Edinburg North girls score late, clinch 31-6A championship

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG — Edinburg North needed at least two points against Weslaco High to climb back into first place, where they have spent most of the season…they earned all three.

Thanks to a late penalty kick that Daniela Ortiz hammered home off the goalie’s fingertips, the Cougars completed a comeback and edged the Panthers 2-1 at Richard Flores Stadium on Wednesday night in Edinburg.

With the win, North leaped over Edinburg Vela to earn its second straight district crown, with a slightly different group of teams in 31-6A.

Ortiz, who hurt her leg earlier in the half, had a lot to deal with between the pain and the nerves of a district title on her boot.

“Honestly I was so super nervous,” Ortiz said. “I felt like I was going to make it but I was nervous that maybe I was going to make a little mistake. A lot of things go through your head when it goes up there by yourself.”

Even her shot had drama as the keeper made contact with the rise, but not enough to parry the blast.
“I thought she was going to save it. I was like ‘oh no,’” Ortiz said. “You have to give a strong kick so it can totally go in there.”

The Cougars were able to celebrate with certainty 4:21 later when time ran out and first place was official.

Weslaco High was already eliminated from playoff contention but the fifth-place team in the district didn’t make things easier for the home team.

In the game’s first 10 minutes, the Panthers turned a scramble in front into a lead when Neida Cantu put a soft touch on the ball over the Cougars keeper.

“Weslaco has lost many games but they’ve all been close,” North coach Danny Valdez said. “This is the second time we beat them by one. I don’t know any team that’s beat them by more than a goal or two. They’re a tough team and I knew they were going to give us a hassle.”

Once North found its ground after the conceded goal, the qualities of an experienced team was on full display. Ortiz was a main distributor in the middle. Passes continually caught the Panthers defense off their line.

Small, speedy forward Janelle Saenz put the Cougars on the board when she scored on a breakaway with 24 minutes to play in the first half.

“I just prayed to God that they would send me the ball and I would have the speed to get there,” Saenz said.

North continued to send balls behind the Panthers backline. The Cougars had three breakaways in total, along with numerous narrow offsides that might have adjusted the final score if the flag stayed down.

Sanez was glad that the work her team put in was enough to win the district title.

“It was nice to come out on time because we worked our hardest,” Saenz said. “We waited for this game and we worked our butts off. Thank God He gave us the speed and endurance to win.”

Valdez credited a senior-heavy unit for being able to hold off challengers through an improved and competitive 31-6A schedule.

“Most of the girls came back from last year; we only graduated two girls from last year’s team,” Veteran ENHS coach Danny Valdez said. “So they knew they had what it takes and what it would take to win a district championship.”

Ortiz echoed those statements and explained how her team was able to stay calm.

“We did everything together as a team, in the beginning, we struggled a little but time went by and we started having that connection after a while,” Ortiz said.

Edinburg North will move on to face Harlingen High in the bi-district round. Edinburg Vela will face Brownsville Hanna, while third-place Donna North draws Harlingen South. Edinburg High matches up against 32-6A champions Los Fresnos.

Dogfight: La Joya Juarez-Lincoln upends McHi girls, snaps streak

By NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

LA JOYA — La Joya Juarez-Lincoln and McAllen High’s girls soccer teams met on the pitch for the second time this season Monday.

Just like the first clash of District 30-6A giants, the match did not disappoint. Even with a single goal in 80 minutes, the tempo was fast-paced and the skill level was an indication that RGV girls soccer is entering a new echelon.

La Joya Juarez-Lincoln (12-1, 35 pts) was able to hang on and shut out McHi 1-0 behind a goal scored 12 minutes in by sophomore Pricilia Hernandez on a free-kick.

With the win, the Huskies snapped the Bulldogs’ district winning streak at 50 games, dating back to March 2015.

Hernandez, who is one of Juarez-Lincoln’s key cogs on offense, wasn’t in action first game when McHi (12-1, 36 pts) outpaced the Huskies 3-0.

“Last game, I didn’t play. I was in the hospital because something about my muscles,” Hernandez said. “I had to rest for like a month. I haven’t been running a lot, so I’ve been out-conditioned.”

As the game went on, Hernandez had issues with cramps, which forced coaches to sub her out three different times, prompting accusations of time-wasting from the McHi crowd and sideline.

Juarez-Lincoln took advantage of their dominance on the ball from the first whistle. During the seventh minute, the Huskies already manufactured a chance inside of the box.

McHi keeper Lexi Gonzalez was able to keep Amber Segura from scoring early. During the ninth minute, Hernandez juggled the ball off her knee to control before wiring a shot just wide of Gonzalez.

With 28 minutes to play in the first half, the Huskies turned the early pressure into a lead. After a foul just outside of the area captain Ashley Segura and Hernandez stood over the ball waiting for the refs whistle.

Once it blew Ashley Segura teed the ball up for Hernandez, who hammered the ball off the hands of Gonzalez and into the net.

“Our first key was to work together as a team, like we have always (done) since the beginning of the season,” Ashley Segura said. “That has been our key to beat every team. We have a lot of individual talent but individually we couldn’t beat them. I think everything was done collectively as a team.”

McHi took some time to find offense.

A normally dominant Bulldogs group was challenged when sending long passes to their forwards. Freshman defender Stephanie Jimenez often won races to the ball and put a hard boot to clear the ball on many occasions.

Defense was important but goaltending was crucial as Juarez-Lincoln clung onto the lead. McHi junior Sophia Soto had the Bulldogs best chance of the first half.

With 11:30 to play in the first half, Huskies keeper Jenny Perez made a 1-on-1 save against Soto on a chance where the Juarez-Lincoln defender fell in the box.

Perez, who was celebrating a birthday, said she didn’t want to leave the parents’ night crowd down.

“It’s my birthday. I needed to do my best. I didn’t want them to score on me,” Perez said. “I got scared to be honest (on Soto’s shot). I needed to use my reflexes. I was like, ‘It can’t go in,’ so I went on my knees. It hit off my knees and it hit right off my knee and went out.”

As the game went on, McHi’s Ava Alaniz was the primary target as the Bulldogs pushed for a goal. The University of Houston commit is tough to take off the ball, but the Huskies were up for the challenge, poking the ball away or limiting space for the crafty forward.

In the final 15 minutes, McHi’s pressure reached a fever pitched.

First, a shot was blasted just high from in close, then Mallory Henderson was bumped inside of the penalty area, but the contact was not enough to draw a whistle.

The Bulldogs final effort came with five minutes, when Perez was forced to make two saves after she coughed up a rebound on a kick from distance. Soto was the forward in close that was denied.

Juarez-Lincoln is still a point behind McAllen High, but coach Rick Garza knows that a win over last year’s regional champion goes a long way in the team’s future.

“It’s huge,” Garza said. “When we’re able to compete against a very successful like McHi, go toe-to-toe with them and come out with a victory it’s a huge momentum builder, especially going into the playoffs. I asked our athletes since day one of our practices, ‘Do you want to be a team that’s just average or a team that’s above average?’ And every day that’s what we strive to work on.”

Rattlers ready: Sharyland High boys have the tools to build a run

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — It’s been three years since the Sharyland High boys soccer team was district champions. But when you’re a program with a star above your team’s crest to signify a state championship, sometimes your dreams are bigger than a regular-season trophy.

Senior goalkeeper Gabriel Tamez has backstopped his team to a 12-1 district record, while conceding only two goals against District 31-5A opponents.

Tamez, who doubles as a wide receiver/placekicker in the fall, joined his soccer family after saying goodbye to his friends on the football field after the Rattlers second-round playoff game loss.

“I’d like to give a lot of credit to these guys,” Tamez said. “I wasn’t with them in the preseason due to football but everything I heard and I saw these guys was working. They were all pushing for a goal a little bigger than just the district championship.”

Throughout district play, the Rattlers have performed like a group on a mission. After a strong showing in a 3-1 non-district loss to La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, Sharyland was dominant to begin district.

In their first five 31-5A matches, the Rattlers outscored their opponents 32-0, including a 10-0 win over crosstown rivals Sharyland Pioneer.

Perhaps Shary’s two seasons in the same district as perennial state power Valley View helped mold a stellar regular-season campaign. In those two years, the Tigers won all the head-to-head meetings, but twice the outcome was decided by just a goal, once requiring PKs.

“That’s top of Texas talent right there,” Tamez said. “Valley View is a machine of a team and we tied them in regular time. We saw what we can do it and it gave us hope for the future. Everyone was kind of brought up seeing those teams and playing against those teams.”

Team captain Alberto Martinez said that finishing on top of the district is a nice accomplishment, but only part of the mission.

As district reached the second time through, the opposition has played Sharyland High tighter most nights, but La Joya Palmview was the only team to snatch a win – in penalty kicks.

“I think it’s great to be able to win district. To be able to say that you’re the best team in the district is something special, especially if you haven’t done it in three years,” Martinez said. “Yeah, it’s a great achievement and we have to take it step-by-step but it feels great to know we’re the best in the district.”

Martinez and Tamez, however, have been a part of teams in the past two seasons that had to face tough 32-5A qualifiers. Two years ago they lost to Brownsville Lopez in the bi-district round, 2-0, and last year they fell to Brownsville Porter, 2-0, in the same round.

“I think we know that if we win district we can’t let that affect our mindset; that we’ve already won everything,” Martinez said. “We haven’t won anything yet, so I think as long as we keep our feet on the ground and stay humble…take things round by round, we shouldn’t have too many problems.”

The Rattlers will be matched up with the Brownsville-heavy district in the first round again. If the playoffs started today head coach Rev Hernandez’s team would face Brownsville Pace, which is in fourth place in District 32-5A with an 8-5 record.

Hernandez believes this year’s group has more toughness because of their age and experience.

“I think mentally they’re mature,” Rev Hernandez said. “I know we’ve had teams in the past, but we always had a mixture. Right now we have 11 seniors and it does make a lot of difference. Some of our guys don’t have a lot of size, but their bodies are mature and you can tell with their speed, the way they kick the ball and take control.”

Despite mentioning his team’s size, Sharyland is graced with a 6-foot-4-inch sweeper, Alejandro Castello, as the last line of defense before the keeper.

Tamez in net says that his team’s strong defense will become even more important as the games turn into single-elimination battles.

“For us, the defense has been a big thing all season, I think we’ve only allowed six goals,” Tamez said. “It’s all thanks to those guys. They understand their role and they’re proud of it. With them back there I feel like our team’s dominant. Teams haven’t been able to reach us and that’s going to be a really big key and factor when it comes to the playoff games.”

Vela girls surge: SaberCats turn on the jets to cruise past Bobcats

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG — Edinburg Vela weathered the storm from Edinburg High early to take control in Monday morning’s grudge match between sister schools and District 31-6A playoff teams.

The SaberCats scored four unanswered goals to win 4-0 at Richard R. Flores Stadium. Vela’s win serves as payback after losing to the Bobcats on Feb. 15 in the first round of district play.

That meeting, almost a month ago, was the last time Vela lost before starting a six-game win streak.

“It’s a rivalry, and, of course they were going to come back aggressive because they beat us the first time,” junior Dayana Cantu said. “We had to put some goals in and not go to penalties.”

Vela improves to 9-2 in district play and sits in second place, just two points behind 31-6A leaders Edinburg North. EHS falls to 7-4 with 21 points, a point behind third-place Donna North — the Bobcats’ next opponent.

Edinburg High showed a lot of positive qualities early by keeping the ball for a greater share than Vela for about 20 minutes after the whistle.

With 23:55 to play, SaberCats keeper Joanna Corona nearly gifted the Bobcats their first score after bobbling a shot at her. A pack of EHS forwards and midfielders nearly pounced on the loose ball, but Corona corralled it in time to evade the threat.

Regina Monroy almost found the net for the Bobcats, but Corona was up to the challenge by batting the shot postmarked for the top shelf. Senior Leah Sanchez had the final Grade A scoring opportunity for EHS before Vela found their footing. The small-but-mighty No. 10 had space alone in front of the goalie, but shot the ball wide on an early touch.

Cantu took matters into her own hands by scoring two goals 90 seconds apart. On a corner kick with eight minutes remaining in the first half, Cantu was in the right place at the right time and put a knee on the ball to beat the keeper.

“She crossed it in and I just ran into it,” Cantu said. “I tried to put my foot on it, but it touched my knee.”

With six and a half to play in the half, Cantu scored her third goal in two games to give the SaberCats a 2-0 halftime advantage. Her far-side shot went post and in to give not only a second score, but a psychological edge as well.

“We have so many people that can play so many different spots; we’re very lucky to have such a variety of players,” defender Danya Selber said.

EHS failed to create much after the goals started finding the net for Vela.

SaberCats coach Americo Cortez admitted that his team was a bit slower to find their form early than the opposition during the rare morning start.

“We started slow and we struggled at the beginning. We had two injuries right away and our girls were not focusing. We started not running,” Cortez said. “We looked like we were not awake. We started passing the ball and pressuring the ball until we scored; from there the girls decided to play the game and it was over.”

In the second half, two more SaberCats got in on the action. First, when Krystin Calvillo put plenty of leg on a ball from distance after intercepting a clearance from EHS’s goalie.

Her blast was hard and high but the trajectory of the ball was just right to fly over the head of the keeper, who was off her line and into the net.

With 27:30 to play the Bobcats goalie and her defenders were scrambling to clear the ball following a corner kick. That’s when Selber rushed in to put her head to the ball. No one was able to stop the rolling ball and fourth score.

Selber, a junior, explained her team was able to pull away late because they are the older unit less prone to being rattled.

The Bobcats do field a freshman- and sophomore-heavy roster, with a dash of senior presence.

“A lot of them (EHS) are new players, so toward the end of the game we just had more of the connection and more of the experience with each other to finish it off,” Selber said.

She explained why she was so happy to pitch in on the score sheet.

“As a defender, I play in the back, sometimes holding, sometimes attacking but I always go up on corner,” she said. “It’s a nice way to get us pumped because we’re defending the goals — not scoring them.”
