Edinburg North’s Leal nabs double-gold to end state meet

Edinburg North’s San Juanita Leal completed the sweep of the 6A girls distance events to close out the state meet, winning the 1,600-meter run during the final day of the 2023 UIL state track and field championships.

The junior distance runner edged out Lewisville Flower Mound’s Samantha Humphries for the gold with a time of 4 minutes, 47.36 seconds. Humphries finished in 4:48.40.

Leal ends the meet with a pair of gold medals, also winning the 6A girls 3,200-meter run earlier today.

Harlingen High’s Franklin wins 400m silver

Harlingen High’s Faith Franklin is the RGV’s 12th medalist of the 2023 UIL state track and field championships, taking home the silver in the Class 6A girls 400-meter dash.

Franklin clocked in at 53.50 to win the si over, beating out Humble Summer Creek’s Brooke Lloyd (54.11).

The event was the second of three for the junior sprinter, competing in the 6A girls 100-meter dash just one event prior to the 400.

Franklin is set to take the track again during the 6A girls 200-meter dash.

Edinburg North’s Garcia sprints to 800m gold

Edinburg North senior Keyshawn García turned on the burners during the final 200-meters to overtake four runners and win the gold in the Class 6A 800-meter run.

García clocked in at 1 minutes, 51.53 seconds to win the race.

The Cougars senior is the second Edinburg North athlete to win gold during Day 2 of the state meet, joining junior San Juanita Leal.

Garcia is set to run again in the Class 6A 400-meter run later today.

Lasara’s Rodríguez repeats in discus throw

Lasara’s Xiomara Rodríguez won her second straight Class 1A discus thrower state title, bringing the Valley’s gold medal count to five.

Rodriguez moved from fourth to the top spot on the podium on her final throw of the day, recording a mark of 136 feet, 11 inches for the win.

The Lasara junior has has now medaled in the 1A discus throw each of her three years, including back-to-back state titles. She also won the silver as a freshman.

Rodriguez is set to compete again later today in the Class 1A shot put.

Edinburg North’s Leal captured state gold

Edinburg North’s San Juanita Leal added state champion to her resume, taking the gold in the Class 6A girls 3,200-meter run during the final day of the 2023 UIL State Track and Field Championships.

Leal, a junior, clocked in at an unofficial time of 10 minutes, 19.19 seconds for the win.

The gold medal improves on her fifth place finish of a season ago.

The Cougars junior is set to run again later today in the Class 6A girls 1,600-meter run.

McAllen Memorial’s Granados wraps up career with fourth state medal

McAllen Memorial’s Granados wraps up career with fourth state medal

McAllen Memorial’s Ayden Granados captured the fourth state medal of his high school career, finishing 2nd in the Class 5A boys 1,600-meter run during Day 2 of the 2023 UIL state track and field championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Granados finished in an unofficial time of 4 minutes, 10.83 seconds to capture the silver, his second medal of the day. Adam Burlison won the gold with a time of 4:08.64.

The Oklahoma State signee finishes his track career with four state medals, capturing a pair of silvers last year in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

He earned silver medals in both events last year.

La Villa’s Salazar captures first career gold

La Villa’s Kaycei Salazar capped off her state debut in dominating fashio, winning gold in the Class 2A girls 1,600-meter run during Day 2 of the 2023 UIL state track and field championships.

Salazar, a sophomore, finished in 5 minutes, 5.75 seconds to win the event, collecting the first gold medal of her career.

The Cardinals distance runner captured silver in the Class 2A girls 3,200-meter run earlier today.

Sharyland High’s Ikondu nabs fifth podium finish for RGV

Sharyland High’s Chukwubueze Ikondu became the fifth RGV athlete to get to the podium during Day 2 of the UIL state track and field championships, taking home the bronze in the Class 5A discus throw at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Ikondu recorded a throw of 169 feet, 11 inches during his fourth attempt to secure the top three finish. Midlothian’s Kyen Purser finished second with a mark of 170-03, with Ennis’ Heath Vernon taking the gold with a throw of 184-09.

Pioneer’s Thompson claims 5A shot put title

Sharyland Pioneer’s Evan Thompson became the RGV’s second state champion during Day 2 of the 2023 UIL state track and field championships, winning the Class 5A boys shot put title.

Thompson recorded the top two marks of the event, opening with a throw of 60-00 and finishing it with a mark of 60-03.75.

The UIW signee wraps up his track and field career with a pair of medals, capturing a bronze in the same event last year.

Thompson’s medal count brings the RGV’s total to four on the day.
