PSJA High draws even with PSJA North in race for first place

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

SAN JUAN — PSJA North was riding high.

The Raiders rose up four spots from No. 10 to No. 6 in last week’s RGVSports.com top 10 poll with good reason. They won all eight of their district matchups entering Tuesday. If they were able to complete a season sweep of Tri-City rival PSJA High, the Raiders would have been in the driver’s seat for a district crown.

The Bears were a game behind the Raiders, but they weren’t playing their best softball of late. PSJA High won another close contest against La Joya High last Friday, but it needed to tighten up if it wanted to knock off PSJA North from the ranks of the unbeaten.

“We had to make fewer errors tonight. No errors, to tell you the truth,” PSJA High coach Eric Madera said. “Even if we made an error, we still had play tough and keep on fighting.”

The Bears and Raiders flashed plenty of leather Tuesday, but neither played error-free softball. PSJA High, however, took better advantage of PSJA North’s mistakes in a 5-1 Bears victory at Josefina S. Ayala Softball Field.

PSJA High shortstop Vivika Villarreal had the most success off PSJA North pitcher Heaven Lozano. Villarreal, the Bears’ No. 2 hitter, went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Villarreal’s RBI came on a single that brought home Korrie Cantu from second base to score the game’s first run in the Bears’ first at-bat.

“We stayed confident and we didn’t let our past affect us,” Villarreal said. “We lost to them in the first round of districts, but we stayed positive, kept fighting and communicated well on the field.

PSJA High scored two runs in the first and added three more in the fifth inning. Bears pitcher Elaine Madera reached on an error that helped score a run. Madelyn Singleterry and Kaylah Hernandez chipped in with run-scoring hits later in the frame.

“We took this game very seriously,” Elaine Madera said. “Bear-Raider games are always hyped no matter what sport it is. We know our schools have that history. We also know when we’re both facing off with our rivals, more from us is going to come out. That’s what it comes down to in these games: who wants it more.”

PSJA North (17-11, 8-1) couldn’t solve Elaine Madera in the batter’s box. The normally-potent Raider lineup didn’t get their first hit of the game until she allowed a double with two outs in the third.

The Raiders’ lone run of the game came on an inside-the-park home run off the bat of Katelyn Luera in the fourth.

“As for us, we were ready, but it came down to who wanted it more in this case,” PSJA North coach Stephanie Lugo said. “Sometimes you have to get knocked down from the top to realize who you are and where you are. We have to respond and get better from this. This is a learning experience for all of us. We’re ready to work hard tomorrow.”

PSJA High (20-6, 8-1) are now tied with PSJA North atop District 30-6A with five district games remaining.

“This fight’s not over,” Eric Madera said. “Every team is fighting for a playoff spot and we’ve still got five games to go. They’re not just going to let us win. We have to go out and get it.”

Standing ‘Tal’: McAllen Memorial senior Talamantez takes home Player of the Year award

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — The pressure was on Tani Talamantez from the beginning.

“I had big shoes to fill in,” the McAllen Memorial point guard said. “Coach (Clarisse Arredondo) had lost some seniors and I was coming in as a starting freshman point guard. I had to take practice seriously because you don’t want to be the freshman who’s slacking. You have to push harder to prove you belong on the varsity team and be just as good as everybody else. As the seasons went along, my teammates appreciated my position on the court and I appreciated theirs.”

Talamantez’s senior season was undoubtedly her best. She led the upper Valley in scoring (20.9 points per game), while averaging 2.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.1 steals per game. Talamantez was selected as The Monitor’s 2018-19 All-Area Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

The Player of the Year honor isn’t the only recognition she received since the end of the season. The Texas Girls Coaches Association handpicked Talamantez onto its Class 6A All-State team. TGCA’s All-State team is comprised of the top 40 Class 6A players in Texas.

Talamantez was one of three Valley ballplayers to crack the All-State team’s top 40. Edinburg High’s Jenessah Santa Maria and Brownsville Hanna’s Mia Paz were the other two.

“My dad was the one who told me all this. I had no idea. I was shocked,” Talamantez said. “One day, it was this one (All-Area POY), the next day it was the other one (TGCA All-State team). I feel honored and appreciated to be recognized by people around the state.”

“That’s probably a first in McAllen Memorial history,” McAllen Memorial coach Clarisse Arredondo said of Talamantez’s presence on the TGCA 6A All-State team. “It’s a huge accomplishment because Tani’s come such a long way. She started for me as a freshman and had been my starting point guard ever since. She took our program to a higher level. The way we ended our season wasn’t indicative of our success throughout the season. We’re extremely proud to have had one of the best players in the state of Texas.”

McAllen Memorial’s season ended with a heartbreaking 62-58 first-round loss to Laredo United South, but it was nonetheless a memorable year.

District 30-6A lost La Joya Palmview, a playoff team in 2017-18, and gained PSJA North and PSJA High, two eventual playoff teams in 2018-19. The new competition did not deter the Mustangs, who ripped through district play with a perfect 14-0 record while winning games by an average of 51.5 points.

Over Talamantez’s past three seasons, the Mustangs won 37 of 38 district games. The last district loss Talamantez witnessed came against cross-town rival McAllen High, a 64-53 defeat Jan. 31, 2017.

“During my junior year, I had my girls around me,” Talamantez said. “We had some upperclassmen, but all these girls knew each other and got along great. Having that relationship off the court and then bringing it on the court helped us substantially. We knew where to be on the court. We knew we had to trust each other and we wanted to trust each other.”

“Prior to us, it was (McAllen) Nikki Rowe who won consecutive titles. Before then, it was McHi who won it for a large number of years,” Arredondo said. “When I got this job, being a McHi alum, my goal and objective was to turn Memorial basketball into the best program in McAllen and one of the best in the Valley. The success in our district has to come from the fire within us to want more than a district title. After every season ends abruptly for us, it’s, ‘Let’s get to work. Let’s get better.’ There might be some people who would like to win the district year after year and for that to be a top goal. The most important thing for us is to be the last team standing one day.”

The Mustangs’ loss to Laredo United South also marked the final time Talamantez will share a high school court with sister and sophomore guard Cori Talamantez.

“We grew up playing against each other since we were 6 or 7 years old,” Tani Talamantez said. “I told her last year, ‘Cori, if you want to be on varsity, you’re going to have to work for it. I did and now you have to do the same thing.’ She took it seriously. Playing my last two years with her was special.”

Arredondo appreciated her 5-foot-4 guard’s insistence on being herself on the court.

“She’s played a lot of club ball against bigger players for years,” Arredondo said. “I wouldn’t say she’s fearless, but she had the mindset of ‘I’m going to go out there and do my thing.’ I got the most out of her doing her thing. We’re going to have to build off of it without her next year.”

Edinburg High’s return to regional tourney nets Salinas COY award

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — J.D. Salinas applied for the Edinburg High job at a precarious time in the program’s history.

His former boss, Rachel Carmona, was let go by Edinburg CISD in the spring of 2012. It was also a time when the district was preparing for the opening of its fourth public high school: Edinburg Vela.

“I felt like I was ready for the job. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have applied,” Salinas said. “I had some great years working for Coach Carmona. We made a lot of playoff appearances over my seven years working with her. But when you take over a program where the school splits (into Edinburg Vela), I’ve been extremely blessed to have the support of my family and the administration. We struggled a little bit early on, but little by little, we developed the program to where we were this year.”

In addition to sharing a district title with Weslaco High in 2018-19, Salinas took the Bobcats back to the UIL regional tournament since Carmona roamed the sidelines. Salinas is The Monitor’s 2018-19 All-Area Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

Edinburg High had a team built to make noise led by a familiar face. Senior guard Jenessah Santa Maria was a supporting player on last season’s top-ranked team that won a playoff game before losing to Rachel Carmona’s Laredo United Longhorns in the second round.

Santa Maria’s older sister, Jayla, was The Monitor’s 2017-18 All-Area Player of the Year. Jenessah elevated her game in her final season as a Bobcat, averaging 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.9 steals per game.

Like McAllen Memorial’s Tani Talamantez and Brownsville Hanna’s Mia Paz, Santa Maria was a part of the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 6A All-State team.

“First and foremost, Jenessah is a great kid,” Salinas said. “She understood her role as an underclassman from her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. Being a part of the program for the last three years and seeing the success that we’ve had, it wouldn’t have happened without Jenessah’s leadership. We had so much laying on her shoulders since the beginning of the year.”

The Bobcats weren’t able to get off to the start that they wanted due to injuries. Two of their starters from 2017-18, wing A’nnika Saenz and forward Brianna Sanchez, were out for much of the preseason portion of their schedule.

“That comes down to coaching and I’m not going to take all the credit for it,” Salinas said. “(Assistant) Coach (George) Olvera and I work really well together, as well as the rest of my staff. The understanding of what it takes to win at the varsity level doesn’t happen by rolling the balls out on Tuesday and Friday and just playing. We watch a lot of film and adjust where we can to put our kids in the right situation even with the obstacle of kids who were hurt.”

Edinburg High earned a lucky draw on its side of the Region IV playoff bracket. The Bobcats didn’t leave the Valley for its first, second or third round games against Brownsville Hanna, PSJA North and Harlingen High.

In its third-round game against the Cardinals, Edinburg High went on a 20-0 second quarter run and held on to it in a 20-point win that sent EHS to the regional semifinal round in San Antonio. The Bobcats bowed out to San Antonio Clark in the Sweet 16.

The bond remains strong between Salinas and Carmona, who is currently an assistant under Clarisse Arredondo at McAllen Memorial.

“I was so glad to see her at the regional quarterfinal game against Harlingen,” Salinas said. “She came over and congratulated me as well. It was nice to enjoy that moment with a coach I worked with for a very long time.”

Gutierrez ends Hidalgo career as Defensive Player of the Year

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Regardless of where she was on the court, the basketball eventually found its way to Hidalgo forward Barbie Gutierrez.

This season, Gutierrez was the unanimous selection as District 32-4A’s Most Valuable Player, scoring 17.2 points per game. But much was expected of her and her Pirates teammates on the defensive end.

Gutierrez’s eye-popping defensive numbers (11.1 rebounds, 5.3 steals and 2.2 blocks) made the senior the choice as The Monitor’s 2018-19 All-Area Girls Basketball Defensive Player of the Year.

“I don’t know how I got a nose for the ball because I didn’t start playing until I was in junior high,” Gutierrez said. “That’s when I started taking it seriously and putting more time and attention to it.”

“Her fire and willingness to get better is what I enjoyed most about coaching her. She’s one of those girls who could do it all,” Hidalgo coach Saul Arjona said. “She started out as a post player, but then she turned into a five-dimensional player. I’m happy for her. Her attitude and leadership will be missed here. It’s going to be hard to replace.”

Gutierrez is the second consecutive 32-4A unanimous MVP coached by Arjona. One of Arjona’s daughters, Ashley, was the Most Valuable Player during the 2017-18 season.

“I don’t think of them like that. I just saw that both of these girls worked hard,” Arjona said. “I can’t keep Barbie out of the gym. I’ll tell them, ‘OK, it’s time to get out. We have to go,’ but they’re gym rats. They want to get better because they love the game. Barbie’s already a good volleyball player, and she also plays softball, but she always comes back to the gym. Barbie’s something else.”

With Ashley Arjona last season, the Pirates won 31 games with 13 of them coming in district play. This year’s club reached territory that last year’s team was not able to achieve.

Despite the loss of Arjona and an injury to key sharpshooter Elisa De La Peña, Hidalgo won 35 games and rolled through its district with an undefeated 14-0 record.

“We knew we still had a good team with a lot of us returning, but we didn’t know if we could fill her (Arjona’s) shoes,” Gutierrez said. “We looked up to Ashley, but we knew what we had to do to get better.”

The Pirates, who were the last team standing in the third round of the playoffs last season, had their 2018-19 campaign end in an all too familiar fashion. Hidalgo dropped its second-round game to Crystal City, 56-53.

Crystal City was the same team that ended the Pirates’ postseason in 2017.

“They (Crystal City) also beat us in the second round during my freshman year,” Gutierrez said. “But we were a totally different team back then. We were all still underclassmen, so we weren’t as experienced as we needed to be. I honestly believe that we could have beat them. I guess we felt so much pressure, myself included. And it’s never felt like that at all this season. We could have had them.”

Losing in the playoffs won’t be Gutierrez’s lasting memory as a Pirate.

“I enjoyed watching every single one of my teammates play whether I was in the game or on the bench,” Gutierrez said. “They’ve done so many things differently than the way they did them last year. I’m impressed and inspired by them. I know how hard they worked.”

Newcomer of the Year Hernandez key in revival at PSJA High

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — The transition from middle school basketball to varsity basketball was night and day for PSJA High forward Kaylah Hernandez.

A freshman like Hernandez wasn’t looking to draw attention to herself or make waves with her older and more experienced teammates.

“When I began (the year), I would sit and watch them (older teammates) play. I wasn’t a starter,” Hernandez said. “I’d be like, ‘OK, if they put me in, I’m going to be ready. I’m going to focus and take everything slow.’ Well, it worked.”

In addition to capturing District 30-6A’s Newcomer of the Year honors, Hernandez was named as The Monitor’s 2018-19 All-Area Girls Basketball Newcomer of the Year. Hernandez averaged 10.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for the Bears.

This season, Hernandez joined the team alongside senior mainstays Ashley Pecina (13.1 points) and Dee Galvan (7.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists).

“It took some time because I stayed with my little freshmen group at first,” Hernandez said. “Then we started getting closer and they helped me with a lot of what I needed to do. I was really blessed to have them as seniors. They’re going to help me this summer to become bigger and better next year.”

“When we put her in a game early on this season, the first thing I noticed about Kaylah is that she’s not afraid,” PSJA High coach Nelly Treviño said. “She’s doesn’t worry. She’s ready to go. When you have a kid like that, who is also super athletic and soaks up everything that you’re teaching, you know good things are going to happen for her. She didn’t start the first eight games, but when we able to work her in (the starting lineup), she hit it off with Dee (Galvan) and (Ashley) Pecina. They trusted her from the start and just ran with it. She’s the kind of kid a coach wants to have.”

The PSJA High program has gone through several facelifts over the past handful of seasons. The Bears had not made the playoffs since the 2015-16 season, when they finished in third place as a part of District 32-5A.

During that season, the Bears were coached by Stephanie Cantu, but she moved on to take the job at McAllen High, her alma mater. The loss of their head coach, coupled with move up to Class 6A, was a bad mix for PSJA High, which won a combined seven district games over the next two seasons.

In her second season on the job, Treviño helped the team make huge strides in 2018-19. The Bears won 27 games and qualified for their first postseason since Cantu’s final year as the No. 3 seed from District 30-6A.

“During that first year, it was hard because I remember when I was a player and how hard it was when you weren’t winning,” Treviño said. “Even though the record didn’t show it, I knew that we were heading in the right direction.”

Hernandez will be the top returning scorer from this season’s playoff team.

“It (playing in the playoffs) was really scary. I couldn’t believe it at first, but we had our minds set on making the playoffs,” Hernandez said. “I’ve been watching (LeBron) Bronny James Jr. highlights and other prodigies to see what they do. They inspire me to change what I can do and how I can do things better and stronger.”
