Bobcats beaten by Geronimo Navarro

By MARK MOLINA, Staff Writer

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Rio Hondo Bobcats knew what to expect from the Geronimo Navarro Slot-T, but even then, they still had no answers.

The Panthers got whatever they wanted on the ground during the first half and pounded the Bobcats into submission as they rolled to a 42-13 Class 4A Division II area-round win Friday night at Corpus Christi’s Buc Stadium.

The Panthers posted 295 yards on the ground in the first half and scored four touchdowns on four possessions (three on the ground), led by Johnny Alegria, who found the end zone three times during the first two quarters.

“It was a rough first half, going down 28-0,” Rio Hondo coach Rocky James said. “We had some really good plays defensively, but we couldn’t get off the field. Navarro had third-and-long and fourth-and-long, and was getting the first downs. There is really nothing we can do about those.”

The Panthers move on to the third round, and the Bobcats will end their season in the area round for the third straight year. Narro also eliminated Rio Hondo in Round 2 with a 71-44 rout in 2017.

Alegria opened the game by scoring on a 24-yard run to cap off a seven-play, 75-yard drive that put Navarro up 7-0 with 9:42 to play in the quarter.

After Euler De Leon made it 14-0 late in the first quarter on a 9-yard rushing score, Alegria continued to dominate on the next drive with a 77-yard touchdown on a third-and-8 to make it 21-0 early in the second quarter.

Rio Hondo mounted its best drive of the half, covering 45 yards in 10 plays, but a fourth-down rush by quarterback Matthew Trevino was stuffed at the Panthers’ 7.

Navarro tacked on another score seven plays later with on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Nick Billings to Alegria to make it 28-0 with seconds to play during the first half.

Navarro racked up 341 yards in the half, all of it on the ground, save for the long touchdown pass.

The Bobcats scored on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Trevino by Tomas Arredondo to make it 28-6 after a missed point-after attempt.

Rio Hondo forced a turnover on downs on the ensuing possession and was on the move again, but Trevino was intercepted by Navarro defensive back Sam Muniga on the goal line.

“I had to work on some schemes because Navarro blitzed the whole game,” Trevino said. “In the second half, we made that adjustment and we at least put up some points. On that score, I was 100 percent confident in my team and I knew we would go out there and make a play. On that interception, I saw an opening and overthrew it a bit. Right there, it really turned for me.”

That pick set up 1-yard Jean Sims TD run 16 plays later to extend the lead to 35-6.

“We came out and played a way better second half,” James said. “We got our stops defensively and (turned over Navarro on downs twice). We threw a pick down there and we were driving, down 28-13. That was our one shot to turn the tide. We could’ve made it 28-21 — you never know what could’ve happened.”

Rio Hondo received a 24-yard touchdown run from Ismael Rodriguez, but Navarro answered with a score and used the ground game to kill the clock.

Trevino threw for 143 yards and one score to lead the Bobcats. Ethan Jeradiah rushed for 34 yards and left the game with an injury late in the fourth.

Navarro rushed for 491 yards and posted 537 in total.

Tarpons make early push, lose to Sinton

By MARK MOLINA | Staff Writer

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Port Isabel Tarpons came out against the Sinton Pirates and played aggressively on both sides of the ball, leading to a slim halftime lead.

Unfortunately for the Tarpons, the second half was not so kind.

The Tarpons netted just one defensive stop and one offensive score during the second half, and the Pirates posted 37 points in the final two quarters as they rolled to a 50-30 Class 4A Division II bi-district victory Friday night at Corpus Christi’s Buc Stadium.

Sinton scored on four of its six second-half possessions, outscoring the Tarpons — who held a three-point lead at halftime — 37-13.

“We came out and did what we had to do and had the lead at halftime,” Port Isabel coach Jason Strunk said. “We came out in the second half and gave up 37 points. That’s unacceptable. It can’t happen. I’m going to start fixing that on Monday. It’s two years in a row now that we let one slip away in the second half of the playoffs. It’s my mission to fix it, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

The Pirates trailed 17-13 at the half but came out of the break firing, taking the opening possession 70 yards in nine plays for a 9-yard touchdown run by Rene Galvan, who cleaned up a Rylan Galvan fumble in the backfield in the process, to make it 21-17 after a two-point conversion.

After Rylan Galvan scored on 4-yard run on the next drive to make it 28-17, Jake Pinkerton returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a Tarpons score to make it a four-point game.

Rylan Galvan scored two more scores on runs of 22 and five yards on the next two possessions to make it 43-24 early in the fourth.

Joey Kreighbaum hit Brayan Medina for an 11-yard pass for a score to make it 43-30, but Rene Galvan added a 15-yard score late to put the game on ice.

After Sinton scored on a 16-yard Rylan Galvan touchdown run on its opening possession, Port Isabel’s Mac Strunk got in the end zone on a 6-yard run two plays later to tie the game at 7 with 6:47 to play in the first.

Mac Strunk was given carries in the Wildcat formation and various other looks, leading to his best game of a season in which he dealt with lower-body injuries.

“It was my best game,” Mac Strunk said. “I wanted to leave it all out there, and I don’t care what happens, I’m going to get carted off. We moved the ball pretty good on (Sinton), but (in the) second half they figured out the plays and just hit us in the mouth.”

Galvan put Sinton ahead with his second score of the first half to make it 13-7 after a missed extra point seconds into the second quarter.

Strunk once again helped provide a quick answer as he hit a wide-open Medina for a 28-yard halfback pass for a touchdown to make it 14-13 with 10:15 to play in the first half.

The Tarpons led 17-13 at the break following Angel Fernandez’s 21-yard field goal with 12 seconds to play before the break.

Medina received a bulk of the carries and wrapped up another 1,000-yard season.

“We came out strong and had the best week of practice all year,” Medina said. “We were confident we were going to win, and we came out in the second half and didn’t come out as strong. They came out stronger than we did in the second half. We fought for it, and I couldn’t be prouder of my teammates.”

It was a rough, injury-filled season, but Jason Strunk was pleased with the performance Friday night.

“The kids know what we have dealt with every week this year,” he said. “Our freshmen team was undefeated this year, so we know we’re laying the groundwork. These kids battled and played tough. The people that were with us all year long and in our corner — we’re grateful. It isn’t what we wanted, but the building blocks are there and we’re going to continue to build. These kids battled all year long through injuries, and it’s incredible to have a lead at halftime.”

Vikings push Miller to brink in bi-district loss

By MARK MOLINA, Staff Writer

CORPUS CHRISTI — Coming in as a heavy underdog, the Pace Vikings found themselves down just seven points with a first-and-goal at the Corpus Christi Miller 4 with less than one minute to play.

After netting just 1 yard in three running plays, Pace quarterback Jose Banda rolled out to his right on fourth down and threw a pass to the corner of the end zone out of the reach of his receiver’s hands.

Pace turned the ball over on downs, and Miller hung on for a 28-21 Class 5A Division I bi-district win Thursday night at Buc Stadium in Corpus Christi.

The Vikings end the season 6-5, and Miller will head to the area round a perfect 11-0.

“I think in the end, we just got too much in a hurry,” Pace coach Danny Pardo said. “We didn’t execute on the last play, but it is what it is. My kids played really well for being young, but not inexperienced now. Nobody gave us a chance, and Miller was averaging 60 points a game. I said, ‘Well, they haven’t played a bunch of little Mexicans.’ So I said, ‘Just go play,’ and they believe in what we do.”

The game was tied at 21 entering the fourth quarter, until Miller running back Marcell Davis broke a 72-yard run to put the Bucs up 28-21 with 9:42 to play.

After scoring 21 points during the first three quarters thanks to long, methodical drives and a strong running game, Pace was scoreless across the final 16-plus minutes of gameplay.

“We just didn’t execute with the game on the line,” Banda said. “When everything counted, we couldn’t execute. Everybody said we didn’t have a chance, but everybody came out trying their hardest and trying to take the win today. We couldn’t and I take part in it. It was my fault.”

Banda had a solid game, recording 144 yards rushing and 159 yards through the air with one passing score, and senior running back Dylan Barron rushed for 61 yards and two scores to lead the Vikings.

Pace opened the game with a 13-play, 62-yard drive that spanned nearly seven minutes and culminated in a 2-yard rushing score by Dylan Barron to make it 7-0 midway through the first.

After Miller turned the ball over on downs at its own 35, Banda hit receiver Jaylun Garcia — who was wide open after a Miller defender slipped — for a 31-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 with 2:38 left in the first.

The Vikings forced two first-half Miller turnovers (three total) and two turnovers on downs. The Bucs turned the ball over once during the regular season.

“It’s not what Pace did, it’s what we didn’t do,” Miller coach Justen Evans said. “They didn’t stop us all night. We just did stupid stuff like put the ball on the ground. We had more fumbles tonight than we had all season long. We just can’t do that to themselves. Kudos to my guys, I don’t care if we won by one point, we beat them.”

Miller ended the half by picking off Banda twice on defense and scoring 21 unanswered points on three touchdown passes by quarterback Andrew Body, who connected with Adrean Lloyd for two of them.

Pace’s Dylan Barron scored on two touchdown runs to lead the Vikings, and Banda threw a 31-yard touchdown to Garcia and kept drives alive with his legs throughout the night.

Miller’s Andrew Body threw for three first-half touchdowns to send Miller into the half up 21-14 after trailing 14-0.

Ambriz gives Hanna defense youthful spark

By MARK MOLINA | STAFF WRITER

The Hanna Golden Eagles have taken their share of bumps as a young, inexperienced defense, but the group has had some surprise players step up.

One of those has been defensive back Anthony Ambriz, the speedy sophomore opening eyes with his speed and ability to fly to the ball and make a play.

Ambriz has fit in well and stepped up in a big way, and has done so with urgency, making it his goal to help do his part to make sure the senior class has one last playoff run.

“I worked hard this past summer,” Ambriz said. “Most of that time, I spent working because of the seniors. It’s their last year. We’ve been down most of the games but I’ve still got two years, but I still put in the work that I need and I’m doing it for my team and the seniors so we can keep everything rolling.”

Hanna coach Mark Guess has a large group of sophomores this season but says Ambriz has separated himself from the pack.

“He’s on another level than those other sophomores in our group, even though we’ve played nine of them most of the year,” the Hanna coach said. “He’s stood out as probably the one to have the biggest impact. He’s made some plays that some other guys on the field wouldn’t be able to make. We can tell the difference when he’s not on the field with us defensively.”

Ambriz has played in eight of the team’s nine games, missing this past week’s game against Los Fresnos with a chest injury suffered against San Benito.

Still, the sophomore’s numbers have stood out, racking up 71 tackles (38 solo, one for loss) along with a forced fumble, recovery and game-changing 95-yard interception return for a touchdown against Sharyland High.

While Ambriz isn’t the biggest player on the field making tackles, he makes up for it with his speed, which has helped him adjust to the varsity game.

“It’s really helped me on defense to get to the ball faster,” he said. “Just knowing where I need to be also helps, but my speed really helps.”

Guess said Ambriz’s athleticism has given the Hanna coaches options this season, which has benefitted the young group.

“I’ll tell you what, he’s a really good athlete,” Guess said. “He’s a very good football player and a good baseball player, too, but he’s a really good football player. His athleticism has allowed us to line him up in a couple of different spots in the secondary, and he’s also football smart, too. Those intangibles that allow us to move him around and for him to make plays in his position has been really good for us defensively.”

While this season has been a season of hurdles when compared to last year’s group, which played into the third round of the state playoffs, Ambriz sees it as sort of a trial by fire and has tried to find the silver lining.

“I’ve learned to man up more,” he said. “I’ve really had to mature more. I didn’t expect (to have the year I’m having). We had a stacked team in the beginning but we’ve lost some players, so I’ve had to step up.”

With two years left to go, the options seem to be endless with the speedy DB, but Ambriz will have to step up in a big way this week when the Eagles head to Harlingen’s Boggus Stadium for a do-or-die matchup with Harlingen South.

But when it’s all said and done, the first-year varsity player feels this season has set him up to stay successful going forward.

“I feel this year is going to help me in the upcoming years,” Ambriz said. “I’m more prepared, and I know what to do over the next two years.”

Vikings’ defense paves way for win over Chargers

MARK MOLINA | Staff Writer

In a game with District 16-5A Division I playoff implications, it was the young Pace Vikings defense that made plays when they mattered against Brownsville Veterans Memorial.

The Vikings’ defense allowed just seven second-half points and forced two turnovers, giving the team’s offense opportunities to milk the clock and hang on for a 26-21 victory over the Chargers on Friday night at Sams Memorial Stadium.

Leading 23-14 midway through the third quarter, the Vikings recorded turnovers on back-to-back possessions, forcing a fumble on one drive and defensive back Matthew Garza intercepting Brownsville Veterans QB Marlon Montelongo on the next.

“As I said before, we’re young, but we’re no longer inexperienced,” Pace coach Danny Pardo said. “The defense has been in enough big games to make plays. That interception was big and that fumble was big. I don’t know what else to tell you — they played big tonight.”

The win lifts Pace to 6-2 in district play and puts them in fourth place in the postseason, while the Chargers fall to 5-3 in district play and will finish up the season next week against 7-1 La Joya Palmview.

Those Chargers turnovers ultimately led to the Vikings extending their lead to 26-14 with eight minutes to play following a Christopher Zapata 22-yard field goal.

The Chargers scored once more on a 9-yard Montelongo touchdown run with 6:25 to play, but Pace quarterback Jose Banda led a 13-play drive to the BVM 3 and killed the clock to secure the win.

The Chargers turned over the ball three times on the night, two more times than Pace, which is what Brownsville Veterans coach David Cantu said was ultimately the difference.

“It was a very even matchup,” Cantu said. “It was Pace’s ability to move the ball, and their ability to move the chains (made the difference). It just came down to us making more mistakes than they did. I said this was going to be like a playoff game and it was going to be sad to see one really good team possibly not make the (postseason). Kudos to Pace, Coach Pardo and his coaching staff. They came out on top.”

Banda passed for 135 yards and one score, and rushed for 98 more yards to lead the Vikings. He led four long second-half drives on which the Vikings scored 10 points, but more importantly killed a lot of clock.

“The last drive, man, the offense worked their (rear ends) off,” Pardo said. “They moved the ball when they needed to. During a timeout, I went to my offense and said, ‘Give me a first down,’ and they came through. Last year, Banda took (the loss to Brownsville Veterans) hard. He was focused all this week … he took a lot of those drives and said, ‘I’m going to make a play here.’ He did, and showed growth and maturity and a lot of leadership.”

After a Brownsville Veterans fumble on the first drive of the game, Pace’s Dylan Barron broke a 38-yard run two plays later and scored from 2 yards out moments after to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead with 8:23 to play in the first after a missed point-after attempt.

Barron rushed for more than 100 yards on the night and helped lead a big night from the Vikings’ run game.

Pace forced a BVM punt on the ensuing possession, but Barron fumbled the ball on the first play, and it was recovered by the Chargers.

BVM quarterback/running back Marlon Montelongo scored on a 6-yard run nine plays later to put the Chargers on top 7-6 with 3:37 left in the first.

After a field goal by Zapata made it 9-7, Montelongo scored his second touchdown on a 1-yard run to cap a 14-play drive and make it 14-9 with less than four minutes to go in the half.

Montelongo, playing sparingly for banged-up starter Liam Longoria, rushed for 33 yards and three scores. Ramirez rushed for a team-high 84 yards on the ground.

Banda led his team down the field and put the Vikings up 16-9 three seconds before halftime on an 8-yard touchdown pass to Marc Garcia.

The Vikings opened the second half with a near four-minute drive, capped by a 62-yard halfback pass from Matthew Cuellar to Ilijah Solis to make it 23-14 with 8:38 to play in the third quarter.

Pace scored on the final drive before the half, right after the break and killed the clock on its final possession of the game.

Offensive line no longer a question for Chargers

By MARK MOLINA | Staff Writer

While the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers knew they had a good crop of offensive pieces back alongside senior quarterback Liam Longoria, they knew they might face a struggle behind an offensive line that returned no full-time starters.

Fast forward to now, and the Chargers are 5-2 in District 16-5A Division I and their offensive line has been anything but the liability those on the outside viewed them as back in August.

“We knew coming in with the offensive line, seeing how they were all new, that it was going to be a challenge,” Chargers coach David Cantu said. “Since spring football, they’ve really embraced that. They felt they wanted to prove themselves, and they really have progressed.”

The line is comprised of seniors Tommy Mercado, Donovan Escobar and Jose Braulio Moreno, and juniors Randy Vasquez and Nathan John, and has helped the Chargers average better than 35 points and 191.3 yards rushing during their three-game winning streak.

Cantu said the willing group under the tutelage of offensive coordinator Sammy Montalvo and assistant coach Gilbert Meyers has been the perfect combination.

“It all starts with the men who coach them in,” Cantu said. “(Montalvo) works with everybody, and he’s not going to let that line go. (Meyers) has been here at Veterans for eight years now, and he helped develop a good line. We also added Juan Torres, who came over this year, and he’s an intelligent individual who has brought a lot to the table. That combination of coaches and kids that are coachable has resulted in an offensive line that we’re confident in.”

Of the group, Mercado is the only player with any experience, playing as the sixth man in last year’s rotation. Escobar was a defensive lineman one year ago and the other three played on subvarsity teams.

“If I’m being honest, coming in, I was a little worried,” Escobar said. “There were new faces like me, (Nathan) John, Randy, but as the season progressed we really saw that we weren’t the weak core of our team. We weren’t what everyone thought we were. We really have proved a lot of people wrong.

It was a long process, but once the players began to familiarize themselves with one another, it all began to work.

“It took some time for all of us to come together,” Mercado said. “In a scrimmage against Weslaco, we were shaken up a bit. Ever since that time, we knew what we did wrong and began to communicate with each other. Eventually, as we grew together, we bonded more with each other and then really started attacking as a unit. I think that really helped us. That’s when we really started executing.”

While the battle goes on in the trenches, the Chargers’ skill players have done their part, racking up 1, 337 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground, and Longoria has passed for 1,317 yards and 10 scores.

Watching those numbers pile up on the season gives the offensive line something to puff its chest about and throw back in the faces of naysayers.

“We didn’t like (what critics said in the preseason),” Mercado said. “We wanted to fix that and I think we’ve really improved, and I think we’ve really made a lot of people think twice about what they said about us. I feel we’ve been tearing things up this season, and we are definitely not what they said we were going to be.”

“There were a lot of voices being heard that said our offensive line needed a lot of help,” Mercado added. “To be honest, I think we are the hardest working group of our team.”

Cardinals cruise to victory over Golden Eagles

By MARK MOLINA | Staff Writer

HARLINGEN — While it was billed as a clash of District 32-6A heavies, it didn’t take long for the Harlingen High Cardinals to overwhelm the visiting Hanna Golden Eagles.

Behind big performances from brothers Jaime and Justin Galvan and a stingy defense, the Cardinals cruised to a 42-8 victory over the Eagles on Friday night at Boggus Stadium.

“ It’s what you prepare for during the offseason,” Harlingen High coach Manny Gomez. “You want to progress, you want to produce and you want to get better every week. It seemed like today, we played a pretty decent game. We were moving the ball and doing what we needed to do defensively. You also have to give credit to Hanna. They have a great competitor at the helm at quarterback, and they’re well-coached. It was a great game, and I definitely like the effort of the Cardinals.”

Harlingen High moves to 2-0 in district play (6-1 overall) and takes control of first place atop the 32-6A standings with three games to play. Hanna falls to 1-1 (3-4 overall).

“ We know when we play Harlingen, we have to prepare and have the best on the field,” Hanna coach Mark Guess said. “We came out tonight and had a good game plan, and they had a game plan, too. Ultimately, the bottom line is that they executed a lot better than we did. We just have to bounce back from this one, and continue to persevere and get through this season. In the end, we have three games guaranteed left, and we really feel we will make a run at the playoffs.”

Quarterback Jaime Galvan did it all for the Harlingen High offense, passing for three touchdowns, rushing for one and catching another on a throwback pass from brother Justin, who also caught a pair of scores.

The Cardinals’ defense zeroed in on Hanna quarterback Victor Campos, sacking him six times and forcing him into a pair of interceptions as he was picked off twice by Cards defensive back Isaiah Lizcano.

The Harlingen High defense forced three turnovers overall.

“ Anytime you have an opposing quarterback back there, you want to get him off his spot and put pressure on him and rattle him up a little bit, and that’s what we did,” Gomez said. “The kids bought in, got it done and they’re having fun, that’s the most important thing collectively. The bottom line is that the credit goes to these kids. They’re doing some great things.”

Despite the Cardinals’ pressure, Guess said the slow starts and lethargic offensive output this season can be traced to early down issues, much like the ones the Eagles faced Friday night that prevented them from moving the chains and sustaining longer drives.

“ The last three weeks, I talked to the offense about us putting ourselves in a hole on first downs and getting into second- and third-and-longs,” Guess said. “That’s really giving us fits and putting us in a bind. We have got to get positive yards on first down. If we don’t we’ll continue to struggle.”

Harlingen High scored on its first two drives, with Jaime Galvan passes to Ryan Elizondo from 7 yards out and to Jaime Galvan from 17 to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter.

Hanna’s only score during the first half came on a safety, a botched Harlingen High snap on a punt in the second quarter, but it did nothing with the ensuing possession.

Jaime Galvan found paydirt later in the second on a 14-yard touchdown run, and then scored on a 40-yard touchdown catch on a throwback pass from Justin Galvan to make it 28-2 at the half.

“ They’re both great competitors,” Gomez said of the Galvan brothers. “Their whole family is. We had three other Galvans come through here, but it’s a great family. They’re great kids, and they definitely put in lots of work. Sometimes you have to kick them out of the field house — those guys are always there. I love those kids. Their energy, their effort, their want-to and will is spreading all over.”

The Cards scored twice more during the second half, on a Jaime Galvan to Justin Galvan touchdown pass and an Isaiah Perales run.

Hanna’s only offensive score came late in the fourth on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Campos to Sabian Arceneaux with the game well out of reach.

Trinidad helping out Eagles’ offense, defense

The Hanna Golden Eagles took a big hit when do-it-all wide receiver Miguel Payan graduated last spring.

Completely replacing the impact Payan had may not be in the cards, but Hanna has benefited from a similar impact from junior Ryan Trinidad.

Trinidad not only hauls in passes but also plays safety and serves as the holder on placekicks, which has been a little bit more than he first anticipated coming into the year.

“It’s fun and I like doing it,” the junior wideout said. “I just expected to come in and play receiver. I didn’t expect to play defense and have to tackle and stuff. I expected to hold for field goals and (extra points), but I never really pictured myself on the safety side.”

Trinidad is second on the team in terms of receptions and yards with 18 catches for 275 yards and one touchdown, helping make up a productive tripod of receivers that also includes Josiah Meyers (18-295) and Alex Gracia (21-225).

The Eagles’ receiver also helped lead the team to their first victory with five catches, 118 yards and one score in a 21-19 win against Weslaco East.

On defense, Trinidad also has four pass deflections, an interception and a forced fumble on defense.

Hanna coach Mark Guess said being able to have another plug-and-play guy this season obviously has been a plus, noting how balanced he has been playing on both sides.

“Myers, Gracia and Trinidad have all come up and made some good plays, but Trinidad has had more of an impact for the fact that he also plays defense,” Guess said. “He does a good job of it. The impact that he has on both sides is that he helps move the chains offensively, and that he does a good job of having a nose for the ball in the passing game when we’re on defense. We just look for him to keep contributing and do the best that he can.”

It’s been a tall order for Trinidad, as he lends a hand on a defense that lost so many starters and key contributors from a solid group last season.

The bar has been set high for the junior receiver/safety, but he said the key is to be a team player and try to live up to expectations.

“I just try to do my job out there and read the quarterback,” Trinidad said. “I want to do what they taught me when it comes to reading the quarterback and tackling. I’m just trying to do my job and live up to the expectations of last year’s team, which are pretty high. So I have to try and fill in their shoes.”
