Cervantes, Padilla in championship hunt at wrestling state meet

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

McAllen High’s Serna Cervantes will put her 47-0 record on the line today against Xochitl Mota-Pettis of Klein High School, who owns a 56-0 record. The two clash for a chance to advance to the gold medal match of the UIL state wrestling tournament at the Berry Center in Cypress.

After an intense day of wrestling against stout competition, the senior Cervantes and Sharyland Pioneer’s Mia Padilla represent the RGV’s only two competitors remaining in the championship brackets. The Valley sent 41 athletes to the state meet.

Cervantes reached the Class 6A 128-pound semifinal after earning pins over Katy Seven Lakes’s Sophie Stegenga and Coppell’s Allie Baudhuin on Friday.

Pioneer’s Padilla is also fighting to reach the gold medal match today. She won her first-round match via pin of Prosper’s Julianna Baughter and then picked up a 5-2 decision over Bryan’s Desire Campos.

Padilla, a sophomore, will face Class 5A Region III champion Danielle Walker of Waller in an attempt to qualify for the 138-pound state title match.

Valley wrestlers in both the boys and girls tournaments will have an opportunity to medal and earn points for their teams in the consolation brackets.

PSJA Memorial wins home rematch against Edinburg Economedes

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

ALAMO — PSJA Memorial’s Jose Acosta was in alone against Edinburg Economedes goalkeeper Javier Perez on a breakaway opportunity. Acosta waited for Perez to cheat left, then softly deposited the ball into the right portion of the net for the game’s first tally. Memorial scored again in the second half for a 2-0 win over Economedes on Friday.
Acosta’s composed finish belied the fact that he is a natural sweeper who is playing forward due to injuries in the Wolverines’ forward ranks.
Memorial coach Alex Cruz said Acosta wasn’t sure about making the switch at first before ultimately agreeing to the move.
When the two teams met in Edinburg on Jan. 30, the Jaguars had all the scoring in a 3-0 blanking.
“To me, this game is more satisfying, because we are playing without three starters,” Cruz said after Friday’s final whistle. “(Acosta is) a speedy guy. Surprisingly, he accepted the challenge, and it paid off with the speed. He’s got a good touch.”
Friday’s result muddles the top of District 31-6A’s standings. Frontrunners PSJA Southwest and Edinburg Economedes stay at 22 and 19 points, respectively, with losses Friday, while PSJA Memorial moves into third with 13 points.
Memorial senior goalie Rudy De Leon thrived on Friday after making an important move to sharpen his game between the posts.
“In the first games, honestly, I played without glasses, so I couldn’t really see that much,” De Leon said. “The coaches made me put my glasses on, and it was a big difference for the team. I barely started two games ago, and I wasn’t too confident those two games, because I was scared they would break. Now, I’m pretty confident.”
De Leon made at least seven plays over the course of the 80 minutes to charge the ball and negate the Jaguars attack.
Just five minutes into the game, De Leon interrupted a centering pass from Ramiro Rios to Abraham Alferez. The Jaguars controlled possession during most of the first half, but their passes were regularly intercepted by either De Leon or the Wolverines defenders.
Econ’s Perez made a pair of impressive saves before the scoring got underway. Acosta settled the ball and tried to power a shot just inside the near post, but Perez was in the way of the high-velocity shot. Garza had a chance not long after, but his shot rolled into the arms of Perez.
Econ was aggressive out of the halftime break. During the first six minutes of the second half, the Jaguars sent two free kicks screaming wide of both De Leon and the goal post. The Jags took four second-half free kicks.
Nearly 15 minutes into the half, the Wolverines took advantage of Econ’s time on the ball with a counterattack strike. Ruben Garza corralled the ball around midfield and made his own path with a deep run into the box. Garza made no mistake to double PSJA Memorial’s lead.
“It feels great, because it pushes us to keep going more and to defend and everything. It’s just a great feeling,” De Leon said about having goal support and playing with the lead.
Econ will look back on its missed opportunities on not just free kicks, but also corner kicks and centering passes. Many times, the Jaguars would send a potentially dangerous ball through the 6-yard box with no recipient to be found.
The tight 31-6A race will resume on Tuesday, when PSJA Memorial faces Edinburg North while Economedes hosts PSJA High.

Sharyland Pioneer regional champion, Diego Serna, takes lessons in stride

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

MISSION — Diego Serna was wrestling 8 pounds under his weight class as a freshman and 3 pounds underweight as a sophomore. He’s finally reached the goal weight of 106 pounds this season, but more than just muscle mass has contributed to his 37-4 junior campaign.

Serna has been stacking up team and individual awards as his career progresses, and he reflected on his growth when he came across a time capsule — an old cell phone with video footage of his early matches.

“I was actually looking at my old phone not too long ago, and I’ve gotten a lot better. My technique has gotten a lot sharper,” Serna said. “I wasn’t that strong my freshman year, and the desire to win got my head on the right path. I just kept shooting for it.”

Serna defeated Javier Chapa from Victoria West in a 9-6 decision to secure his second regional championship in two years and a most outstanding wrestler honor last weekend at the Delco Center in Austin.

The Diamondbacks boys wrestling team won its first district championship in 2017, but this year the group took more leaps forward. Pioneer will send nine wrestlers to state — five boys and four girls — compared to just four in total last season.

Pioneer traveled to Corpus Christi and El Paso for dual meets, but the biggest impact on the season might have been made by the Texas Outlaw tournament in Allen — one of the state’s wrestling hotbeds. The girls spent the same weekend in Bryan for the Doc Hess Classic.

Coach Richard Eckley credited those tournaments with opening his team’s eyes to the way the sport’s elite grapplers work.

“It was awesome, because our kids got to see what the final goal should look like for our program down here,” Eckley said. “The speed and the mat awareness that the kids have, how quickly they take advantage of even your smallest mistake.”

Serna and Dominique Rodriguez (182) took fifth place, while Brandon Pritchard (145) and Emmanuel Huerta (195) finished in sixth place. Those four, plus 170 wrestler Manuel Almanza, will be competing at state.

Even as the No. 1 in his class, Serna will need to be sharp, because he knows the top competition has a unique skill set.

“You learn a lot from your losses, because people use different techniques,” Serna said. “Up there (in Allen), they have a different style, and I really got to get a look at how they do things up there. I know what to expect. It’s a lot more of a fast pace.”

Eckley says that awareness is the biggest improvement in Serna, next to maturing physically.

“He’s got more mat time, so he feels things,” Eckley said. “He’s seen so much on the mat, even in these three years, that he recognizes situations incredibly quick and can take advantage of when an opponent makes a mistake, or create that mistake in an opponent.”

Pioneer’s girls team is led by a young core. Sophomore Mia Padilla earned regional silver at 138 pounds, and Alejandra Briere-Segovia won a 102-pound regional bronze medal during her first season of high school wrestling.

Briere-Segovia is a rare first-year wrestler who joins the sport with a mountain of experience. Her brother wrestled, while her father is still involved as a coach. She’s competed since she was 9.

Even with the guidance of her wrestling-inclined family, she’s grown under the direction of Eckley, who wrestled at Iowa Wesleyan.

He’s hard to miss at any tournament. He can be heard no matter the size of the venue. His yelling and intensity draw glares from other spectators, but the Diamondbacks don’t take the shouting personally.

“I really like the way he connects to us. He can tell us anything, and we’ll do it right away,” Briere-Segovia, who faces Brianna Mancillas of Fort Worth Chisholm Trail in round one, said. “There’s a certain respect with a coach, and with him, it’s just more than any coach I’ve ever had. I feel like I’ve really got more mature and learned new technique. With that, I’m really skyrocketing and feeling more confident in my moves and what I’m doing.”

Eckley knows how he can come off to the outside and is gracious for the support around his program.

“They see the relationship I’ve built with them,” Eckley said. “They know that, on match day, it’s about being intense, and they expect them to be intense and be different people than you see right here. We have a great group of kids that are willing to take coaching. We have a group of parents that are willing to let me coach their kids.”

The UIL state wrestling tournaments for Classes 5A and 6A get underway today in Cypress at the Berry Center and conclude with medal matches on Saturday.

Steady play gives McAllen Memorial girls shutout win over Rowe

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Coming into Tuesday’s game, both McAllen Memorial and McAllen Rowe had identical, one-loss district records. Memorial created separation on the field and in the standings with a 3-0 win over Rowe at home at Boxer Hernandez Stadium.

The Mustangs handled the Warriors’ early efforts to push forward and probed to find their own offense. Memorial (5-1) outside backs Ashante Lee and Leilani Sanchez were up for the task of fending off long-ball attempts by Rowe (4-2).

“It kind of boosts our confidence up there, that they’re working hard in the back,” Memorial forward Geo Hernandez said. “It kind of pushes us to keep working hard up on top to get early goals, because we’ve always been a team that needs to score early.”

Memorial almost found that early tally less than 10 minutes into play, when a centering ball bounced off Rowe goalie Hethyr Moore’s hands. Ari Ramirez had an empty net but couldn’t bury the header, sending the ball off the football goal post.

Hernandez eventually rewarded the Mustangs’ offensive pressure with a first-touch shot following a Viviana Cruz throw-in halfway through the first period.

The Mustangs started the game with the gusty wind at their back, but coach Matthew Kaiser believes playing against the wind might be a benefit.

“The girls know some of these players just like they know McHi, so they’re comfortable playing against them. I try to get the girls to take the emotion out of it and go out and play solid soccer, just like we practice,” Kaiser said. “The last two games have been windy, but we’ve actually done better against the wind than with it.”

His philosophy is that playing against the wind forces his team to be “more deliberate” with its passes and runs.

The second half brought better play from the Mustangs, who almost doubled their lead just 40 seconds after the whistle. Hernandez was in alone with time to beat Rowe’s Moore, but the keeper came up with her best save to that point in the night.

Later, Mustangs sophomore Mia Perez provided a flawless delivery to Ramirez, who made no mistake on a breakaway 8:54 into the second half.

Midfielder Andrea Santana echoed her coach’s sentiments regarding the team’s more polished play when facing the 30 mph gusts.

“We had the wind against us, so it was easier for us to pass instead of long ball, long ball,” Santana said. “The passes were accurate and one-touch or two-touch, and that’s why we scored two goals against the wind.”

Santana scored the game’s last goal with 27:08 remaining. All three of Memorial’s goals were scored by sophomores.

Rowe’s high-scoring trio of Emily Morin, Sabina Sanchez and Alexa Garza was stifled, struggling to even get good looks at the goal.

Kaiser said his speedy defenders caused frustration for the Warriors forwards, who were used to more time and space on the ball.

“We’ve got a really athletic defense. That makes it hard for teams that want to play long ball, because our girls can run with pretty much any of the forwards we face,” Kaiser said.

Memorial’s goalie tandem of Victoria Tanguma and Desiree Lujan combined for the shutout. Lujan was more often tested, wrapping up a first-half free kick and stopping a pass from Morin to Garza to preserve the clean sheet.

“If we have one goalie injured, we can depend on the second goalie, who has the same capability,” Santana said. “We have confidence in them, like our coach said, so it’s easy to connect with them, as well.”

Casas, Farias-Ramirez finish careers on the podium at UIL State meet

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

AUSTIN — The Valley’s top two swimmers wrapped up their high school swimming careers this weekend at the UIL Swimming and Diving State Meet.

McAllen High’s Shaine Casas brought his medal count to five across three state trips after adding a silver and bronze to his collection in the 6A competition on Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin.

He finished in second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.12 seconds, just three-hundredths of a second slower than Allen’s Jason Park (47.09).

Casas had a slight lead after 50 yards, but Park and Noah Henry from Belton closed in during the sprint to the final turn. The final 25 yards were a dash to the wall that came down to a touch. Casas caught Henry, but not Park.

“It’s a little disappointing, but it’s just fuel for later,” Casas said. “I’m not mad with it anymore. I’ve come to peace with it already.”

Casas is likely to see much of the UIL state field when he swims for Texas A&M next season, or even on the national circuit as he and his USA National Junior teammates vie for a chance at the 2020 Olympic team.

Casas earned bronze in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.59, behind Park (47.50) and champion Henry (47.07).

“It was just a mental game,” Casas said. “I don’t know. I was just thrown off after I didn’t really swim fast on my relay. I just wasn’t the same today.”

McAllen’s 200 medley relay team cut time from its qualifying mark and finished in sixth place with a time of 1:34.06.

The initial disappointment was evident, but Casas collected his thoughts and reflected on his career.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” Casas said of medaling. “I mean, only three people get it a year.”

First-year McHi coach Albino Cisneros also felt the sting but said the future Aggie has a bright future.

“Of course, we aren’t happy right now in the moment, but he’s the best swimmer the Valley’s ever seen,” Cisneros said. “He has a lot of to be proud of. It was a fun year, and he’ll move on to better things at A&M. He’ll see these kids again.”

On Saturday morning, Luciano Farias-Ramirez of Sharyland High cut 48-hundredths of a second from his preliminary time to jump from fourth seed to bronze-medal winner in the 5A butterfly.

His time of 50.43 was bested only by silver medalist Greyson Alarcon from Georgetown (49.26) and state champion Peter Simmons of College Station A&M Consolidated (49.15).

The Rattlers senior was also making his third appearance at the state meet. He qualified as a freshman, was disqualified before state his sophomore year and earned 13th in the butterfly as a junior.

Ramirez also added a seventh-place finish in the backstroke with a time of 51.36.

Adrian Fierro of Brownsville Veterans finished eighth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.44. He also finished third in the consolation heat of the 50 freestyle. His time of 21.74 was the 10th best of day two.
