LA FERIA — With Hurricane Harvey churning in the Gulf of Mexico, most teams had the challenge of either cancelling or rescheduling their scrimmages.
And while many chose to simply cancel, La Feria and Brownsville Lopez pressed on and moved up their scrimmage from a 6:30 start to a 3:30 p.m. start Thursday afternoon.
Despite the juggling of a kickoff time, the Lions outgunned the Lobos 41-34, wrapping up their preseason. La Feria will now prepare for their regular-season opener Sept. 1 at Raymondville.
Brownsville Lopez held a 14-7 advantage at halftime, despite both offenses struggling to find their form. The second half was a different story, however, as the teams answered each other’s blows. La Feria sophomore quarterback Dorian Hernandez threw three touchdowns and guided the Lions’ offense to 27 points in the second half.
“It was tough trying to get the boys focused,” said Lions coach Oscar Salinas. “We came out a little flat in the beginning, but as the game went on we settled down. I told them before the game there will be adversity and things can change so today was a good practice for those things.”
La Feria took a 35-28 lead on a touchdown pass from Hernandez to Julian Trevino with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
With time winding down and Brownsville Lopez on the move, cornerback Justin Martinez stepped in front of a pass and returned it for a score. Martinez’s pick six sealed the deal for the Lions.
