Rivera hangs on to beat Los Fresnos

ROY HESS | Staff Writer

The Rivera Raiders dodged two bullets at the end to prevail over the Los Fresnos Falcons 21-20 in District 32-6A action Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium.

Trailing by one point, the Falcons marched down the field as time ticked off the clock and missed a 40-yard field goal with eight seconds left. A running into the kicker penalty on the Raiders gave the Falcons another field-goal chance from 35 yards with three seconds remaining.

Both attempts failed, giving the Raiders an emotional victory.

Rivera, which earlier this season snapped a 20-game losing streak, improved to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in district.

Los Fresnos, coming off last week’s 24-3 victory at home over Harlingen South, slipped to 2-5 and 1-1.

First-year Rivera coach Beto Leal was ecstatic.

“The credit belongs to our players, their parents, our coaches and our administration,” Leal said. “Everyone believed. All the hard work these kids are putting in is paying off. Everyone believed, and that’s the great part.

“The players are telling me this is Rivera’s first district win in four years,” Leal added. “That makes me even happier for them. This win belongs to eveyone at Rivera.”

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Raiders tallied a pair of touchdowns to lead 14-7 at halftime.

Ramiro Vega went into the end zone from 7 yards out off left tackle to give Rivera a 7-0 lead at the 5:31 mark of the second period after Kevin Zarrazagas’ extra point.

Los Fresnos evened the score at 7 when a wide-open Nico Valencia caught a 32-yard scoring pass on a deep pattern down the middle from quarterback Adrian Longoria with 3:50 left before intermission. Job Esquivel added the extra point.

It became 14-7 for Rivera with 1:54 to go before the break when Hugo Ugalde caught a 57-yard TD pass from quarterback Chito Perez. Zarrazagas added the extra point.

After Rivera went ahead 14-7 before halftime, Valencia returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a TD right before the half. However, a block in the back call on the Falcons wiped out the score and returned the ball into Los Fresnos territory.

Los Fresnos later tied the game at 14 when Chris Resendiz scored on a 2-yard run with 8:18 showing in the third quarter. Esquivel was good on the conversion.

Rivera went ahead again at the 3:33 mark of the third quarter when Perez scrambled 29 yards to the end zone and Zarrazagas’ kick made it 21-14.

That turn of events set the stage for the Falcons’ Miles McWhorter to score on a 4-yard run around right end with 6:13 to go, but the extra point failed, leaving Los Fresnos down 21-20.

It wound up being a down-to-the-wire victory that Rivera fans will remember for a long time.

District action continues for both teams next Friday. Los Fresnos is at home against Harlingen High, while Rivera is at Harlingen South.

Los Fresnos solidifies hold on first in 32-6A

By ROY HESS | Staff Writer

LOS FRESNOS — The pecking order in District 32-6A volleyball has been established, at least at the top.

District leader Los Fresnos (7-0) won at home against 32-6A second-place Rivera 25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14 on Tuesday to give itself a little cushion in the standings.

The Lady Falcons now have beaten Rivera (5-2) and Harlingen South (4-3), considered their two biggest challengers in 32-6A twice apiece. Three matches remain on the 32-6A schedule.

“This was one of the hardest matches I’ve ever had to coach,” Los Fresnos coach Becky Woods said. “I knew when I watched Rivera warm up that we had a great match coming at us. You know what? We need that kind of match to get ready for the playoffs. We’re going to have four or five big girls coming at us (in the playoffs) instead of just one or two (like Rivera has).”

Rivera coach Elizabeth Avelar-Guerra said she was proud of the way her team played and added it just didn’t do enough to win Tuesday.

“It was a very hard-fought match, and it was a very good match,” the Rivera coach said. “Both teams played well. Los Fresnos chased everything and kept the ball alive. That helped them a lot. They’ve got a great offense with some great hitters, and they moved the ball around well. They were calm, and they played together.

“Our girls did the same thing, but we came up short,” she added. “Every once in a while our girls let the ball drop because they were looking at each other, and that cost us. Our girls played well. They just got into little ruts here and there.”

Winning the first two games was a big boost for the Lady Falcons.

During the third game, Rivera was ahead by scores of 8-2, 11-4 and 17-10 before Los Fresnos came back and pulled within two points at 21-19, 22-20, 23-21 and 24-22. The Lady Raiders wound up winning the third game 25-22.

After six ties during the fourth set — the last at 6 — the Lady Falcons went ahead for good at 7-6 and didn’t look back. They won the fourth game 25-14 due to a net violation by the Lady Raiders on the final point.

Stat leaders for the Lady Falcons included Jasmin Garcia (10 kills, two aces), Tate Halford (eight kills), Gio Godoy (14 total blocks), Cadence Castillo (19 digs), Ari Gallardo (17 digs), Victoria Hernandez (one ace) and Clarissa Esquibel (22 assists).

For Rivera, the stat leaders were Laisha Izaguirre (16 kills, four digs), Kenya Ibarra (13 kills, nine digs, one ace), Christina Garza (13 kills, four digs), Richelle Guerra (20 digs, one ace) and Alondra Guzman (20 digs, three kills).

District action continues at noon Saturday. Rivera is at home against Harlingen South. Los Fresnos is at Harlingen High.

Herald Volleyball Notes: Road remains tough for Lady Falcons

By ROY HESS, Staff Writer

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons are in the midst of back-to-back challenges that could lead them to another outright District 32-6A championship.

First, they triumphed 25-18, 9-25, 25-9, 25-19 on Saturday at Harlingen South. Now comes another big test against Rivera at 6:30 p.m. today in Los Fresnos.

At 5-1, Rivera is right behind the 6-0 Lady Falcons in the 32-6A standings. South (3-3) is tied with Harlingen High (3-3) in third place. Rounding out the six-team district are Hanna (1-5) and San Benito (0-6).

After seeing her team defeat South on Saturday and knowing Rivera was the next opponent, Los Fresnos coach Becky Woods said, “The closer we get to the end of this district race, the more the stress level goes up. We have four more district matches to go. Let’s see how it goes.”

The other two 32-6A matches at 6:30 p.m. today find Harlingen High at Hanna and San Benito at South.

The Lady Cardinals want to have a strong showing against Hanna. The two teams went five sets during the first round of district Sept. 24 at Harlingen High, with the Lady Cardinals winning 17-25, 25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 15-7.

“It’s a huge match for us (against Hanna),” Lady Cardinals coach Joslynn Torres said. “The key for us is to be ready to set the tone in Game 1, Point 1. In the first round of district we let Hanna hang around too long. We know we can’t allow that to happen because the playoffs are on the line for both of us.

“We know the environment that we will be playing in (at Hanna),” Torres added. “The girls have the mindset of going in and getting the job done by taking care of business quickly.”

TAPPS PLAYOFFS

The St. Joseph Academy Lady Bloodhounds have qualified for the TAPPS playoffs as the third-place team in their district behind Victoria St. Joseph and Laredo St. Augustine.

This is the Lady Bloodhounds’ third varsity season and it’s their second in TAPPS. This year marks the second time they’re advancing to the TAPPS playoffs.

“We are excited to make our second playoff appearance in TAPPS,” SJA coach Dolores Olguin-Trevino said. “We are going to play either Houston Cypress Christian or Houston Emery Weiner. We will be the higher seed, so we might get to play at home (in the first round).

“I’m extremely proud of the girls for stepping up in spite of losing half of our varsity starters (to transfers, etc.),” Olguin-Trevino added. “It just proves their hard work will pay off with persistence.”

The Lady Bloodhounds will be hosts of a “Dig Pink” cancer awareness match today at SJA.

The opponent will be San Isidro. The cancer awareness event will take place after the junior varsity match, which starts at 4:30 p.m. Fans are asked to be at the gym by 5 p.m. with the presentation scheduled between 5:15-5:30 p.m.

STRONG SHOWING

The Porter Cowgirls came up with a strong showing in defeating Mercedes 25-14, 25-23, 25-19 on Saturday at Porter.

Stat leaders for the Cowgirls included Liberty Garza (20 digs, two aces), Azaneth Perez (eight kills, two aces, 13 digs), Katherine Salas (14 kills, nine digs, one ace), Anahi Villarreal (eight kills, two blocks), Marisol Martinez (two kills, two aces), Mickey Garcia (nine kills, three aces, two blocks) and Ashley Pena (41 assists, two kills, one ace, seven digs).

The Cowgirls next play at 7 p.m. today at Valley View.

Star Volleyball Notes: Lady Cards prepared for battle with Hanna

By ROY HESS, Staff Writer

If there are two teams in District 32-6A volleyball that are very evenly matched and consistently seem to battle to five games almost every time they play, it’s Harlingen High and Brownsville Hanna.

That’s the way it’s seemed in recent seasons.

The most recent time they played was Sept. 24 during the first round of district, and the result was another five-set match that was won at home by the Lady Cardinals 17-25, 25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 15-7.

The rematch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at Hanna, with both teams nurturing hopes of making the playoffs.

The Lady Cardinals know it could be another back-and-forth, five-set duel, and they have a strategy they’re taking into the match.

“It’s a huge match for us,” Lady Cardinals coach Joslynn Torres said.

The Lady Cardinals enter today’s action with a 3-3 record, which has them tied for third place in district with Harlingen South. Hanna is 1-5.

Los Fresnos is the 32-6A leader with a 6-0 record. Brownsville Rivera is second at 5-1. Rounding out the district, it’s San Benito at 0-6.

The other two 32-6A matches at 6:30 p.m. today find Rivera at Los Fresnos and San Benito at South.

HOLDING THEIR OWN

The Lyford Lady Bulldogs are holding their own in the battle to reach the playoffs in District 32-3A.

The Lady Bulldogs are 9-4, which puts them behind district leader Brownsville Jubilee and second-place Santa Rosa.

It’s a 10-team district.

The Lyford girls next play host to Weslaco IDEA Pike at 6 p.m. today.

“We still have five more district matches, so there’s still room for seedings to change (in the playoff race),” Lyford coach Lisa Lancaster said.

32-5A UPDATE

SJA finishes second at district meet

By ROY HESS, Staff Writer

The St. Joseph Academy girls took second place as a team in Monday’s TAPPS district cross country meet at Our Lady of Corpus Christi Retreat Center.

The meet host was Corpus Christi Incarnate Word Academy.

“I’m proud of our runners, both the girls and the boys,” SJA coach Teddy Lopez said.

It was a five-team district meet. It precedes the TAPPS state meet next Monday at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco.

Besides SJA and C.C. Incarnate Word Academy, other schools participating in the TAPPS district meet were Victoria St. Joseph, Corpus Christi John Paul II and Laredo St. Augustine.

First place in the girls division was won by Incarnate Word with 36 points. SJA was second with 44 and Victoria St. Joseph was third with 45.

Individually, the first and third runners in the girls race were from Victoria St. Joseph.

The top finisher for the SJA girls was sophomore Valeria Bazan, who came in second. Teammates Isabela Douglas and Camila Martinez finished sixth and 10th, respectively, to earn all-district honors for placing in the top 10. SJA also had runners finish 11th and 14th.

IWA’s runners came in fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth and 13th.

Bazan showed great improvement, Lopez said.

“Valeria was third last year, and she knocked 23 seconds off her time this year (to finish second), so she improved quite a bit,” Lopez said.

“(The race conditions were) pretty hot and humid,” the SJA coach added. “There was no wind.”

The SJA boys placed fourth out of five teams with a squad comprised of mostly freshmen.

St. Augustine won the boys team title with 49 points. IWA was second with 56, Victoria St. Joseph was third with 74 and SJA was fourth with 85.

Individually, SJA sophomore Pedro Cardenas finished second in the boys race behind Victoria St. Joseph sophomore Nick Rodriguez.

“Those two have a nice rivalry going in cross country and track,” Lopez said. “Pedro knocked about 25 seconds off his time from last year.”

Also for SJA, freshman Alejandro Ramirez placed fifth to earn all-district status.

It was not a qualifying meet for state, but rather a “bragging rights” meet at the district level, Lopez said.

“It was fun to compete for bragging rights in a relaxed atmosphere,” the SJA coach said. “We’ve got one more race to go (at state). We’ve had a good season, and I’m just proud of our runners.”

Lopez said SJA will be taking seven boys and seven girls to the TAPPS state meet.

SJA prepares for district meet

St. Joseph Academy is hoping for strong showings from its girls and boys at Monday’s TAPPS district cross country meet in Corpus Christi.
The meet host is Corpus Christi Incarnate Word Academy. The meet course is at Our Lady of Corpus Christi Retreat Center.
Besides SJA and C.C. Incarnate Word Academy, other schools participating in the TAPPS district meet are Victoria St. Joseph, Corpus Christi John Paul II and Laredo St. Augustine.
From the district meet, runners move on to the TAPPS state meet Oct. 21 at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco.
“Last year we were second at district as a team (in the girls competition),” SJA coach Teddy Lopez said. “Obviously, we’re hoping to win this year.
“Our girls have been running pretty decently all season, and I’m proud of them,” Lopez added. “Competing in the small school (or junior varsity) division, our girls won the Brownsville ISD meet and the Port Isabel Invitational.
“I’m excited to see how we’ll do. I think we will have a better showing than last year.”
The top three runners for the SJA girls are senior Camila Martinez, sophomore Valeria Bazan and junior Isabela Douglas, who is the girls team captain.
“Camila is a senior who came out for cross country for the first time and is doing well,” Lopez said. “She’s become our No. 1 runner.”
Other runners for the SJA girls include Marcela Valenzuela, Emma Gonzalez, Amanda Hinojos, Ana Paula Gonzalez, Valeria Conteras, Ana Ybarra, and twin sisters Lucia and Alejandra Gonzalez, who are sophomores.
In all, SJA has 11 girls going to Monday’s meet in Corpus Christi plus seven boys. Five of the boys are freshmen.
The SJA boys are led by sophomore Pedro Cardenas, the team captain who placed second last year at district. Other leading runners for the Bloodhounds are freshman Alejandro Ramirez and senior Antonio Garza. The remainder of the squad includes freshmen Juan Pablo Butron, Diego Garza, Rolando Vasquez and Rafael Villalobos.

Hiccup doesn’t cost Los Fresnos in win over Harlingen South

By ROY HESS | Staff Writer

HARLINGEN — A little lapse is somewhat permissible in volleyball as long as the team doing the lapsing comes back and wins.

On Saturday in a District 32-6A showdown, Los Fresnos won the opening game against Harlingen South, then practically disappeared during the second set in losing decisively before bouncing back to win the next two games and take the match at the South gym.

The 32-6A defending champion Lady Falcons captured the match 25-18, 9-25, 25-9, 25-19 against the Lady Hawks as the teams began the second round of district competition.

Los Fresnos (31-8 overall) improved to 6-0 in 32-6A. The Lady Hawks (23-7) slipped to 3-3 in district.

“We cannot play like we played during that second game today (in losing 25-9),” Los Fresnos coach Becky Woods said. “We didn’t talk (to each other), we didn’t communicate, we didn’t pass, we couldn’t serve, we couldn’t hit, we couldn’t tip and we couldn’t do anything right.

“That second game was a disaster,” Woods added. “I don’t know what happened, but we cannot do that as we get closer to the playoffs. The first game we came out and played well. That was important. The first game is always important. You have to win that first game, and then you just hope that you can follow through and win the next two to take the match.

“If you can’t win the second game, then it’s all tied up again (just like at the beginning of the match), and it becomes anybody’s contest. It was like that today.”

A 25-18 victory during the first game gave the Lady Falcons the cushion they needed to weather the storm during the second set. The Lady Hawks held advantages of 10-3, 17-6 and 23-8 before Los Fresnos hit into the net on the final point of the second game to give South a 25-9 win.

The third game proved to be completely different. It became the Lady Falcons’ turn to dominate play by surging to leads of 6-1 and 14-8 before scoring the last 11 points of the set to win it 25-9 on a block by Los Fresnos’ Jasmin Garcia.

Tate Halford stepped up for the Lady Falcons during the third game to score on a number of kills, tips and a block.

“After our first set we had a terrible second set, so we had to alter the way we were playing to show South who we really are,” said Halford, a junior outside hitter. “We had to come together as a team (during that third game). We needed to play smart and help everybody out.

“It wasn’t about who was going to get the points or the kills or things like that,” she added. “It was about everyone helping each other out. It was like a big team effort (to get the win in the third game and get back on track in the match).”

The Lady Falcons again surged ahead during the fourth game and led by as many as 10 points twice, 17-7 and 18-8. Both times came on kills by Garcia. Los Fresnos won the fourth set 25-19 when the Lady Hawks were called for a carry on the final point.

South also lost at Los Fresnos in four games Sept. 21 during the first round of district.

The Lady Hawks remain strong contenders for the playoffs, although their district title aspirations were diminished with Saturday’s setback.

“I thought we played well,” South coach Anissa Lucio said. “We have to give credit to Los Fresnos because they have a really good team. We held our own, but we know there are some things we need to fix before our next match Tuesday against San Benito.”

Los Fresnos next plays host to Brownsville Rivera (5-1) on Tuesday in another 32-6A showdown.

Leading the Lady Falcons’ statistics Saturday were Garcia (20 kills, eight digs, three blocks, three assists, one ace), Halford (10 kills, 15 digs, four aces, two blocks), Clarissa Esquibel (46 assists, 11 digs, two blocks) and Cadence Castillo (34 digs, 21 service receptions).

The stat leaders for the Lady Hawks included Mikela Mireles (19 kills, 21 digs), Mya Pearl Aguirre (21 digs, 11 assists, six kills), Alexa Encinia (22 digs, 21 assists), Odemarys Vidana (three blocks, two kills), Zoe Garcia (44 digs), Evelyn Yanez (22 digs) and Mia Zamorano (seven digs).

Power outage postpones PSJA Southwest-Lopez game

By ROY HESS | Staff Writer

A power outage prior to Friday’s scheduled football game between Brownsville Lopez and PSJA Southwest at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville led to the postponement of the District 16-5A Division I contest until 11:30 a.m. today at the same site.

As darkness set in Friday, there was no power to the lights on the home side of the stadium, nor to the scoreboard, although the lights on the visitor’s side were on.

Fans sat patiently through the delay and cheered when the power came on at 7:51 p.m., which was 21 minutes past the game’s scheduled start time.

It was then announced the game would start at approximately 8:15 p.m. The teams warmed up, and PSJA Southwest soon kicked off to Lopez. On the kickoff, the ball went out of bounds at the Lopez 29-yard line, and the teams lined up for the first play of the game.

But before the ball was snapped, the power went out again. That was 8:15 p.m.

The teams were sent back to their respective locker rooms to wait and see if power could be restored. After about an hour, it was announced the game would be postponed until this morning.

PSJA Southwest is 3-2 overall and 2-2 in district. Lopez is 0-5 and 0-4.

Brownsville PUB continued to work on the issue Friday night.

Campos, Eagles open 32-6A title defense with win over Raiders

By ROY HESS | Staff Writer

The Hanna Golden Eagles opened defense of their District 32-6A championship with a 35-14 victory against the Rivera Raiders on Thursday night at Sams Memorial Stadium.

It was The Brownsville Herald’s Game of the Week.

Hanna improved to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in district. Rivera slipped to 1-5 and 0-1.

“It’s been kind of the same for us about every game,” Hanna coach Mark Guess said. “We tend to have kind of a slow start in the first half offensively, and then we make a couple of adjustments at halftime (and play better in the second half).

“The big thing (tonight) is we kept playing hard,” Guess added. “These players don’t get down. They stay level-headed and keep playing the way you ask them to. Nobody gets down, and nobody gets too high (when we’re winning). We just try to put points on the scoreboard.”

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first and led 7-0 with 9:17 showing in the first quarter when Sabian Arceneaux broke loose around the right side and sprinted into the end zone from 11 yards out. Tommy Green added the extra point.

Rivera tied it at 7 at the 3:19 mark of the opening period when quarterback Chito Perez scored on a 1-yard keeper. Kevin Zarrazagas kicked the extra point to create the tie.

That’s the way the first-half score ended as the Raiders failed on a 43-yard field-goal attempt on the final play of the second quarter.

Hanna broke it open during the third quarter as QB Victor Campos scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards to boost the lead to 21-7 before Rivera QB Perez found the end zone on a 41-yard scramble to close the gap to 21-14 by the end of the period.

Hanna added a pair of TDs during the final period to pull away. Campos threw a 7-yard scoring pass to Manny Gonzalez early in the fourth quarter and then went into the end zone on a 12-yard keeper with 5:46 remaining to account for the final score of 35-14.

“Our goal this week, and all we spoke about, was to get to 1-0 in district,” Guess said. “Every win in district is so important because it’s such a tight district. It’s still anybody’s championship to win.

“We just felt that if we harped on being 1-0, 1-0 and 1-0, we’d eventually get to 1-0,” Guess added. “We played hard the second half tonight. The players came back and got the job done.

“We’ve got a good Harlingen (High) team next, so we’ve got to be ready.”

Both teams were coming off bye weeks.

In their most recent games prior to Thursday, Hanna lost to Amarillo Tascosa 55-7 on Sept. 28 at Abilene Christian University, while Rivera lost 55-7 to La Feria on Sept. 26 at Sams.

District action continues next Thursday when Rivera plays host to Los Fresnos at Sams and next Friday when Hanna plays at Harlingen High.

When Hanna played Rivera last year at Sams, the Eagles won 48-0.

Lady Raiders roll past Lady Cardinals

By ROY HESS | Staff Writer

BROWNSVILLE — The anticipated back-and-forth drama and non-stop intensity never quite materialized during Tuesday’s District 32-6A volleyball match between Brownsville Rivera and Harlingen High at the Lady Raiders’ gym.

The main reason it didn’t was that Rivera came out on fire during the opening two games, and by the time the Lady Cardinals found their composure in the third set, it was pretty much too late.

Rivera won the match 25-8, 25-12, 26-24 to end the first round of district with a 4-1 record. Harlingen High slipped to 2-3.

Los Fresnos leads 32-6A with a 5-0 record after Tuesday’s 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 win at home against San Benito.

Rivera coach Elizabeth Avelar-Guerra said her team’s beginning to the match was a big reason for the outcome.

“I think it was very important that we came out so strong in the first two games because we set the tempo,” the Lady Raiders’ coach said. “Our girls set the tempo, they got confident and they were playing strong.

“Our start was great,” she added. “When we got to the second game I was trying to tell the girls that they played awesome, but not to relax. I told them to forget the first game because Harlingen (High) was going to come back. I told them they needed to start playing hard (again).

“A lot of times in the second game we’ve been dropping (our level of play) a lot. But the girls did great. They stayed focused and they stayed aggressive. I think they relaxed a little too much in the third game (though).”

The third set featured seven ties. The final deadlock came at 24 when Rivera had a blocked ball carry out of bounds.

A kill by Rivera’s Nisa Zuniga made it 25-24 before a hitting error by the Lady Cardinals that carried out gave Rivera the point it needed to win the third game and sweep the match.

“We knew coming in that Rivera was going to be a good team that would keep the ball in play and a team that was going to attack every single time,” Lady Cardinals coach Joslynn Torres said. “That’s exactly what they did. We were prepared for that, but of course, we obviously fell short. We didn’t see the spark that we needed until the third game (when we jumped out to a 10-3 lead before Rivera rallied).

“In volleyball, unfortunately, that’s a little too late (most of the time when your rally comes in the third game),” Torres added. “After our loss to Harlingen South (last week in three games), we don’t like to go down 3-0 (to Rivera), but all we can do is learn from it. This district is so evenly matched, it’s crazy.”

The stat leaders for the Lady Cardinals on Tuesday included Elaine Coronado (nine kills, seven digs), Callie Cervantes (27 digs), Alexandra Ramirez (four kills, four blocks), Juli Bryant (four kills, three blocks), Gabby Serna (five blocks, two kills), Elena Aguinaga (11 assists, 10 digs) and Destiny Martinez (nine assists, six digs).

For Rivera, the stat leaders included Alondra Guzman (10 digs, three kills, two aces), Christina Garza (six kills, five digs), Clarissa Olivares (29 assists, 12 digs), Kenya Ibarra (14 kills, six digs, two aces), Kimberly Chavez (seven blocks, four kills, two digs), Laisha Izaguirre (five blocks, four kills, two digs) and Richelle Guerra (20 digs, two aces, two kills).
