Clamping down: Edinburg Vela girls leap Donna North for second place in 31-6A

By NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

DONNA — Edinburg Vela took down Donna North 2-0 on Friday night in a playoff-like atmosphere game featuring playoff-bound teams.

Heavy wind was a factor all game, blowing from South to North, but the SaberCats were able to score in the first half, with the gusts at their back, for a lift at the break.

With the victory, Vela improves to 8-2 with 24 points in the standings, while North is two points behind with 22 at 7-4.

Scoring first for Vela was junior Dayana Cantu, who almost nearly sat out because of illness.

“ I got a fever last night and I went to school a little late, but I went to school so I could be able to play,” Cantu said. “I had to come and put some goals in.”

Her tally came in the final two minutes of the first half on a second-effort kick after the goalkeeper was unable to collect Cantu’s first shot.

“ I saw it going out and I had to follow it through to get it,” Cantu said.

Even though the lead was only one, the momentum of a late goal went a long way.

“ That goal really put our heads up,” Vela coach Americo Cortez said. “We knew it was going to be a tough game. We knew the potential they have. And at their place, we knew they were going to come out strong.”

North spent a large share of the second half on possession. Forwards Gabby Aviles and Nancy Espino were the main targets for long passes and attempts to attack Vela’s net.

“ Bend but don’t break” was the mantra for the SaberCats, who didn’t allow many clear looks at the goal. Keeper Joanna Corona, who went in after halftime, was aggressive on bouncing balls that were intended for North’s forwards.

“ We practice those all the time,” Cortez said. “I like my goalie to come out and play like an extra defender.

Vela’s backline might have been even more impactful than the keeper because North was unable to get behind the defense often, if at all.

Cortez specifically credited her group of Lauryn Cast, Geovanna Herandez, Alyssa Muniz and Danya Selber after the win.

“ My backline all played really hard, up to their level,” Cortez said. “They did a great job. They knew they had to step it up. They knew they had to play 200 percent and they did it.”

Vela scored their second goal via the counterattack. Sophomore Taylor Campbell had two chances on possessions around 4 minutes apart. On her first shot, North keeper Damaris Regalado made a strong save on the forward but was injured in the collision that followed.

On the second chance, Campbell wouldn’t be denied as she kept her legs moves to shoot past back-up Michel Garcia.

“ This team is like a level of team we’re going to play in the first round,” Campbell said. “With us coming out strong we knew we had to secure this win if not we were going to stay in third, but we’re ready (for playoffs) we’re good.”

North coach Tony Garcia said his team was up to the challenge.

“ We wanted to pick up the three points, but I leave comfortable with the effort my girls came out with,” Garcia said. “I told them, ‘It’s a playoff game and the team that makes the least mistakes is going to be the one that’s going to come out on top.’ We made two and it cost us.”

North will close out the regular season the week after next against Edinburg High. Vela has a Monday matchup against EHS before finishing with Weslaco East.

Juarez-Lincoln boys win district while standings shift with Mission High forfeitures

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

La Joya Juarez-Lincoln is undefeated still 11 games into District 30-6A play, and has already clinched its third straight district championship with three games to play.

“Three years in a row, it’s not easy and doing it every year with different rosters,” Juarez-Lincoln coach Victor Ramos said. “The kids are playing really well and we don’t have a team, we have a program.”

Ramos, whose teams have reached the regional tournament the past two seasons, said that part of what makes his program almost a machine of high-end talent is integrating young athletes early.

“We have starters that are with us since their freshman year,” Ramos said. “That’s how we’ve made players and we’ve made teams. We constantly have players that are sophomores that practice with us or dedicate a lot of time with the varsity who are J.V. players. We try to expose them to different levels.”

For a majority of those past two seasons, Mission High has been hot on the tail of front-running Juarez-Lincoln. That’s why District 30-6A’s executive committee’s decision to turn five of the Eagles’ district wins into losses sent a wave of ripple effects.

La Joya High head coach Alex Davila said his team, which moves from third to second in the standing, isn’t shifting gears.

“Yeah it bumped us up to second place but it really doesn’t change the mindset, we still had a chance for second place regardless,” Davila said. “Yes, it’s a better standing and a possible favorable playoff opponent but last year we were fourth and we went against first place (San Antonio Southwest) and we had a chance to win, even though we were short starters.”

The Coyotes fell in bi-district to Southwest on penalty kicks. Davila hopes his returners and newcomers can benefit from an improved district when the postseason rolls around by month’s end.

“Every team in our district, even those that are in the bottom of the table across the board have produced close games,” Davila said.

As for the team that catalyzed the late-season drama, Mission High head coach Christos Barouhas said the forfeitures came from an honest mistake rather than cheating to get ahead.

The district executive committee ruled that use of a fifth-year senior was the reason for forfeitures, not using a player with outstanding red cards.

Mission was five points back of Juarez-Lincoln heading into its March 1 matchup that was another closely contested victory for the Huskies. After the decision and the defeat, the Eagles were eight points behind PSJA North (16 points) for the fourth and final playoff position.

The Eagles are already making their push to reach the playoffs from their unfavorable position. After taking down PSJA North on Tuesday Mission is up to 11 points with the playoff line still at 16 points.

“The rest of the games, the last two or three games are going to be competitive,” Barouhas said. “It’s going to be a championship for us. Everyone is having a good attitude about it. They are supporters of me too. We’re all together in it, we’ll do our best to make it all the way to the last game.”

Prior to the reversal, the Eagles were 6-2-1 in district play with 33 goals scored and 17 against.

Donna North wins district in first 6A season

Donna North head coach Andres Sanchez and his team were on the bus after their 10-1 win over Weslaco High when results from the district reached their cell phones.

Thanks to Edinburg High’s 3-1 win over Economedes on Tuesday, the Chiefs were home free as 31-6A champions in their first season after UIL realignment bumped them up to the state highest classification.

“It was amazing for them because they’ve been working for this,” Sanchez said. “It’s not something that just happened. Every day we remind them to do the little things so that we can get to celebrate things like that.”

After spending the last two season in the gauntlet of 32-5A with the likes of Brownsville Pace, Porter, and Lopez the Chiefs are a chiseled unit.

“It was a very strong district, some people say it was one of the top districts in the state,” Sanchez said. “I remember when we were playing with those schools every game was like a final. It was a playoff game, it was to stay alive for the playoffs.”

McAllen High rolls 11-1 over McAllen Rowe in 30-6A baseball opener

BY BRYAN RAMOS | STAFF WRITER

MCALLEN — The new-look District 30-6A is a lot tougher this season compared to last, but it was the same old Bulldogs on Tuesday night as McAllen High rolled over McAllen Rowe 11-1 in the district opener in five innings at McAllen Rowe High School.

Junior Elijia West fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle as he led McHi with five RBIs on the night, including three in the first two innings.
“We knew it was our rivalry school, so we all wanted to come out strong and ready to go,” West said. “I think we all did good. We were all making solid contact, putting the ball in play. We just got on base and scored runs. We all work hard to get everyone in.”

The Bulldogs exploded for seven runs in the second inning, which was helped by two McAllen Rowe errors.

“For us, it’s the start of a new season, which is the district season,” McAllen High coach Eliseo Pompa said. “We’re in a very tough district and we had to come out ready to play and I think my kids were ready. We played well in Corpus (Calallen Tournament), we didn’t hit too well with men on base, but today we did.”

Aaron Nixon got the job done on the mound for the Bulldogs as he racked up 12 strikeouts while facing 18 batters.

Rowe center fielder Isaac Gallegos was able to end the no-hit bid with a double in the 4th inning, and an RBI by Christopher Reyna gave the Warriors their lone run to spoil the shutout.

“Honestly, our worst inning was there in the second,” McAllen Rowe coach Adrian Leal said. “We had to make six or seven outs to get three, but these guys never get down on each other. You hate to lose, but they showed they didn’t want to go home early, they want to score runs, they want to compete against a talented guy like that on the mound. They enjoy rising up to the challenge, and the more cuts we get, the more practices we get and the more games they get under their belt, it’s only going to make us better.”

McAllen High improves to 1-0 in district play and 10-2-1 on the year, while McAllen Rowe falls to 0-1 and 7-4 overall.

West said the district-opening win over a good Rowe team was big and puts the team on the right path.

“I think it’s very important because it gets our mindset right,” he said. “It lets us know that if we can play as a team, we can beat any team out here.”

Next up for McHi is the San Antonio Baseball Classic Thursday through Saturday. The Warriors move on to the ECISD All-American Classic this weekend in Edinburg.

Rematch resurgence: Valley View beats Brownsville Veterans to take district lead

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

PHARR — The top teams in RGV 5A boys soccer, and arguably in the entire valley, Valley View and Brownsville Veterans faced off for the second time this season and the first time on the Tiger’s blue turf in South Pharr.

Both teams scored once in the first 40 minutes, but Valley View scored twice in second half to pull away and emerge victorious, 3-1 score Tuesday night. The Tigers hold a game edge in the District 32-5A standings.
Valley View improves to 10-1 with its only loss coming Feb. 5 in Brownsville against the same Chargers. Vets is now 9-2 with a loss to Brownsville Lopez in the first round of district.

“It’s a challenge for us and we like the challenge,” Tigers senior Jorge Amaya said. “We know how to keep ourselves under pressure, it’s the key for us.”

After the game, Valley View was complimentary of their Tuesday opponents, the Brownsville Veterans Chargers.

“We knew what they had, we saw them in regionals and we knew what they could do with the ball,” Valley View coach Damian Magallan said through a translator. “Our key players gave us the win.”

Even though the Tigers respected their opponents, they knew they had to be the aggressors early because two early goals against factored into the road loss a month ago.

Just four minutes into the game the Tigers gave their crowd a reason to cheer.

Amaya served up a corner kick pass to freshman Pablo Torre who was able to put Valley View in front early.

Any signs of Chargers offensive pressure was hard to come by in the game’s first 10 to 15 minutes but once Veterans was able to utilize their counterattacking speed, the chances followed.

As the clock passed the midway point, Albert Maradiaga, who scored both goals in the first meeting, put his head to a centering pass and into top section of the net.

With 2:20 left in the first half, the road Chargers nearly stunned the Tigers by taking a halftime lead when Mark Boswell was alone after a through pass. Boswell was only able poke his leg while sliding and Valley View’s Joaquin Ramirez in goal made the save.

Magallan gave his team an earful at the half but the Tigers were better for it. The 2018 regional champions, victors over Veterans in last year’s regional final, came out strong after the break.

“We just played our game,” Amaya said. “We’re used to scoring three or more goals every game so we don’t fall under pressure by allowing a goal. We just play our game and our style and move up from that moment.”

While Chargers’ chances were much less frequent, reliable saves by Ramirez was a jolt of reassurance for sweeper Adrian Rodriguez and the team in front of him.

Magallan said his key players gave him a boost, but on a team that has only lost twice in the past two seasons there are vital pieces all over the pitch. Christopher Flores, who had a first-half yellow card was tough to bump off the ball and played a physical game with his frame.

Chippy play nearly boiled over when Valley View’s Christopher Flores sprinted midfield toward the Chargers net. The player pursuing him hit the turf on an apparent hand to the face but no call was made. At the next stoppage, arguing resulted in a Veterans’ yellow card and minutes of litigation.

Minutes later Flores made a run with the ball down the right side of the field before sending a centering pass that was in the perfect spot for Rogelio Saldivar to head home the go-head tally.

Another Valley View freshman, Aner Gonzalez, scored to ice the win. He had two early chances in the first half and was finally rewarded when he followed up an Amaya shot that the Veterans’ keeper couldn’t initially collect.

Gonzalez, who was noticeable all night, said he was happy to get on the scoresheet after a number of close calls.

“I felt a little bit relaxed because in the other games I couldn’t score the goals and I was a little frustrated,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez, who is one of a select group of freshman making a quick impact with the experienced team, said he’s honored to be a part of the tradition at the high school.

“I am very proud to be on this team, all the history they have,” Gonzalez said. “We went to a tournament in Houston and everyone was talking about us, it’s a really cool feeling.”

Valley View will face Edcouch-Elsa, Brownsville Pace and Donna High before beginning its playoff journey as the Tigers try to reach the state tournament in Georgetown for a second straight season.
