McHi narrows coaching list to three finalists

STAFF REPORT

The McAllen Independent School district has reportedly narrowed down its choices for the next McHi Bulldogs head football coach/boys athletic coordinator according to sources close to the hiring process.

Weslaco High offensive coordinator Patrick Shelby, Edinburg Vela offensive coordinator Sean Van de Merghel and former San Benito head coach and current Victoria East assistant, Spencer Gantt are three finalists to replace Kevin Brewer, according to multiple sources.

District athletic director Paula Gonzalez is expected to recommend a hire at a board meeting on Monday. According to an applicant list provided by the school district 48 coaches applied for the position.

Shelby has been the Panthers OC for the previous two seasons. He worked alongside Michael Salinas both at Weslaco and before the 2017 season at Vela.

Weslaco finished with an 11-2 record, winning two playoff games in 2018. Salinas announced his resignation as head coach earlier this month.

Van de Merghel is coming off a second season with the SaberCats. He joined John Campbell to replace the Salinas/Shelby head coach/offensive coordinator. Vela has been arguably the Valley’s best offense the last two seasons, both playoff runs ended at the hands of Austin Westlake in the regional semifinal.

Spencer Gannt is the lone finalist coaching outside of the RGV, but he hasn’t been gone for long.

Gannt coached the Greyhounds from 2009 to 2013 and accumulated a 28-26 record. The team made the playoffs in his first three seasons at the helm, but did not reach the postseason in his final two years at SB. He was also in the lower Valley at Los Fresnos prior to his role at San Benito.

Donna North controls play in win over McAllen Memorial

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

DONNA — The Donna North Chiefs attacked, pestered and penetrated the McAllen Memorial backline for the first 10 minutes of their non-district meeting Tuesday night.

In the 11th minute, the Mustangs foundation finally gave way and the Chiefs were off and running on their first of three tallies.

North prevailed 3-1 over Memorial on home turf on a crisp, damp evening.

Midfielder Arturo Gonzalez was short and to the point about what makes his team dangerous.

“We’re really good on attacking, we have really good strikers and midfield,” Gonzalez said. “I think that makes it hard for the opposing defense to stop us.”

On the Chiefs’ fourth shot in the opening three minutes, the team’s leading scorer Juan Mendez broke the scoreless tie. The goal came after Rigoberto Escobar had put a ball behind the keeper but just left of the goal post.

Unfortunately for Mendez, he was not able to finish the game due to an injury while attempting to cross the ball on the slick surface. He didn’t return to the match, but his pain came from his ankle and not the knee as initially feared.

Escobar, the team’s captain, said no matter who the team plays, an early onslaught is key to finding the twine first.

“Once we score the first goal we feel more comfortable, we have the ball more,” Gonzalez said.

Control was the name of the game for North. The Chiefs’ ball handling was surgical in the first 40 minutes of action. With 18:42 on the first half clock, Danny Trejo was able to find room between the legs of the Memorial goalie to double the lead.

Nifty footwork didn’t always turn into an offensive opportunity, but almost every successful skilled play did allow for more time and space for the dribbler. Passes made with both feet in the air and touches with much more finesse than power were commonplace for the Chiefs.

Chiefs coach Andres Sanchez explained after the game that much of his varsity group has been on the team since their freshman year, giving them three-to-four years of chemistry.

“We gathered more experience and better communication,” Escobar said through a translator. “We played better together as a result of all the games we’ve played together.”

In the first half, McAllen Memorial was unable to possess the ball for long enough to create sustained pressure or mount any dangerous attacks. Most of the difficulties on offense came from aggressive Chiefs defenders closing in on passes and limiting open field.

“It’s important because we don’t want any surprises at the end,” Sanchez said. “I think (Memorial’s) strength was their offense. They play really well from the midfield and up. The defense was the area we think we had the advantage.”

The Mustangs came out of halftime with sharper movement on offense and even a number of threats at ending the shutout. Chiefs’ keeper Jose Luis Mares and the defenders in front of him, however, were up to the task.

With 25:55 to play, Mares stuffed Jorge Torres’s chance right on the doorstep of the six-yard box. Less than five minutes later, Mares made a diving stop to preserve his clean sheet.

Diego Preciado came in to relieve Mares after the flurry of Mustangs chances.

With less than three minutes to play, the Mustangs found their offense. Omar Salazar headed the ball just out of the reach of Preciado.

Despite being outplayed for much of the match, the goal to make the game 2-1 gave Memorial new life.

The period of hope was cut short when Luis Olivas placed a chipped shot clean over the head of Memorial’s Santiago Guerrero, who was Gustavo Moreno’s halftime replacement in net.

Edinburg High Bobcats hold off Edcouch-Elsa in E-E championship match

Edinburg Bobcats hold off Edcouch-Elsa in E-E finale

ELSA — Two trends faced each other in the championship match of the Edcouch-Elsa girls soccer tournament: Edinburg High’s ability to keep opponents off the score sheet and E-E’s affinity for using penalty kicks to decide their matches.

Neither streak lasted the evening as Edinburg High prevailed 3-2 over host Edcouch-Elsa.

“It’s amazing,” EHS senior captain Debanhi Rodriguez said. “It’s our first final and the first time we won first place. Everyone on our team did great.”

Edinburg High didn’t allow a goal in regulation on its way to the tournament championship.

The only goals to get past keeper Kristen Salinas prior to the final was when the Jackets and Bobcats met in the group round Thursday when EHS won 1-0 in PKs. Recent familiarity with each other made for an intense, and at times, chippy, final.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” Senior Regina Monroy said. “We have tied, lost and won against them. So we’re just happy we won.”

The first half almost concluded without a goal on the board but a free-kick in the last minute gave EHS an opportunity to break through.

Monroy shook loose in the box and got her head on freshman Miriela Munoz’s free kick in the penalty area and with 45 seconds to play the Bobcats had the lead.

“It’s amazing, for me to score in my last year and in a final,” Senior Monroy said. “It just feels great.”

Edinburg’s 1-0 lead at the break was another period without conceding a goal in Elsa.

“Defense is going to win the championships, the offense is going to win the games,” Edinburg coach Cerjio Elizararraz said. “This was a championship game, our defense came through.”

Sophomore goalie Kristen Salinas explained that her low goals against per game is thanks to the team in front of her.

“It definitely has to do with my midfield and my defense, they work really hard together,” Salinas said. They work really well together and they talk really well. Sometimes I don’t have to touch the ball at all. Thank you defense. I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”

With 15:13 to play, E-E’s Terry Gallegos finally got a regulation goal past Salinas. Jackets sophomore Vanessa Cerda headed a ball on the net which was initially grabbed but Gallegos was able to jar the ball loose and hit it home.

The momentum swing didn’t last long because the Bobcats answered quick.

Two minutes and eight seconds later Rodriguez stood over a free kick from approximately 25 feet. She broke the tie with a kick over the head over E-E’s Anissa Cavazos in goal.

Minutes later, sophomore Leah Sanchez booted home a clever chip over E-E’s netminder.

“Everybody has their own talents,” Rodriguez said of the combo of youth and experience on the roster. “We just try to make the team work together.”

The Jackets didn’t go quietly; Jada de los Santos scored a long-range goal but the ‘Cats defense was able to hold off the late surge from the home team.
