St. Joseph athlete wins $20,000 Foot Locker scholarship

By GARY LONG | THE BROWNSVILLE HERALD

Marte Rodriguez received the good news he was hoping for late Wednesday morning in the St. Joseph Academy Student Center when representatives of the Foot Locker Foundation showed up to award him a $20,000 scholarship as part of the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program.

Rodriguez and his classmates were in the student center as part of the annual Marist Day of Service. Ricardo Ramirez, general manager of Foot Locker operations in the Rio Grande Valley, presented him with a giant check for $20,000.

The award will be paid in four installments of $5,000 each during the course of Rodriguez’s university career. Ramirez, who is based in McAllen, said this is the first time in the seven years that Foot Locker has awarded the scholarship that it has gone to someone from the Rio Grande Valley.

“This proves that dreams do come true,” he said.

Rodriguez is the Class of 2018 valedictorian. He has been accepted and plans to attend the business honors program at the University of Texas at Austin.

“This will help a lot,” he said.

Also, he is captain of the cross country team, was a first-team state track & field selection, and received a number of awards, including the TAPPS Academic All-State Track & Field Award. He is active in the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.

Rodriguez was one of 20 student-athletes to receive the Foot Locker award and was selected from a pool of more than 13,000 applicants as someone who demonstrates exemplary character and strength.

Ramirez presented the scholarship during an impromptu ceremony following an all-school service in observance of the Marist Day of Service, which was Wednesday.

During the day, St. Joseph students packed a minimum of 108,000 “manna packs” to meet the nutritional needs of malnourished children around the world for the Christian nonprofit Feed My Starving Children.

Arndt leads strong Weslaco High track team into regional meet

HENRY MILLER | SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR

WESLACO — For Eleanor Arndt, the script has already been written. Friday and Saturday, the Weslaco senior will be competing in three events at the UIL Region IV-6A track and field championships.

In two Fridays, she hopes to be at the state meet.

On the Friday in between, she turns 18.

“That’s a birthday present I’m hoping for,” said Arndt, who qualified with her team once as a freshman but has qualified for regionals all four years in high school. “To make it to state in my final year. That would be awesome.”

Arndt, considered one of the favorites to leap to a top-two finish and advance to the state meet, will lead a group of teammates that includes Ciera Gonzalez in the discus and three relay teams from a Panthers squad that won the 31/32-6A area championship as a team. Not only will Arndt jump, but she is also scheduled to compete in the 800- and 1,600-meter relays.

Arndt qualified for regionals in five events, including the triple jump and the 400 run. She also qualified for five events as a freshman, sophomore and junior.

“When we get to this stage, we look at the numbers and put together what we think is the best combination for us to do the best,” Weslaco girls track coach Pablo Almaguer said. “This gives her the opportunity to focus on the long jump, which we think she can advance in, as well as the two relays. Plus, she’s always looking out for the team and knows that five events can be difficult.”

Arndt agreed that removing those two events from her schedule gives her more time to focus and prepare. She said that she’s approaching the regional meet with a different mindset compared to past years.

“When I was younger, I would get very sensitive and emotional, but track has made me tougher,” said Arndt, whose personal record jump of 18 feet, 5.25 inches, came at the McAllen Relays. She jumped 17-3 to win the 31/32-6A area meet. “We also worked a lot more in the weight room this past year, and that has made a difference.”

“She goes all out on a weekly basis, and if she’s at the top of her game, things will fall in place for her,” said Almaguer, who has coached the team for 15 years. “She’s confident, seeded very well and has a chance to win it. And her mindset is about getting to the next round, even if she gets second at regionals.”

Three years ago, Gonzalez was pulled aside by her track coach and asked to consider throwing the discus. She had tried it in middle school but didn’t think anything more of it. Now, she’s getting ready for her third trip to regionals.

“It’s crazy to say this, but there are a lot who can throw as far as I can, but with all that around me, I think it will be a good competition day for me,” the senior thrower said. “I got kind of nervous my sophomore year, going in there as a young buck and then putting too much pressure on myself. Then, as a junior, my knee was injured pretty much the whole year, and it affected me in the fact I started doubting myself.”

Her personal record is 137-3.75 at the Meet of Champions preliminaries. She finished second at the area meet area with a 134-8.

“She understands the discus more this year, and she is throwing it year-round,” Almaguer said. “She has matured and grown and has so much knowledge. She wants to do good all the time, and her work ethic shows it.”

Almaguer said the Panthers’ 800 and 1,600 relays also have a shot to carry their batons to the state meet. The 800 is made up of senior Chantel Barrera, junior Lisamarie Sanchez, sophomore Jenna Martinez and freshman Amity Ebarb, who anchors the team. The 1,600 is sophomore Victoria Nguyen, Arndt, Sanchez and Ebarb.

“The 4-by-200 is a young group, and they have the second-fastest time in the Valley all time,” Almaguer said. “They’ve been impressive and amazing to watch this year. The 4-by-400 hasn’t lost a relay this year, but I don’t think they’ve run their best yet.

“If we do our best in that event, something special can happen there. No matter what, though, if we keep working hard, good things will happen.”

Where are they now?: Cordon getting it done for Schreiner in senior year

BY TJ GARCIA | SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR

Four years after Samantha Cordon walked onto the Schreiner University campus, the senior can look back now and say she was part of something special.

The Edinburg North product is one just two seniors remaining on the roster this year from a class of 10 that started back in 2015. But Cordon has been critical to the Mountaineers’ softball turnaround. They’ve rebounded from a hapless 20-61 during her first two seasons to 22-11-1 this year — a .647 winning percentage.

And through thick and thin, Cordon has been a leader on the field. She hasn’t missed a start in four years, playing in 157 straight games through April 8. This season is the first baseman’s fourth straight batting above .315 (.358 in 2018), and she’s already set a new school record for career hits with 164 — breaking a 15-year-old mark of 153.

Cordon said her time at Division-III Schreiner in Kerrville has been a “rewarding journey,” and that the team’s turnaround can be credited to softball coach Amy Meyer, whose first season was the same as Cordon’s — 2015. Cordon, a right-handed clean-up hitter, started every game as a freshman and batted .347 with 22 RBIs.

“The transition to college was not always easy. College softball is very different from high school, but I became a smarter hitter and learned how to make adjustments,” said the 5-foot-7 Cordon. “It’s a really incredible feeling to set that record. I think of all the time I spent hitting in the cage, hitting with my brother and dad. It all paid off. It hasn’t totally hit me yet.”

Cordon, a psychology major who has earned a slew of academic awards, said she and the Mountaineers have been busy preparing for next weekend’s Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and will try to put a positive cap on the best Schreiner season in a decade.

“We’re going into the conference tournament hungry for a ring,” she said. “We plan to be disciplined, yet aggressive hitters and execute when we need to defensively.”

MUSTANGS’ LOREDO HAVING BANNER YEAR FOR JAVELINAS

Texas A&M-Kingsville outfielder Manny Loredo doesn’t make mistakes. His stat sheet can back him up. He’s had 50 chances in the outfield for the Javelinas, and the junior and 2014 McAllen Memorial grad has converted 48 of them into putouts while the other two were assists. No errors.

Loredo, a right fielder, is helping lead the Division-II Javelinas of the Lone Star Conference to a 31-10 overall record (10-6 in conference) with eight games remaining before the conference tournament. Loredo, a 5-foot-7 UTRGV transfer, is the team’s second-leading hitter with a .305 batting average and is tied for the team lead in home runs with four. He has started 32 of the 36 games he’s played in this year.

PSJA HIGH’S FONSECA STARTING TO HIT STRIDE AT PRAIRIE VIEW

The Prairie View A&M University softball team started the 2018 season 2-12. Enter former PSJA High all-district infielder Gabrielle Fonseca, and now the team is 12-19 and 9-5 in the SWAC (Division-I Southwestern Athletic Conference). Fonseca’s upturn in play at the plate has mirrored the Panthers’ improvement on the diamond.

Fonseca, a sophomore transfer from McClennan Community College, really began to turn it around in late March, when she was scuffling with an .083 batting average. But in Prairie View’s next game, against Alabama State, she went 3 for 4. From there, Panthers ripped off a six-game winning streak. Fonseca has improved her average nearly 200 points. Fonseca, a righty, has started 13 of 23 games she’s played in. The 5-foot-7 second baseman has committed just one error in 41 chances.

BROWNSVILLE VETERANS’ ANAYA A SUPER SOPHOMORE AT UIW

Consider former Brownsville Veterans star David Anaya an early bloomer. Last year, the University of the Incarnate Word infielder started 52 of 53 games for the Cardinals while batting .288 and leading the team in RBIs as a freshman. He also made the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll with a 3.61 GPA. Now, Anaya is at it again.

This year, the 5-foot-11 third baseman is batting .292 and is third on the team in RBIs with 31 for the 26-16 (10-8 in Southland) Cardinals in San Antonio. Anaya has hovered around the .300 mark all season. At one point, he was hitting .330. He also had a highlight reel game against Prairie View on April 10, when he went 5 for 6 and scored five runs. Anaya has only struck out 16 times in 144 at bats and has walked 24 times.

Nominations open for Tom Landry Award of Excellence at 2018 All-Valley Sports Awards Banquet

STAFF REPORT

Nominations are now being accepted for the Tom Landry Award of Excellence — perhaps the most prestigious honor that will be bestowed during the 2018 All-Valley Sports Awards Banquet on June 10 at Mario’s Banquet & Conference Center in Mission.

The banquet, hosted by RGVSports.com and AIM Media Texas in conjunction with the RGV Sports Hall of Fame, will see 33 awards presented to athletes, coaches and teams across all 12 UIL sports.

RGVSports.com received permission from the Landry family to present the Tom Landry Award of Excellence to a student-athlete who represents the values for which Landry is still known: integrity, sportsmanship, character and teamwork. The recipient of the honor will be chosen based on academic excellence, athletic accomplishments, character and community service.

The award was initiated in 2016 to honor the legacy of the former Dallas Cowboys coaching great, a Mission native who died Feb. 12, 2000, at the age of 75. Landry coached the Cowboys from 1960-88 and holds the franchise record for career wins (250). He took the Cowboys to five Super Bowls, winning two.

The deadline for submitting a nomination for the Tom Landry Award of Excellence is May 28. To nominate a student-athlete, superintendents or athletic directors may contact Marcia Kitten by email at [email protected] or by phone at 956-683-4463.

The two publishers of AIM Media’s Valley newspapers — Stephan Wingert (The Monitor) and Frank Escobedo (Valley Morning Star and Brownsville Herald) — will choose a winner from the nominations.

Sean Elliott, a former NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs who now works with the team as a broadcaster, will be the keynote speaker at the banquet. Elliott played for the Spurs from 1989-93 and 1994-2001, earning All-Star recognition in 1993 and 1996 and helping San Antonio to an NBA title in 1999. This season, Elliott was an analyst for Spurs games on Fox Sports Southwest.

The Monitor, Valley Morning Star, The Brownsville Herald, Mid-Valley Town Crier and RGV Sports Hall of Fame will vote to determine the winners in the sports award categories. While The Monitor, the Star and the Herald have previously named their All-Area teams in certain sports, the All-Valley Sports Awards Banquet will recognize the very best across all three coverage areas.

The banquet, which will run approximately 6 to 8 p.m., returns to Mario’s for a second consecutive year. The venue has a seating capacity of more than 500 people. Tickets will be on sale soon at a cost of $40 per person.

Weslaco East rallies past Brownsville Hanna to secure playoff berth

BY TJ GARCIA | SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR

WESLACO — Weslaco East’s Amanda Aguirre ripped an inside pitch — a ball she wasn’t even supposed to swing at — to right-center field, driving in two runs and capping a late five-run rally to put the Wildcats past Brownsville Hanna 5-4 on Friday and into the playoffs.

The Wildcats overcame a disastrous start, as they fell behind 4-0 before scoring three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh on Aguirre’s walk-off hit.

Weslaco East earned a playoff spot on the last night of the regular season by virtue of the victory and losses by Harlingen High and Los Fresnos elsewhere in District 32-6A. Upon learning the news, the team began a euphoric celebration on the field.

Weslaco East committed two errors and yielded three runs in the opening inning. The Wildcats looked completely discombobulated in what could have been one of their worst innings of the season.

“I think it was nerves, and I think it was a lot of emotion, because our seniors were playing their last home game if we didn’t continue,” Wildcats coach Victoria Vasquez said. “But we had to buckle down, and we told them that they just have to win a half-inning at a time.”

And they did just that. Aguirre, the senior pitcher and Texas Southern University commit, and her defense got into a groove and faced just four batters more than the minimum in innings two through seven, allowing just one unearned run.

Led by the hitting of Britney Garcia (3 for 4, two runs), Jasmine Villarreal and Tatiana Cabrera, the Wildcats woke up their bats and forced their way back into the game by scoring three runs in the fifth to make the score 4-3 Hanna entering the top of the sixth.

After an uneventful sixth, Aguirre struck out a batter and the Wildcats doubled up Hanna with one out to close the seventh inning and set up their last hurrah.

Cabrera and Garcia reached safely to open the inning, and then Hanna intentionally walked Abigail Ortiz to load the bases with no outs. Aguirre followed, and on the first pitch hit a screamer deep into right-center field. That allowed Cabrera and Garcia to cross home plate with ease, giving Weslaco East the win.

“Coach told me not to swing, and I ended up swinging. I wanted to hit,” Aguirre said. “I just took a chance. It’s just that in this game, you never know what could happen. In a game like this, you just don’t know, so you take a chance. And that’s what I did.”

The final at-bat marked Aguirre’s only hit of the game. From the circle, she struck out 10 and walked two.

McAllen Memorial swimmer Vazquez follows his plan to college opportunity with Incarnate Word

HENRY MILLER | SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR

McALLEN — Everybody who talked about McAllen Memorial swimmer Jorge Vazquez on Wednesday mentioned his “plan.”

“He knew what he wanted,” his McAllen Swim Club coach, Alex Lerma, said. “He had a plan, and it involved his schooling, his athletics — all of it. He knew what he was doing.”

In front of hundreds of classmates, teammates and teachers as well as his mom, dad, brother, sister and grandparents, Vazquez signed his national letter of intent to swim for Division I University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. His scholarship was a combination between athletics and academics.

“I’ve been nervous all week,” said Vazquez, the two-time District 30-6A champion in the 100-meter breaststroke and school record holder in that event. “This is something I’ve been looking forward to and working hard for. I can’t believe it’s finally here.”

Vazquez’s dad, Rafael Vazquez, began swimming when he was 8 and competed until he was 15. At 16, he found out he was going to be a young father and turned his attention to his family.

“When Jorge got older, we asked him what he wanted to do as far as sports,” the elder Vazquez said in Spanish. “He said swimming. He wanted to do the same sport I did, and we put him in at 8 years old.

“I’m very proud. I gave it up at a young age, and I’m so happy he took it up and has worked so hard. He made a plan and stuck to it.”

During his first year swimming for the McAllen Swim Club, Jorge Vazquez qualified for the South Texas Age Group championships, passing by others who had been swimming and competing for years.

“It was an honor and just amazing to be there,” he said.

A year later, he qualified for the Texas Age Group Swimming Championships in all three of his events — the 50-, 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in the top eight in all three.

“Jorge has a really good work ethic, and he’s a natural talent,” Lerma said. “He also has that ability to find the things that he needs. As soon as he entered high school, he just exploded his first year.”

Lerma said the sky is the limit for Vazquez because of the talent and coaching that will surround him.

“He hasn’t swam as much his senior year, but he knows what he’s doing,” Lerma said. “He’s planned it out very thoroughly and carefully.”

“I’ve worked hard and had good teammates and coaches and family support,” Jorge Vazquez said. “I just can’t wait to start this new chapter in my life. I’ve waited for this moment.”

McALLEN — Progreso goalkeeper Arturo Gallegos was lying on the ground, stunned after watching a ball fly by him and into the goal to give Taylor a lead 46 seconds into the first 10-minute overtime of a Class 4A Region IV semifinal match on Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

But after Progreso’s Matthew Perez netted the game-tying goal with 8:27 remaining in the second extra period, Gallegos knew he would have another chance.

He took advantage of that opportunity.

Gallegos, a junior, stopped the first two Taylor shots during penalty kicks, and Progreso’s first four players scored on their attempts as the Red Ants claimed a 2-1 victory in PKs to advance to today’s noon regional final against Liberty Hill at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“I felt like I was going to stop them,” Gallegos said. “Especially after they scored in the first overtime period. They surprised me.”

The Ducks’ goal surprised everyone in attendance. For the game’s first 80 minutes, Taylor kept everyone back on defense. Progreso controlled possession, won most of the battles for the ball and had several attempts, but couldn’t break through the Ducks’ defense.

“We knew they were going to come out and play like that and put a lot of people in the box and on defense,” Progreso coach Margarito Jimenez Jr. said. “But this team never gives up. When we were down in the first extra period, I was already thinking the game was going to go to penalty kicks.”

Gallegos was almost fooled on the first penalty kick he faced, at first leaning to his right. The kick, however, came low and to his left, and he dove feet first to kick it away. The second shot went to his right, and he made a diving glove save. That was all the work he needed to do for the day.

Anthony Vasquez started the PKs for Progreso with a low shot to the right corner of the goal. Alejandro Salazar and Fabrizzio Gonzalez followed suit, putting the ball on the same route with the same result.

With the score 3-1, Jacob Martinez sealed the victory with a shot to the other corner, and Progreso players and coaches mobbed Martinez before doing the same to Gallegos.

“I’m blessed to have had a chance to play in a game like this, and my reflexes were ready,” he said. “I almost moved the wrong way on that one shot but was able to recover and kick it away.”

“We kept trying to get through their defense with long balls and long strikes, but nothing worked the entire regulation,” Jimenez said. “This is how we play, though. This is how we’ve played all season.”

Perez had three opportunities to score in regulation, but he was greeted by three or four defensive players every time he came near the goal.

“Coach just keeps telling me to try to get one,” Perez said in Spanish. “We just kept working and working. We had some chances but couldn’t score. But we finally did, and he (Gallegos) was great at the end.”

“He stops everything in practice,” Jimenez said of his keeper. “When we got to the PKs, I was pretty confident at that point that he would stop them then, too.”
