Weslaco High volleyball demanding respect with bounce back season

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — Inside Domingo P. Sepulveda gymnasium on the campus of Weslaco High School, the intensity is high and the Panthers volleyball team is hard at work with only a few games left in the regular season.

Mid-October is relatively late for Weslaco to be involved in meaningful matches. During the previous four years as the season reached its latter stages the Panthers tended to fade away, or had already been eliminated from playoff contention by then.

In the past, multi-sport athletes might have started to dust off their basketball shoes or cleats to prepare for their main sport.

In 2018 however, in the team’s second year under coach Axle Valle and in its first season in District 31-6A, things are looking up.

“Coming into this year we really had high expectations, we wanted to be district (champs), go to playoffs,” Illiyah Cantu said. “We wanted to do things like change it up. With that we worked hard, we were determined to go to playoffs, compared to last year we really didn’t have that mentality.”

Valle, who came from former district rival San Benito, knew about some of the athletic prowess at Weslaco. She made sure to let her team know that volleyball shouldn’t be the exception.

“I’m not too sure if it’s something they even though about,” Valle said. “Maybe they were just kind of settled. I think the thought process before was ‘Oh if we lose in volleyball, we’re going to make it up. We’re going to get them in basketball or softball.’ As soon as I got in here, I let them know right away. ‘There’s no reason why we can’t be as successful as basketball or softball.’ They work so hard; they have great hearts.”

Cantu is a senior on the team and wasn’t ready to be a part of a class that never saw the postseason. She’s been a part of basketball playoff teams, this would be her first trip past the volleyball regular season.

“The last playoff experience was 2014, it was our seniors eighth-grade year,” Cantu said. “We really wanted a change for volleyball. We wanted to make a name to it. All the other sports are so successful with playoffs, we’re well known. Volleyball is something where it wasn’t. It was like ‘Oh, it’s Weslaco, it’s okay.’ We wanted to change that. We wanted to make a name for the volleyball program.”

Audrey Escamilla, who stars on the softball diamond, knows a thing or two about a strong unit at Weslaco. She was a part of the 2016 softball team that reached the state semifinals. She’s also been a part of the volleyball team since her freshman year. She feels the difference.

“The chemistry, that’s what makes a good team, in any sport, not just volleyball,” Escamilla said. “I’ve been on this team since my freshman year and we’ve never had the chemistry we have this year, we’re super close. I think that carries on to the court and you can tell we just flow really nice with each other.”

A big factor in Weslaco’s rise that saw the team go from 1-13 a year ago in 32-6A to their current 7-2 record in 31-6A is on the bench. Valle was hired close to the season in 2017 but with a full offseason leading into this year, the improvement was tangible.

“Last year, we took a lot of time really just trying to get to know her and we were kind of iffy about the new things that were implemented,” Escamilla said. “Last year, we didn’t get to work in the summer because she wasn’t hired yet. This year we had all summer to implement what she
taught us the first year. Going into this year we already had chemistry with her, we already had trust in her so we didn’t need to take time building that up.”

Heading into action today the Panthers are tied with the Edinburg Vela Saber-Cats at 7-2, with Vela holding the 2-0 head-to-head advantage. They have a date with fourth place Edinburg High (6-3) tonight and meeting with third place Edinburg North (7-3) to end the regular season. Sandwiched between those contests is a match against cross-town rivals Weslaco East.

Escamilla is another senior but the team also gets contributions from other classes. Daniella Garza, who handles hitting duties and Kimmi Espinoza, who is the team’s libero, are sophomores.

Escamilla played outside hitter in the past but now she’s been slotted to the back row. That unselfishness is key to athletic players finding their best spot for the team’s short- and long-term success.

“We have a lot of utility players,” Cantu said. “Some that can play all around. Kyleen (Black) our setter plays all around. We have a really good defense and good offense. Most of the girls on offense can really progress into defense.”

Senior setter Adamari Ochoa, who plays volleyball exclusively, says her teammates who have seen playoffs in other sports will be important down the stretch.

“We have several players, like basketball players and softball players that have gone all the way to state,” Ochoa, a senior setter, said. “What they have that has helped us is the leadership. They know how intense it will become once we do go ahead and make playoffs.”

McAllen Memorial takes big step forward toward a district championship with five-set win over McHi

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — The match wasn’t always pretty, but in the end McAllen Memorial’s five-set victory over McAllen High put the Mustangs right where they want to be, on the verge of an outright district championship.

Calling Saturday’s contest hard-fought would be an understatement considering the importance of the match, but Memorial had just enough to prevail 19-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 17-15 during the seventh annual Dig for A Cure game at the McAllen High gym.

It was the second time the teams met in district and the second time all five sets were needed to decide a winner. Memorial improves to 11-0 in district with three games remaining on its schedule, McAllen High drops to 8-3.

“Today we knew they were gunning for us, we knew we were the team to beat,” Memorial’s Jocelynn Everage said. “We knew that without composure and without confidence this game would be impossible to win. Our confidence wavered at times but in the end, I’m so proud of them. I love my team; we’re a family and we were able to pull it off.”

Just like in Memorial’s gym on Sept. 18, McHi won the first set. The results repeated as the Mustangs were able to persevere and come through on top in five sets.

Everage had 28 kills and her hitting partner Valeria Trevino had 23 kills.

At times the pressure was palpable. Some of the biggest points and momentum swings were set in motion by errors. Both sides had a fair share of blunders and Memorial coach Lorena Lopez knew the match would come down to who could play cleaner volleyball.

“Between these two teams we’re evenly matched,” Lopez said. “It was going to come to who was making fewer service errors, who was not going to make that hitter error in that clutch moment. Since McHi and us seemed to be doing that in crucial moments at the same time that’s why we ended up in a fifth set, 17-15. That’s something that me and (McHi) coach (Paula) Dodge will work on going into playoffs.”

McHi’s offense was dangerous, even with the absence of secondary hitter Haide Moore. Lexi Gonzalez led the way again with 26 kills and Olivia Tite and Damaris Llanas both pitched in with 11 kills.

The Mustangs were up to the challenge on defense, however. Demy Banks had nine total blocks (four solos) and the team had 15 total.

“Defense definitely is a big part of a game like this especially when they have Lexi Gonzalez and Damaris Llanas,” Lopez said. “When you have those two hitting at you and hitting balls off your block we have to pick up the slack on defense. Demy takes pride in blocking, it’s something she puts a lot of work into. It’s a game changer for us.”

Mustangs’ setter Sydney Marburger had 46 assists and 22 digs. She only had three kills but saved her most important play for match point when she tipped the ball away from the Bulldogs defense to finish the match.

“We know we’re up there skill-wise just coming together, playing for each other that’s the biggest thing for the match,” Marburger said. “McHi was playing such great defense, we have some strong hitters and they also have really strong hitters so we knew we needed to be ready on defense.”

Memorial still needs to wait to officially claim the district championship, but the team is in prime position. The Mustangs have three matches remaining and would need to falter against teams they have swept to allow McAllen Rowe 9-2 back into the mix. By virtue of winning both matches against McHi, Memorial holds the tiebreaker is somehow they ended up tied.

“First, I’ve never won a district championship in my four years without it being a tiebreaker or a point margin or a coin flip or anything,” Everage said. “So knowing that we have almost secured this spot means the world to me. It’s something I’ve never done and I’m so proud my team has gotten me here.”

PSJA High runs and guns past McAllen Memorial

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

McAllen — The stars were shining in McAllen on Friday night when PSJA High and McAllen Memorial clashed at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Bears were just a hair brighter than the Mustangs to hang on and win a 49-43 seesaw contest.

There was no shortage of huge plays and key sequences, but the newbies to 30-6A, PSJA, were one step ahead of the hosts.

The Bears answered every punch thrown by the Mustangs with an even bigger haymaker. Finally, Trey Guajardo punched the ball in with 2:02 to play and PSJA’s defense ended any chance for overtime with a turnover to seal the win, similar to what happened last week against PSJA North.

“This is the No. 1 craziest game I’ve ever played in,” Bears receiver Marco Guajardo said. “I know I’m just a junior but I played last year. I’ve never been in a game this intense. These are the games you want to be in. That intense game, the crowd cheering, the whole stands going crazy.”

Known for their passing, the Bears were lifted by their rushing game and defense. The Mustangs were all-hands on deck to try to win without starting quarterback Sean Skaugen.

The Bears still weren’t out of the woods even in the final minute of play with a touchdown lead. The game wasn’t over until the defense, specifically linebacker Pablo Trevino, took matters into his own hands when he snatched a pass intended for a Memorial receiver. He took the interception more than 90 yards for a pick-six thanks to a convoy of defensive linemen.

“I just kept looking back. I was thinking someone was coming behind me. I didn’t want to fumble,” Trevino said. “I got to the sideline, everyone was piling on me. I was like ‘oh God, I need an oxygen tank or something.’ I was dying, but it worked out in the end.”

PSJA High improves to 3-0 (4-2 overall) in district play while Memorial falls to 1-2 (2-4 overall) and dropped its second game in a row after watching its 27-game win streak snapped last week.

After trailing 21-6 at halftime, the Mustangs rode their workhorse Campbell Speights to get back into the game.

Speights scored his team’s lone first-half touchdown from 27 yards. In the third quarter he scored twice. Once from a yard out and another from 11 yards away. Cesar Escanane also reached pay dirt thanks to a drive set up by Speights.

Speights was all over the field Friday night. He played on the defense side of the ball in the secondary, alongside receiver Zyan Gregory.

Memorial outscored PSJA 22-7 in the third quarter to tie the game at 28 heading into the final quarter. After Trey Guajardo’s second rushing score, Speights took a kick-return 95 yards to cause another tie at 35.

Bears coach Lupe Rodriguez was happy to see his offense return to their productive ways after scoring only 10 in their win against PSJA North in Week 6. His offense ate up plenty of clock moving the ball on the ground to go ahead for the final time with just more than two minutes remaining.

“Our offense showed a lot of heart and showed a lot of discipline even though it was a back-and-forth game in the second half,” Rodriguez said. “Our running game came through today. J.R. Vasquez was big and Trey. We rode them to the end and it paid off.”

Running back J.R. Vasquez and quarterback Trey Guajardo were the only two ball carriers but they combined for 356 yards and both scored two rushing touchdowns.

“We just kept pushing,” Vasquez said. “The teams see us passing then they just leave the run open. We just opened it up.”

Memorial defensive back Michael Morales intercepted Trey Guajardo. Morales was later ejected for a hit that was deemed targeting in the second half.

Trey Guajardo was dynamic again for the Bears. He accounted for 353 yards of offense, 214 rushing and 139 in the air.

His cousin, Marco Guajardo caught both of his touchdown tosses.

“When I’m in the end zone and just see that ball coming I have that feeling of ‘there it is again, I got another one,’” Marco Guajardo said. “Before the ball even touches my hands. It’s just that feeling, especially with family. I have that faith and trust in him. After every touchdown, he’s the first person I gt to. I say ‘there you go ‘cuz, atta boy’ it’s a perfect throw every time.

On the Prowl: La Joya High keeps rolling, blanks McAllen High

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — La Joya High started fast with a 73-yard touchdown run from quarterback J.R. Rodriguez and never looked back. Junior running back Eddie Villarreal hit the gaps hard for the next three scores as the Coyotes cruised to victory over the McAllen High Bulldogs at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.

The Coyotes came out of the gates quick, scoring on their first play and first three drives, but slowed the pace to claim a 28-0 win.

La Joya improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in District 30-6A. McAllen High fell to 1-5 and 0-3.

Villarreal is up to 15 touchdowns on the season and Thursday’s win was his fourth three-touchdown performance of the year. His 150 yards on the ground was the third time he reached that plateau. The Coyotes opening game, against Roma, was his only game under 100 yards; he had 96.

All of his scores came from close range, two four-yard touchdowns and one from five yards out, something that was an area of concern a year ago.

“Last year we were having trouble punching it in,” Villarreal said. “This year we’ve worked more on punching it in. Last year, we would always drive it up but they would stop us around the 20. This year we fixed that, with our big linemen we just push them back and I just drive it in.”

The bruising junior is one touchdown away from doubling his eight scores in 2017 when he still rushed for 1,630 yards.

La Joya’s offensive line is the key to keeping the lanes open and making sure more of those drives end up in six.

“We’ve grown in staying composed and just executing all of our plays the best as we can,” senior center Damian Tanguma said. “We just bonded as the years passed by and we try to execute everything.”

Senior guard Jose Chavez, who stands at 6-foot-4-inches, says there’s no secret to the hard work and chemistry.

“We spend time together outside the field, on the field, in the locker rooms, in lunch,” Chavez said. “We’re always together, the team. We help each other out and practice hard every day.”

Chavez said the early score, just 24 seconds into the game, gave his unit an early boost.

“It builds us up man,” Chavez said. “We get more hype and we get more confident.”

Junior Alex Rodriguez said those early points are not an excuse to get cocky.

“It feels great but you have to stay composed and focus on the goal,” Rodriguez said. “Got to get ready for the next drive and never get too confident early in the game.”

Coyotes coach Reuben Farias tipped his hat to his line that led to a strong rushing night. La Joya had 302 yards on the ground.

“All of them have at least one or two years under their belt and they work together great,” Farias said. “They’re the base of our offense; they create the holes making it easier for Eddie to run. Even when we don’t get much of a push he finds the way to get some yards.”

La Joya High’s defense picked up the slack when its offense slowed between the third and fourth touchdowns.

Ian Delgado and Charlie Alvarez recorded sacks on Bulldogs quarterbacks. Delgado also came up with a fumble recovery.

McHi split the quarterback duties with both Brian Garza and Robert Amador seeing action. Amador completed the lone Bulldogs pass that went for positive yards, a 32-yard gain to Felipe Magana.

Last year McHi won this same district match-up on the road 35-9. The Coyotes bench boss said in addition to some major subtractions from the Bulldogs roster, his team is more refined and mature.

“First of all they don’t have (Aaron) Nixon and Gunnar (Henderson) those two young men are electric,” Farias said. “Offensively, in our respect, we’ve grown. We’ve worked together. I told the boys this could be a trap game after last week’s sensational win against Memorial. I challenged our boys we better be ready to play or their strong defensive line is going to set the tone.”

Vela swept the match 25-21, 25-15, 25-23 to improve 6-2, the same as the Panthers after the loss. The SaberCats own the 2-0 head-to-head

“I think that this game we came to play and we just wanted it a lot more because it was on our home court and we know what was on the line.” SaberCats senior setter Analisa Campos said after the win.

In the first meeting between the two squads, on Sept. 17, the Panthers were the aggressors and won the first two sets. Vela was able to come from the 0-2 deficit to win the match in five.

This time around Weslaco had similar plans to start quick. The Panthers started the match on a 6-1 run but Vela coach Araceli Ortega called an important timeout that her team positively responded to.

“We knew that Weslaco was going to give us a good match, they were standing in first alone for a reason,” Ortega said. “The errors can accumulate if we don’t fix it. We just told them ‘take a deep breath. We’re not going to start this way. Just try to even it up somewhere and play it 0-0 from there.’”

In the second set, Campos got the SaberCats off to a strong start. After seven points they had the same 6-1 lead that Weslaco enjoyed in the first set. Her serve also kick-started a four-point run later in the set.

Campos, who had 29 assists and 17 digs, was modest about her serve.

“I’m not the strongest server but I am pretty consistent,” Campos said. “I just worry about getting the ball over because I know once we get the ball back we’re able to put it down.”

Junior Glenys Maldonado said the rotation was something that made the team more comfortable.

“That rotation, in particular, is pretty good because the defense is pretty solid,” Maldonado said. “We still have Ana setting up in the front and we got the hitters up in the front too.”

She led the team in kills with 21 in the three sets, Maldonado added 19 digs and two aces.

Maldonado, who is known for hitting, said it was the defense that led to the victory.

“Our defense was a lot more solid,” Maldonado said. “When you get that defense, you get that set then you get that offense. Our defense had a huge impact on today’s play.”

Vela needed to slow the hitting of Panthers Daniella Garza and Illiyah Cantu who had bright moments at points of the match. Weslaco’s offense was stymied by the block and often overhit to avoid SaberCats blockers.

Senior Miranda Negrete was a valuable part of the offense, putting home eight kills. She said the team’s improvement from round one is simply playing cleaner volleyball.

“We kind of just cleaned up our errors. We know we made a lot the first round and we just wanted to polish that up,” Negrete said.

Vela wraps up their schedule with an open date this Saturday followed by matches away against Donna North, Edinburg High and Weslaco East.

“Going to playoffs you want to go on a high note and I think ending district with wins will really set you there,” Negrete said. “It’s important to get on that high and play on that high level so that going into bi-district you don’t fall.”

PSJA North difficult stretch continues with McAllen Rowe

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

PSJA North has been competitive in most of their games this season as they enter week 7 with a 2-4 record and 1-1 in district play.

After a 10-7 defeat to RGVSports.com No. 6 PSJA High last week, the Raiders are in a familiar spot: Taking the positives from a heartbreaking loss and getting set to try to get back on the winning path.

“It’s a very big ballgame for us,” Kaufmann said. “We’re going to have to start winning some of these close ballgames that we’re in right now if we want to get into that playoff race.”

During their eight-loss 2017 season, four losses came by one possession, another two were 10-point defeats.

The attitude is still focused for third-year coach Marcus Kaufmann, whose team will host McAllen Rowe who is 2-0 so far in 30-6A play.

“We’re playing all the big dogs right now; it started with the Bears then we’re playing Rowe and after that it’s Mission.”

Kaufmann’s team is motivated to prove their abilities against the top units in the district.

“That’s the only reason we do this,” Kaufmann said. “We want to be the best and the only way to be the best is to beat the best. After the game (a 34-29 win) against Juarez-Lincoln, we talked to the kids and coaching staff and said ‘every single ballgame the rest of the way is going to be one score’ we just have to be the ones to win by the one score.”

House divided

The Kaufmann name has different meanings depending on where you are in the Upper Valley.

Marcus is the head coach of PSJA North, he formerly coached on Bill Littleton’s staff at McAllen Memorial before his appointment as the Raiders bench boss.

His children, Matthew and Madeline, both starred as student-athletes for the Mustangs before they moved onto to collegiate athletic careers.

His daughter is now coaching track at North after starting her coaching career at McHi.

Monica Kaufmann, his wife, is a high school principal at none other than North’s Week 7 opposing campus: McAllen Rowe.

“If we’re playing Rowe, it’s a lot of smack talk just like it’s going to be against all those McAllens,” Kaufmann said while laughing. “As soon as the game was over with, she started saying now it’s her kids turn to beat up on us.”
