Coming of Age: Juniors take leadership role on young La Joya High squad

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

LA JOYA — The La Joya High softball team had a lot going for it last season.

The Coyotes were a senior-laden ball club that banded together and dominated District 30-6A with a 12-0 record.

But 2019 was going to be an entirely different animal. Five starters, including top run producers Alexandria Alaniz and Monica Garcia, as well as ace Sabrina Salinas, moved on after graduation. Some on the outside may have thought they were in for a rebuilding year.

Leslie Ochoa and Jessica Reyna, who soaked in the district champion experience as sophomores, were looked at to lead a team flush with newcomers.

“It was tough losing seven seniors with most of them as starters,” Ochoa said. “When coach (Carlos Rodriguez) said that we would have a whole new team, it was hard to deal with. We had a good team last year and now it meant that we all had to step it up. I tried taking the initiative of being a team captain, and it didn’t work at first. I was a bit shaky the first few games. I was still nervous about it. I’ve been helping out wherever I can, whether it’s with the infielders or the outfielders.”

According to Rodriguez, his “whole new team” couldn’t truly get off the ground when practice started in January.

“What people don’t know about these two kids (Ochoa and Reyna) is that there were injuries in the offseason,” Rodriguez said. “Leslie was out for 10 weeks with a knee injury. She couldn’t pick up a ball or run and Jessica was out for four weeks with a back injury. We didn’t get everybody back until the Zapata game (Feb. 12), but they’ve stepped it up. Last year’s gone, so we can bury that. Now you get to see the game with new eyes. Every time you get on the field, it’s a new experience. That leadership role is going to take them places beyond this game.”

Ochoa and Reyna are already outpacing last season’s stats with half of the district season to play. After hitting .326 with three extra-base hits and 20 RBIs in 2018, Reyna is up to .414 this season with seven doubles, one triple, three home runs and 25 runs batted in.

“I’ve worked a lot harder than I have before,” Reyna said. “Last year was my first year on the varsity team and I was the designated hitter. I learned a lot from the older girls especially Alex(andria Alaniz). When I was doing something wrong, Alex guided me. Monica (Garcia) helped me with my hitting technique as well.

“I switched my batting stance and my mindset. I’d always stress out about batting and I wouldn’t be having fun with it. Now I just get up there and pretend like nothing’s happening other than me playing ball. It’s been better since I’ve calmed down and relaxed. I have the outcome that I want so far.”

Ochoa is the Coyotes’ top hitter with a .488 batting average, five home runs and 30 runs batted in this season. Against Mission High on Tuesday, Ochoa went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs.

“I was looking for base hits last year and this year I’m looking to be the first girl on base to get the team going,” Ochoa said. “I trained over the summer at Taylor Sports Performance in McAllen. They helped with my speed and I can’t thank them enough. My dad told me I can hit six home runs this year, so dad, if you’re reading this, I’m on five right now.”

After its early season hiccups, La Joya High (14-12) finds itself at 4-3 in District 30-6A. The district has been ruled by newcomers PSJA North (7-0 in district) and PSJA High (6-1 in district), but the Coyotes are in the midst of a fascinating race for the final two playoff spots.

On Tuesday, McAllen Rowe scored a walk-off victory over McAllen Memorial, which placed the Warriors, Mustangs and Coyotes in a three-way tie for third place at 4-3.

“We need to continue to break down our defense and improve like we have been with our communication,” Reyna said. “As of now, we’re all playing with our hearts out on the field.”

“We knew it would be a tight district with the middle teams, but we’re excited to be in the mix,” Rodriguez said. “I think some people thought ‘No way’ about us being where we are. We’re putting the ball in play and we hardly strike out. Once we fix our miscues, we’ll be fine.”

Top half of batting lineup carries Rowe in walk-off win over Memorial

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — McAllen Rowe leadoff hitter Laurynn Garcia stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Warriors had a two-run lead in the top half of the frame, but they committed two errors that allowed McAllen Memorial to tie the game at six. Memorial’s Natalie Silva reached base when Rowe’s Deandra Hernandez booted a ground ball. The Mustangs had runners on second and third at the time, as well. Both players came home to score.

But Garcia laced an offering from McAllen Memorial pitcher Kayla Dow for a base hit to end the game. The Warriors slid past the Mustangs 7-6 on Tuesday night at home.

Garcia’s hit got some hang time before dropping in front of center fielder Adallas Ramirez.

“I didn’t know if it was a hit all the way. I just hoped it was,” Garcia said. “I was thinking, ‘Hit the ball and hope it works.’ I couldn’t strike out or hit it in the infield. If it went to the outfield, we’d have a better chance to score.”

“This was our last game of the first round of districts, so we’re going to use this momentum to take us into the next round,” McAllen Rowe coach Aissa Hinojosa said. “We work on these pressure situations in practice so we can deliver. Laurynn (Garcia) did a good job of executing in that situation. We need to carry this into our next games because we’ve got some big ones coming up.”

Garcia’s game-winning hit was the cherry on top of a strong showing from McAllen Rowe’s first four hitters in the lineup.

Garcia finished 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Destiny Menchaca, the Warriors’ No. 2 hitter, went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and a run batted in.

No. 3 hitter Ziomara Jasso drove in four of McAllen Rowe’s first five runs of the game. Cleanup hitter Ashley Barreiro’s RBI groundout put the Warriors ahead, 6-4, in the fourth inning.

“Our top four hitters are strong, because we know the game, but it’s not just the top four girls,” Garcia said. “If one of us knows something, we tell the other girls so that everyone knows.”

“We had to make adjustments in the lineup to allow these situations to happen,” Hinojosa said. “Laurynn doesn’t get to do that unless the bottom of my lineup gets on base. My seventh and eighth hitters got on base, which was huge. For Laurynn to have that opportunity they had to do their jobs, and they did.”

The Warriors’ win creates a logjam at the halfway point of district play. McAllen Rowe (12-12) and McAllen Memorial (12-11) are now tied for third place at 4-3 in District 30-6A. The Warriors and Mustangs are the only ones there, because La Joya High defeated Mission High on Tuesday to place the Coyotes at 4-3 as well.

“We have to regroup from this game and get ready for tomorrow because all this loss does it make in messy in 30-6A,” McAllen Memorial coach Audra Benavidez said. “Those playoff spots are up for grabs and we have to keep working hard. We’ve got to buckle down and make plays on defense.”

McAllen Memorial senior Skaugen highlights winners at Meet of Champions

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Sean Skaugen won the 110-meter hurdles in each of the past two Meet of Champions, but the 2019 edition of the Rio Grande Valley’s largest track family reunion would hold special significance to him.

Not only would it be Skaugen’s final go-round, as a senior, but the finals were held in a familiar place for the McAllen Memorial Mustang: McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Skaugen’s 14.77 time in the 110 beat out Harlingen South’s Nitai Duran, who took silver with a 14.94 on Saturday.

“I had a lot riding on this,” Skaugen said of his win. “It’s my senior year, so I wanted to come out and win. I guess we had a little bit of an advantage since we were able to stay in our house (McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium) a little bit longer. Our coaches have a lot of pride. They were telling us, ‘This is our stadium. Let’s not anyone come in and take it from us.’ A lot of us have run our season best here. It’s great to have this race here.”

“He was warmed up and ready to go,” McAllen Memorial boys track coach Tony Niemeier said. “His prelim time was a 14.74, which was actually a PR (personal record) for him, and he was close to it again tonight. It’s hard to repeat your best time ever for the second time in a week. We talked about him running at home and I think all of our seniors were excited about that. He’s working hard. His times are dropping. We’re just trying to get him to peak at the right time.”

Skaugen, a UTRGV signee, said his fast time this week is unlike his previous years when he would tend to mark a season-best a week or two after the Meet of Champions.

“Thank goodness it’s not up to me to pace,” Skaugen said. “That’s why we have our coaches trying to see what’s best for our workouts so we don’t peak too early and stay healthy. I have to give credit to our coaches there.”

WORK IN PROGRESS

Wet weather across the Valley this week dampened a few opportunities for athletes to prepare for the Meet of Champions.

The lack of practice affected the girls’ pole vault competition, namely Edcouch-Elsa senior Bianca Cardenas.

In Friday’s Meet of Champions Prelims, Cardenas’ 9-feet, 6-inch jump managed to win the heat and qualify her for the final Saturday. Cardenas’ 11-feet, 6-inch vault was good enough to win the gold over Port Isabel’s Marlyn Cesenes (10 feet, 6 inches) who earned silver and Sharyland High’s Karla Garza (10 feet) who took home the bronze.

“It wasn’t what I was expecting,” Cardenas said. “At first, the wind was pretty difficult. But as I started jumping, I had more momentum with it. I did what I could with the conditions that were going on.”

“She didn’t get any work on the pole vault this week because of the weather,” Edcouch-Elsa girls track Juan Aguinaga said. “It’s been raining almost every day, so it kind of threw her off. She should do a lot better next week.”

Cardenas, a Texas A&M signee, will try to redeem herself next week at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

“It’s going to be about competing with my bigger pole and getting more consistent with it,” Cardenas said. “The more consistent and confident I am, I’ll hopefully PR up there. I’m aiming for a 13’6” or a 13’9.” That would be higher than 13’3,” which is my current PR.”

A-ROD’S A-BOMB

The boys shot put featured some of the top all-around athletes in the Valley. PSJA Southwest thrower Diego Treviño is already signed to compete at Oklahoma, Harlingen South’s Andrew Ott signed on at Kansas State and Sharyland Pioneer senior Parker Barrett is getting a few looks from NCAA Div. I track programs in Texas.

However, a junior from La Joya High stood above the competition Saturday. Alex Rodriguez’s throw of 58-feet, 5-inches earned the gold medal.

“I tried to not put too much pressure on myself because I’m only a junior,” Rodriguez said. “You just had to go up there confident and believe in what you do.”

Rodriguez’s 58-feet, 5-inch toss wasn’t his best of the season. On Feb. 22, Rodriguez threw a personal-best of 60 feet, 1.75 inches at the Mission Invitational.

“He’s learned to adjust to being one of the top throwers in the Valley,” La Joya High co-throwing coach Juan Guajardo said. “He finished second in the prelims on Friday just to advance, so he felt like the pressure was off today. He sees it as a chess game. ‘If I’m in the lead, they’re going to have to follow me.’”

“As far as the technicality of it, he’s always watching videos to see how he can get better,” La Joya High co-throwing coach Robert Garza said. “He studies a lot and that’s helped him a lot. He knows that we need to study just as hard as he does. That makes it better for us.”

POTPOURRI

Among the other standouts in McAllen was McAllen High’s Aniah Chaleff-Reyna. The Baylor signee won the triple jump, long jump and participated in the gold medal 400-meter relay team. Sharyland Pioneer’s Barrett won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8inches. PSJA Memorial senior Cruz Gomez won the 3200-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 14.2 seconds, a season-best.

Six-run sixth takes Weslaco High over the top in city rivalry

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — The first five innings of Friday’s Weslaco High-Weslaco East game went just about the way it usually does when Weslaco’s two public high schools get together. It was a pressure-packed, low-scoring affair.

Back in November, the Weslaco High football team rallied late in the fourth quarter to snatch victory away from Weslaco East in the Tinaco Bowl.

On the diamond, with the game tied at three entering the sixth inning, the Panthers similarly took a firmer grip thanks to a six-run frame that put the Wildcats away for good. The Panthers won 10-3 over the Wildcats Friday night on Weslaco East’s home field.

“It’s a big game for the both of us, but the odds are always stacked against us because we’re supposed to play well at all times,” Weslaco High coach Mario Rodriguez said. “Weslaco East came out tonight and made us work for what we needed to get on the field. We’re fortunate enough to have two teams in the city that are pretty good. There’s a lot of talent in Weslaco.”

Weslaco East jumped out to a 2-0 lead when a Weslaco High error led to two runs crossing the plate. The Wildcats trailed the Panthers 3-2 through three and a half innings, but Weslaco East third baseman Rionna Garcia evened the score with an RBI sacrifice fly.

The Panthers began the sixth with a base hit by first baseman Lynn Garcia, but she advanced to third base on a fielding error in the outfield. The next batter for Weslaco High (16-10, 4-1) was left fielder Jordan Diaz, who came through with an RBI triple to put the Panthers ahead for good.

Diaz is a sophomore who was on the varsity roster as a freshman in 2018. She went 3 for 4, including her run-scoring triple, while scoring twice.

“This game means everything,” Diaz said. “We’ve always been in competition. We go back-and-forth in almost every sport. It’s always great to get a win.”

The loss pushes Weslaco East two games back in the District 31-6A standings (13-13, 2-3).

“We prepared for slapping hits, for power hits, and I think we took care of them there,” Weslaco East coach Victoria Vasquez said. “We shut down their bigger hitters, defensively. (Starting pitcher) Clarissa (Martinez) did a great job for us on the mound with that, but our corners have to work on that small ball defense a little better. It’s something we’ll definitely go back and practice.”

After Weslaco High went ahead 4-3, designated player Jules Garcia reached on an error by East third baseman Rionna Garcia. The error allowed Diaz to score.

“Today was about coming in and taking what they were giving us,” Rodriguez said. “If they were going to give us a chance to play some small ball, then we were going to take it. That’s something we work on in practice and, thankfully, we get to use it in games.”

There was a scary moment for the Panthers in the seventh inning. Catcher Audrey Escamilla, a former Monitor All-Area Offensive Player of the Year, drove in their 10th run of the game on a single, but she wanted to stretch it into a double.

While Escamilla headed toward second base, she fell down at an angle, suffering a hamstring injury, and was tagged out to end the inning.

Escamilla was replaced by Jules Garcia for the remainder of the game.

“She’ll be evaluated by our trainers when we get back,” Rodriguez said. “We’ll take it one day at a time with her.”

Weslaco High will host Edinburg North at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Weslaco. The Panthers and Cougars (17-6, 4-1) are tied for second in District 31-6A.
