They’re In: Lopez’s big night helps Edinburg High squeeze Weslaco East out of playoff picture

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — Five teams in the newly-configured District 31-6A were playoff teams in 2018. Edinburg Vela, Edinburg High and Edinburg North qualified for the postseason from 31-6A while Weslaco High and Weslaco East did so from District 32-6A.

With five playoff-caliber teams and four spots available in the new 31-6A, a race to the finish line for two of those five clubs felt like an inevitability. On Monday night, a winner was declared.

Edinburg High brought out their big bats late, scoring 12 runs in the last four innings, to down Weslaco East 14-5 in a winner-take-all matchup for the last playoff spot in District 31-6A. The Bobcats will advance to take San Benito in the bi-district round later this week.

“We just let everything hang out tonight,” Edinburg High coach Ramon Arciba said. “The girls came out here ready to play. They didn’t want to end their season tonight. Our program has been used to making the playoffs for so many years that we’ve lost track, even before I became the coach. And I didn’t want the season to end for our seniors tonight, either. They were focused.”

The Bobcats were off and running in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Secilia Lopez singled, stole a base and later scored on an RBI double from Valerie De Leon. Kristee Salas brought De Leon home on a sacrifice fly to put Edinburg High (8-15, 6-7) ahead 2-0.

The one-two punch of Lopez and De Leon was unstoppable all night for EHS. De Leon later capped her night with a two-run, inside-the-park home run during the seventh inning.

Lopez went 5 for 5 at the plate, scoring three times and driving in two runs with a single during the seventh.

“I pulled Seci(lia) aside during our batting practice and I looked her in the eyes and told her that I needed her to play her best game of the season,” Arciba said. “I’ve known her for years, so I know she’s capable of it. Lo and behold, she gave us her best game tonight. You can’t ask for anything better than 5 for 5.”

“My best games have been me going 3 for 4, but never 5 for 5,” Lopez added. “To do that in the biggest game of the season felt great. I pulled through for my team when I needed to.”

Lopez also hurled 5 1/3 innings in the circle, allowing five runs on nine hits. She walked four and struck out two Wildcats (16-18, 5-8).

“She (Lopez) hit everything that we threw at her,” Weslaco East coach Victoria Vasquez said. “We threw it outside and she hit it up the middle. We threw it inside and she hit it up the middle. We threw a changeup and she got a hold of it. She was on fire tonight.”

The Bobcats will tangle with the Greyhounds (22-10) in a one-game playoff at 7 p.m. Friday on the Edinburg High campus.

“San Benito has solid pitching with two solid pitchers,” Arciba said. “We have to hit the ball. Hopefully, we can adjust to the pitchers and where they throw to us. We have to play pretty much a perfect game defensively in order to stay in the game.”

Edinburg High, Weslaco East gearing up for play-in game

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

Edinburg High and Weslaco East took very different paths to a play-in game set for Monday night.

The Bobcats were tabbed as a preseason contender to win the new-look District 31-6A, though they had a much different look to them.

Amber Reyes, The Monitor’s 2017 All-Area Player of the Year, was off to Texas A&M-Kingsville. Power hitter and Lehigh University commit Katy Truitt transferred as did Shayla Garcia, who was a freshman catcher in 2018. Truitt is at Corpus Christi Flour Bluff. The Hornets won their first district title in school history on Thursday night. Garcia is a sophomore on a San Antonio Warren team that won District 28-6A.

To make matters tougher, Edinburg High lost ace pitcher Erika Cortez, The Monitor’s 2018 All-Area Player of the Year, to Rio Hondo just games into this season.

Somehow, EHS (7-15, 5-7) is getting ready for its fourth-place game against Weslaco East that didn’t seem possible.

“It’s been a tough season for us. We didn’t expect to be in this situation,” Edinburg High coach Ramon Arciba said. “We had high hopes, but now we’re in a position where we can control our own destiny. The girls have continued to fight through adversity. They show up to practice, day in and day out. As soon as these things happened, we couldn’t dwell on them. They were very big parts of our team, but we’ve had some youth step up where we’ve needed them throughout the season.”

Weslaco East (16-17, 5-7) has dealt with a rash of injuries and position changes.

“We’ve had three season-ending injuries on our roster,” Weslaco East coach Victoria Vasquez said. “We’ve had to make adjustments early in the season, midseason and now at the end of the season. What we’re asking the girls to do is trust us. We need them to trust that we’re putting them in the best position to help us win. They’ve done a great job so far. We had a great game against Edinburg North (a 2-1 ENHS win in 12 innings April 9). Hopefully, it’ll work for us again.”

It’s difficult to gauge what to expect from the Bobcats and Wildcats. EHS and WEHS split the season series with each team defeating the other by 10 runs in both meetings.

Weslaco East will host the winner-take-all game at 7 p.m. Monday in Weslaco.

“We watch a lot of film and have a lot of scouting reports on them,” Vasquez said. “We need to eliminate a lot of errors on our side. We give up a lot of unearned runs. We need to take care of our pitcher in the circle.”

“We’re just going to let it all hang out on Monday,” Arciba said. “We’re going to throw everything at them. The mentality we have is that we have nothing to lose. I have no doubt that our girls will rise to the occasion.”

Donna High defies odds, clinches first-ever playoff berth

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

Donna High’s path to the postseason was a daunting one.

Its three remaining games of the regular season were at Brownsville Lopez, the No. 4 seed in District 32-5A at game time, at Mercedes, the No. 2 seed on Tuesday, and a pesky Valley View team Thursday primed for the role as potential spoiler.

While the Brownsville Lopez game was going to decide Donna’s playoff fate this week, the start time was delayed an hour because umpires weren’t scheduled for the game.

“We needed to go into that game with a tough mindset,” Donna High coach Adrian Lopez said. “They (Brownsville Lopez) are tough to beat at home. It’s a hostile environment. I was kind of worried in the beginning because the umpires didn’t show up on time. I was worried that our kids were going to come out a little flat, but the more I looked at them, the more I knew they were ready to go. We just had to play smart softball. We had to hit the ball and limit our mistakes. We only made one error in that ballgame.”

Donna High downed Brownsville Lopez 7-3, which moved it into a tie for fourth place with the Lobos. Because both teams lost on Tuesday, Donna had to win its finale and for Mercedes to beat Brownsville Lopez in order to qualify for the postseason.

The Tigers did their part by defeating the Lobos, but Donna went to extra innings against Valley View. The game was tied going into the bottom of the ninth. Donna High got a leadoff triple from Anaisa Orozco. After Orozco, Yzella Perez stepped up and drilled a sharp liner to shortstop that was bobbled. That was all Orozco needed to score the winning run and give Donna a heart-pounding 6-5 victory.

The win clinched Donna its first playoff appearance in program history. The softball program began at Donna in 2002.

“They (Valley View) gave us all we could handle,” said Lopez, who is in his seventh season leading the program. “In the end, we came through and won the game. The kids worked hard and they earned the opportunity to get in.”

Donna (15-14, 7-7) will take on District 31-5A champion PSJA Memorial (23-6-1, 14-0) in a one-game playoff at 7 p.m. Thursday at PSJA Memorial.

Weslaco High secures No. 2 seed behind Escamilla’s 3 RBIs

BY NATE KOTISSO | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG — After Weslaco High cleanup hitter Audrey Escamilla drove in another run against archrival Weslaco East on March 22, the senior tried to stretch her single into a double.

Escamilla made a beeline toward second, but she didn’t make it. She injured a hamstring in between the bags and was tagged out to end the seventh inning.

“I thought my senior year was over,” Escamilla said. “Everybody was asking me if I felt tight before (it happened) or if anything was hurting. All I was thinking at that time was that I’m going to make it to second base. It just happened out of nowhere. I’ve done a lot of rehab since then. Twice a day, every single day.”

Weslaco High coach Mario Rodriguez said Escamilla re-entered the starting lineup when it hosted Weslaco East in a 9-2 win Tuesday. The Panthers defeated Edinburg North by an identical 9-2 score Thursday.

Escamilla’s presence in the lineup was beneficial for Weslaco High on Thursday. She went 3 for 4 with three runs batted in while scoring a run.

“She’s slowly getting herself back into her old routine,” Rodriguez said. “The time she was hurt gave the other girls the opportunity to step up and they have. That’s why we find ourselves in the situation that we’re in. Now with Audrey back, it just helps us with another person with great leadership qualities.”

“I was a little nervous at first, but the more I go up there, the more comfortable I become at the plate,” Escamilla said. “A lot of people are saying that me being back is making a difference, but honestly, it’s all the girls. They were winning when I wasn’t there. They were doing everything they needed to do since Day 1, whether I’m there or not. I’m not doing everything. That’s something that I think needs to be recognized a lot more.”

Weslaco High (22-11) leadoff hitter Lily Torres started the first inning with a base hit and scored on an RBI groundout from Escamilla. Torres would also drive in a run in the fourth inning.

Jordan Diaz, the Panthers’ No. 5 hitter, blew Thursday’s game open when she golfed a two-run home run over the left field fence off Edinburg North (22-8) starting pitcher Natalie Rodriguez.

“I was looking for a middle-to-outside pitch, but I knew she was throwing inside so I had to back up a little bit,” Diaz said. “I was trying to find a pitch to hit and move runners over. When I hit it, I knew it was gone.”

“We were going to take whatever she was going to give us,” coach Rodriguez said. “We weren’t going to be overthinking things. If we liked a pitch, we were going to go after it. Luckily, we were able to put some hits together and take advantage of some of the errors that they made.”

Thursday’s win notches Weslaco High a season sweep of Edinburg North and the No. 2 seed in the first round of the playoffs next week. ENHS led off the home half of the first inning with Jessica Diaz’s first career home run, but the team didn’t get its next hit until the fourth inning.

The Cougars will assume the No. 3 seed representing District 31-6A.

“We weren’t in it from the beginning,” Edinburg North coach Richard Tressler said. “You can’t, a) not have any offense, and, b) make some of the mistakes that we made. Other than the home run, how many balls did they hit hard? One other hit to center. The rest (of the hits) were bloops. You can’t do that. Not at this point in the year.”

Edinburg North will face Harlingen South in the bi-district round while Weslaco High will contend with Los Fresnos from District 32-6A.
