Joshua McGowen succeeding for McAllen High by leaps and bounds

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Joshua McGowen is unfazed by spectators. Instead, he encourages them.
While competing in the boys long jump during Saturday’s McAllen ISD Invitational, the McAllen High senior got those in attendance to cheer him on while he attempted one of his six jumps.

With the attention focused on him and the mood to his liking, McGowen did as onlookers hoped he would — delivered on the hype in spectacular fashion.

Exploding toward the sand pit at top speed, McGowen leapt from the track like a fighter jet rocketing off a runway. With power and grace, he didn’t land before jumping 23 feet, 7 inches, claiming first place and setting a new Valley best for the season.

But that was only part of his successful afternoon. McGowen also set a new school record while winning gold in the triple jump (46-04.5) and claimed back-to-back victories in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles in 13.96 seconds and 38.40, respectively.

The numbers are nice, sure, and putting on a show only ups the fun factor. But McGowen hopes his first and final year with the Bulldogs ends at the state meet in Austin, where he’ll compete before a crowd of thousands as opposed to the relative handful who watched him Saturday.

McGowen doesn’t know if he’ll make it to state or not, but he does know how he’ll feel about the added pressure if he does.

“People watching me while I compete has never been an issue,” McGowen said. “I get into a zone before I compete. It’s like a tunnel. My nerves get up and I just focus on what I have to do. If anything, the more people there are, the better I think I can perform.”

McGowen’s best chances of medaling at the state level are the 110 and 300 hurdles, his premiere events. According to Athletic.net, he holds the second- and seventh-fastest times in the state among Class 6A competition. In the 110, McGowen is just .03 seconds behind Bryce Douglas of Allen.

Competing at the highest level is nothing new for the standout athlete. Before arriving in the Valley, McGowen lived in North Carolina, where he participated in the state track and field meet in 2015, placing fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the long jump.

Just as McGowen is jumping and hurdling his way into Valley track and field history, his youth was spent hop-scotching the globe as the son of a father in the military. McGowen’s childhood included residencies in El Paso, Germany and two stints in North Carolina.

“And that’s just the short version,” McGowen said.

But everywhere McGowen went, football and track were constants. Though the gridiron is his first love — McGowen signed with Stephen F. Austin in February — track is a close second. He says he’s been competing since his sixth grade year and is a three-time competitor in the junior olympics.

Though McGowen has gone international, however, his coaches are preoccupied with bettering him for Texas competition and are cognizant of the talent disparity between the Valley and the rest of the state.

While other Valley hurdlers, including teammate Miguel Lerma, are posting solid times this season, McGowen will likely never chase an opponent to the finish line at area meets. Improving his times despite the absence of a Valley rival begins during practice.

“You can never let him be satisfied,” McAllen High hurdling coach Louie Cantu said. “You always have to keep pushing him to be better and faster and to always be working. We don’t want him going into a meet thinking, ‘Well, I’ve already ran this time so I can take this meet off.’”

As for his workouts, McGowen is essentially refining his approach and technique. In a sport where every tick of the clock counts, no detail is too minute to overlook. His biggest area of concentration is coming off the blocks with maximum push and speed and maintaining a steady pace throughout a race.

And while McGowen is concerned with getting better and performing at a high level, he says his idea of success will hinge partly on his activities surrounding his events.

“I don’t want to be that guy who did well and then didn’t talk to anybody else or just kept to myself,” McGowen said. “I want to make those around me better, I want to help others become better, too.
“I can be as competitive as I want to be and win state, but if I do it at the expense of others, then what’s it all for?”

Mission Veterans’ Nyla Vela showing well despite nagging nerve injury

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — Nyla Vela relished success and experienced failure by the slimmest of margins Saturday. During an afternoon of up-and-down jumping competition at the McAllen ISD Invitational, diminutive distances made all the difference.

First, the bad news. Despite ranking among the best in the Valley in the girls long jump, the Mission Veterans Memorial sophomore scratched each of her three attempts in the event for the first time in her high school career — stepping over the line by a quarter of an inch on two occasions.

Now, the good news: During the triple jump, Vela won gold and set a new Valley’s best in the event with a mark of 36 feet 3.5 inches, just a quarter of an inch better than McAllen Rowe’s Jovanni Solis.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” Vela said of the close competition. “As soon as you get to the line, you make sure you don’t want to scratch. There’s a lot of stuff that goes into your jumps.”

During the early part of the season, Vela is picking up where she left off after an impressive freshman campaign wherein she demonstrated her athleticism on the hurdles in addition to her duties in field events.

But Vela’s success comes with a sense of cautious optimism as she is just a few months removed from nerve decompression surgery in her lower legs. Vela says she has limited feeling below her knees and her left ankle has little to no mobility. Such conditions are less than ideal for a jumper with a trip to the state meet on the brain.

“The surgery was supposed to remove or fix whatever was blocking the nerve endings in my legs,” Vela said. “It has a recovery time of six months to a year. It hasn’t worked so far, but I guess it’s just something I’ll have to live with.”

Vela, who wears an ankle brace during competition, says she is contemplating an additional surgery that would take place once the track season is over, but admits missing her sophomore year was never an option. In the meantime, she takes extra precautions while preparing for events. Since her left foot doesn’t move very well, she does extra calf workouts to keep her muscles as relaxed as possible.

Despite the shoddy nerves and uncooperative ankle, Vela’s coaches notice an athlete not only succeeding, but improving despite her medical shortcomings.

“When she takes off in full stride and at full speed, she jumps like a dream,” Mission Veterans jumping coach Joe Espino said. “We don’t change anything for her in terms of her mechanics, it’s still the same. We’re just always asking her how she feels.”

When Vela is pressed about her health by coaches, her answer is always the same. “I’m fine.”

But her numbers will sometimes indicate otherwise. When Espino and head track coach Kathy Howell notice Vela’s distances dip or fail to see the same lift in her jumps, they shut her down to avoid unnecessary strain on her lower extremities.

“She’s getting comfortable with her body again,” Espino said. “She’s learning to trust her instincts. The mechanics are still there. They never left. It’s more a deal of mind over matter for her right now.”

SALINAS VAULTS TO NEW PERSONAL RECORD

Weslaco High’s Sydney Salinas won the girls pole vault with a new personal best of 11-06 on Saturday, eclipsing her previous record by five inches. In doing so, Salinas also set a new Valley’s best, beating her own mark of 11-00.

“I just felt good coming into this meet today,” Salinas said. “I’ve been jumping at (11 feet) for a while now. When I jumped 11-06, I felt like I had enough of a hump to clear 12 feet.”

Salinas attempted to clear 12 feet just once, failing to do so.

Among other athletes to set new Valley’s bests at the McAllen ISD Invitational were McAllen High’s Joshua McGowen, who won gold in the boys long jump with a distance of 23-07, and Mercedes’ Jacklynn Flores, who took home first in the girls long jump with a mark of 17-07.

Wagner too much for Weslaco High in fourth round loss

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

SAN ANTONIO — Getting here is nothing new for Weslaco High. When the Lady Panthers took the court Friday at the UTSA Convocation Center, it marked the fourth time in three years in which the team advanced to the regional semifinals.

But a familiar goal was achieved via a bumpy path. While Weslaco reached similar heights in years past thanks in part to Division-I talent, this year saw an undersized and underrated Lady Panthers squad defeat opponents despite its shortcomings.

As a smaller ball club reliant on swift guard play and fundamentals, Weslaco High counted on speed and strength all season. Behind those elements, the Lady Panthers won their fourth straight district title and piled up 20 consecutive victories.

But against San Antonio Wagner, such strengths were in favor of the Lady Thunderbirds. Behind lights-out shooting from Amber Ramirez, a faster and taller Wagner team defeated Weslaco 60-35, ending the Lady Panthers’ season.

Ramirez, a senior who will play for TCU, scored 25 points and went 10-of-14 from the floor while teammate Corina Carter chipped in 14 points on 5-of-7 attempts.

Weslaco’s starting backcourt of Jazzlyn Muniz and Brianna Pena, however, struggled shooting for much of the night. Muniz and Pena finished with seven and nine points, respectively, and shot a combined 6-of-23.

That’s not to say the Lady Panthers didn’t get clean looks. The team was patient and methodical in the half court during the early going, wherein they slowed the tempo, killed clock and didn’t shoot until an open look presented itself.

“It was just one of those things where it was what it was,” Muniz said. “There really wasn’t much we could do in those situations. The ball just didn’t go in, but we still kept working and trying to get good looks.”

The Lady Panthers finish the season with an overall record of 31-7.

Wagner led 20-7 after the first quarter and ballooned its lead to a 34-15 halftime score. While Ramirez and Carter led the way for the Lady Thunderbirds, Weslaco’s best offense for much of the first half came at the foul line off of rebound opportunities.

Emily Saenz led the Panthers in rebounds with six and attempted a team-high eight free throws.
But it was Wagner who ultimately won the battle of the boards 31-22. While Weslaco doesn’t have a player taller than 5-foot-8, the Lady Thunderbirds rotated a duo of bigs between 6 feet and 6-2.

Though Weslaco’s undersized posts blocked out, Wagner’s centers simply put their hands out over the smaller Lady Panthers for several easy boards.

Despite the team’s first-half shooting woes, Weslaco discovered its offense during the third quarter, scoring 14 points — as many as Wagner during the same span. Muniz and Pena scored five points each in the quarter.

“We had some runs here and there,” Pena said. “But they had some bigger runs. You just have to deal with it.”

And running is what Wagner did from start to finish. While the Lady Thunderbirds continued to exert their size, length and quickness, all Weslaco could do during the final seconds was watch as Wagner played keep away until the final buzzer sounded.

Lady Panthers coach Griselda Fino was visibly emotional after the game. But the tears came not just because of the loss, but rather a sense of pride in a team that has arguably worked twice as hard to achieve the same goals.

“It’s a bittersweet moment for us,” Fino said. “It’s been such a ride and it’s been such a pleasure to get here. You never want to end your season, our kids obviously weren’t ready to end their season. But all good things come to an end, and this is our end.”

Weslaco High readies for regional semifinal against San Antonio Wagner

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — At this point in the season, the Lady Panthers aren’t deviating from their routine. During Thursday’s practice at Weslaco High School, the team shored up and doubled down on its strengths — defense, rebounding and transition buckets.

“This late in the game, there isn’t too much you can do,” Weslaco coach Griselda Fino said. “You are who you are.”

And what the Lady Panthers are is the lone remaining Valley girls team in the UIL tournament, cementing Fino’s season-long goal of achieving the same results despite coaching a team full of new faces.

Even though Weslaco graduated six seniors from last year’s team, it claimed its fourth district title in as many years and has won 20 consecutive games, including a double-digit victory over Harlingen High during Monday’s regional quarterfinal.

As a reward for their success, the Lady Panthers will face their toughest opponent at 6 p.m. today at UTSA when they take on San Antonio Wagner in a Region IV Class 6A semifinal. Weslaco is making its first trip to the regional tournament since the 2013-14 season.

Though Wagner (24-10) is a young team with just two seniors on the roster, the Lady Thunderbirds are driven by a one-two punch of speed and size. Senior guard and TCU commit Amber Ramirez leads the team’s quick perimeter attack, while a pair of 6-foot centers anchor their interior game.

But being undersized is nothing new to Weslaco (31-6). Even during District 31-6A competition, the team was often the smallest one on the court.

“We’re not afraid of size,” senior guard Jazzlyn Muñiz said. “Even though we’re small, we still box out. And if someone goes over the back to get the rebound, that puts us on the line. We’re always small, but that hasn’t stopped us from succeeding.”

Controlling the glass was one factor during Weslaco’s win over Harlingen, wherein owning the boards meant controlling the tempo. Fino has stressed the same strategy for Wagner — a team she says is the fastest the Lady Panthers have seen all year.

Aside from rebounding, Weslaco will need every player to be a scoring threat. Muñiz and teammates Brianna Peña average 17 and 14 points, respectively, but both scored in the single digits against Harlingen, often serving as decoys on the perimeter to open up the Lady Panthers’ inside game.

Just as important as scoring will be Weslaco’s defensive strategy for a Wagner team that can shoot from nearly anywhere on the court. Muñiz, who will likely guard Ramirez, says patience and a tough mental aptitude will help limit the Lady Thunderbirds.

“I just have to stay in the game,” Muñiz said. “She’s going to get her points, but that’s the way the game is. Everyone is going to get buckets on you at some point. You just can’t let it get to you.”

Just as Muñiz recognizes the task at hand, so do does Fino.

“I told the girls that Wagner is one of those teams where we will likely win only one game out of 10,” Fino said. “We have to make this that one game if we want to keep playing.”

Upper-Valley #RGVTrack Notebook: Edinburg Economedes boys posting fast times despite injuries

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

The Edinburg Economedes boys track and field team entered the Hudson Relays at La Feria last week with lingering injuries, but still managed to post some of the fastest times in the Valley during the early part of the season.

Junior Bony Rios won gold in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.64 seconds, setting the season’s second-fastest time in the event behind McAllen High’s Joshua McGowen. Rios, a regional qualifier in the hurdles last year, is working his way back from a left knee sprain suffered during a preseason workout. Despite the setback, Rios was given the green light by trainers to resume competition.

“He’s not 100 percent yet, so for him to be hitting the times he’s hitting, I’m pretty excited about it,” Econ boys coach Brandon Solis said. “I feel like he’s going to improve quite a bit more. … The injury is healed enough. It still bothers him a little bit, some days he’ll limp a little. But he’s got to get over it at some point.”

Rios’ teammate Charlie Vela is dealing with a nagging injury as well in the form of a tender hamstring. At less than full strength, however, Vela’s fourth-place time of 11.14 in the 100 dash is still the fifth fastest time in the Valley. Vela won gold in the 100 at the District 31-6A meet a season ago and looks to contend for back-to-back titles when fully healthy.

Solis says Vela will likely sit out of Saturday’s action at the McAllen ISD Invitational at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Aside from individual events, Econ demonstrated its team speed in the 400-meter relay, winning gold and setting a new Valley’s best in 43.21. Every member of the relay team, including Vela, Jesse Gonzalez, Michael Medellin and Pete Segura, were members of the Econ football team.

“We have a lot of kids that play a lot of other sports, and we sell them on track by telling them it will make them faster in all of their other activities,” Solis said. “It’s getting harder and harder to recruit kids in track and keep them there, so that’s one thing we do that’s really working for us.”

THROW SOME MORE

A season ago, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln was defined by its boys relay teams and the middle distance running of state qualifier, Yariel Matute. This year, it’s the Lady Huskies who may possess the team’s best chances of advancing to the UIL state meet in Austin.

When Juarez-Lincoln competes Saturday at the McAllen ISD Invitational, the team will bring along two throwers who rank in the Valley’s best for girls shot put and discus. Junior Felicita Saenz will enter with the sixth-best shot put throw of 35 feet 6 inches, while teammate Karen Guerra, a senior, holds the Valley’s best distance in the discus with a mark of 131-04.

For Saenz, who got a late start on the season due to girls basketball, the season-long goal is to improve her throwing speed. To do so, Juarez-Lincoln throwing coach Edrick Alvarez is emphasizing a style of throwing that requires full body rotation.

“The type of throws she’s doing now is only going to get her so far,” Alvarez said. “She’s still a little shaky. Full body rotation has a lot of the same movements as discus. We’re working with her to get her rotation down and building confidence with her.”

As for Guerra, a more polished and experienced thrower, her workout routine includes putting in time at the gym, working with weights and doing hip exercises.

“We’ve been trying to strengthen her lower body,” Alvarez said. “We got her some new throwing shoes that are some of the better ones you can find on the market. They made her ankles shake like a baby lamb learning to walk. We’ve done a bit more balancing work, and she doesn’t shake anymore. She can balance and land in the correct position. That’ll help her killer instinct a lot.”
