McAllen High girls soccer sets standard in win over McAllen Memorial

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

McALLEN — McAllen High knocked on the door the entire first half. And during the final 10 minutes before the halftime break, the Bulldogs knocked the door down on their way to a 4-1 District 30-6A win over McAllen Memorial on Tuesday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

McHi had both defenders and forwards pushing forward to chase the game’s first goal. The first shot on target came from defender Emily Gurwitz.

“We were definitely getting back into the groove of things. It’s been a while since we played a tough team like Memorial,” Gurwitz said. “Once we got our offense going, it kind of picked up from there. The whole back line did a great job of starting the offense from the back.”

McHi (2-0) kept possession for most of the first half, sending forward plenty of kicks but few that threatened Memorial’s defensive structure.

Memorial (2-1) defenders Geo Hernandez and Leilani Sanchez were strong to keep outside probes by McAllen away from danger.

Before the half was complete, McHi’s efforts at goal began causing stress for Memorial keeper Victoria Tanguma.

A corner kick at the 33-minute mark started the scoring. The kick bounced around in the 6-yard box before Paola Alvarez put the ball in.

“I just decided to go straight for the goal,” Alvarez said. “This is what we’ve been practicing: corner kicks, getting to the ball first, and just scoring. It obviously showed.”

Three minutes later, with the Bulldogs pushing forward, Zoe Flores was fouled inside of the penalty area, earning her team a kick from the penalty spot.

Even with all the weapons McHi has on offense, Gurwitz was called on to take the shot. The conversion to make the score 2-0 meant a little extra for the junior who recalls a costly mistake during her first season.

“My freshman year, we actually tied Memorial, and I had a handball in the box, and the girl finished it,” Gurwitz said. “We ended up tying in PKs, but it felt really, really good to get redemption from that.”

Another Bulldogs defender, Westyn Henderson, made a handful of determined runs in both halves, leading to near chances but not a tally of her own.

“It’s always better to have 11 players or 10 players than just five who are supposed to be playing offense,” Gurwitz said. “Whenever we see the opportunity on defense, your first look should be forward, rather than out or back or whatever.”

Ten minutes into the second half, Memorial’s improved play was rewarded, as they found a goal on a slow roller that Viviana Cruz sent home in a spot the goalie had just vacated.

The game reached its most tense moments in the 10 minutes following Memorial’s tally, when the Mustangs were pushing for an equalizer but coming up short of breaking through a second time.

With 11 minutes to play in the game, the Bulldogs bought some insurance. A cutback dribble on the edge of the penalty box gave Melanie Saldana room to attack the net. Her initial shot didn’t go in, but Sophia Soto was in the right spot to hammer home her third goal in two district games.

“I think as soon we get something going, it gets bigger and better on from there. We all gain more confidence when the ball hits the back of the net the first time,” Soto said. “Coach always says that it’s important to look for the rebound. The defenders around, you need to make sure you separate yourself from them.”

McHi’s Ava Alaniz used a similar cutback move as Saldana and finished her own chance to make the score 4-1 with three minutes to play.

Both teams played with an edge, which turned up a notch after McHi’s Miranda Munoz and Memorial’s Sanchez collided violently with about 15 minutes to play in the first half. No goal was scored on the play, but both players were shaken up and fans reacted on both sides.

The fans shouting, drum line in the stands and rough play were a constant reminder of how much the crosstown rivalry means to both squads.

“It means the world. I told the girls, ‘This is why we play high school soccer,’” Pat Arney said. “These are the girls you see all the time, and we want bragging rights. We haven’t lost to them in two years, and we want that to continue. They’re a hard team. They’re good team. … When you can get a win against a quality team like Memorial we’re really happy.”

Sharyland Pioneer uses goaltending, defense to hold on for win in penalty kicks against Sharyland High

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

MISSION — Sharyland Pioneer goalie Yulissa Acuña only faced one quality chance in the first half against Sharyland High. She was much busier but up to the task in the second half, extending the game to penalty kicks, where the Diamondbacks prevailed 4-2 after a scoreless regulation in the meeting of undefeated teams.
The Rattlers’ onslaught of offense after the halftime break was not a surprise. As time ticked away in the final 40 minutes, the pressure seemed ready to boil over into a goal, but the visiting Diamondbacks (5-0, 14 points) didn’t break.
In the first half, Pioneer’s Nikki Cuellar made plays and found attackers. The best chance for the Diamondbacks was a loose ball that was a light tap from being sent home for a goal. Sharyland’s Elise Townsend had other ideas, clearing the ball.
The catalyst to Sharyland’s late attack was the duo of freshman Xochitl Nguma and senior forward Kaitie Watson.
Watson was as dangerous as advertised. Entering play Friday, she had 10 goals in just four district games. Nguma was crucial in getting the ball to Watson, finding her a few times in scoring position or at the start of a run.
Acuña, a senior, has been on the varsity squad since her freshman season and was prepared for everything Watson threw at her.
“I knew what she does, so I told my defense what to do, and then I knew where she was shooting, and I would cover that spot,” Acuña said. “It’s a challenging job, but I was able to accomplish it, thank God.”
With 24 minutes to play, Watson sprinted down the right side of the field, set her feet and picked her spot in close. Her try was denied by Acuña, who had already dropped to her knees, selling out to make the save.
The goalkeeper said she went down “too early,” but the save was key all the same. Watson and the Rattlers sent more attackers forward late as they pushed for all three available points.
Through all the tense moments, Acuña was pleased to see more action and become an active part of the game in the second half.
“I was able to move my feet more, be more focused,” Acuña said. “My defense also did a great job. They stopped a bunch of balls.”
The tension was thick in penalty kicks, but the tone was set when Townsend was denied on her attempt to beat Acuña to her right. The Pioneer keeper said penalty kicks were something she focused on improving during tournament play.
The Diamondbacks left room for the Rattlers to tie the game when Lauren Guerra missed off the left post.
The attempt from Sharyland’s Mariana Barragan smashed off the crossbar and out, setting up the game-winner for Amanda Tyrrell, who made no mistake.
“Our goalie did amazing. I’m so proud of her, especially in the shootout,” Tyrrell said. “We knew how Kaitie played. We knew that she was going to take shots, so we made sure that we were always going to stop her, no matter what.”
Tyrrell was happy that her team pulled out a win despite getting the worse of the run of play in the second half, proving the group can earn points in different ways.
“No matter what, if we’re not going to have possession or are going to have possession, we’re going to make sure we get the win, because we know we’re the better team at the end of it,” Tyrrell said.
Pioneer coach J.J. Lopez attributed the second-half play to adjustments Sharyland High coach Mario Ribera made to create more offense.
“We thought we were doing well, so we weren’t going to change a whole lot,” Lopez said. “They made the adjustments because obviously, they felt we were getting the run of play. In soccer, you just have to adjust on the fly, because there’s no timeouts.”
Lopez noted the intensity that seems to resonate around the district rivalry.
“Any time you come and play here at Sharyland, you know they’re going to have a big crowd. They take a lot of pride in all their athletics,” Lopez said. “We like to think our parents take a lot of pride, too, and the atmosphere feels like a playoff game every time we face them. These are the type of games that prepare you for the postseason.”
Both teams entered the game with identical 4-0 records in 31-5A play. With the win, the Diamondbacks have accumulated 14 points while the Rattlers are a point behind with 13.
“If you can’t get them in regulation, it’s important just to get them in PKs so we go a point ahead of them,” Tyrrell said. “We’re going to make sure to beat them in regulation next round.”

Sharyland Pioneer’s Trevor Heath growing on the fly

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

MISSION — When he was a middle schooler, Sharyland Pioneer sophomore Trevor Heath thought he’d end up in full pads playing football for the Diamondbacks. Two years into high school, Heath is submerged in his new passion, winning gold in the pool and trimming time.
“I never really thought about swimming ever,” Heath said at practice this week. “I was in football for about two years. I always thought that was going to be my niche. My dad just said, ‘Hey, go ahead and try this,’ so I got in the pool, and I liked it. It was fun, and I didn’t really stop. It just kind of grew on me.”
Heath didn’t head straight for the sport’s popular events. Instead, he excelled at the most grueling races in a meet.
As a freshman, Heath won gold in the 200-yard individual medley, which includes each of the four swimming strokes, and the endurance-demanding 500 freestyle. This year, he won two more individual golds in those same events at the District 31-5A meet in Mission. Heath will attempt to advance to state as the Region 8-5A swim meet unfolds today and Saturday at the CCISD Natatorium in Corpus Christi.
The sophomore said that his dedication to his craft included trips to College Station for different camps.
“I started out by doing pure technique camps,” Heath said. “Then, I started doing more of the conditioning camps, and that’s what really got me to where I was. Even though during those condition camps I was having a really hard time to keep up with those people. I was swimming with people from all around. It pushed me to where I am now.”
The Pioneer boys swimming team is the benefactor of Heath’s ascension. During Heath’s freshman season, he was part of Pioneer’s first district championship team in program history, edging out Sharyland High by 11 points.
Heath swam the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 16.47 seconds at the 2017 district meet. This season, he completed the race in 2:06.75.
Pioneer swimming coach Arnold Perez said his success can be wholly attributed to his work ethic.
“He’s not afraid to work,” Perez said. “I’ve had a lot of kids in my career that are hard workers, but him and (Andrew) Adkins are a different breed. If I cancel practice, they’re mad. If something happens, weather comes in, whatever happens, the pool breaks down, they are honestly upset. They’ll come in on their own time on Sundays to swim. Just unheard of stuff.”
Heath’s freshman 500 freestyle times were 5:21.67 at the district meet and 5:19.58 at the regional meet. This year at district, he trimmed his time down to 5:02.11.
“I’ve definitely just been training a lot harder to get to where I am now,” Heath said. “I’ve done more camps, things like that, to get me ready for this year’s competition.”
Now, he’s quicker, and the Diamondbacks seem to be following suit. They won the district meet by 37 points over Sharyland High.
Adkins, a junior, won the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, pitching in 18 individual points toward district championship.
“We had the target on our back, and everyone was trying to catch us, instead of the other way around,” Adkins said about coming into district as favorites.
Being a favorite heading into the regional meet is more difficult, but that’s exactly where Adkins is positioned in the breaststroke, boasting the top seed time at 1:04.11.
“There will always be a surprise up there, because everybody is going to drop time, of course,” Adkins said. “Nobody’s going to stay the same or add time.”
Heath is seeded outside of state qualifying positions in both events, albeit by mere seconds.
He enters the day seeded 1.65 seconds behind second place in the IM and four seconds behind a pair of Flour Bluff seniors in the 500 free.
Just a few days before leaving to Corpus Christi for the regional meet, Heath was in good spirits about the upcoming challenge.
“I enjoy the competition. Even if I lose, I love swimming against other people,” Heath said. “It just lets me know where I’m at and where I need to be to go on further. I have two more years in my high school career, and I’m so excited to see where I can go and do the best I can. I’m really hoping to see if I can final in state.”

Edinburg Vela girls soccer jump past Edinburg High

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

EDINBURG — Edinburg Vela wanted to send an early message in District 31-6A play, and the SaberCats succeeded with a 3-1 win over Edinburg High on Tuesday night at Richard Flores Stadium.

With both teams coming off of losses in penalty kicks, points were at a premium for the rival campuses trying to create early traction.

“We needed a good mentality to start off. We came off with only one point, and we were in fifth place, according to our coach,” freshman Taylor Campbell said. “So it was just important that we started off well, got everything moving fast, just so we can get the momentum going and score.”

Out of the gates, Vela forward Odessa Leal was an important part of the team’s offense. She looked for teammates making runs forward and spearheaded the SaberCats’ early possession.

Both teams had some chances early, but the higher quality opportunities belonged to the SaberCats, and they found a breakthrough 12:30 into the game.

Krystin Calvillo launched a 35-yard shot over the outstretched arms of Edinburg High’s goalkeeper.

“One point was not enough for last week. We needed those three points for today,” Vela coach Americo Cortez said. “We were facing a very good team — Edinburg High. We knew they were going to come hard. They’re aggressive. They were never going to stop running, and that’s what we did. We lost our style of playing for a certain amount of time in the field.”

With 16:11 to play, the offense started to click more consistently, and it was Calvillo’s turn to provide the passing. She made a perfect pass to Ayssa Arevalo on a two-versus-one break, and the goalie had no chance to make the stop.

The Bobcats had trouble pushing the ball into attacking position the entire game thanks to the stout defensive edge play by the SaberCats’ outside backs. Cortez said he changed to just three deep defenders to create more offense.

Kassandra Rodriguez, Brianna De Leon, Dayana Cantu and Danya Selber shared time on the field, and each player was called on to clear balls and choke off passing lanes.

“My defenders have always been good. Every time they play, they got to two or three offsides,” Cortez, a first-year coach, said. “Today, we started with a line of three instead of a line of four. They knew they had to play together, and they were tough. They were aggressive with the ball, and they were good. I’m really proud of them.”

“Now that we have our (new) coach, he’s been helping us out a lot with trying to not let that ball get past us,” Kassandra Rodriguez said. “We clear up the ball in order for the forwards to get the ball and our offense to do their thing.”

Vela had one more goal up its sleeve in the second half, and it came off the foot of Campbell.

She received a pass in traffic just outside of the box and made a few more touches before wiring a shot just above the goalie’s reach and below the crossbar.

“I have high standards for myself. I’m just working, hopefully trying to get leading scorer,” Campbell said. “If anything, I’m just trying to score in every game. I have a goal for myself, and I’m trying to achieve that.”

Edinburg High ended Ashley De La Cruz’s shutout with a late goal by Debanhi Rodriguez.

With four of a possible six points through two games, Edinburg Vela is looking for more. Not only in terms of point production, but also how close they are playing to their potential.

“We’re thinking about playoffs right now,” Cortez said. “We’re thinking about going hard at the playoffs. It’s a team, we want to go up high. The way we’re playing right now, we’re not at the level to get into that.”

McAllen Memorial girls, McAllen High boys keep swimming titles

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

McALLEN — Another year, another heated battle between McAllen High and McAllen Memorial for District 30-6A swimming supremacy.

“Competition is really everything, especially whenever there’s a little bit of rivalry and history behind it,” McAllen High’s Max Saenz said. “Not only that, but competing against your friends is one of the best things you can do, just to keep yourself in it and never quit.”

The final standings were a repeat of last year, as the Bulldogs boys and Mustangs girls were lifted by elite swimmers on their way to repeat titles on Saturday at the McAllen ISD Natatorium at McAllen Rowe.

Saenz had a stellar meet, earning gold in both of his relays and both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.

“I felt like I had the best opportunity to not only medal at regionals but grab four firsts, hopefully,” Saenz said about switching from the butterfly to 100 freestyle. “I just think it’s the best outcome, being my senior year.”

Saenz finished the 50 freestyle in 22.41 seconds. In the 100 freestyle, he swam a 49.24, edging out his Bulldogs teammate James Moore by about half of a second (49.85).

“It was a lot of work that went into it, changing the events and going from (butter)fly to free, although I still do both of those events as my majors,” Saenz said. “Just a simple little switch. It wasn’t too big of a deal, but it was a change that had to be made.”

Shaine Casas, a Texas A&M commit, won the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.57, off his own best but enough for a pool record.

“It was a little slow, but it wasn’t terrible,” Casas said. “I choked on water the last lap. I don’t even know how it happened. It’s really rare it happened, but it happened twice today.”

Casas swam the 100 backstroke as his second individual event, switching out the 200 IM that he swam on his way to a silver medal at UIL state last season.

“It wasn’t really like a major decision,” Casas said. “I can swim whatever I want to. I kind of want to redeem myself, because I lost sophomore year. I wasn’t expected to win, but in my mind, (I was).”

Mario De Leon won the 500 freestyle for McHi while fellow Bulldog Gwanghoon Park earned bronze. McAllen Memorial’s Alan Cortez finished sandwiched between them for the silver.

Stacia Benitez and Casas were named female and male swimmer of the meet, respectively, for their four-gold performances.

In the girls competition, Memorial had big meets from some of the usual suspects that have been in the winner’s circle before.

Avia Guerra won the 100 and 200 freestyle. Benitez won the backstroke and butterfly by more than two seconds each. LiLi Bradford took gold in the 200 IM with a time of 2:30.83.

“I’ve been training hard all year long, but the week before district is crucial, because it’s the last week you train as hard as you can before you taper,” Benitez said.

Benitez was part of the medley relay that included Guerra, Sofia Salvo and Megan Blevins. Guerra is a freestyle specialist but swims the butterfly in the relay to ensure the team has its best chance to win. The Mustangs (2:01.11) out-touched the Bulldogs (2:01.82) by less than a full second to claim gold.

“I swim the fly on the medley, because even though it’s not my best stroke, it’s about using our combined power,” Guerra said. “We don’t all get to swim what we want, but it’s just all about doing what’s best for the team.”

The combined power of McAllen Memorial turned into a 170-151 win over McHi for the district trophy.

“I think it’s just when all of us come together and just really give it all our effort,” Guerra said. “Some of the other meets we may be tired, we may be out of shape, but at this one, we make sure to give it our all because we know it may be the last time we all swim together.”

Courtney Crocker and Alanah Moreno from McAllen High won gold in the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle, respectively.

McAllen Rowe girls, a usual challenger in the district meet, won the 400 freestyle relay for the team’s lone gold after graduating a strong group in 2017.

The Region 8-6A meet takes place next weekend at the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center in Brownsville.
