to play with us, Freddy Ayala,” Coach Yebra said. “He told me, ‘coach I want to lead us in rebounding like Freddy used to do.’ And he made it happen, he is scoring inside and rebounding. He has really helped us out.”

Beyond those two, Mark Medrano and Adrian Salinas complement the big guards with smart play, great shooting and lots of hustle. The bench has also been key for Rowe.

Both Everage and Louie Yebra came into Rowe with great expectations on them. Yet, neither have any sort of ego. That is what works about Rowe. The team is very low ego, with everyone willing to do whatever they can to help the team win. Against PSJA North on Tuesday, Yebra scored nine points and Everage added eight.

“If somebody would have told me before the game, Louie will have nine and Darrin will have eight, and you are still going to win the game, I would have said no,” Coach Yebra said. “But, the other kids stepped up and they hit the shots. It is big for us, when we can get that contribution from everyone.”

Louie Yebra has become a new player in the new role.

“I am more comfortable on the court now,” he said. “I knew I would have to step up, so I worked hard to be ready for this year. We know we have something special. The way our team clicks and plays together, it shows what we are capable of.

“We want to get past the first round. We know we can, but we also know it will be tough.”

Team ball leads McAllen Rowe to sweep of PSJA North

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — The No. 1 team in the Valley, McAllen Rowe, stepped up in its toughest test to date.

PSJA North came into McAllen Rowe and seized the momentum early on. McAllen Rowe led for the first few minutes, but when the Raiders took the lead at the 1:37 mark of the first quarter, they took control of the game.

The North 3-pointers started to fall, and the Raiders were up 15-9 after one quarter, and 26-20 at the half.

“In the first half, I saw them a little bit down, they were hesitating to shoot,” Rowe coach Jose Luis Yebra said. “That’s what I did at halftime. I just wanted to make sure they believed in themselves, and had the confidence to shoot the ball.”

Rowe responded by hitting five threes in the second half and holding North to just two from beyond the arc.

The biggest three of the night came from senior guard Mark Medrano, who sunk a beautiful shot with 4:12 left in the fourth quarter. The shot gave Rowe a 41-38 lead, the Warriors’ first lead since 2:01 of the first quarter.

“That 3 felt good, because it told us the game was over,” Medrano said. “We knew we were going to make all of our shots, and it was over.”

Rowe beat North 53-44 in a pivotal District 30-6A matchup. Rowe remains unbeaten in District, while North suffers its second loss in 30-6A.

In the first meeting between the two teams at PSJA North earlier this year, North got into foul trouble. senior Arutro Beltran and sophomore Elijah De La Garza both fouled out before the game was over. On Tuesday night at Rowe, it was the Warriors who found themselves wincing with every foul call. When the game ended, the Warriors had three players with four fouls.

“Some of our kids came off the bench and hit a couple threes, because they were leaving them open,” Yebra said. “Darrin (Everage) did a great job. He did what we asked him to do. I told him to drive and find the shooters. He did, and we were able to come back.”

Josiah Alonso came off the bench and hit a 3, and Jon Elizondo hit a pair of 3s. All three came after the rousing halftime speech.

Medrano, a Weslaco East transfer, has been a difference-maker all year, but not just because of his scoring.

“All of us have to be involved in the defensive rebounds, and I think tonight, (Medrano) kept his head and got the job done,” Yebra said. “We needed to control the boards down low, and he helped us out with that.”

Coach Yebra’s son Louie Yebra was one of the Warrios most affected by foul trouble. The Valley’s James Harden, Daunte Galvan, was able to penetrate and cause havoc in the post. Several of his drives resulted in fouls on Yebra and the other foul-plagued Warriors.

In the fourth quarter, Yebra had a plan to stop the North offense.

“We made an adjustment on defense, and they didn’t have an answer for that in the fourth quarter,” he said.

The adjustment was to double-team Galvan and take away the Raiders favorite 3-point shots. The pan worked to perfection, as the Raiders were held to just nine points in the final frame.

Medrano is a great example of why the Warriors have been so successful. It all started on his first day with the team.

“The first day I got here, the whole team showed me the locker room,” Medrano recalled. “They walked me to lunch, and showed me my classes. They have been great teammates since the very beginning. They made me feel like one of them.”

With an experience like that, Medrano easily bought into the team-first mentality that has boosted the Warriors this year. Watching talented offensive players like Everage, Louie Yebra and Adrian Salinas constantly pass up good shots for a better shot from a teammate made Medrano want to give his max every night for the team.

Medrano’s ability to create turnovers, pass the ball, hit shots and rebound has allowed him to fit right in, something Everage knew would happen even before he arrived.

“We played against him before, and we knew he was a solid player,” Everage said. “But we also knew once he came over here, he could flourish within our system. Him coming over here, it helped us a lot, and it shows how good of player he is.”

The selflessness that surrounds the Warriors program has been a key to their success this year. Everyone is willing to shoot when passed to, and everyone is willing to pass if their teammate is open.

“That comes from our chemistry and the work we do in practice,” forward John Galan said.

“We had a lot of people leave,” Everage said. “We had a lot of people count us out. So we were very accepting from Day 1. We had to make ourselves a team. Doing that brought us together and led to our success.”

Now that the Warriors are beyond both games against PSJA North and McAllen High, the second- and third-place teams in the district, the district title is in their sights.

“We take it one game at a time,” Coach Yebra said. “Our goal at the beginning of the year was to win the district title. This puts us in a great position to do that. Is it going to be easy? No. We still have four teams to play. But, as long as we stay positive and continue to work together, we have a chance to accomplish our goal.”

Diamondbacks hold on to secure win over Mission Vets to stay perfect

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — Getting to the top is a challenge, but as Sharyland Pioneer can attest, staying there is even harder.

“I told my guys, you are undefeated and that means you have a big target,” Pioneer coach Rene Gonzalez said. “Everyone in our district wants to be the team to beat us. They will be ready for us, especially in the second round.”

That was the case on Friday night as Pioneer got off to a late start against Mission Veterans, then found a way to get the 56-43 win to stay undefeated in District 31-5A competition.

“It wasn’t as easy as we thought it would be, but a win is a win,” junior guard Luke Padilla said. “We just had to dig deep, get some stops defensively and execute offensively.”

The Diamondbacks had a 26-15 lead at the half, and all the momentum carried into the second half, as Pioneer looked ready to run away with it.

Just when things started to seem bleak for the Patriots, senior guard Noe Cantu found his rhythm. The Patriots went on a 16-3 run that started at the end of the third and carried into the fourth. The Patriots cut the lead to three points and Cantu scored 12 of the 16 points on the run.

“We called a timeout, and coach settled us down,” sophomore guard Miguel Angel Gonzalez said. “They told us, we have to stop Noe, and that was it.”

After the break, Cantu missed his shot on back-to-back possessions, and the Diamondbacks seized control and iced the game.

The game started much later than it should have, thanks to a delay in the girls game between the same teams on the same court, just prior. The game officially began just after 8:30 p.m., an hour after the scheduled start.

“We just stretched and stayed mentally ready in the locker room,” Miguel Angel Gonzalez said. “We weren’t able to shoot after halftime, but they had a hallway, and we were getting hyped in there.”

Padilla hit a big 3-pointer just before the half to push Pioneer’s lead into double digits. With sophomore guard Eddie Lee Marburger out with a season-ending injury, Padilla is one of many Diamondbacks who have had to step up in his absence.

Padilla finished with 21, Miguel Angel Goznalez added 10. Junior forward Lavar Lindo also finished with 10 for Pioneer.
Cantu led the way for Vets with 25.

“The good thing about these kids, is they look for each other,” coach Gonzalez said. “That is the mentality they have in practice, and it carries over into the games. We have a motto: make everybody around you better.”

The Diamondbacks had six players score Friday, and sophomore forward Miguel Ramsoo would have made it seven players, if not for an off-ball foul on his 3-pointer.

Things got a little testy before the half in the Mission rivalry game. Patriots sophomore AJ Gonzaque and Lindo got tangled up a few times. Then Gonzaque went to try to score in the paint, but Lindo came down with a thunderous block. Lindo was called for a foul on the play, and in response, Gonzaque blew a kiss. Gonzaque was given a technical for the kiss.

“He is six four and he is strong, and he will always have a big target on his back,” Coach Gonzalez said. “I told him, ‘teams will always try to do different things on you. You have to stay composed at all times.’”

Lindo kept his calm after that, and was able to play a big role in the team’s performance in the second half.

The Diamondbacks improve to 21-7 overall and 9-0 in 31-5A. they are one game up on Rio Grande City, but Friday’s win all but secures Pioneer at least a second seed.

The team’s trek toward a district title continues Tuesday, when the Diamondbacks take on PSJA Memorial at 7:30 p.m. on their home court.

“We have to stay humble,” Miguel Angel Gonzalez said. “We have to keep grinding in practice. We have to thank God for the position he has put us in. And we have to stay hungry and humble.”

Covarrubias leading Rio Grande City on and off court

BY SAUL BERRIOS-THOMAS | STAFF WRITER

RIO GRANDE CITY — Growing up, Rio Grande City senior guard Jaime Covarrubias Jr. was more of a baseball player.

Part of that was due to the fact that for 10 years, from ages 4-14, Covarrubias lived in Yakima, Wash. a place he described as very “baseball-first.”
Covarrubias’ family was from Rio Grande City, so when he moved back at 14, it wasn’t quite like starting over, but it wasn’t easy either.

“I had friends over there,” Covarrubias said. “I didn’t know much moving back. Over there I made a bunch of friends, in elementary. It was a new experience. And then coming here it was a new experience. I was the new guy, kind of shy, didn’t know anybody.”

Basketball was a way to ease some of that discomfort.

“I got a long with a lot of people,” Covarrubias recalled. “Especially in Houston, I would go over there to play ball, because I had a Tio over there. I would go play over there, very competitive.”

One of the first people Covarrubias befriended upon his return to the Valley was his future teammate and current Rio senior forward Bryan Jones. However, calling him that might just get some confused looks from the Rattlers, because they all know their high-IQ big man as “Chachi.”

“Chachi invited me to play with him on Team Rio,” Covarrubias said. “He took me to a whole bunch of places, he put me up when I was in eighth grade. I started playing for him. We went to San Antonio, Laredo, and of course, Houston with my Tio.”

Basketball became a huge part of Covarrubias’ life, and he quickly became one of the best players in the area. By the time he got to high school, he was ready to dominate.

In 29 games this year, Covarrubias is averaging 16.5 points, 4.2 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game. Plenty of those stats are impressive, but it is even more impressive when you factor in that he plays right next to another dominant guard in junior Aaron Marroquin, who also has solid numbers. Marroquin is at 15.8 points, 2.3 assists, 6.6 rebounds and 3.1 steals.

“Me and Jaime have been playing together for a while,” Marroquin said. “It is hard to stop us because if you stop me, Jaime will score, and if you stop Jaime, I’ll score.”

“I call them my salt and pepper,” Aldape said. “Jaime is more of a calm guy, Aaron has so much fire. They intertwine, and they help each other out; when one is low the other is high. It is good to have both, because you know you can feed off of that energy from Aaron and then Jaime has that poise and calm confidence when the pressure is on.”

As a 14-year old, Covarrubias and his family was devastated by the death of Jaime’s father, Jaime Covarrubias Sr.

“It was a tough time for my family,” Covarrubias said. “Basketball was big. Chachi brought me in around that time. Basketball helped me get away from my problems.”

Rio coach Juan Aldape has stressed throughout his 14-year career that basketball is a sport that can help through tough times.

“Basketball is where there are no worries, there are no bills, it’s just you and the court,” Aldape said. “(Covarrubias) has found a way to find that safe haven within the court and he has exceled at it. He has fought through it, and it shows his passion.”

Covarrubias was dealing with a lot of pain, but he also knew he had to be the man of the house, for his mother Anastacia, and his two younger brothers Edward, 15, and Rolando, who turned 11 Wednesday.

“My mom, she has a lot of pressure,” Covarrubias said. “But I try to take as much pressure off of her as I can. I watch my brothers. Anything I can to help her out.
During the summers, I go to the ranch,” Covarrubias said. “Two summers ago, I went back to Washington to work in the fields. Made some money there. Paid bills, and helped my mom out.”

And while caring for and being with his brothers has been a big part of his life for years, the past two years have shown him another way to impact their lives: as a role model on and off the court.

“I see it in his little brother, the way he looks up to Jaime,” Aldape said. “Hopefully he grows up to be like Jaime, not just on the court, but as an individual. He is the one that leads us in prayer, he is the one that leads the team. He is a great person, great kid and great friend.”

The Rattlers are 19-10 overall and 7-1 in District 31-5A, just one game behind district leader Sharyland Pioneer, Rio’s only district loss of the season.

“We are focused on our next game,” Aldape said, speaking of the Rattlers’ matchup tonight with Sharyland High. “We know we are playing well, but we also know this district is tough, and with six games left, there is a lot that can happen.”

For Covarrubias, walking out onto the court, he can always spot his mom and brothers in the stands. Seeing them gives him all the motivation he needs to give his all.

“They are ready to go as soon as he comes home from school,” Covarrubias said. “You can see in my brother’s eyes, he’s thinking ‘I want to rock this world already, I want to feel that atmosphere.’”
