La Joya Palmview beats McAllen High, puts district on notice

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

LA JOYA — La Joya Palmview coach Anisa Reyna made her intentions clear before District 30-6A competition, her Lady Lobos were to not simply compete, but to win games and gain something the program has seldom received – attention.

Starting the season 10-5 and being placed at No. 10 in this week’s RGVSports.com Top 10 rankings wasn’t enough. For Reyna, the real test would come against McAllen High.

“They’re our measuring stick,” Reyna said. “District is all about McHi, and the McAllen schools.”

The Lady Lobos (11-5, 2-0) will have to look for a new barometer after defeating the Lady Bulldogs on Friday at Palmview by a score of 60-47.

“The girls have really come together and are blossoming right now,” Reyna said.

Palmview’s effort was indeed a team oriented affair. Every player who stepped on the court scored, none more so than Samantha Gutierrez. The junior guard posted a game-high 20 points on 7 of 13 shooting including 5 of 8 from the free throw line.

The Lady Lobos scored in all facets of the game: transition steals, put backs, banked-in 3-pointers and quick bursts to the basket. The biggest advantage for Palmview, however, came at the charity stripe, where the team had a 33-13 differential in free throw attempts. The Lady Bulldogs (10-11, 0-1) saw four players foul out.

Palmview held a just a 26-21 advantage at halftime despite outrebounding McHi 19-10. The Lady Lobos guards were turnover prone, leading to extra possessions for the Lady Bulldogs.

A 17-point third quarter from Palmview, however, effectively sealed the win. In that quarter, senior forward Monica Noyola scored eight of her 19 points, including a top-of-the-key three.

“There was no trick to it,” Noyola said. “Coach always says to pop it. If (we’re) open, pop it.”

For McHi, the offensive bubble burst in the second half. Without senior forward Savanna Weaver, who dressed but did not play due to a torn right ACL, the Lady Bulldogs had minimal presence in the paint.

“We looked at (her) in warmups,” Gonzalez said. “But we don’t want to push it. We didn’t think it was the best thing for her.”

Weaver suffered the injury a month ago and was cleared to play Monday. Gonzalez said Weaver is day-to-day going forward.

Without their go-to big, McHi became a team of jump shooters who couldn’t find their shot. The trio of Ericka Mora, Kathy Maravilla and Heaven Wilbanks combined for just 8 of 32 from the floor. The Lady Bulldogs trailed by as many as 20 points in the final quarter.

“Our strength is our speed,” Reyna said. “And our (forwards) did a hell of job tonight rebounding. Cyndar Magallon and Ariana Ramierez each grabbed 10 rebounds, and no one on McHi had more than four boards.

Edinburg Vela defeats Sharyland in district opener

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — The Edinburg Vela girls basketball team won with a different kind of size advantage Tuesday night in a 54-38 win over the Sharyland High Lady Rattlers.

Though Sharyland sported the towering twosome of Maddie Garza, a 5-foot-11 senior and reserve forward Anna Marshall, a 6-foot sophomore, the Lady Rattlers lacked in other areas against their District 31-5A foe.

“Our guards were just small,” Sharyland coach Dale Whitaker said. “We can’t coach them to grow.”

Vela’s guards controlled the tempo of the game throughout the evening while carrying the load offensively. Senior Ariel Rodriguez scored a game-high 24 points, 16 of which came in the first half.

“Our mentality was to come in and defend the district title,” Rodriguez said. “We came in gunning.”

Though Rodriguez’s shooting touch went away in the second half, her teammates filled in. Senior Maranda Washington scored all eight of her points in the final two quarters, and sophomore point guard Jaida Muhammud put up 7 of her nine points.

“In my estimation, (Muhammud) is the best player on (Vela),” Whitaker said. “She’s probably the best player in the Valley. I haven’t seen anyone that quick in the Valley. She’s very good.”

Although the Lady Sabercats (9-7, 1-0 District 31-5A) won by 16 points, Sharyland (12-9, 0-1) was close throughout much of the contest, and led 40-36 entering the final quarter. The Lady Rattlers were getting close to the rim and hitting their open shots when Vela double teamed in the post.

An abysmal fourth period marred by turnovers and poor shooting doomed the Lady Rattlers, who only scored two points in the last eight minutes.

“I told the girls at halftime we needed to deny the post entry,” Vela coach Lottie Zarate said. “Because we knew Sharyland was going to go down low every play.”

The duo of Garza and Marshall, which combined for 15 points in the first half, scored a single basket the rest of the way. Marshall would eventually foul out with 10 points, allowing for Vela’s defense to zero in on Garza, who missed several easy shots at the rim.

“We tried to put our bigs on them and put as much pressure on them as we (could),” Rodriguez said. “We communicated more and we moved around more on defense.”

One of those bigs was freshman forward Bianca Cortez, who was admittedly nervous before tipoff, uneasy at the prospect of guarding a player of Garza’s caliber. Though Cortez only scored three points, she grabbed seven rebounds and held her own against Shsryland’s bigs.

“When we play San Antonio schools, we play (6-foot-3) girls,” Zarate said. “I tell my girls we play schools from the hills because they have girls that are tall like Sharyland.”

Sharyland will host Roma (11-6, 1-0)on Friday. That same day, Sharyland will travel to Mission Veterans (10-8).

Shorthanded Weslaco survives Roma in final game before district play

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

ROMAWeslaco High sophomore Maddie Ybarra didn’t score her first field goal until the final nine seconds of Fridays night’s game at Roma High School, but her late basket sealed a 39-34 victory for the Lady Panthers, who held off a resilient Lady Gladiators squad.

In the last game before the beginning of district play next week, Weslaco (18-3) was injured and undermanned. The Lady Panthers were without starting forward Megan Peralez, who sprained her ankle in a Laredo Tournament last weekend.

With the supposed loss of Weslaco’s inside presence, Roma coach Romero Rios commanded his team to take it inside early and often. Though undersized, the Lady Panthers limited Roma’s points in the paint with scrappy guard play and physical man defense.

“We were just putting good pressure on the ball,” Weslaco guard Angela Villarreal said. “We kept our hands in their face and made sure they didn’t get a clean look at the basket.”

The Lady Panthers had better luck than Roma in terms attacking the rim in the early going, but couldn’t convert on several easy layups. Amy Garcia missed seven of her eight attempts under the basket, and sat out the entire second half with an illness.

Villarreal lost her touch at the rim as the game progressed. While the senior scored 10 points in the first half on 5 of 10 shooting, she made just one field goal the rest of the game and finished just 6 of 17 from the field.

“I think it’s just lack of focus and lack of preparation on our part,” Fino said of the team’s struggle inside. “There’s really just no excuses. We need to put it together and we need to real quick.”

Villarreal led all scorers with 15 points in addition to six steals, four rebounds and an assist.

“This should have been a better win for us,” Villarreal said. “We just came out flat tonight.”

The Lady Panther’s inability to convert gimme buckets coupled with Roma’s 37-29 advantage on the glass allowed the Lady Gladiators to hang around. Though Roma (10-6) trailed by as many as 11 in the second half, the team scored 14 points in the final quarter to cut Weslaco’s lead to just two points with three minutes remaining.

“We were missing little assignments here and there,” Fino said of her team’s inability to close. “But ultimately, in the fourth quarter, we just had a brain fart, and we can’t do that.”

Senior guard Kassandra Rocha led the rally for the Lady Gladiators, scoring eight fourth quarter points while going 4 of 5 from the foul line.

“We gave (Rocha) better looks,” Rios said. “We spread the floor for her and got her more involved. We tried to find the gaps in (Weslaco’s) defense, and we gave her the ball when we did.”

On the night as a whole, Rocha couldn’t find her shooting touch and finished with 10 points on 3 of 15 shooting.

Though the Lady Gladiators trailed 37-34 with 20 seconds left in the game, Roma’s luck ran out on missed layups and a no call on contact between Annette Jasso and Weslaco’s Ashely Gonzalez who were fighting for a rebound.

“The referee called it like he saw it,” Rios said. “I didn’t see the play.”

Despite the close win, Fino is unsatisfied.

“I’m glad we were in this position because I know what this team needs,” Fino said. “(We need) a leader, someone who can step up and have the ball in their hands when it matters.”

Roma will begin District 31-5A play at Tuesday at home against Rio Grande City. That same day, Weslaco will start its tour through District 31-6A play by hosting PSJA North.

Upper Valley Swimming Notes: Memorial fights illness before meet

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

The McAllen Memorial swim team will be without several swimmers today at the Brownsville Pre-regional Showcase swim meet. While the holidays signal the nearing of district competition, the season also brings the unwelcome side effect of the flu.

Coach Roxanne Balducci has preached precautionary measures to keep her swimmers out of the doctor’s office and in the pool, such as getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of water.

“But there’s not much you can do,” Balducci says of her ill team members. “It’s kind of hard to stay completely healthy in a school with one thousand kids.”

Though she won’t have some of her top swimmers, Balducci hopes to see continued improvement from a trio of underclassmen who will see an increased role: Kaden Garza and the sibling duo of Joshua and Joseph Velasquez.

“As the season has been progressing, their times are dropping and getting faster,” Balducci said. “The three of them are all-around good swimmers.”

Memorial will have more than two weeks of downtime after the Brownsville meet. Swimmers will have a mandatory five days off to enjoy the holiday and recover, but Balducci is weary of the lengthy gap between meets.

“Swimming isn’t like other sports,” she said. “If you take two or three days off, it’s like starting from scratch. The effort has to be there on a daily basis.”

SHARYLAND SEVEN

Sharyland High’s girls swim team is measly in numbers. The Lady Rattlers have only seven swimmers on the roster compared to 40 boys.

“If someone sat in on one of our practices they’d think we were an all-boys program,” coach Tina Jensen said.

Despite their seemingly meager make up, Sharyland’s girls have consistently out-performed their own expectations.

“I’ve been super impressed,” Jensen said. “Every meet we go to, the girls come in third. Even at meets with (Class) 6A schools, we always out-swim them. My girls are beating out teams that have 25 kids on them. I can’t complain about their performance.

The Lady Rattlers will look to continue their strong performance in the pool today at the Class 5A Holiday Hustle pre-regional meet at the PSJA Natatorium.

“Most of my girls are sophomores, so they’ll keep building and getting better,” Jensen said. “Needless to say, they’re a real close group. They don’t have much choice.”

Though determined, Sharyland’s diminutive size has at times been a hindrance. Swimmers are allowed to compete in just two events per meet and the Lady Rattlers don’t always have the numbers to swim in every event. The relays have been an added challenge as well.

“We’re working (the relays) a little bit harder,” Jensen said. “And the girls do the best they can at that time. It gives them another opportunity to see how good they are or see how much more motivation they need.”

REST VS. RUST

While many Valley swim teams will compete in Brownsville and Pharr this weekend, Edinburg High will be staying home, a conscious decision by coach Oscar Garza.

“I purposefully did this so we could focus on the little things that need to get improved,” Garza said. “We can reevaluate our goals and see who needs to get better and what we need to accomplish.”

The next meet for the Cougars won’t come until Jan. 9 in Galveston. By then, the team will have had 34 days between competitions. Garza says he isn’t concerned about the lengthy break, but he is cognizant of the balance between having a rested team and a rusted one.

“I’m not going to allow my kids to regress,” Garza said. “But we don’t want to over do things that, in the long term, will hurt our swimmers. We have to be very diligent with what we assign the kids to do and not overwhelm them.”

#RGVHoops: Roma ready for rematch with Weslaco

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

The Roma Lady Gladiators will face Weslaco High for the second time in eight days Friday night. Though both sides are familiar with each other, the circumstances surrounding the rematch will be drastically different.

The previous matchup between the teams came in a 56-32 blowout win for Weslaco on Dec. 4. The game was the second half of a tournament double header for both teams.

“Bodies aren’t made for the wear and tear of tournament play,” Roma coach Romero Rios said.
Friday’s game will come after two days of rest and be hosted at Roma High School, where the Lady Gladiators are 4-0.

“Our girls are taking it in,” Rios said of the team’s preparation. “They know what their job is and they’re getting better every day.”

Roma (10-5) is loaded with upperclassman talent and starts five seniors on a nightly basis. The team’s go-to scorers are Kassy Rocha and Luz Gonzalez, a pair of athletic forwards.

“Our athleticism will be big for us against Weslaco,” Rios said. “We match up really well with (Weslaco) inside. It’s hard to exploit them though. They’re really well coached and are really experienced. I have a lot of respect for their guards, especially Angela Villarreal.”

Rios doesn’t see Friday’s bout with the Lady Panthers as a do-or-die situation, but does view it as a measuring stick for a team who is all in for a deep post season run.

“This is what you prepare for. We want to be in these big games, not only for the top spot in our district, but for the rest of the Valley. This is crunch time. There is no time for excuses.”

BUILDING THE OFFENSE

Before the season began, Sharyland coach Dale Whitaker was hesitant to diagnosis the long-term prospects of his team. The 18-year coach lost several young players to Sharyland Pioneer in the school’s split and wasn’t too sure what his team could do on the hardwood.

19 games in, however, and Whitaker likes what he sees.

“I think things are going good,” Whitaker said. “I think we’re like a lot of teams, just coming together. Overall, I’m pleased with the progress of our kids.”

Despite Whitaker’s optimism, the Lady Rattlers (11-8) are currently on a three-game losing skid, their most recent defeat being Tuesday in a 40-31 loss to Edinburg High.

“We missed so many easy shots,” Whitaker said of the loss. “And Edinburg shot 19 free throws and made 16. I’m not blaming the refs, a lot of those calls were because of things we were doing. Shooting 85 percent from the foul line in girls basketball is almost unheard of in the Valley. I asked (Edinburg girls basketball coach John David Salinas) what his secret was.”

Aside from the sloppy defense, Whitaker is looking for a more dynamic offensive approach in time for district play beginning next week. The Lady Rattlers are dependent on the interior duo of Maddie Garza and Ana Marshall, who both measure 6-feet tall, for the bulk of their scoring.

“We have one of the biggest group of kids in the Valley,” Whitaker said. “We just need to be more spread out in our scoring abilities. We’ve been relying on our inside game because those points are a lot easier to get.”

Sharyland’s final game before district competition is Friday at home against Mercedes. Whitaker has been keen to let his players know what the goal is.

“We have a tradition,” he said. “We’ve been in the playoffs 17 of my 18 years. Every game counts as much as the next one. (District 31-5A opponent Edinburg) Vela isn’t any more important than Valley View. You can’t lay an egg and say, ‘Oh, we didn’t’ play well.’ You have to fight for everything. It’s that time of the year.”

GROWTH SPURTS

Palmview’s second-year coach Anisa Reyna didn’t expect her Lady Lobos team to be this good, not in her second year, not when her team has little time over the summer to improve.

“This came out of nowhere,” Renya said of her team’s 8-5 start. “With the short amount of time we put into the offseason it’s hard to see the improvement, but we’ve been getting better and better.”

The speedy Palmview girls team is led by its guard play, including junior Samantha Gutierrez, who stands 5-foot-4 and is described by Renya as “the shortest girl on the team.” But what Gutierrez lacks in size, she counters with deft offensive know-how.

“She can slash her way into the paint or just jump-stop-and-pop,” Renya said. “She’s making big strides.
Another improved guard is senior Monica Noyola, who saw limited court time a year ago.

“Monica wasn’t ready for the system,” Renya said. “This year she’s maintained her stamina to run up and down the court and has grasped the concept a bit more. She’s become an offensive threat as well, her decision making has improved.”

Renya knows the Lady Lobos are usually an afterthought in the realm of girls hoops, but she’s hoping to change that come district play, when Palmview will look to make a name for itself against its 30-6A opponents.

“We’re looking at the McAllen Schools,” Renya said. “They are all usually very big inside, they’re a force to be reckoned with. We’re not going to take any body lightly. We’re just trying to take care of what we do. They only way to become known is to get it done on the scoreboard.”

Mission Vets routs Hidalgo, prepares for district play

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — Mission Veterans sputtered only for a few minutes in the opening quarter of Tuesday’s non-district game against Hidalgo at Mission Veterans High School.

The Lady Patriots committed careless fouls, were out-run on lose balls and couldn’t find their shooting touch. Last year’s team-leading scorer, junior point guard Ashley Smith, missed her first four shots.

For the remaining three and a half quarters, however, it was all Mission Veterans as the Lady Patriots defeated the Lady Pirates 67-35. Mission Veterans led by as many as 35 points.

Mission Veterans (9-8) generated many of its points in transition. Smith led all players with seven steals, many of which became open layups.

“She’s been playing with a lot more intensity,” coach Rafael Cantu said of Smith. “We try to stress (the press) on the defensive end because that’s going to open up easier shots. When the girls move their feet, good things happen.”

Smith was the game’s high scorer with 17 points, nine of which came in the second quarter.

“Our communication helped us tonight,” junior forward Rosa Silva said. “Once we talk to each other about a play, we just run and hustle.”

Rosa finished with 16 points and, along with teammate Didi Ibarra, was an interior presence Hidalgo had no answer for.

Despite the comfortable win, coach Cantu is still making real-time adjustments in preparation for the beginning of District 31-5A competition next week.

“During every time out I kept telling the girls the things we have to get better at,” Cantu said. “We can be a really good team. There are just certain things that we have to commit to.”

Mission Veterans’ district opponents include Edinburg Vela, Roma, Sharyland HIgh, Sharyland Pioneer and Valley View.

Cantu is primarily focused on the team’s prolonged defensive intensity, as their heavy reliance on the press at times equates to fatigue.

“Playing like that isn’t easy,” Cantu said.

Though Hidalgo (7-7) was never close, the Lady Pirates view Tuesday’s loss as another opportunity to get in shape for their own district schedule. Coach Saul Arjona has purposefully scheduled his Class 4A program against the bigger schools in the Valley to better prepare them.

“We’ve played (McAllen) Rowe, Eidnrbug North, and now (Mission Veterans),” Arjona said. “We haven’t played any one from our level. That’s what’s going to help this girl get better.”

This girl would be his daughter and starting point guard Ashely Arjona, a freshman with budding skills as a ball handler and penetrator.

“The guards they have at the upper level are very defensive-minded,” coach Arjona said. “And she’s being able to handle that.”

Arjona’s passing skills are already so polished, the team has had to adjust its style of offense to accommodate.

“We’ve never had a point guard like her,” coach Arjona said. “Our offense used to be perimeter pass, perimeter pass and another perimeter pass. Now, I’m telling my post girls to be ready for a pass, because it’s coming for them.”
