Weslaco High loses to Laredo United South in area playoff matchup

NATHANIEL MATA| THE MONITOR

ROMA — Weslaco High and Laredo United South both got off to sluggish starts in their Class 6A area playoff game on Friday, but United South overcame the early funk and advanced to the regional quarterfinals with a 38-30 win.

The Panthers will say goodbye to a stellar senior class that has been a part of six consecutive district titles under coach Griselda Fino.

“It’s great to represent Weslaco, especially playing for Fino. She’s a great coach,” senior Briana Peña said. “The seniors, we’ve all played together for four years. They just kept playing tenaciously. The chemistry we had, it’s going to be hard to let go.”

The teams combined for 15 points during the first quarter. Defense was paramount, and neither team shot the ball well.

Weslaco center Illiyah Cantu opened the scoring with her putback layup after Emily Saenz attempted a shot that rimmed out. Weslaco jumped out to a 9-2 lead after Peña converted a 3-point play.

Weslaco’s defense was aggressive, forcing four first-quarter turnovers.

“It was a low-scoring game. It was a really defensive game. It was really physical out there,” Peña said. “It was just a matter of who wanted it more. I don’t think a lot of shots were falling for us. A lot of shots were rolling out for us. It just happens. It ended up happening, unfortunately, tonight.”

Peña scored five points on 2-of-8 shooting during the opening frame but didn’t sink another field goal the rest of the night.

United South turned up the pressure on both sides of the ball to start the second quarter. Weslaco gave up two turnovers in the first two minutes of the second, contributing to a 7-0 run.

United South center Evelyn Cruz had five points in the 14-point United South quarter.
Weslaco couldn’t get on the score sheet in the frame until 3 minutes and 30 seconds remained before halftime.

“We had a good start, but I think toward the second half, when they started pressing, trapping, I think we had a little bit of trouble,” Saenz said. “Once we started getting the hang of and attacking the basket, I think we should have capitalized on that and kept attacking. Again, our shots weren’t falling.”

The Saenz-Cantu connection was Weslaco’s lone silver lining in the quarter. Cantu finished with 11 points to lead the Panthers, while Saenz had six.

The third quarter was another momentum swing, this time in favor of Weslaco High.

Saenz made two free throws to tie the game at 18. She also made a slick move to evade Cruz and put the Panthers up 24-23. That was the last time Weslaco led.

“It was definitely something that we worked on — to make sure that we had our defensive assignments down,” Fino said. “I think we did a good job, the first half anyway, (of) doing the little things — keeping them off the boards, making them take difficult shots. We were able to take a lead here and there. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to contain it.”

Untimely fouls, unforced turnovers and poor interior shooting doomed Weslaco in the final frame. Saenz and Jada Lopez had baskets in the fourth, but Weslaco only managed six points to United South’s 11.

“We have a lot to be proud of,” Saenz said. “Things didn’t go our way this game, but I think it was just a great run. We came together as a team every single game. At practice, we were all on each other, pushing each other. The thing about this team is the senior group. We’ve worked hard. I think everyone pushed each other, and it’s going to be a memorable year.”

A senior and last season’s Monitor All-Area Player of the Year, Peña was in tears after the loss but was able to recognize how special her four seasons were.

“It was a great ride,” Peña said. “We went through a lot of adversity, and we kept fighting. It is what it is. Everything happens for a reason, and all the glory goes to God.”
“To maintain that level of excellence is unheard of,” Fino said. “I’m just beyond proud. Of course, the ball didn’t bounce our way today, but it doesn’t diminish or take away the fact that I’m very blessed one, to be their coach, and two, proud to be their coach.”

McAllen Rowe wrestling turning missteps into power moves

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

McALLEN — A year ago, as a sophomore, McAllen Rowe wrestler Omar Anguiana was in the third-place match at the district tournament. He watched the wrestler who beat him in overtime, Dillion Tovalu of Edinburg North, go on to win the 195-pound championship.

Anguiana didn’t have his shot at redemption at the regional tournament. He was eliminated in the lower bracket before a rematch could occur.

This season, Anguiana has done a lot of growing up, according to Rowe coach Arlan Garza. That growth resulted in Anguiana standing on the podium as a district champion after beating Edinburg North’s Brandon Rich-Avalos.

Heading into the Class 6A Region-IV tournament this weekend at the Blossom Activity Center in San Antonio, Anguiana owns a 19-4 record, with all of his losses coming against out-of-area wrestlers.

“The difference between last year’s tournament and this year’s was the competition was a lot tougher,” Anguiana said. “It just made me realize that I needed to get better in my technique and that I needed to get stronger.”

Garza said Anguiana’s ability to handle big moments was the key to reaching the next level.

“It all came together at the perfect time,” Garza said. “He showed poise. He showed experience at district. He had some tough matches, but he was calm, under control, and he took care of business.”

Garza said using defeat as a tool to get better is crucial.

“I always think tough losses are better for us than big wins,” Garza said. “I’m talking about losses to stud wrestlers. The losses that you try to get back in the postseason, which is where we are now. You’re forced to grow not only in a wrestling perspective but on a personal level, as well.”

Anguiana experienced one of those humbling defeats against Bryce Dockins of Klein Collins High School, who is ranked No. 17 according to WrestlingTexas.com.

Anguiana said the moment got to him — a problem he and Garza feel Anguiana has conquered.

“What I learned the most from those four losses was that I needed to be smarter with my wrestling,” Anguiana said. “What happens with me is that when I’m tired, I tend to make dumb mistakes. I’ve learned to wrestle smart and stay behind the guy and start stacking up points.”

Experience molds youth

Rowe is sending eight qualifiers to the regional tournament, but the group consists of only two first-time regional qualifiers.
Anguiana spearheads the group as the Warriors’ lone district winner, and Garza is excited at the progress of sophomore Petey Lozano, who wrestles at 138 pounds.

Lozano qualified for regionals as a freshman, and Garza said that weekend was a spark that pushed him to come back on a mission in his second season.

“For me, I didn’t like how I ended up last year,” Lozano said. “It just pushed me more to work hard this year. It kind of set fuel to my fire. That’s the only way we’re going to get better. This whole team, we push each other to make each other greater.”

Garza said having such a large group traveling to compete and support can go a long way in San Antonio.

“I think it’s huge,” Garza said. “The mentality we’ve adapted here at Rowe wrestling has always been priding ourselves to get a good amount of kids at regionals every year. It’s always been the name in front of the chest.”

Teaching moments

Taly Cano, Rowe’s 170-pound wrestler, is ranked No. 8 in his weight class, according to WrestlingTexas.com. The senior has come a long way from where he started, according to his coaches. He’s of the mindset that losses in big tournaments can serve as lessons.

“I barely started last year. Since then, I’ve noticed that the intensity has really sped up,” Cano said. “We’ve been working hard because we took some heavy losses last year at regionals.”

Cano finished third at this year’s district meet, but the group is convinced he has more to give this weekend.

“You look back at your matches and think about what you did wrong,” Cano said. “You come in the next day in practice and clean it up.”

Another rare senior among Rowe’s young group is Leo Villegas. The soft-spoken, 160-pound wrestler who listens to banda music to pump himself up is grateful he’s able to pass along knowledge.

“It’s been a pleasure to teach the young guys, because when I was a freshman, they threw me. They did whatever to me, because I was barely a freshman,” Leo Villegas said. “I learned from the older guys, and now I’m doing the same.”

Garza feels like the foundation has been laid. Now, it’s up to his wrestlers to compete how they’ve shown they can and not let the bright lights become a factor.

“I always tell these kids, ‘Pressure doesn’t exist. It’s something you put on yourself,’” Garza said. “If you go out there and wrestle the way you can and don’t worry about the moment, you’re going to be just fine.”

Rowe wrestling and a bevy of 6A regional qualifiers will compete at the Blossom Center, while the 5A competition will take place today and Saturday at the Delco Activity Center in Austin.

McAllen High swimmer Casas aiming for state gold

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

MCALLEN — McAllen High senior Shaine Casas doesn’t have a weak stroke. He has the luxury of swimming whichever race he wants and still reaching the podium, even at the UIL state swim meet.

He will compete today and Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin for the last time as a high school student, with two individual events left to capture the elusive gold that he’s strived for.

“I’ve been pretty excited,” Casas said. “I can’t stop repeating to my friends how pumped I am to swim this weekend. I just want a shot at redemption and, hopefully, to bring home two golds, not one.”

The Texas A&M-bound swimmer was narrowly out-touched in both the 100-yard butterfly and 200 individual medley as a junior. This year, he’s swimming the butterfly again, plus he’s adding a throwback — the 100 backstroke. Casas received his first state medal in the event as a sophomore, claiming bronze with a time of 49.42 seconds.

After sweeping his events at the district meet, Casas said he can swim just about any stroke, but he wanted to give the backstroke another shot after almost surprising the field as a sophomore.

His decorated career has transcended UIL competition. In the last calendar year, he earned gold with the U.S. junior national team, plus a silver and two bronzes at the Speedo Junior National Championships. In November, he inked his national letter of intent to swim for the Aggies in the Southeastern Conference.

For Casas, state gold is the final box to check off his impressive to-do list.

“It’s just one of those things I want to prove to myself that I can do it. I just haven’t had my shot yet,” Casas said. “It just shows that I need a little more work. There’s always going to be someone better than you, so you just have to keep that in mind when you train.”
For the first time in three trips to Austin for the state swim meet, Casas is seeded first heading into one of his events — the backstroke, with a time of 47.52. He owns the second-quickest qualifying time in the butterfly, but says he hasn’t swum his fastest in that stroke yet.

“State is more of a mental game than anything,” Casas said. “When it comes down to it, it just matters about place. I’m just going to race. I don’t necessarily care what time I go, as long as I win I’ll be happy.”

One of those mind games includes getting into technical suits, or tech suits, as the postseason progresses. The swimsuits are the most aerodynamic material and design available for competition.

“The tech suits, they do help,” Casas said. “The mental edge is huge, but there is scientific proof it causes less drag. And just being able to say, ‘I have a tech suit on. I’m ready to swim fast.’ That’ll get you psyched up and ready to go.”

Casas has had the internal drive to claim gold, and the Bulldogs have been under the direction of first-year coach Albino Cisneros.

Casas will be joined by individual qualifiers Jace Lyon, Maximo Saenz and Mikey Moore, as well as the Bulldogs 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams. McHi is also sending one girls swimmer — Courtney Crocker.

Saenz is qualified in the two quickest individual races, the 50 and 100 freestyles. He said he feels extra excited about his senior state meet thanks to a new approach to training, including more specialized workouts.

“The excitement is definitely there. I don’t know so much about the nerves, because this is going to be my fourth year going back,” Saenz said. “I think it’s the different training. It’s really just more training for ourselves. We have our own perspectives on our own bodies, and we get to work around that.”

Cisneros, who came to McHi after a fruitful tenure at Los Fresnos, said switching schools was a tough decision, but the change has been rewarded with his team’s success in the pool.

“They’re naturally gifted athletes, especially in Shaine’s case. I can’t take credit for that,” Cisneros said. “It’s been a good year, a fun year. I knew they had the potential for success. I knew I could lead them to a regional championship. Now, the goal is to get Shaine gold at State.”

Cisneros said it’s not far-fetched to expect the best out of Casas this weekend.

“Since the first day I met him, I knew he was going to win gold at state,” Cisneros said. “Just his positive attitude, his way of thinking, and throughout the whole season he would make comments like, ‘I’m ready. I’m ready.’ You really can’t coach that.”

Weslaco High softball runs over McAllen Memorial

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

WESLACO — Weslaco High needed only a sliver of opportunity to capitalize on early mistakes and hammer McAllen Memorial 11-0 in four innings Tuesday on opening night for both teams.

McAllen Memorial almost escaped the bottom of the first inning with no damage and a scoreless tie. Instead, with two outs, a strikeout turned into opportunity for the Panthers, who used a five-run inning to jump-start their offensive night.

“It was the first non-district game, and we were going to come in and give it our all,” Weslaco junior Ashley Sada said. “Once we started scoring runs, we got the momentum going and kept scoring runs and making contact.”

Sada was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts while also going 3 for 3 and collecting 5 RBIs as a hitter.

In the bottom of the first with one runner on base and Audrey Escamilla at the plate, Memorial’s Kayla Dow threw a pitch well inside that Escamilla chased for strike three. The Panthers cleanup hitter swung and missed, but the ball bounced off her arm and away from the catcher’s reach.

A case of opening-day jitters could have been to blame when none of the players moved on the live ball until yells came from the crowd and dugouts.

Escamilla’s speed was too much for Mustangs catcher Sasha Uribe to record the out. Weslaco’s Alyssa Escamilla scored the game’s first run on the play.

Five more batters reached the plate in the half-inning, and the runs piled up. Sada hit a single but reached third base as the Mustangs weren’t able to get Laurynn DeAnda out at home plate.

Amberly Barrera, the inning’s eighth hitter, reached base thanks to an error. Sada touched home to make the score 5-0 on the unearned run.

The start was a tough break for Dow, a sophomore who played shortstop last year but is transitioning to the rubber for the Mustangs.

Memorial coach Audra Benavidez said the game was a learning experience against solid hitting for her relatively young group and 10th-grade starter.

“We like to reassure her,” Benavides said of Dow. “That first half-inning, we told them exactly what it was. We should have been out of the inning with no runs. She needs to go through it so she knows what’s going on. She needs to know that we have confidence in her ,because we do.”

Dow was one of only two Mustangs to reach base with a hit.

Along with Sada, Weslaco leadoff hitter Helen Gonzalez made solid contact at the plate, notching a single and a triple in the game.

Alyssa Escamilla reached base all three at-bats with three singles, including two of the bunt variety.

Sada was pleased with her team’s ability to pounce on opportunities and turn them into production.

“Whenever we have the opportunity, we always come through,” Sada said. “It feels amazing to do what I planned to do on both hitting and pitching. Hopefully, it keeps going.”

Panthers coach Mario Rodriguez was hardly shocked that his pitcher tossed the shutout in the first game of the year.

“She had a good outing,” Rodriguez said. “I guess we take it for granted that we expect that from her or whoever is pitching for us. They all know they had a good defense behind them.”

The defensive player who stood out was third basemen Luna, who made a diving play before throwing out the Memorial batter.

“It’s still early in the season,” Rodriguez said. “All the teams are trying to put the pieces to the puzzle together. What I liked was the fact that situations presented themselves, and we took advantage of them.”
