La Joya Juarez-Lincoln wraps up district race, can look forward

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

The La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Huskies’ 5-2 win over second-place Mission High on March 2 went a long way to securing the District 30-6A title, and their 5-1 win over McAllen High on Tuesday made it official. The 2017 state semifinalists have the chance to take a deep breath after achieving their first goal of the 2018 season.

“It’s always a good feeling, winning a district title, and then with three games left, there’s a lot of things we can do,” Juarez-Lincoln coach Victor Ramos said. “We can give some rest to the kids, the ones that are dealing with injury, and have some relaxed time.”

Early in the season, the Huskies were hit with key injuries to their two most effective offensive players and their last line of defense. Since returning to health, the Huskies have scored four or more goals in their last six games.

Against Mission, Juarez-Lincoln senior forward Manuel Castrejon went down with a knee injury. The initial moments after the injury were tense for the Huskies, but most signs point to a potential return for No. 10, either in the regular season or postseason.
“We don’t have a time when he will be able to return,” Ramos said. “We know that everything came out negative. He doesn’t have any broken bones (or structural damage). He has another appointment with a specialist, so we’ll know more next week. But everything is going well. He’s walking.”

Another benefit to wrapping up the No. 1 playoff seed in 30-6A is the ability to keep an eye out for the projected fourth-place finisher in 29-6A. Last year, Juarez-Lincoln beat both Laredo United South and Laredo United on the way to the state tournament.
“It feels like Laredo United South is the one in fourth right now,” Ramos said. “This time is also going to give the opportunity, knowing our position already, it’s easier to go and see who we might be facing in the bi-district championship.”

Donna North girls soccer baptized by fire in 32-5A

NATHANIEL MATA | THE MONITOR

The Donna North Chiefs are headed back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2015 season, and head coach Tony Garcia likes his team’s chances to carry district success into the postseason.
Though the team won’t catch undefeated Brownsville Pace to capture its third district title in five seasons, Donna North is using district play to prepare for the next phase.

“The nature of this district, with the way the Brownsville town produces soccer and plays soccer, we know that in order to be the best we have to beat the best, which is Brownsville,” Garcia said. “It’s one of those situations where we have to be ready. Eventually, in the postseason, all these games that we play against them is only bound to help us.”

Veteran Elizabeth Reyes and freshman Gabby Aviles have had the scoring touch all season, helping the team net 3.75 goals per game in their eight district wins. Reyes, a senior, has eclipsed the 100-goal mark in her career.

The combo of youth and experience isn’t uncommon on the team. Freshman center midfielder Nancy Espino and senior captain and midfield wing Yamile Gonzalez have also worked in tandem to keep scoring low.

“It’s one of those seasons where we let our offense win the ball games, and then our defense is going to,” Garcia said. “They bought into the concept of ‘offense translates to defense, and defense translates to offense.’”

Donna North’s three losses have come to Brownsville-area teams. Donna North lost to Pace twice — first by one goal, then a 5-0 drubbing this week — and dropped a 5-4 game in overtime to Porter.
“It’s a very competitive district,” Garcia said. “We as coaches and as players understand the importance of being game ready every Tuesday and Friday.”

Last season, District 32-5A won three of four bi-district matchups against 31-5A. Sharyland Pioneer’s 2-0 win over Brownsville Porter was the one exception. All four of the 2017 playoff qualifiers came from Brownsville.

Sharyland High’s Madison Bickerton signs to UTRGV

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — To say Sharyland High’s Madison Bickerton comes from an athletic family may be a bit of an understatement. She’s seen both of her brothers sign to play college baseball, while her father, Barton, is one of the most decorated high school baseball coaches in the Valley.

On Tuesday afternoon, Madison had her time to shine as she signed a national letter of intent to join the track and field team at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Even with the athletic pedigree, the senior who is a four-year letterman in both volleyball and track had a decision to make. She could attend college strictly for academics at UT Austin, or go to UTRGV and have a chance to compete.

“I never thought that I would ever have the opportunity to just go out there and (be a) high jumper at a DI school,” Madison Bickerton said.

Madison was spotted by Taylor Cipicchio, UTRGV’s jumping and multi-event coach, by chance.

“It just happened that I was at a track meet and the coach showed up,” Madison Bickerton said. “She’s one of those coaches that doesn’t look at the numbers, but she looks at your ability. That’s something that I really look forward to. They don’t look at just your numbers, but your opportunity, and how much ability you have as an athlete.”

Bickerton has a 3.80 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and ranks in the top 7 percent in her class. Despite an acceptance to the University of Texas, she couldn’t pass up the chance to follow her dreams as a competitor.

“It’s amazing just to think that I’m going to be competing all around the nation,” Bickerton said. “And just growing up in a prestigious sports-related family, I’m kind of fulfilling the family prestige.”

She’ll be competing in Edinburg — the same place her father played baseball at legacy institution UTPA from 1990-92. The proud father was happy to see Madison following his path while finding her own.

“It’s special. Both of her brothers went to play baseball in college,” Barton Bickerton said. “We always thought she was going to take the academic route. We were happy with that. Then, this came along. It’s kind of a surprise. It’s been even better than the boys, because we knew they were going to play. It’s been real special.”

Barton Bickerton offered his perspective as a father, former student-athlete, educator and coach who has sent players to college.

“You can’t beat the DI experience,” Barton Bickerton said. “I think she would have regretted it — not taking this opportunity to at least go and try. She can always go to UT later on, but this is something you cannot pass by. To have her close to home, where we can actually go watch, is going to be great.”

Sharyland High girls take firm hold of first place in District 31-5A with win over Sharyland Pioneer

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — The rematch between Sharyland High and Sharyland Pioneer in girls soccer was everything it was expected to be. The crosstown rivals at the front of the nine-team District 31-5A produced another instant classic in their final regular-season meeting of 2018, with Sharyland High prevailing 2-1 on penalty kicks on Tuesday at Sharyland Pioneer.

With four minutes to play in the game, Rattlers goalie Ana De La Torre’s strong effort appeared to be not enough to get the result. Her fingertip saves in the first half were important, but for the second time, the Diamondbacks played a strong defensive game limiting Sharyland’s Kaitie Watson.

With 4:15 to play and the Diamondbacks hanging on to a 1-0 lead, a foul was called on a Pioneer handball 30 feet from goal.

Everyone knew what was coming next: a great chance for Watson, the senior forward. No one in a white Pioneer uniform could do much about the perfect free kick.

Watson lined up, waited for the whistle and sent home a sailing, bending shot out of the reach of Pioneer keeper Yulissa Ocuna.

“I knew it was probably going to be the last solid chance we had in the game,” Watson said. “I felt pretty confident, because we had just practiced that free kick at practice, and I was hitting them all on point. I went over there confident, but watching it actually go into the net, I can’t even describe it. It was just an amazing feeling to know that I can do that for my team.”

Watson and fellow forward Xochitl Nguma were closely marked just like the first meeting, with strong play by Pioneer defenders. Olivia Vasquez and Cielo Bocanegra stood out, doing much of the heavy lifting for the Diamondbacks (11-2, 34 points) back line.

Sharyland (12-1, 36 pts) coach Mario Ribera gave credit to his counterpart for giving his offense such a hard time creating during their two meetings.

“I have to give credit to coach (J.J.) Lopez,” Ribera said. “The first half, they dominated. We didn’t have opportunities. Kaitie was well marked. Very fortunate for us, we had the free kick. Having Kaitie on the team is something special. She makes things happen.”

The first 40 minutes were almost exclusively positive for Pioneer. The Diamondbacks not only stifled the Rattlers offense but also passed the ball well and made De La Torre work in goal.

Just 10 minutes into the game, De La Torre dove to her left and threw up her left hand to barely keep a shot from Pioneer’s Lauren Guerra out of the net.

De La Torre also stayed poised midway through the first half, when a series of four corner kicks in quick succession were sent through the box. Her defense helped with a pair, but she had to intercept two fast-moving centers.

“The first half was very intense,” De La Torre said. “I feel like Pioneer had much more possession of the ball, and we were going against the wind, which is a big factor. If I make those saves, I don’t think of anything. It’s pure adrenaline.”

De La Torre was finally beat a minute into the second half after Jocelyn Boyle found Guerra alone in front of the goal. This time, Guerra wouldn’t be denied. The ball hit the post and went past De La Torre.

Late first-half fouls and injuries upped the intensity of the already tight contest, which led to plenty of fan reaction and stern talks from referees. The chippy play continued, but Sharyland’s push for a goal took center stage.

Pioneer almost scored a second goal with 15 minutes to play, but De La Torre bailed her team out twice on a pair of point-blank chances.

Sharyland continued to be frustrated offensively before earning the late free kick.

“It was really emotional, because we knew what we had to do,” Watson said. “We had to come out with a win, or a win in PKs, to be district champions. We came with the right mindset, and we were really excited after losing last time.”

Sharyland won the shootout by making all five of its attempts, while Pioneer’s Amanda Tyrrell shot her attempt over the crossbar.

The drama was palpable not only on the field but on the sidelines. Sharyland’s coach knew a win would put his team in the district’s driver’s seat with three games remaining.

“I couldn’t sleep last night,” Ribera said. “This is my first year here (at) Sharyland, and I’m extremely happy, being in a rivalry and also playing for first place.”
