Frostbitten: McAllen High wins up and down game against McAllen Memorial

By NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF REPORT

McALLEN — The showdown between McAllen High and McAllen Memorial girls soccer teams was nearly 11 months in the making.

The Mustangs wanted to erase the taste of last season’s 9-1 loss in the second meeting between the two schools last March. The Bulldogs were aiming to turn last year’s trip to state into another dominant district campaign.

Not even temperatures dipping into the 40s could cancel the contest, or even deter fan by both sides from packing the stands to watch the RGVSports.com’s No. 1 (Memorial) and No. 2 (McHi) teams collide.

After 80 hard-fought minutes and three total penalties, McAllen High held their ground and won, 3-2, Friday at Boxer Hernandez Stadium at McAllen Memorial.

“ Freshman year, sophomore year and junior year, we had a PK against Memorial, so no one was surprised when they called the first one,” McHi senior defender Emily Gurwitz said. “I definitely was surprised when they called the second (penalty); it’s rare to have two in a game. When they called the third one, I was shocked.”

The third penalty of the match, which was whistled with four minutes to play, was the first time McHi had a chance to shoot, and coach Pat Arney called Gurwitz’s No. 22 to take the attempt.

Gurwitz drilled the shot and lifted McHi to their 42nd consecutive district victory.

“ I’ve been taken them in practice and our preseason games, so I was happy to step up for my team,” Gurwitz said. “I have to give credit to Lexi (Gonzalez) because in practice we take shots on her, and she’s the best goalkeeper I’ve ever played with or played against.”

Even though Gonzalez lifted her team to new heights a season ago, she wasn’t able to stop either of Memorial forward Andrea Santana’s penalty shots.

The game started at a breakneck pace. The Bulldogs were the aggressors out of the gates, which led to the games first tally just 3:21 in.

Sophia Soto rocketed a shot past the keeper, but it clanked off the crossbar. Bulldogs junior Ava Alanis didn’t waste the opportunities, however, wiring a shot near post for the goal.

The first penalty against the Bulldogs came with 23:52 to play. Memorial had started to earn more possession and chances, which culminated with Geo Hernandez being knocked down in the box.

Santana scored her first to equalize.

McHi freshman Mallory Henderson nearly gave her team the lead again with 4:30 before the break, but her shot sailed over the bar.

After both teams found the scoreboard, the match got much tighter. Memorial owned possession in the first half, but after the break the Bulldogs stayed on the ball more often.

Sophia Soto, who set up the first goal, scored one of her own with 13:46 to play on a centering pass that she put a cleat on to trickle past the keeper.

Four minutes later, Memorial found themselves on the penalty spot again. Even though the McHi crowd was up in arms, a hard bump sent the attacker to the turf and the whistle was blown.

Santana made no mistake and knotted the score once again.

Even though Gonzalez was visibly frustrated, she stood tall in crunch time with three saves at 2-2, including tipping a shot aiming top shelf over the bar.

“ I just had to get the goals and get it out of my head and focus on the next play so we can try to score again,” Gonzalez said. “They (Memorial) can take any shots from anywhere, but I did my best to try to stop all the kicks that came. They honestly had so many good shots.”

The foul that set up Gurwitz’s tally was disputed by the home crowd, and it was arguably not the hardest tackle of the evening. After the goal, McHi’s resolve was tested with less than five minutes.

“ Memorial…undefeated. They’ve been playing great, and they definitely deserved their No. 1 ranking,” Arney said. “We saw them come at us over and over and over again. I think we’re a little unlucky with two PKs. We were able to adapt a little bit to them. They’re a great team. They’re hard to stop.”

There wasn’t much that separated both units, but McHi’s win gives it a 4-0 district record. Memorial drops to 3-1.

The teams will meet again March 5 at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium. Both the Bulldogs and Mustangs still have a date pending with upstart La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, which is unblemished in 30-6A play.

McAllen High’s Aniah Chaleff-Reyna to hurdle for Baylor

BY NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Aniah Chaleff-Reyna first visited the campus of Baylor when she was in elementary school, but her family’s history in Waco goes back decades.

With her coaches and teammates nearby, Chaleff-Reyna signed to compete in hurdles for the Bears track & field team.

She will compete at the same school her grandfather, Walter Reyna, won a three-mile Southwestern Conference championship in 1968.

“ He’s always taken me to meets there, and games, so I’ve always been very into Baylor,” Chaleff-Reyna said. “I always just wanted to go there, even if it wasn’t to run track. I just wanted to make him proud; my grandpa is a huge part of my life.”

The McAllen High senior said despite being around the sport of track for many years, last season was when her dreams started to become within reach.

“ I realized that I could actually compete at the college level last year,” Chaleff-Reyna said. “My sophomore and freshman year, I messed around a lot. Never really tried. Last year we got a new coach, and she was really hard on me.”

She set her personal mark of 15.21 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and ran a 46.90 in the 300-meter hurdles — both at the RGVCA Meet of Champions finals. Last season as a junior, she also set new personal bests in the high jump and long jump.

What could have been a long junior campaign was cut short. The future Baylor runner is using everything as motivation.

“ I fell at area and I was predicted to probably win regionals and go to state,” Chaleff-Reyna said. “From that point on, until now, I was just training. Outside of school, I was just running in the summer, going to hurdle practices a few times a week.”

Walter Reyna was beaming, dressed in all green at the signing ceremony. The former collegiate athlete said that the sport has always been a bond between himself and Aniah.

“ I’ve always kept up with the Big 12 now and with the world on the internet,” Reyna said. “I’ve taken her since she was a kid to all the big track meets — the NCAA’s, the Olympic trials — so it’s been a big part (of the family).”

“ It’s unbelievable,” Reyna said. “I never dreamed this would happen. I thought maybe a smaller school, but this is pretty special. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime, but the most important thing is that she uses this as a means to an end to get her degree.”

“ Her mom, who raised her, she ran track here at McHi, that’s where that came from,” her father, Daniel Reyna, said. “My dad is just a bigger lover of track. It’s kind of come full circle now, seeing her grow up, doing hurdles in junior high and here at McHi. It’s been a great blessing.”

Chaleff-Reyna is the second Bulldogs track athlete with a signing ceremony in recent weeks. High jumper Hannah Kelly signed to Duke a week prior.

McHi girls coach Luis Cantu said the two standouts signing to well-known NCAA Div. I teams will work wonders for his younger athletes.

“ It’s a huge stepping stone for those freshmen and underclassmen that we have to see seniors. Obviously Hannah going to Duke, and now Aniah going to Baylor, it’s huge for our program, for the development of our program,” Cantu said. “Six years ago, there were maybe 30 girls in the program. Now there are 70 girls in the program.”

PSJA High wrestling wins big at district tourney

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

SAN JUAN — PSJA High was on a mission at the District 16-6A wrestling tournament, and that was to defend the home mats.

The Bears sent eight girls to the championship mats and walked away with six individual championships and a golden trophy for the team title.

Destiny Baltierra was one of two repeat champions for PSJA High.

A season ago, she was a state qualifier. But this time around, she had to fight through an injury and a higher weight class to advance.

She was unstoppable in the 185-pound division and needed just two minutes and 26 seconds to win and improve her season record to 37-1.

“ In this wrestling sport, you have to be mentally strong,” Baltierra said. “Who cares about the body? If you go in not thinking clearly, you’re really going to lose. I don’t think about the pain, just about that district title that I always wanted. I want to be known as Destiny Baltierra: two-time district champ — 165, 185, it doesn’t matter.”

Bears sophomore Priscilla Luevano was a first-time champion. The opening round of her first-place bout was able to end, but the 128-pound grappler was able to get in position to earn a fall (or pin) and defeat Donna North’s Janelle Sandoval.

“ My opinion is that I find it better with it a pin because it shows more, ‘OK, you’re in the mat and you’re here to do what you practiced for,’” Luevano said. “We all support each other. It’s a big thing for all of us. We’re going to go (to regionals) and we’re going to show them who we are.”

The Bears will advance six champions, two silver medalists and an alternate.

Donna North’s girls team were champions in 2018. This year, they took a slight step back, finishing behind PSJA High (178) and San Benito (104).

Still, the Chiefs were well-represented in the championship round, starting with their small and mighty 95-pounder, Monica Resendez.

The junior is a defending champion in the weight class, but a long cut across her face in the final match caused a delay.

“ It made me emotional. I wanted to tear up a little bit because I got cut,” Resendez said. “I was like, “Oh my gosh, I’m not going to be able to see through one eye.’ Luckily, my coach relaxed me. The little break to fix the blood it really helped a lot to ease my mind a little bit.”

Resendez was able to mostly ignore the cut and went on to pin Itzel Paredes of Los Fresnos early in the second round.

“ She was tough. She was very strong, but like I say, you can’t let that affect your way of thinking,” Resendez said. “I felt like I had to win this one because last year was my first year. I can’t use the excuse of, ‘I barely got in wrestling.’ I’ve been working at this.”

San Benito’s Viviana Torres was a force at 138 pounds. Her win in the championship match took only 53 seconds as she moves to 25-0 on the season.

Los Fresnos’ boys won the team crown, but the Bears were just steps behind. The Falcons finished with 208.5, the Bears had 195 and Weslaco East tallied 158.0.

For the PSJA High boys junior Maximiliano Barrera earned first place in the 113-pound bracket in a 17-5 major decision over Los Fresnos’ Eduardo Castellanos.

“ For JV district, I didn’t wrestle for that whole week, so I pigged out that whole week. So this week I was at 132 and I had to cut it all down,” Maximiliano said. “I was trying to keep him down most of the time, but he did slip out a couple of times. My job was to keep him down and win that match. Now whatever happens at regionals, happens.”

Michael Solis won his first district crown in the 170-pound division. Solis earned a fall in the final 30 seconds of his match against Eduardo Cavazos from Los Fresnos.

Daniel Lopez of PSJA North defeated Christian Perez from Weslaco East in the 126-pound weight class. The Raiders won another North-East showdown in the next class up when Donovan Herrera downed the Wildcats’ Cristhian Gomez 13-6.

Weslaco East senior Shawn De La Rosa won his first district championship after finishing second as a sophomore and junior.

“ It really taught me to not think about the match too much. Just go in there and wrestle,” de la Rosa said. “A lot of my matches that I’ve been showing up in, the wrestlers were really good and it was a lot in my mind. It’s an amazing feeling being on top right now. I’m excited for next week.”

The mid-Valley also had a winner at 182-pounds with Samuel Shelley, who defeated Eloy Guerrero from Los Fresnos. Weslaco East’s Jesus Lozano defeated PSJA High’s Joshua Sanchez in the 285-pound district title match.

Sharyland Pioneer boys dominate, girls come from behind to sweep 16-5A wrestling districts

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER
MISSION — The Sharyland Pioneer boys had already taken care of business on day two of the District 16-5A Wrestling Tournament at Sharyland High School on Thursday, but the Diamondbacks weren’t done.

The girls of Pioneer needed their five wrestlers in the medal round to perform to catch Valley View and they did just that.

A trio of sophomores: Alejandra Briere-Segovia, Emily Trevino and Camila Flores all earned falls (also known as pins) to give their team enough points to overtake the Tigers and sweep both team titles.

Even with Pioneer in the lead, the match of the day between Flores and Valley View’s Karyme Garza in the 215-pound division felt like the match to decide which school would take home the hardware.

“Since we’re such a small girl team and most of the guys always get first place, I didn’t want to let them down,” Flores said. “I’ve wrestled before but anything can go wrong. I just needed to focus a lot. Alejandra and Emily are usually the really good wrestlers on this team and I want to be a part of that too.”

All three went to state as freshmen.

“It feels amazing, we’ve been working hard,” Trevino said. “It’s tough, I just have to keep on pushing myself. I’m proud of myself and all of my teammates.

Flores Briere-Segovia (102) and Trevino (119) both pinned their opponents in the first round of the championship match.

“Today, I feel really good about myself because I applied the training I was working really hard for,” Briere-Segovia said. “There’s really nothing else I can say, I did everything I could. I went out here to win and that’s what I did.”

Valley View coach Cole Alexander was pleased with his team’s breakout tournament in the program’s infancy.

“I’m extremely proud of our girls because this is only our second year as a program,” Alexander said. “For girls that have limited experience they just wrestled with a lot of heart. We are very fortunate to have a very good core, many of them are sophomores. We have a good group of young people coming up behind them.”

Rio Grande City senior grappler Samantha Rodriguez won her second district title in as many years in the 110-pound division.

“I just told myself ‘I gotta do this, I have to win. last year I won district, I didn’t want someone to take this away from me, it’s my senior year,” Rodriguez said of the mentality before the championship match.

Other individual champions were: Edcouch-Elsa’s Michelle Zavala at 95 pounds, Carolyn Villarreal of Grulla at 128, Mia Sanchez from Mission Veterans (138), Ashley Aleman of La Joya Palmview (148), Judith Rivals (165) from Palmview and Donna High’s Precious Hernandez, who is a repeat champion.

The Pioneer boys already had a sizeable advantage heading into the medal rounds in the 16-5A district wrestling tournament at Sharyland High School. Still, it was nice to earn individual championships in emphatic fashion.

Jose Rodriguez (145) and Angel Resio (152) earned back-to-back pins to essentially cement the championship.

“It just shows that we put in a lot of work, it was a long year so it feels great to have it all come together,” Rodriguez said.

Resio’s victory came in 41 seconds

“It feels like a dream, it’s awesome to be part of this Diamondbacks team,” Resio said.

Pioneer head coach Richard Eckley said he knew his team was in strong position entering, but wins in tight contests motivated his athletes.

“The kids won every 50-50 match,” Eckley said. “Every toss up our kids found a way to perform at a level for some of them I’ve never seen before at the perfect right time. We made wrestling a momentum sport today.”

Ethan Garza from Pioneer was also an individual champion at 220 pounds.

PSJA Memorial’s Darian Espinoza won the 138-pound district title with a pin over Rio Grande City’s Michael Montalvo.

The senior was grateful to win his first title in his final season on the mat.”

“A blessing, that’s for sure,” Espinoza said. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without God first and foremost. I am pretty pumped up. A bunch of practice and sweat, that’s for sure, and dedication.”

The Wolverines also had a champion at 106 pounds in Abel Alvarado, his finalist opponent, Pioneer’s Diego Serna was injured and didn’t compete in the last match.

Grulla, one of the two Starr County campuses with storied wrestling program had a lone individual champ. Roy Cavazos defeated RGC’s Rene Trevino.

Cavazos had a 4-0 lead for most of the match, but in the third and final round Trevino battled for an advantageous position and earned three points to close the gap to one. Grulla’s senior eventually found an opportunity to earn a pin a win.

“I feel it ended a long feud between us, like who’s better,” Cavazos said. “When I shifted, to the bottom, I was like ‘What did I get myself into?’ It was a stupid mistake that I did that little simple roll and I’m in the bottom but I kept on going.”

Trevino still has an opportunity to get the last laugh as they both advance to Austin next weekend.

The Rio Rattlers saw Elias Sanchez win his second district championship in three seasons in the 113 division. Andres Martinez also won an individual title at 132 pounds for RGC.

Even though Sharyland High finished fifth, the Rattlers had a lot to cheer about when Gabriel Martinez pinned PSJA Memorial’s Mark Gutierrez in the third round, just 22 seconds before the match was set to end.

“It was amazing to know that everyone here was supporting me, it was great,” Martinez said after winning his second district title. “It’s great to know that I can go further and better my school, to put my school out there.”

Valley View’s young program was not the only up-and-coming programs to make noise in Mission. Edcouch-Elsa’s Carlos Neves and Erasmo Uresti won championships at 160 and 170-pounds respectively.

The top four wrestlers will advance to the Class 5A Region IV Tournament next weekend in Austin’s Delco Center.

Sharyland High rides Alonso Gonzalez to blowout over Pioneer

NATHANIEL MATA | STAFF WRITER

MISSION – Sharyland junior Alonso Gonzalez had zero goals entering Tuesday’s district matchup against rivals Sharyland Pioneer.

He walked off the field to a standing ovation and seven, yes, seven goals to his name in just over an hour of time on the field.

Once he sat down the Rattlers scored three more goals to complete the 10-0 route of the Diamondbacks and improve to 3-0 in district play.

Gonzalez said he’s used to starting off in bunches, but wasn’t expecting such a fruitful outing.

“I hadn’t scored all season and usually this happens,” Gonzalez said. “The first goal that’s where I start to get momentum so I kind of knew I was going to score two or three, but never seven.”

Gonzalez scored a rocket of a shot from long range in the first few minutes to start the action. He’d go on to score on a 2 v 1 against a defender, score after dribbling around the keeper and scored his fourth of the first half on a flying header.

He had a double hat trick with 24 minutes to play in the game. He scored his seventh before taking a seat for the night.

Gonzalez had a similar game last season but not of the same magnitude.

“No I think I beat my record by one this time,” Gonzalez said. “It was last year, but it was with the J.V., not with the varsity.”

Sharyland’s Aldo Rosales, Marcelo Garza and Luis Delgado helped the Rattlers reach double digits late.

Veterans Rattlers coach Rev Hernandez had trouble putting the performance into words.

“It’s just one of those nights, I guess it was his night,” Hernandez said. “I know as a forward you got to score but today he outdid himself.”

Even though Sharyland is 3-0 so far, Hernandez knows that the district season is too young to start calling themselves title favorites.

“It’s just too early, we’re on the third game,” Hernandez said. “I see the district very even This is just the beginning. Once we get to the middle next week everyone’s going to get there. Tonight was our night but I know with the people they have, they players they have, the coaches they have they’re going to come back.”
