Runners punch tickets to area meet in 31-6A competition

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — The Weslaco High girls 800-meter relay team had another eye-catching performance Saturday night.

After winning the race at the 2019 Meet of Champions two weeks ago, the Panthers’ combination of Jenna Martinez, Lisamarie Sanchez, Emma Arndt and Alexa Davila were almost a full three seconds faster than second-place Edinburg Economedes. Weslaco High’s official time was 1 minute, 45.33 seconds; Economedes checked in at 1:48.32.

“The girls were on today,” Weslaco High girls coach Pablo Almaguer said. “It’s our district meet so we’re trying to run our fastest times to get ready for the regional meet and, hopefully ,the state meet. It was really windy out there, but we told the girls, ‘Don’t let the wind affect you. Run your race.’ We have a junior, a sophomore, a senior and an anchor freshman. For them to break a record we set back in 2015, that was pretty special.”

“I think we do have an advantage because this (Bobby Lackey Stadium) is our home,” Lisamarie Sanchez said. “Our handoffs had been a little shaky lately, but we do practice a lot as a team. We encourage each other and push each other. After every handoff, we’re always encouraging our teammates to keep going.”

Sanchez is the senior leg of the Panthers’ fearsome quartet.

“I’m really honored to be teammates with them,” Sanchez said. “You get to see your teammates, who are young, as the oldest. It’s sad that I’ll have to leave them eventually, but I know they’re in good hands with coach A(lmaguer). I can’t wait until I come back and see the freshmen become seniors, so I can see how much they’ve grown.”

MORE HURDLES TO CLEAR

Edinburg North senior hurdler Roel De Leon posted a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday, but he knows he is a work in progress.

“I’ve got to work on how I start,” De Leon said. “I’ve got to be better out of the blocks. It’s a matter of mechanics and speed. I’ve got to work on my steps because I start running up to the hurdle. Once I feel a little close, I usually go a little bit higher over the first hurdle. I used to be the first one out of the blocks, but it’s about getting in rhythm. One of my strengths is in between hurdles where I speed up. I gain speed as I go. I can’t focus on anyone else running beside me. I’ve just got to run my race.”

De Leon’s 15.40 seconds was enough to edge Edinburg Vela’s Victor Segovia (15.68) for first place.

“I still see room for improvement,” Edinburg North hurdles coach Jake Hrbacek said. “He started off kind of slow, but luckily, he picked it up. He’s done that all year. I keep telling him that if we get the first part of the race down, then he could be running in the mid-14’s. He has the body frame and the ability for it. He’s just got to put together a full race.”

CLEAN SWEEP

Edinburg Vela junior Jeremy Nino had one of the best two-day stretches of any athlete at this week’s district meet in Weslaco.

Nino squared off with a field in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter races, which included Weslaco High senior Tony Sanchez.

Nino and Sanchez were neck-and-neck for the 2-mile race on Thursday. Ultimately, Nino (9:34.31) was 0.43 seconds faster than Sanchez (9:34.74).

On Saturday, Nino took home gold in the 800 (1:57.41) and mile races (4:26.19). All three of Nino’s first-place finishes were personal bests.

“Tony’s a good competitor and everyone here is a good competitor,” Nino said. “I feel like I have to prove to people what I can do because the rest of the runners have already proved themselves. I know how to run the 800 and 16(00), but I haven’t run the 32(00) all year. Thursday was my first one. The intensity changes with the crowd and everyone cheering for you.”

“He’s a very resilient young man,” Edinburg Vela boys coach Hernan Figueroa said. “When it came down to the kick, I knew both kids would be very strong finishers. They’ve gone back and forth before. Jeremy’s won some and Tony’s won some. It was a great battle. They’re both great kids.”

Nino will return to Weslaco for the area meet in two weeks.

Longoria leads Edinburg Vela to shutout of Weslaco High

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG — Edinburg Vela lost its first district game of the season a week ago against city rival Edinburg North.

It was a high-scoring, close defeat that knocked the SaberCats down from the No. 1 ranking in the latest RGVSports.com top 10 poll out this week.

“I don’t think the loss affected us,” Edinburg Vela first baseman/designated player Deandra Longoria said. “It brought us closer together and made us stronger as a team.”

Edinburg Vela, which entered Friday as the No. 2 team in the Valley, ran past Edinburg Economedes on Tuesday and blanked Weslaco High 7-0 on Friday night. The SaberCats (24-4, 8-1) maintained the top spot in District 31-6A, while the Panthers dropped to third place behind Edinburg North.

“We’ve been focused since Wednesday,” Edinburg Vela coach Jon Maples said. “As soon as the Econ(omedes) game was over, we were locked in getting ready for Weslaco (High). The girls knew that we needed to improve our defense. Defense is what will control everything.”

The defense behind Edinburg Vela starter Brianna Salinas was outstanding. Among the SaberCats’ sparkling plays came when Weslaco High’s Jordan Diaz bounced into a 6-4-3 double play after Salinas allowed her first hit of the game in the fourth inning.

Edinburg Vela catcher Darissa Buenrostro pulled off another when she picked off Helen Gonzalez at first base during the sixth inning.

Longoria had a big night at the plate. With Vela already up 1-0 in the second, Longoria brought another run home with a sacrifice fly. During the fifth inning, Longoria stepped in to the batter’s box with the bases loaded and doubled in two more runs to make it 4-0.

She later scored the SaberCats’ fifth run on a wild pitch later in the frame.

“I based off what I was going to do tonight from the last game we played them,” Longoria said. “I looked over videos of me batting and fixed a few things. Luckily, I got a hold of some pitches tonight.”

Weslaco High committed two errors in the middle of Vela’s five-run fifth inning.

“It has to do with the youth that we have on our team,” Weslaco High coach Mario Rodriguez said. “We have two freshmen, five sophomores and three seniors starting. Our youth got us today. They (Edinburg Vela) are the most experienced team in our district. We couldn’t keep up with what they were doing to us.”

Rodriguez was once again without one of his workhorses in catcher Audrey Escamilla. Escamilla, a senior, injured a hamstring rounding first base during a game against Weslaco East on March 22. She hasn’t returned to the field since.

“She’s still in rehab, getting treatment,” Rodriguez said. “She hasn’t practiced or played. We don’t know when she’s expected to come back. We’re looking at it day-to-day. This has also given other girls the opportunity to step up and play. They’ve been doing a good job. Every time we had something going, they closed the door on us.”

Fresh Air: Catcher De La Torre seamlessly adjusting to Mercedes softball

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

MERCEDES — Mercedes coach Kristy Leal believes a good catcher is fearless and has a strong command of the game.

Leal said she found these qualities in freshman Makayla De La Torre when she was an eighth grader.

“Obviously, the game’s a little bit slower at the middle school level. I knew she was a talented player, but naturally, varsity softball is a different animal,” Leal said. “She came in here on the first day and proved that she belonged with our upperclassmen. She’s just going to play the game. She progressed so much from the beginning of the year to now that you can’t even tell she’s a freshman anymore.”

One of De La Torre’s biggest challenges has been balancing a large pitching staff. The Tigers have had six different hurlers take the circle so far this season.

“It’s really different,” De La Torre said. “The speed of the pitchers, by itself, was a lot. You have to get used to their different styles and different variety of pitches that they might throw. I got used to it, adapting to their pitching styles.”

Kassidie Rodriguez was where De La Torre is in 2019. Rodriguez was a freshman starting pitcher last year at Mercedes.

“She came in like I did: already able to play at the varsity level, but still a little scared to play,” Rodriguez said. “Not only the pitchers, but the whole team helped her out of her shell and gave her the confidence that she needs. These past few weeks, she’s been a lot more vocal. She does a great job behind the plate.”

De La Torre and Rodriguez have experience as teammates, but they haven’t been teammates since they were both in elementary school. They were teammates on the Mercedes Rage, a 10-and-under team.

“We were mostly girls who had barely started to play softball,” De La Torre said. “That was one of Kass’ (Kassidie) first years as a pitcher, but she quickly became one of our best pitchers.”

This season, Rodriguez is 4-3 with a 1.35 earned run average and 59 strikeouts in 46.2 innings of work. The Tigers’ team ERA is 1.09.

“We already grew up together, so it wasn’t hard to bond with her, but playing together was something we hadn’t done recently,” Rodriguez said. “Beginning last fall, we had to rebuild that connection. It’s just grown more and more throughout the season.”

De La Torre has also held her own in the batter’s box. She is second on the team in batting average (.410), hits (25) and runs batted in (13).

De La Torre went 1 for 3 with two runs batted in and a run scored in Mercedes’ 9-2 win over Brownsville Porter on Wednesday.

“She’s batting second in our lineup and she’s been at that spot,” Leal said. “I put her in that position because I know she’s going to swing the bat. She’s a force when she goes up there. You can see it in her eyes. That’s why I put my trust in her.”

“I had to put in a lot of work,” De La Torre said. “I’ve been to summer workouts, went into the weight room and put in some summer conditioning. It took a lot of dedication to get here. This is where I wanted to be. It’s always been my dream to be a varsity starter as a freshman. My grandpa told me that he really wanted to see me play on varsity, so I promised him that I would. He’s been to almost every single game this year.”

Mercedes (17-8-1, 8-1) is in the midst of its most important stretch of the season. After defeating the Cowboys, the Tigers head out on the road to meet Brownsville Veterans tonight and will then host archrival Edcouch-Elsa next Tuesday.

The first-place Chargers (20-6-1, 9-0) are one game ahead of the Tigers in the District 32-5A standings while the third-place Yellow Jackets (18-8, 7-2) are just one game behind Mercedes.

“We don’t want to overlook anyone in our district. It seems like everyone is out to get everybody right now,” Leal said. “We’re going to approach every game exactly the same. Of course, we want to get a win against (Brownsville) Vets and keep our lead over Edcouch(-Elsa). But we can’t overlook anybody after those games, either.”

Protecting Their House: Sanchez, Weslaco High eyeing big weekend at district meet

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — When distance runner Juan Manzano graduated, it was a big loss for Weslaco High and teammate Tony Sanchez.

Manzano is now a sophomore runner at UTRGV.

“They (Juan and Tony) both ran cross country when Juan was a junior and Tony was a freshman,” Weslaco High boys track coach Gustavo Cabrera said. “Juan was the one who would always push him and give him advice. He was almost like another coach to him.”

“Juan (Manzano) graduated after my sophomore year,” Sanchez said. “Coming into my junior year, I was by myself. My team was there, but they weren’t on the level that Manzano was. He was one of the top runners in the Valley. He was my motivation. When he left, I wanted to step up and be that person for the rest of the team.”

Sanchez competes primarily in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter races for the Panthers. After going through his first two seasons without an individual win in any race, Sanchez broke through as a junior to win the mile race at the 2018 Meet of Champions and the two-mile race at the 2018 Harlingen Relays.

“Juan didn’t really say anything, but it felt like a passing of the baton,” Sanchez said. “I was a captain as a sophomore, but when he left, we needed to be better and I needed to be better.”

Sanchez also qualified for last year’s 800-meter run at the UIL Region IV meet in San Antonio.

“It’s like you’re one of the best in the Valley and all of sudden you’re going up against more competition,” Sanchez said. “It was my first time there and I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know how fast they would take off until they took off. That experience has really helped me this year because now I take off faster in my races so I can keep up with the pace in San Antonio. Hopefully, that’ll help me make it to state.”

“He’s a four-year letterman. When he was a freshman, he was a little kid with a bunch of seniors. But we noticed something really special with Tony early on,” Cabrera said. “His work ethic is second-to-none and his times have dropped drastically these last two years. He’s matured a lot. Along with that, his work ethic has improved.”

His senior season is off to a roaring start. Sanchez has won the 800-meter race at four different meets, the 1,600-meter race at three meets and the 3,200-meter race twice. He pulled off the victorious trifecta at the Weslaco ISD Jimmy Platt Invitational on March 9.

“Usually, the distance runners only run in the 16(00) and 32(00) but not the 800,” Sanchez said. “Most of those distance runners have a lot more recovery time, but it’s more of a challenge for me. Even on a meet day, there isn’t a lot of time for me to recover. We did a tune-up meet last week and I only had five minutes to rest after I ran the 2-mile. I was surprised to win the 800 because I didn’t think I had that in me. This year, I’ve had to train harder than I ever have before. Being able to prepare for three events is way more challenging than preparing for two.”

If the right opportunity presents itself, Sanchez would like to run at the college level in Texas. UTRGV, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, University of the Incarnate Word, Louisiana-Monroe and Texas A&M-Kingsville have reached out to him, so far.

“I’d prefer to stay in Texas if I can,” Sanchez said. “Having the opportunity to go anywhere is nice for any runner. It’s a dream for a lot of us. When I hear about a school, I want to see what their engineering program is like because I want to get an engineering degree. I’m set to graduate with an associate degree before college and I want to see where my credits can transfer.”

Sanchez will compete in all three races at the District 31-6A meet held inside the familiar confines of Bobby Lackey Stadium today and Saturday in Weslaco.

The 2-mile race will take place today, while the 800 and 1,600-meter races will be Saturday.

“Both the boys and girls have a good chance of winning district championships this week. We just have to show up tomorrow (Thursday) and Saturday,” Sanchez said. “Honestly, the races being on different days is great for me because I’ll get more rest. In the 2-mile, I just aim to win it and not aim for a time. Since I’ll have a whole day of rest before Saturday, I think I can go all out for the 2-mile and still have fresh legs for the 800 and the mile. Hopefully, I can win all three, as well.”

“We’re hosting the district (31-6A) meet and also the (31/32-6A) area meet,” Cabrera said. “We’ve reminded the kids that we’re supposed to protect our house. We’re at home. What else do we need? We don’t have to drive anywhere else. We run here every day. Our kids should know this track like the back of their hand. It’s going to be a good meet.”
