Weslaco High’s Janet Figueroa overcomes heart murmur to compete in distance running

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — For distance runners, pain is merely an occupational hazard. The body endures only so much before it kicks back. But as Janet Figueroa crossed the finish line Saturday at the Meet of Champions, any discomfort was replaced with elation.

As the Weslaco High senior read the results for the girls 3,200-meter run on the video scoreboard at Bobby Lackey Stadium, her time of 11 minutes 25.19 seconds was a new personal best, almost 30 seconds better than her previous record.

So what if she only placed seventh? Figueroa is simply happy to compete, pain free or not.

Only weeks away from graduating, this marks Figueroa’s first and final season participating at the varsity level. She’s always harbored ambitions of competing, but her desires were caged in a body once ill-suited for athletics.

Figueroa was born with a heart murmur. As a child, physical activities were often met with early fatigue and discomfort, sometimes sputtering as quickly as she began. She was a Mustang running on vegetable oil.

“I’ve always liked running and I was always running when I was little, but I would get tired too easily,” Figueroa said. “It happened so much, it just became a regular pain.”

Though her heart would occasionally act up, she learned to compartmentalize the issue and deal with it on a day-to-day basis. Right, she has a bad ticker. Right, she breathes.

So unpredictable and weary was Figueroa’s heart, even rudimentary activities in sixth grade P.E. gave her fits. It was around that time when she underwent a procedure to rectify her condition. Doctors plugged the hole in her heart during a minimally invasive surgery. Beginning near her groin and weaving through a maze of arteries and vessels, Figueroa’s heart was made anew.

It wasn’t until her junior year that she tried out for sports. Looking for a change of pace, she went out for track. As a novice-as-upperclassmen, she was assigned to the JV unit wherein she attempted competing on sprint relays. But as coach Pablo Almaguer watched, he saw a different path to success.

“She’s a little too short to be a sprinter,” Almaguer said. “There were some taller girls with longer legs who were always going to give her problems. But she had that endurance. She could run all day.”

And so it was that Figueroa made her varsity debut in the fall as a member of the Lady Panthers cross country team. Though a new face on a squad led in part by some of the area’s fastest distance runners, she held her own. At the Islander Splash Invitational at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Figueroa ran 5,000 meters in 21:57.6, placing 25th out of 111 participants.

But Figueroa’s season would end prematurely. Due to an excessive workload on relatively untested knees, including routine six-mile workouts, Figueroa developed patellar tendonitis in her right knee. At first the pain only nagged, like getting stung by a sweat bee. By October, it caused her to limp and made running unbearable.

“She was practicing in the pool for two weeks to try and see if that didn’t help,” Almaguer said. “She gave it another go, and we just shut her down. We didn’t want to risk anything.”

With surgery a possible option, it appeared Figueroa’s stint as an athlete was over as quickly as it began. But with enough rest, her knee healed itself. In December, Figueroa approached Almaguer about running the mile and the two mile for the girls track and field team.

Though Figueroa says she still feels an occasional twinge in her afflicted knee, she’s by and large been healthy. Still, her medical history hovers over her during every race.

“I pay attention to my body all the time,” Figueroa said. “If I feel pain during a race, I’m trying to see if it’s just because I’m running, or if it’s my body telling me something else.”

Heading into the first day of the District 31-6A championships today at PSJA Stadium in Pharr, Figueroa is looking to add to her medal count. To date, she has collected five individual medals (all bronze) and can automatically qualify for the area round meet with by placing in the top four.

This late in the season, Figueroa is still learning the pace, rhythms and strategy of distance running: knowing when to kick, balancing the need to remain near the front of the pack without exhausting herself in the process.

“She’s only just now starting to get the Xs and Os of running,” Almaguer said. “But you can see it. It’s there and she has to ability to keep improving. Right now she’s nobody because she’s come out of nowhere. But she’s going to make a name for herself.”

Sharyland High sweeps District 31-5A golf meet

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — For the girls, it was expected. The beginning of a journey that could culminate in a third consecutive trip to state. For the boys, it was a chance to erase the stain of last season’s disappointment at the expense of a familiar foe.

For Sharyland High School, it was just another day on the greens.

Behind a concerted focus on their short game, the Rattlers swept the District 31-5A Championships on Tuesday at Shary Golf Course. The Lady Rattlers won in decisive fashion with a team score of 597, beating second place Sharyland Pioneer by 86 strokes. The boys contest was more dramatic, however, as Sharyland High (610) clipped Edinburg Vela by just 12 strokes.

“Winning district championships at Sharyland is all about the tradition,” coach Fernando Rodriguez said. “It’s expected for us.”

The victory secures an automatic bid to compete in regional competition next week in San Antonio. To qualify, a team must place first or second at district.

The Rattlers were led by freshman Jun Min Lee, who claimed the individual boys title with a two-day score of 138. Lee has been playing the game since he was 7 years old, and frequently competes in tournaments outside the Valley.

Traveling hundreds of miles outside the area is a relative stroll on the fairway for Lee, who moved from South Korea with his family in 2007. It was in his native country where Lee developed an infatuation for the game. His father owned an indoor range, and Lee would work on his swing whenever he could.

Despite his impressive showing during district competition, Lee was concerned heading into the tournament. He scored a 94 at a pre-district meet earlier this year that left his confidence shaken.

“I really focused on my short game,” Lee said. “I went back to working on my putting and my chipping about three months ago. My short game has been getting a lot better, that’s why I shot the scores that I did. My long game has always been good, but I just needed my short game to catch up.”

For the Lady Rattlers, it was another dominating performance for a team that considers anything short of an appearance at the state meet a bust. All five members of the Sharyland ‘A’ team scored in the individual Top 10, including Mariana Flores, who won the girls crown with a two-day score of 138, edging out teammates Ana Jose Eraña and Laura Rodriguez by one stroke.

Like Linn, Flores emphasized her short game during practices leading up to the tournament.

Although focusing on putts paid dividends in district, all the work comes with an eye towards something bigger.

“Everything we do here, are swings, where we put the ball on the fairways, our driving, everything is only going to help us keep getting better,” Flores said. “We especially need to keep getting better because of the courses up north, they’re a bit more difficult.”

Despite high standards to which they hold themselves, the Lady Rattlers play not like a team coiled up by nerves and anxiety. Instead, they carry themselves like a team who’s been there before, and hope to get back to where they know they belong.

“You just have to make sure the kids stay focused this time of year,” Rodriguez said. “You can’t lose focus because once you start doing that, you start throwing strokes away, and you can’t do that.”

Weslaco High’s Leeroy Garcia is in the driver seat at Meet of Champions

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

MORE: View results from the Meet of Champions

WESLACO — By doctors’ orders, Leeroy Garcia is supposed to be in a wheelchair. But Garcia, as headstrong as any high school freshman, refuses. He won’t even use crutches. Instead, Garcia is content to walk, albeit with a significant limp.

Garcia was born with spina bifida, a birth defect that affects mobility in the lower body. And while Garcia longs to be treated like everyone else, he recognizes the limits of his condition.

“I never thought I would be an athlete,” Garcia said. “I didn’t think I could compete because of my legs and hips.”

But thanks to the wheelchair, of all things, Garcia took his place alongside fellow Valley-athletes during the Meet of Champions on Saturday at Bobby Lackey Stadium, competing for Weslaco High in the 100 and 400-meter dash wheelchair division.

This is the third year for UIL wheelchair events in track and field and the second year in which Valley Paralympic athletes have competed. Garcia finished the 100 with a time of 28.04 seconds and the 400 in 1:46.00.

Joining Garcia is teammate Joe Solis, a sophomore who competed in the wheelchair division last year. Though Solis bested Garcia in both events, each athlete competes against the clock instead of each other. Solis, who has more mobility in his body, will compete in a different division at the state level, while Garcia will be placed in heats with racers with whom he shares similar times.

“I have a hard time steering,” Garcia said. “I’m not used to being in a wheelchair and aI can’t move my hips very well.”

Rather than using his hips to steer, Garcia guides his way around the track by hand with a steering rod. He says going in a straight line is the most difficult part of racing, but Garcia gets along just fine. His times in the 100 and 400 meet the UIL standard to advance to the state level of competition.

“I’ve been learning a lot from Joe and the coaches at practice,” Garcia said. “I’ve been working hard to try and get better and drop my times.”

Garcia first came to the attention of Weslaco boys coach Gustavo Cabrera during a stint in the gym. Garcia sat in on his older brother’s powerlifting workouts when he was noticed by Cabrera. Along with girls coach Pablo Almaguer, the pair didn’t have to try too hard to convince Garcia to join track.

“I said yes right away,” Garcia said. “I didn’t even have to think about it. It was something I never thought I would do.”

NEAR-RECORD ROBLES
La Joya Palmview’s Brianna Robles ran the second fastest time in Valley history in the girls 3200-meter run Saturday with a time of 10 minutes, 49.57 seconds, bested only by the record of 10:48.69 set by La Joya Juarez-Lincoln’s Emily Perez in 2012.

Making Robles’ achievement more impressive is the fact she spent part of the final 400 meters seemingly stuck in second place. As Robles entered the backstretch on the final lap behind Edinburg North’s Beth Ramos, a two-second gap separated them. That’s when Robles knew she had to kick.

“It was just a spur of the moment thing,” Robles said. “I just didn’t want to get second. I just kept going and going and didn’t look back.”

Robles followed up her performance in the 3200 with a gold medal finish in the 1600 in 5:06.03. The sophomore will take to the track April 12 and 14 during the District 30-6A championships.

“This race was a good point to get me ready for regionals and to ultimately try and get to state,” Robles said. “I know I have to keep running faster.”

WESLACO SWEEP
The Weslaco boys and girls swept the team standings Saturday during the final pre-district meet of the season. The boys 800 relay team won gold with a time of 1:29.84 while the girls swept all three relay events.

NEXT MEET
The District 31-6A championships will be held Thursday and Saturday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr. Thursday will be comprised of field event finals and track preliminaries, with track finals being held Saturday.

Roma’s Rocha following sister’s footsteps

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG — Krissynthia Rocha knows plenty about sibling rivalries. Be it volleyball, basketball or track and field, Rocha has spent much of her youth playing alongside her older sister, and mentor, Kassy.

But for Rocha’s senior season with Roma, she finds herself without her familial competitor. With Kassy at UTRGV as a freshman member of the women’s track team, Krissynthia plays onward and out of the shadow of big sis.

Rocha will follow Kassy on the court one more time Saturday at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo when she competes in the sixth annual All-Valley Showcase presented by RGVSports.com and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, playing in the same event her sister did a year ago.

“It’s fun getting a chance to play with so many good players from the Valley,” Rocha said. “It’s been a fun experience practicing and learning plays with them.”
Rocha is mum as to who is better on the hardwood between herself and Kassy, but says there are more similarities than differences. Both were guards who could shoot and handle the ball, and both could defend multiple positions depending on the matchup.

“She taught me a lot about the game,” Rocha said. “I learned a lot from watching her, and not just about playing, but about being a leader. She inspired me a lot, still inspires me.”

Though practicing alongside the Valley’s most talented players — including district foes Jaida Muhamamd (Edinburg Vela) and Anna Marshal (Sharyland High) — has a been an enjoyable experience, Rocha can’t help but feel a sour taste in her mouth for the way Roma’s season ended.

The Lady Gladiators finished 7-5 in District 31-5A, sweeping Mission Veterans Memorial in the process. But the team managed to only tie Vela for the final playoff spot. Though Roma led during the second half of a play-in game against the Lady SaberCats, the Lady Gladiators ultimately lost 54-49.

“We obviously wanted to get the playoffs,” Rocha said. “It took a while to get over that game. This season was kind of tough because we had a lot of injuries, and I had a hamstring as well. It was tough to play through and miss some time. But we still had a chance, things just didn’t go our way.”

The Lady Gladiators made the postseason a year ago, defeating Donna High in the bi-district round before losing to Victoria West in the area round.

Though Saturday’s showcase is a chance for the Valley to display its best basketball talent, there will also be bragging rights at stake. Rocha, a member of the West team, will help her teammates look to end the East team’s three-year winning streak.

“The coaches have been trying to put a chip on our shoulder,” Rocha said. “I’m not sure how the game will play out, but it would be nice to win one for our side.”

McAllen Rowe’s Jiovanni Solis setting the mark in triple jump despite injury

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — Even on a bad day, Jovanni Solis is tough to beat.

Despite competing with an injured right ankle in the girls triple jump during her last three meets, the McAllen Rowe sophomore has pulled through with consistent effort and improving distances.

After placing second on Feb. 27 at the McAllen ISD Invitational with a jump of 36 feet 3.25 inches, Solis has won back-to-back gold in the event, jumping a 36-04.25 at the Patriot Relays earlier this month before placing first with a distance of 36-11.75 on Thursday at the Rey Ramirez Relays at Tom Landry Stadium.

Solis’ podium-topping performance set a new Valley’s best for the season.

Solis first sprained her ankle during basketball season, but reaggravated it during the McAllen meet with a series of awkward landings. Though Solis kept competing despite the injury — she was assigned to different events in order to help the recovery process — she made her debut in the 800-meter run Thursday in order to keep the ankle loose.

“All we’re doing right now is keeping her in shape,” Rowe girls coach Lupe Soza said. “She ran her events nice today. Next week, I don’t know what we’re going to do. We may start to become more concentrated, but right now my main concern is district and getting her past the area meet.”

Solis won silver in the long and triple jump a season ago at the District 30-6A meet and has added 15 pounds of muscle since that time. As a result, her jumps are more powerful and her sprints are faster.

Along with the added strength, Solis is also focusing on the finesse in her jumps and controlling her body while she’s airborne.

“Whenever I jump, my arms go straight down,” Solis said. “I need to keep moving them and I don’t even know if I can do that, yet. I’m just focusing on my steps right now.

Soza says the biggest factor of Solis’ improvement is her ability to mesh her physical gifts with her mental fortitude. Soza refers to Solis as a bright athlete who doesn’t fully know her own strength or how to harness it just yet.

That’s not to say she hasn’t seen signs of her full potential.
“She’ll blows us away during practice and we’ll ask her what she was doing,” Soza said. “She’ll say, ‘Oh, I was just trying to see if I could do a jump this certain way.’ She’s just a kid. She doesn’t know how strong she really is yet. She’ll get there, though.”

MARC ON A MISSION

Marc Garcia waltzed through the boys 300 hurdles with ease Thursday, but walked away disappointed. Though he added another gold medal to his collection, his time of 40.53 seconds left him flustered and feeling empty.

Though Garcia holds the Valley’s third best time in the 300 hurdles (39.62), the two athletes ahead of him — La Joya Juarez-Lincoln’s Carlos Serna and McAllen High’s Joshua McGowen — double as district competition.

“At this point in the season, it’s all about trying to keep up with the times that are happening in district,” Garcia said. “I didn’t do that today. I’m actually pretty disappointed.”

Though McGowen and Serna were absent from Thursday’s meet, Garcia has competed against each of them at previous meets this season. Garcia hasn’t picked McGowen’s brain regarding training and practice itineraries, but has spoken with Serna and has tried emulating Juarez’s workouts in addition to his own, practicing the hurdles nearly 8 hours per week.

“Our hardest workouts are on Mondays, and the rest we focus on some of the smaller things like relays and sprints,” Garcia said. “At Juarez, they have our Monday workouts every day. So after my own practices, I stay a little later and keep pushing and striving to get to where I want to be.”

Upper-Valley #RGVTrack Notebook: McAllen’s fastest to compete at Harlingen Relays

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

Aside from bragging rights, today’s pre-district meet in Harlingen doesn’t mean much in the larger scheme of the track and field season, and Joshua McGowen hopes to keep it that way.

That’s not to say he doesn’t understand the hype given the circumstances.

Though the McAllen High senior is spending the season demonstrating his prowess on the hurdles — McGowen holds the nation’s fastest time in the boys 110-meter hurdles (13.59 seconds) according to Athletic.net — McGowen will rest his legs at Boggus Stadium and instead compete in the boys 100 and 200 dash.

Joining McGowen in both events will be a pair of athletes from McAllen Memorial, Michael Boltie and Trevor Speights. Boltie holds the Valley’s fastest time in the 100 (10.74) and the 200 (21.36) while Speights holds the sixth fastest time in the 100 (11.14).

Though the sprinting events will provide those in attendance with a must-watch showdown, McGowen says the timing is coincidental and more to do with preparation for the District 30-6A meet than showboating.

“It’s more about making sure my legs stay flexible with speed,” McGowen said. “We knew there were going to be a few meets where we wouldn’t do the hurdles, so I don’t stress too much.”

McGowen will also compete in the long jump and serve as the first leg in the 800-meter relay. He has yet to run the 100 this season and ran the 200 on Feb 19 at the Hog Relays at PSJA Stadium in Pharr. His time of 22.45 seconds is the fifth fastest time in the Valley this year.

McGowen is familiar with Speights, having competed against the Stanford signee during football season. McGowen also ran against Boltie during the summer.

“This will just be a speed workout for Trevor,” McGowen said to downplay the meet’s significance. “In the end, theses races don’t say anything. In a track meet, anything is possible. It could be a great day or just a good day. It all comes down to minor things.”

HIPS DON’T LIE

After suffering a mid-season hip flexor strain, La Joya Palmview’s Mirna Tamez was given a lighter load. To prevent the injury from worsening, the sprinter and jumper was relegated to the Lady Lobos’ sprint relays.

With nearly two weeks of adequate rest, however, Tamez showed her abilities when healthy at the Patriot Relays on March 11 in Mission. The junior won a trio of medals, including a pair of gold for her efforts in the girls 100 dash (12.63) and the long jump (17 feet 10 inches) and a bronze in the triple jump (35-09.25).

“We’ve been working her back slowly,” Palmview coach Claudia Bazan said. “It’s been a slow progression, but she’s gotten to where she needs to be. She wanted to break the school record in the long jump, and she was finally able to do that.”

Bazan estimates that Tamez is 95 percent healthy, and that her race-day itinerary has returned to its pre-injury workload. Tamez will compete today at the Rey Ramirez Relays in Mission in the 100 dash, the long jump, triple jump and the 400 and 800 relays.

But more than health, Bazan is stressing confidence for Tamez, especially in the triple jump, an event Tamez has competed in only twice.

“That event is more taxing on the body,” Bazan said. “It takes a bigger toll because of the way she lands. She needs that confidence. I think she’ll get there. We’re just taking things one meet at a time and going from there.”

RAMIREZ RELAYS MOVED

Due to Wednesday’s double murder involving members of Rio Grande City CISD, today’s Rey Ramirez Relays have been moved from Joe R. Sanchez Stadium in Rio Grande City to Tom Landry Stadium in Mission. Track preliminaries and field events begin at 1 p.m. Track finals begin 90 minutes after prelims conclude.
