A Silent Leader: Actions speak louder than words for Alanis, seasoned Wolverines

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

ALAMO — In 2016, PSJA Memorial pulled off one of the biggest shockers in Texas softball.

The Wolverines entered their three-game bi-district round series against San Benito as the clear underdogs. The Greyhounds had everything going for them. They had only one loss on the season, were the No. 1 ranked team in the Valley, the No. 4 Class 6A team statewide and No. 16 in USA Today’s top 25 nationwide softball power rankings. On the other side, the Wolverines had a losing record as their district’s No. 4 seed.

PSJA Memorial lost the first game of the series, but roared back to take the next two games and the series from San Benito. The Wolverines continued to turn heads, finishing in the third round of the playoffs.

“It was a really fun experience,” PSJA Memorial senior outfielder Kristy Alanis said. “I want the rest of our underclassmen to experience that like we did. It was crazy seeing all the fans coming and filling the stands up. It was pretty cool.”

Alanis was a freshman three years ago, but she wasn’t the only freshman thrust into the spotlight during the Wolverines’ 2016 postseason run. Catcher Victoria Maldonado is another senior tasked with bringing up the younger Wolverines.

“It’s a big role for all of us, but we have a lot of fun with the underclassmen,” Alanis said. “I’ve gained a lot of confidence over the years because of the seniors that were around during my freshman year. I know that really helped me, so it’s our job to make sure they are doing their part, but also have fun with them too. I feel like they enjoy having us around.”

As a senior, a lot rides on Alanis’ shoulders. Last season, Alanis showed off her talents on the field and at the plate.

Alanis was selected as an All-Area Second Team performer by The Monitor in 2018. She hit .521 and scored 49 runs from the leadoff spot in the Wolverines’ lineup. She also flashed the leather in center field with a .988 fielding percentage.

“It just comes to practicing a lot and not being afraid of diving,” Alanis said. “I have the mentality that I’m not going to let any ball drop if it comes in front of me. That mentality has helped out a lot. As a leadoff hitter, the way I start is the way the rest of the girls are going to start. It gets the game and our offense going.”

Alanis lived up to her high standards Tuesday against Sharyland Pioneer. She led off the first inning with a walk and later came around to score the game’s first run. Alanis was the first of PSJA Memorial’s 16 runs scored in the inning.

Later in the first, she cleared the bases with a three-run triple. In the bottom of the third, Alanis’ single brought home the final PSJA Memorial run of the night in its 17-2 win against the Diamondbacks.

“She’s a silent leader — that’s what I’ll call her,” PSJA Memorial interim softball coach Raquel Barbosa said. “She’s not a vocal leader, but she hustles out on the field and leads by example. If I ask her to do something, she does it without hesitation. Leading by example is the biggest role she plays on this team because she sets the example for the younger ones. It doesn’t matter whether it’s raining or not. She always shows up.”

The Wolverines came into the 2019 preseason heralded as one of the top teams in the Valley. Former coach Gilberto Rodriguez, PSJA Memorial’s coach during its Cinderella run in 2016, was reassigned earlier in non-district competition after it was discovered an ineligible player saw the field in three games for the Wolverines. PSJA ISD tabbed Barbosa, one of Rodriguez’s assistants, as the interim for the remainder of the season.

PSJA Memorial (14-6-1, 5-0) couldn’t carry over any 2016 playoff mojo into 2017 and 2018, losing in the first round of the postseason in back-to-back years. Despite losing their coach and adjusting to a new district (31-5A), the Wolverines are still looking to do some serious damage.

“(District) 31-6A was really hard, but I think coming down (to 31-5A) was good for us,” Alanis said. “We want to win the district, of course, go really far in the playoffs and hopefully make it to state.”

Heavy Downpour: PSJA Memorial dismantles Sharyland Pioneer in battle for first place

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

ALAMO — It was billed as a matchup between two favorites to win District 31-5A. Sharyland Pioneer and PSJA Memorial entered the week at 4-0 and in a tie for the top spot.

While rain or the threat of rain postponed several district games Tuesday, the real heavy rain took place on the diamond in Alamo.

PSJA Memorial jumped on Sharyland Pioneer in the first inning and did not relent. The Wolverines batted around twice in the bottom half of the frame before the Diamondbacks ended the inning.

At that point, PSJA Memorial’s first 16 batters sent to the plate all reached base and came around to score in the first. The Wolverines seized control of the district lead in a three-inning 17-2 win Tuesday night.

“I’ve never seen anything like this (first inning),” PSJA Memorial interim softball coach Raquel Barbosa said. “They knew that were playing great competition in (Sharyland) Pioneer. They were eager to play and eager to get their bats started. We’re just blessed with great talent.”

Wolverines center fielder Kristy Alanis started the first inning with a walk off Diamondback left-handed freshman Ilyssa Casanova. PSJA Memorial loaded the bases with nobody out before cleanup hitter Chelsea Salinas cleared the bases with a three-run triple.

The Wolverines (5-0 in district) continued to wreak havoc on Casanova, who exited the inning without recording an out. She was charged with seven runs, six of which were earned, on five hits.

Senior pitcher Madison Sparks, who was Pioneer’s starter four days earlier against Mission Veterans, stepped in for Casanova but had little fortune herself. PSJA Memorial loaded the bases again in Alanis’ second at-bat of the inning. Alanis followed Salinas’ lead with a three-run triple of her own to put the Wolverines up 9-0.

Later in the first, second baseman Elyssa Elizondo threw more gas on the fire with a two-run triple. The three-bagger bumped the Wolverine lead to 15-0.

“Coming from such a tough district (31-6A) to this one, we didn’t know what to expect,” Elizondo said. “We expected a challenge, but we didn’t know who to expect it from. We knew Pioneer would be one of our toughest opponents, so we decided to come out hyped. That helped us score those 16 runs in the first inning.”

The Diamondbacks (13-8, 4-1) had their weakest performance of the district season. They didn’t get their first hit of the game until Andrea Ortiz singled with one out in the third inning. Misjudged fly balls and ground balls extended the carousel of Wolverines entering the batter’s box in the first.

“We didn’t come out to play today.” Sharyland Pioneer coach Orlando Garcia said. “It started off bad for us, especially in the circle. They (PSJA Memorial) were hitting the ball the way they had to hit the ball and we’ve got to be prepared to play teams that way. We’ll see what kind of character our girls bring to the next game. Hopefully, we can bounce back from something like this.”

PSJA Memorial will be on the road Friday at Mission Veterans. As hyped as the Wolverines were Tuesday, it will be Barbosa’s responsibility to bring the same energy out of her players.

“These kids need to keep working hard,” Barbosa said. “I tell them to always be focused, no matter who the opponent it is. We can’t let up because it’s our first time in this district and I need to know what the other teams have, as well. We’ll need to start off strong again.”

Spring Break Sweep: Sharyland Pioneer gets out to large lead, holds on to beat Mission Veterans

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — The Spring Break district schedule showed no mercy to the Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks.

On Tuesday, Sharyland Pioneer trailed Sharyland High by four runs late before rallying to down the Rattlers in its last at bat of a Snakeskin Classic matchup that took three hours. Less than 48 hours later, the Diamondbacks successfully defended their home-field advantage in a 7-5 victory Thursday over crosstown rival Mission Veterans.

“It was tough already, but then you remember that it’s Spring Break week, as well,” Sharyland Pioneer coach Orlando Garcia said. “We started off with Shary(land High), and that was a tremendous game, and we finished it off with Mission Vets, who’s traditionally good. It’s just a matter of keeping these girls focused. We do have a lot of young girls. Sometimes, we’ll have only one senior on the field at any given time. We have a lot of youth, but a lot of youth that knows how to play softball.”

The Diamondback offense jumped on Mission Veterans pitcher Valerie Alvarado early. Center fielder Ilianna Casanova brought home the game’s first run with a bunt single in the first inning that scored Caitlyn Handy. Handy reached base when she was hit by a pitch with one out.

Sharyland Pioneer tacked on three more runs in the second inning. Handy drove in two with a triple and catcher Alexia Hernandez brought another runner home on a bunt to make it 4-0.

Casanova was clutch again in the fourth inning. Her two-run single pushed the Diamondback advantage to 6-0.

“I just come in and work hard with my teammates,” Casanova said. “They give me and we give each other the confidence to work toward the goals that we want.”

“Ilianna came up big against Sharyland (High) too,” Garcia said. “We had two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh. She hit the ball to the fence and got a double out of it. She’s an experienced player for us as a junior. It helps us because players like that have to come through. We’ve been trying to push to the girls that it’s not about the long ball. Let’s just get those singles and doubles, move girls around and we’ll be OK. We’ve got some speed, so we kind of lean on that a little bit to get us by.”

Mission Veterans got itself back in the game on two Sharyland Pioneer errors. After pinch hitter Dulce Rangel reached on an error to start the fifth, right fielder Natalia Cardenas doubled her in to score.

Later in the fifth, Sharyland Pioneer pitcher Madison Sparks struck out Jazmine Villarreal for the second out of the inning. After the strikeout, Hernandez tried to throw out a runner at third base, but her toss went down the left field line. The error led to Priscilla Gonzalez and Cardenas scoring to make it 6-3.

Sparks ran into more trouble in the sixth when Patriots center fielder Stephanie Torres clubbed a two-run home run over the left field wall to bring Mission Veterans within a run.

The Sharyland Pioneer lead had mostly evaporated, but Garcia had the confidence to keep the ball in Sparks’ hand.

“I had to overcome that mental battle. I had to brush off those mistakes and worry about the next batter because I couldn’t change what already happened,” Sparks said. “I knew I had a great group of girls behind to help me on defense. We all had to stay humble, work through it and good things were going to happen. It did tonight.”

“Last year, she (Madison) didn’t have a good outing against Mission Vets and we talked about it before tonight’s game. Barring any injury, I told her, ‘This is your game,’” Garcia said. “She wanted to finish this game. We allowed her to finish the game and it worked out for us.”

Mission Veterans (6-14, 2-2) had one last gasp in the seventh. The Patriots had runners on first and second with two outs, but Arielle Quijada grounded a ball back to Sparks to end the game.

“I was hoping for a one-run score going into our last at bat, but we fought back,” Mission Veterans coach Vivian Ray said. “We had kids where we wanted them, in scoring position. Then it was about getting them across the plate. They played good defense. We played good defense, too, but I think we need to get better at it.”
