La Joya Juarez-Lincoln boys soccer creates distance in district, beating Mission High

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

LA JOYA — After 40 minutes, four goals were split evenly between Mission High and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln. The top two boys teams in District 30-6A seemed to be headed for a tight finish. However, with 10 minutes remaining, the Huskies crowd was singing praises and chanting for uno mas gol in the 5-2 game on Friday at La Joya ISD Stadium.

Juarez-Lincoln (8-1) forward Gerardo Reyes left his fingerprints all over the match, scoring once in the first half on a penalty kick, then twice in the second half to secure the win.

“Our coach always tells us to stay mentally strong,” Reyes said. “We had that lead 2-0, and then they tied us. The good thing is we didn’t go down as a team. We stayed strong and continued playing.”

Despite losing 3-0 to the Eagles (6-3) on Feb. 6, Huskies coach Victor Ramos was convinced his team was stronger once it worked through its mistakes.

Halftime on Friday wasn’t a time of adjustment; more like a time of refocusing and staying on course.

“We were playing well. We made some mistakes,” Ramos said. “We just needed to clean up a little bit and continue playing the way we were. We knew that we had control of the game. We were faster and stronger. It was just a matter of time.”

Leonardo Pruneda untied Friday’s score following a hard penalty that knocked Manuel Castrejón out of the game.

“At first, I felt nervous, but when I saw the ball touch the net, I felt relief,” Pruneda, a lanky senior defender, said.

The goal was like a trampoline for Juarez-Lincoln, which continued to feed Reyes the ball. He scored his team’s fourth goal with 18:50 remaining. His hat-trick tally came on a powerful individual effort that ended with him falling on his back as the ball careened off the post and in.

“Every year, my team is who always makes it easy for me to score goals,” Reyes said. “I’m happy this is my team.”

The win may have come at a cost to the Huskies. Standout midfielder Castrejón suffered an injury on the play inside of the box that resulted in the go-ahead goal. He spent a while on the turf before having to be helped off the field with an apparent left leg injury.

Castrejon was the focus of coaches and training staff once the final whistle blew.

“Every single player is important in the team,” Ramos said. “He’s going to the hospital right now just to make sure everything is OK. We’re not going to take anything for granted. Hopefully, everything is fine.”

The entire game was physical and featured heavy tackling, which was reflected in the teams receiving two yellow cards apiece. Both sides were also tagged with red cards after pushing and shoving in the late moments.

“The problem is when you allow the game to play like that, with this kind of referees that are not ready for this kind of game, that’s what happens,” Ramos said.

Juarez-Lincoln scored its first goal on the Reyes penalty kick 11:15 into the action. Castrejón drew the foul with a hard run and cutback that caused Mission’s Nicolas Diaz to take him down.

Before the clock operators even realized play had started back up, the ball was in the net again. This time, Reyes was feeding Castrejón on a cross-field pass that resulted in an easy tap-in.

Even in a four-goal first half, the story of the final 20 minutes before halftime belonged to Eagles keeper Leo Cantu.

Cantu made a sprawling save on a Reyes free kick and two saves on Johan Arevalo to keep his team from falling behind 3-0.

Mission forward Allan Palafox netted two goals in quick succession. First, he deposited a penalty kick that was awarded because of an inadvertent handball in the box.

Palafox then received a pass from Diaz that he turned into a run past everyone, including the goalkeeper, before putting the ball in the empty net.

Yozary Gonzalez leads PSJA Memorial’s push for a district championship

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

ALAMO — Running warmup laps before the sun has fully illuminated the sky above 6:30 a.m. soccer practice at PSJA Memorial High School requires full investment from the players.

Splitting allotted practice time into a morning and afternoon session was a decision made by girls coach Art Chavez to ensure the team doesn’t have to practice in the dark — a possibility if all the day’s work was done after school. The team practices on an auxiliary field without stadium lighting.

The move had more benefits than just combating daylight savings in the afternoon. It pushed the Wolverines to lock in and commit more time toward improving, which has led to a 7-1-2 record and 25 points in the District 31-6A standings. The Wolverines are a point off the pace set by Edinburg North with five games to play.

“The best part about winning is knowing how hard we worked in the mornings,” Yozary Gonzalez said. “Every morning practice, we wake up at 5, we come here, we work out. After school, during soccer class, we put in the work that we should be putting in to come out with the wins.”

Gonzalez, a four-year letterman, was part of the last PSJA Memorial team to qualify for the playoffs, in 2015. She got a taste of the postseason during her freshman season before the team was ousted 5-0 by powerhouse Los Fresnos in the bi-district round.

The last two years have been a tough lesson about how difficult getting back into the postseason is. The Wolverines missed a playoff berth by a point last year and don’t want that drama again. They’re taking charge of their own playoff scenarios.

“This year, it’s a lot more special knowing we are accomplishing stuff on our own instead of depending on other teams to allow us to qualify,” Gonzalez said. “For me, I’m going to leave school knowing that we accomplished something that we always wanted.”

Gonzalez has been on a torrid goal-scoring pace in 2018. She’s scored nearly 60 percent of the team’s goals in district games (13 of 22), but much of the talk about her play has been about her unselfishness.

“She helps a lot — pass-wise, defense-wise. I really trust her in anything,” fellow senior Kristi Gomez said.

Gomez recalled an instance of Gonzalez drawing five defenders before finding an open Wolverine during a game a few weeks ago. She also offered praise for Gonzalez as a competitor and teammate.

“She’s an amazing athlete,” Gomez said. “From her freshman year compared to now, her senior year, she grew so much. She’s more mature. When a teammate is down, she’s always there to help. That’s what I really love about her. She’s such an amazing teammate — sister. Words can’t explain how she is.”

While her game has expanded beyond just offense, Gonzalez hasn’t lost her touch on the ball. Success has brought on extra attention from Memorial’s opponents, but that has just caused the midfielder to play with more precision.

“It was a work in progress,” Chavez said. “At the beginning, she was one-minded like every 14-year-old. Always ‘go, attack.’ Throughout the years, we have molded her and made her an overall player. When we’re up and we’re trying to guard, we put an extra defender, and Yozary is the one that goes back and helps us out.”

In the middle of a windy afternoon practice session, Gonzalez reflected on the difference in her mentality on the field since 2015.

“When I was 14, I basically just thought about myself,” Gonzalez said. “All I thought was about scoring and scoring. I think this year, I think more about the team and about us and how hard we work together. I know how much they work and how much I work. It’s a team effort.”

THE RIGHT CHOICE

Gomez, who had a memorable volleyball season in the fall, almost didn’t play her fourth year of soccer after signing to play volleyball at Laredo Community College.

Words of encouragement from her six senior teammates convinced the goalie to put the gloves back on and be a part of another playoff run. She’s had the guidance of assistant coach Mauricio Chacon, who played goalie in Costa Rica.

The Wolverines have conceded just nine goals in 10 district games, and only six have been with Gomez in the net. The combination of stingy defense and a quick-striking offense has caused the bar to be raised on the fly.

“Our goal was to make playoffs, but we’re already in playoffs, so why not go that extra mile and get district champs? We’re working as a team — working hard to get a district championship, as well,” Gomez said.

OTHER OPTIONS

Opponents have to pick their poison between Gonzalez and her supporting cast, which includes Litzy de Angel, Gianna Salinas or even defender Ester Martinez. Each has made a mark on the score sheet.

“When they put a personal defender on me, it’s very hard for me to keep my calm and focus, but I think about my team first,” Gonzalez said. “I don’t really focus on them. I just play my game. I feel more free when there’s no one on me. I get to pass the ball around — shoot around more than usual.”

La Joya Juarez-Lincoln boys soccer returns to form, crushes Palmview

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

LA JOYA — For half of the district season, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln was getting by shorthanded, with key pieces of the starting 11 injured. Now, the Huskies are healthier and back to big wins, like Tuesday’s 6-0 victory over La Joya Palmview at La Joya ISD Stadium.
On Tuesday, the Huskies resembled last season’s group that finished a game away from the state championship.
The Huskies were swarming early, sending two quality chances at the goal in three minutes. Fernando Zavala made a pair of stops to stave off the immediate pressure, but he couldn’t keep the Lobos level for long.
Juarez-Lincoln senior midfielder Manuel Castrejon scored the game’s first goal on a shot that was intended as a pass to Gerardo Reyes. Instead, the ball went over the head of Reyes and past the Lobos keeper, who had been preparing for a header.
Castrejon knew the early flurry of offense rattled Palmview and called it a major aspect in wearing the opponents down mentally.
“Lucky the shots we shot at the beginning of the game went in, and Palmview lost their head — their focus,” Castrejon said. “It was just those shots that killed them in the beginning of the game. That was the key to this game.”
The last meeting was much tighter — a 1-0 result in favor of the Huskies.
Juarez-Lincoln’s Johan Arevalo scored 20 seconds after the game’s first tally, at 6:20. His goal was a shock to the crowd as well as the defending Lobos, who had less success containing the Huskies as the game went on.
Reyes was one of the players who suffered an injury early in the district season. The reliable goal scorer looked back to 100 percent against Palmview.
Reyes netted a beautifully placed free kick in the top corner — out of the reach of Zavala — to put the score at 3 goals to none.
“We’re on a streak,” Reyes said. “The three past games we’ve been scoring more than five goals on each team. It feels great getting to score goals for my team. Most of all, not to get injured. I’m grateful for that.”
The Huskies continued to pour it on in the second half. Reyes also scored the game’s fifth goal, after being sent on a breakaway from a pass by Juan Castillo.
Castillo had a goal of his own, jarring a ball free from the goaltender and then depositing the loose change.
Javier Torres scored the sixth and final tally of the night for the Huskies.
“The kids are playing great, six goals, what can I say?” Juarez-Lincoln coach Victor Ramos said after the win. “We needed this game to play better.”
Ramos was happy to see his senior group, led by Reyes and Castrejon, show off its maturity. The game was chippy at points, but the Huskies avoided getting involved in after-the-whistle altercations.
“I think they’re doing really well,” Ramos said. “Experience-wise and discipline. In previous years, we had to deal with some kind of discipline. This year, they’re very focused, and you can tell.”
Castrejon, who was last season’s District 30-6A MVP, is obviously a key cog in the team’s success. But the senior has the maturity to recognize that big wins can benefit his soccer program in the long term.
“That’s one of our strategies our coach tries to work with us: score as many goals as we can and give the — we could say bench — some minutes so they can experience playing on the field,” Castrejon said. “We’re on our way out. This is our last year, and they are upcoming players that need to play.”
The Huskies will continue their march toward another district title Friday when they face Mission High — the only team to beat Juarez-Lincoln in district play.
“It was a tough loss. We weren’t expecting that,” Castrejon admitted about the 3-0 loss on Feb. 2. “We’ve been working very hard, and it’s sweet that we have another game coming up.”

PSJA Memorial’s Cruz Gomez sweeps McAllen Invitational distance; Weslaco High’s Longoria comes from behind

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

McALLEN — PSJA Memorial’s Cruz Gomez ran hard on his way to three gold medals at the McAllen ISD invitational tournament. He finished the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 24.54 seconds, never trailing McAllen Memorial’s Evan Williams, who ran a 4:39.15.

Gomez won comfortably, but the meet was an early chance to get his legs under him after he finished in fifth at state in the event last year.

“For right now it’s just, I did three events to build up some strength,” Gomez said. “It’s always a blessing just to run and compete with all these talented runners. Let’s say last season I ran 4:20 in this meet. This year, I’m going to see if I can run a 4:19.”

His best time in 2017 was a 4:14.29 at the Class 6A Region IV meet.
Gomez had a strong cross country season, finishing fifth at state and qualifying for the Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon in December.

“It was a really fun experience, getting to know nationwide talented athletes,” Gomez said. “Right now, I’m a national high school runner. It just built up my confidence a lot. It did a lot psychologically.”

Gomez also finished first in the 3,200-meter run and shared the high-point honors of the meet with McAllen High’s Gunnar Henderson.
Henderson won gold in the 100-meter dash with a 10.91, gold in the 300 hurdles with a 41.04 and was a part of McHi’s first place 800 relay (1:32.24). That relay edged out PSJA North, which finished in 1:33.19.

McAllen High thrower Tito Cantu continued his strong start to the season, earning double gold in the shot put and discus.

In the girls 1600 run, Weslaco High freshman Destinee Longoria won an exciting four-lap race. For three laps, the Panthers runner was in second behind Laredo Alexander’s Claudette Soto. Longoria made her move in the final lap.

She ended up finishing first with a time of 5:36.76, in front of Macy Henderson from McAllen Memorial and Soto.

“It was kind of hard to come back from being in the back, but I just kept with the win, because it helped me. I just wanted it, and I went for it,” Longoria said. “It shows me the competition, and I get to see where I’m standing right now, and I’ll just get better from here.”

Edcouch-Elsa girls shine at Rey Ramirez Relays

The Yellow Jackets girls track team earned first place behind the strength of some strong individual performances in Rio Grande City on Friday.

Junior Bianca Cardenas soared in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 3 inches. The jump was good for a personal and meet record.

Shana Alvarado also won jumping gold for the Jackets with a 15-9 in the long jump.

Cardenas also finished in second place in the 100 dash with a time of 13.24, behind RGC sophomore Daniella Muniz.

The Jackets’ 400 relay, consisting of Alvarado, Cardenas, Amethyst Cavazos and Briana Alvarado, finished second with a time of 51.79, behind Laredo United (50.82).

Laredo United (153) won the team title on the boys side over RGC (107.5) and La Joya High (82).

RGV wrestlers wrap up 2017-18 season with several top-six finishes

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

McAllen High’s Serena Cervantes was the best finisher among the Valley’s congregation of wrestlers at the UIL state wrestling meet on Saturday in Cypress.
Cervantes finished in fourth place in the Class 6A 128-pound weight class for the second year in a row after qualifying for the semifinals with two pins on Friday.

The four semifinalists entered with a combined record of 156-0, including the two finalists from last year’s 138-pound championship who moved down in weight class. Cervantes’ coach, Hilario Compean, called it a “clash of the titans.”

Cervantes lost by decision to Xochitl Mota-Pettis, who went on to claim silver.
Sharyland Pioneer’s Mia Padilla took fifth place in the Class 5A 138 class after taking down Alyssa Murillo from Willis with a pin just 51 seconds into the final round of the fifth-place match. Padilla started the day in the semifinal match, which she lost to Danielle Walker of Waller High School, who finished second.

Pioneer’s Emanuel Huerta earned sixth place in the 5A 195 class. He fought back from a first-round defeat to win four matches in the consolation bracket. The tournament was similar to Huerta’s regional outing, during which he qualified primarily through consolation wins.

Weslaco High’s Melissa Ibarra earned sixth place in the 6A 110 division. She won a 1-0 decision over the Region I champion, Rhyan Vasquez of El Paso Eastwood, before falling to Annamarie Crixell and Alina Kinsey of Conroe Oak Ridge and Austin Bowie, respectively.

La Joya Juarez-Lincoln’s Vanessa Doria placed sixth with a similar consolation path. She won a major decision 15-4 against Neftali Villegas Contre of Conroe Oak Ridge and a 6-3 decision over Chalimar Rodriguez from Keller Timber Creek. Doria’s final match was a loss to Mya Engert from Amarillo Tascosa.
