Pirates on patrol: Experienced midfield hopes to take Hidalgo back to State tournament

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

HIDALGO — When it comes to UIL State soccer championships in the Rio Grande Valley, Hidalgo may not have started it all, but the Pirates spearheaded the westward movement.

Brownsville Lopez and Brownsville Porter had pioneered the first championships for the RGV in 2004 and 2006; Hidalgo brought it home to Hidalgo County in 2009 and put the entire state on alert to beware of Valley futbol.

As soon as Hidalgo coach Zeke Morales was handed the championship trophy after a 2-0 win over Mesquite Poteet, he looked into the local television camera and exclaimed: “For the Valley!”

Since then, local soccer has been well-represented on the state’s grandest stage. Three more RGV teams have won state titles since 2009. Porter won a second title and Brownsville Rivera won a 6A crown.

Sharyland High brought home a championship in Class 5A in 2012, the year before the introduction of a sixth class when Sharyland ISD split its sole high school into Sharyland High and Sharyland Pioneer.

La Joya Juarez-Lincoln has established itself as a perennial regional powerhouse. Valley View has been in the state finals, while fellow 4A and district rival Progreso has made the trip to Georgetown the past four seasons; last season McAllen High sent the first RGV girls team to the state tournament.

After all of the growth in the region and watching with pride as the Valley firmly established itself as a soccer gold mine, Hidalgo wants to be selfish — the Pirates want to go back to state.

“It’s (a) very exciting (time.) We’ve been working for it all cross country season, coming every morning to run so we can get better and go to state,” sophomore midfielder Juan Carlos Magdaleno said. “It’s important because when you condition, you’re doing it to run all game and not come out.”

Hidalgo’s constant soccer talent is undeniable, but so is its small size as a program. Because of that, coach Morales asks his soccer team to participate in a fall sport either cross country or football, not only to stay in shape, but to contribute to Pirates athletics.

But when soccer starts…it’s go time. This year, the team will face the challenge of replacing an extremely senior-heavy roster. Many players played their last game in the regional tournament against Liberty Hill.

“This year I have a good mix,” Morales said. “I don’t have as many seniors as I did last year. I had about 14 or 15 seniors last year and about seven or eight were starters.”

Most of the returning players come from the same, crucial part of the pitch — the midfield.

“This year, the good thing for us, where I think we’re going to be very strong, is our midfield,” Morales said. “Everybody in the midfield is coming back. In the game of soccer, if you have a solid midfield, they’re the ones.

Junior midfielder Pedro Orozco admitted he will miss the 2017 graduates, but high expectations don’t leave room for a “rebuild season.”

“That group was really special to me because my first year as a freshman they took me in with a very good attitude and they taught me and inspired me,” Orozco said. “Now they taught me how to move on with my team and we’re going to work hard for state. The goal is always state, no matter where we’re coming from.”

Hidalgo will play in a new-look 31-4A that includes some first-time UIL opponents. Regular foes Hidalgo, Progreso, Grulla and Zapata will be joined by charter school competition as IDEA Quest (Edinburg), IDEA Pike (Weslaco), Vanguard Rembrandt (Pharr) and Vanguard Mozart (Alamo) join the district.

Morales says the new district members are wildcards even to him, but he welcomes the challenge.

“First of all, we’re excited that UIL allowed them, because I think that all kids should have the opportunity. I don’t know what they’re going to be like. I’ve heard that some of those schools have teams that play outside (club soccer). I hope all of them do, because that will only elevate the level of competition. ” Morales said. “If they don’t, and they’re new, we’re just going to have to work with them.”

He said whether the competition is difficult or not, he’ll have his team ready for another postseason run.

“Like everything, we’re going to have to continue to work hard and find ways,” Morales said. “It’s going to be up to me to be creative and find ways to keep playing at a high level, keep them focused and humble at the same time. I don’t care if we won 3-0, 4-0. What matters is we understand that it’s going to get harder, it’s going to get tougher.”

What to watch for in 2019

The top RGV boys’ team from 2017, Valley View, has plenty of returners to try to make a return trip to UIL State. Mario de los Santos might have a difficult time repeating his 70-goal performance from last year as the Tigers move into arguably the state’s toughest district, 32-5A. Strong programs like Valley View, Brownsville Pace, Brownsville Veterans, Brownsville Porter and Brownsville Lopez as well as Edcouch-Elsa, Mercedes and Donna will all battle for four playoff spots.

In class 6A, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln will start a new era without the services of 2017 grads Manuel Castrejon and Gerardo Reyes. Still, the Huskies look to be the class of 30-6A with young players helping the team turn in height for speed. Behind Juarez, 30-6A should be a dogfight with Mission High leading the charge, but McAllen Memorial was a playoff team a season ago and the Mustangs have started 2019 strong.

District 31-6A looks to be wide open once again. The Edinburg schools with jockey for position but have to look out for new challenger, Donna North, which returns an impressive roster.

Last year’s 31-6A champs, PSJA Southwest, won’t have a chance to defend its title, moving to District 31-5A, which creates an intriguing field with PSJA Memorial also joining the group with Sharyland High and Sharyland Pioneer.

In with the familiar: Edinburg Vela aims to turn consistency into success

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN – Edinburg Vela senior defender Alyssa Muniz is experiencing something different as she enters the 2019 soccer season. It’s the first time in her high school career she won’t have a new coach to start the season. The SaberCats will benefit from the continuity of a second season under head coach Americo Cortez.

“With coach Cortez, he teaches us a lot about unity,” Muniz said. “Unity helps the team be together on the field, chemistry, everybody passing it together; and not having any drama at all. He puts everyone where the team needs them, not where they (want to) play.”

Edinburg Vela finished runners-up in District 31-6A a season ago and hosted a bi-district match against Harlingen High last April.

In one of the craziest playoff games in the RGV a season ago, the Cardinals needed overtime to prevail 6-5 in an offensive explosion to eliminate the SaberCats.

Vela returns its best-attacking asset, Taylor Campbell, for her sophomore season after winning 31-6A Offensive Player of the Year honors as a freshman. She notched a hat trick in the bi-district heart-breaker and had 36 total goals during the season.

The sophomore is confident that the returners and newcomers to the team either from JV or even middle school will thrive under more time in the same system.

“Every year it’s just getting more and more stacked,” Campbell said. “So, now everyone’s been under coach Cortez for a year. Now we know how he goes, how he plays. No one is in surprise of what’s going to happen and what’s not.”

Vela boasts a number of juniors and sophomores who already have varsity and playoff experience. Speedy Danya Selber, Odessa Leal and Dayana Cantu return and still haven’t hit their senior year.

Campbell, who plays above the level of most 10th-graders, admitted her team might have taken their foot off the gas after a strong early part of 2018.

“Last year we had a really good start and then once district started we were kind of a little cocky,” Campbell said. “Like, over our heads. This year, we’re coming in strong – 100 percent – and we’re not going to let that happen again. Our goal is to get district champs and at least go further than the first round.”

During the first scrimmages of the 2018-19 season, just before the new year, Edinburg Vela was in McAllen for a tough slate of preseason games.

First, the SaberCats played McAllen High, which last year became the first RGV girls soccer team to reach the state tournament. Then, Vela tried to exorcise its demons when it faced Harlingen.

“We want to play all the good teams at the beginning, that way we can see where they are at,” Cortez said. “This was a good challenge, McHi was third last year in the state it’s a very good team and we wanted to play them.”

Vela stayed close but fell to McHi 2-1, played to a 0-0 draw with Harlingen and topped Laredo United 2-0 in the pre-January scrimmages.
Muniz and the defense will be key to stopping higher powered teams as the season goes on and a potential playoff season emerges.

“After district, we’re going to hopefully have playoffs after that,” Muniz said. “This will help us be more ready for the upcoming teams we’re going to play against hopefully to state. Like McHi, we know they went to state last year so it’s going to help us know where to work on. Either defense or coming back more, having more defensive mids, anything like that. (We can) see our potential within other teams.”

Girls soccer landscape

With the McHi Bulldogs winning the 2018 Class 6A Region IV Tournament and advancing to state in Georgetown, a breath of new hope has reached girls programs around the Valley.

The 2019 season will show whether McHi is head and shoulders above the next best RGV teams or if the gap has shrunk and more contenders have a legitimate shot at regional success.

In class 6A, knocking the Bulldogs off won’t be easy. One of their many impressive attributes on their road to state was the youth of key star players. Texas A&M commit Westyn Henderson and University of Houston commit Ava Alaniz are just juniors entering this season. The Monitor Defensive player of the Year Lexi Gonzalez signed over the summer to play for Oregon State in volleyball. Depth is one thing that sets the Bulldogs apart.

District 30-6A will be an interesting race to watch as McAllen Rowe and McAllen Memorial try to keep up with their crosstown rivals. La Joya Juarez-Lincoln has the potential to follow in the footsteps of their boy’s program and make noise after making the playoffs a season ago. With the addition of PSJA High there are five 2018 playoff teams vying for four spots.

The four Edinburg schools all have the potential to qualify for the playoffs, but they are joined by one of the toughest teams who moved due to realignment, Donna North.

In 31-5A, there are more question marks than answers with Sharyland High saying goodbye to Kaitie Watson and Elise Townsend while their sister campus, Sharyland Pioneer, graduated four-year starter Andrea Reyes. The area is rich with soccer talent but it may take time for a youngster to dominate in the same way. The district will also add PSJA Memorial, PSJA Southwest and La Joya Palmview to provide more depth.

Edcouch-Elsa, Mercedes and Donna High will have a tough mountain to climb as they face the gauntlet of 5A Brownsville teams. Brownsville Pace and Brownsville Veterans should establish themselves as frontrunners.

Class 4A saw playoff winners from Edinburg IDEA Quest, Hidalgo and Grulla in 2018.

McAllen Rowe, Adrian Salinas stave off McHi in district opener

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — McAllen Rowe started hot and finished on fire against rival McAllen High during both teams’ district opener at McHi on Saturday afternoon.

Even though the Warriors weren’t firing on all cylinders, they found another level when necessary to defeat the Bulldogs, 55-46.

“Against McHi it’s always a battle, they’re our rival school,” Rowe senior Adrian Salinas said. “But we knew they were on a losing streak. If we jumped on them early we could have had it but they made a run. Then we made our run at the end of the fourth quarter and that helped us pull out the game.”

Salinas was the hot hand from behind the arc that made sure the Bulldogs didn’t steal the game late. Even though Rowe never trailed, McHi cut the deficit to one point just after halftime and to within one possession in the fourth quarter.

Salinas, who had his senior football season cut short due to broken ribs, nailed two fourth-quarter threes to keep the Warriors comfortably ahead. He finished with 12 points, which all came from nearly the same spot behind the 3-point line.

“Coach really counted on me to make those threes,” Salinas said. “(We were) just moving the ball around, making sure I don’t panic. Shooting from my spots where I’m capable of shooting and just trusting.”

Rowe started the game on a 9-0 run. Darrin Everage had four of his 10 points right off the bat and fellow big man John Galan led all scorers with 14 points.

The junior Galan explained the importance of a low-post presence.

“Being in the post, it opens up spots for everyone else, especially the guards, so I can pass it out,” Galan said. “It gives me the confidence to make those shots.”

While sporting the No. 35 jersey as made famous by lanky Golden State Former Kevin Durant, Galan channeled his idol with multiple shots from the high key.

“In practice, I always go for mid-range (shots), not quite that many threes but I go to the mid-range,” Galan said. “You want to have more shots on the outside so you have more versatility as a shooter.”

All of Rowe’s points came from their starting five, Rowe’s Mark Medrano had nine points and was the only Warrior point-scorer with fewer than double digits.

McHi also benefited from a balanced attack. Jackson Helmcamp led his team with 11 points, while Bryan Argil added 10 and Dylan Suarez had eight. Jaden Conrow, who was guarded by Rowe’s Galan, and Matthew Ibarra both finished with seven.

Veteran Warriors coach Jose Yebra said that the team’s slowdown after controlling the first quarter by a score of 15-6 was a product of McHi fixing some holes.

“I think both teams were playing hard defense,” Yebra said. “We started off hitting the shots and playing well but they adjusted on their defensive side. We kind of struggled a little bit to score but we were able to regroup and get back into it.”

Rowe sophomore Louie Yebra missed some time in the first quarter while attending to a bloody nose that resulted from a scramble for a loose ball. He finished the night with 10 points, including a few difficult drives through the lane.

“That’s all we talk about in practice. It doesn’t matter whether they’re making their run or we’re making our run, we just have to stay positive through everything. We just (need to) make sure we’re playing our game: boxing out, getting rebounds, playing defense and our offense will come through no matter what.”

McHi will travel to Mission to face the Mission Eagles next outing while Rowe will host La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, both on Jan. 2.
