Donna High, Weslaco East playing Friday for different reasons

BY JON. R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

On Friday, the Donna High Bravettes will drive to Mercedes to play the Lady Tigers in a game that will be trivial but important, a throw away yet a chance to improve. The point of view depends on which coach you talk to.

“It wasn’t my idea,” Bravettes coach Kevin Kromer said. “Put it that way.”

Donna and Mercedes each won a share of the District 32-5A title after finishing 13-1 in district play and splitting the season series. That circumstance cannot change. When Kromer and Mercedes coach Marissa Gutierrez met on Wednesday, it was to discuss seeding possibilities for the post season.
Kromer wanted a simple coin toss to break the tie, Gutierrez, however, wanted to play.

“What better way to go into the playoffs than with great competition?” Gutierrez asked. “We wanted to play a tough game.”

When the coaches could not reach an agreement, a seeding game was arranged — as written in the district handbook.

Kromer, fearing the risk of injuries, says he will bring his varsity team, but they will be dressed in street clothes and watch from the stands to cheer the junior varsity squad.

“I wouldn’t send the camera crew over,” Kromer said. “Don’t waste time watching it.”

For Gutierrez, injuries are ever-present and says, “injuries are going to happen regardless,” before adding, “that’s not to say we don’t care about the kids.” Instead, she wants another opportunity for her team to get better.

“I’m looking for better ball movement, doing the little things,” Gutierrez said. “We’ll just do our part and focus on us.”

The winner of Friday’s game will face Sharyland High in the bi-district round while the losing team will play Roma.

ONE MORE CHANCE

On the same evening Kevin Kromer will play it safe, his brother will not have the same luxury. Coach William Kromer and the Weslaco East Lady Wildcats will travel to Edinburg Economedes High School to play the Lady Jaguars in a playoffs-or-bust game in District 31-6A.

The winner secures the district’s final postseason spot and will face Harlingen High in the bi-district round. The loser stays home. Both teams finished 5-7 in district competition and split the season series.

“It makes this season even better for us if we’re able to battle through this and make the playoffs,” William said. “The seniors I have are not rookies to the playoffs. There’s history and tradition (at Weslaco East) They’re trying to get there. They don’t want to be the team that misses the playoffs.”

McAllen Rowe wins District 30-6A title with win over La Joya Palmview

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

McALLEN — The last instruction given by McAllen Rowe Lady Warriors girls basketball coach Raul Vega on Friday night was directed at the scoreboard operator.

“Hold on to that ball,” he said.

Vega wanted a memento after his team’s impressive 52-21 home win over the La Joya Palmview Lady Lobos to secure the District 30-6A championship.

“It’s a reminder to remind me years from now of the girls that I had and how hard they worked to get to where they’re at,” Vega said. “That’s what I’m most proud of.”

Rowe’s goal this season was not necessarily to win district, however. The Lady Warriors would have been pleased simply with securing a postseason berth. That was before they won 16 of 18 – including a sweep of district runner-up Palmview.

“Every game (this year), we went in not knowing what was going to happen,” Rowe forward Ryela Rodriguez said between bites of celebratory pizza. “We just went (into games) and played and things just stared working for us.”

Indeed, everything did work for Rowe on Friday.

The Lady Warriors never trailed against Palmview, who were playing for the chance to create a first-place tie with one game remaining in the regular season. Junior guard Deanna Spear scored the first bucket and Rowe never trailed.

Spear, a quick-footed defender, scored 8 points and was tasked with guarding Palmview’s Samantha Gutierrez, the Lady Lobos’ most potent offensive threat.

“It’s intense,” Spear said of guarding an opposing guard of similar speed. “It’s never an easy thing to do. You can’t take a break for a little second because they’re going to get by you.”

Gutierrez, who averages over 16 points per game, was held 5. Her teammate, senior guard Monica Noyola, was limited to 6. Both were routinely flustered by Rowe’s stingy defenders, who cut off passing lanes and hounded the ball. Through three quarters, Palmview was held to just 15 points while Rowe equaled that total in the second quarter alone.

It’s that tough-minded mixture of defense and speed which has spurred Rowe’s run from worst to first.

“The kids played tough tonight,” Vega said. “Our defense created some easy buckets for us, and that gave us a little bit of a lead to stretch (Palmview) out and get them out of their comfort zone. They played as well as I could have asked for.”

Rowe’s march to a district title began inconspicuously. The team mustered six victories last season and was relegated to the district’s basement. The roster was full of youth but was absent varsity experience.

“We went through a lot of obstacles last season,” junior forward Mayda Garcia said. “A lot of the girls have improved and I’m proud of them.”

Garcia led the Lady Warriors (20-12, 10-1) in scoring with 17 points, and cheered on the reserves from the bench in the final minutes.

Though Palmview (19-10, 8-3) will have to wait another year to compete for a district title, the Lady Lobos have nonetheless made history of their own. Despite the loss, the program is guaranteed its first post season appearance.

“We’ve done the best that we can with what we have,” Palmview coach Anisa Reyna said. “Regardless, we’ve had a great season and we’re on the way to legitimacy in this district.”

Roma’s Jocelyn Martinez is the fastest Valley girl in the pool

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

Jocelyn Martinez understood what was asked of her, but was dubious as to whether or not she could accomplish the task at hand.

The junior member of the Roma Gladiators swim team stood on a diving block at the Pharr Aquatics Center during the District 32-5A Swimming and Diving Championships. Martinez watched helplessly as the Sharyland High Rattlers relay team amassed a five second lead over Roma in the girls 400-yard freestyle relay. Martinez, the anchor, would be the last Gladiator to enter the water — the desperate team’s last hope for a gold medal.

With her goggles and cap tightly bound to her head, Martinez darted into the water with a mixture of grace and fortitude. She had only 100 yards to catch Sharyland’s Andrea Valdez.

“Oh no,” a Sharyland assistant coach moaned. “We don’t have a big enough lead.”

In methodical fashion, Martinez efficiently and ruthlessly tore through the pool with a level of exactness so remarkable it caused the Rattlers coaching staff to surrender the relay while they still held the top spot.

With 50 yards remaining, Martinez pulled even with Valdez before swimming away at the relay’s conclusion to hand Roma a first place finish with a time of 4 minutes, 4.24 seconds, good enough to beat Sharyland by a 1.26 second margin.

“It was really hard,” Martinez said. “At 50 (yards), I saw I was catching up to (Valdez). I told myself, ‘Let’s just do it.’”

Martinez’s performance in the 400 freestyle relay helped earn the 17-year-old the Female Athlete of the Meet honors. She won first place in every event in which she competed, including the 100 and 200 freestyle. Her perfect day in the pool propelled her to this week’s regional competition in Corpus Christi.

Not bad for a rookie.

Though Martinez is competing in her first year on the varsity team, she is far from a novice. In fact, the native of Monterrey, Mexico has arguably the most extensive background of any swimmer in the Valley.

Martinez began swimming when she was 7 years of age after her father, who can’t swim, encouraged her to learn. She also participated in diving and gymnastics, but says she stuck with the pool because of “adrenaline.”

“I like getting first place,” Martinez said. “I like that feeling of everything I work for showing.”

Though she learned to love the pool in landlocked Monterrey, Martinez undertook a more adventurous aquatic endeavor in the form of open water swimming, competing in the ocean waters of Cancun and Acapulco.

“I like swimming in the ocean,” she said. “You swim and you don’t see anything. It’s not like here where you swim back-and-forth four times. There’s no line. You make your own path.”

Martinez was 13 when she first swam in the ocean for a meet and was rudely introduced to the highly competitive, and highly confrontational, world of open water competition.

“It’s hard because everyone is pushing you and they push your head,” Martinez said. “It was only a 100-meter race, and I started crying because girls pushed my head under water. These girls had swam in the ocean for three years and they were on the same team. One girl was on my left and the other was on my right, and they just came after me. I was just like, ‘No don’t. Please just pass me. I don’t want to win. I just want to finish.’”

Finish she did, dejected and dour. But her desire remained despite it all.

“It’s really hard to swim in the ocean. But if you like swimming, you’re going to do it no matter what,” Martinez said. “I wanted to do it, so I wanted to train for it.”

Martinez moved to Roma this year, but was already familiar with the school’s swim program and its coach, Calvin Snyder. Snyder came to know of Jocelyn through her older sister Pamela, who was a member of the Gladiators swim team.

Martinez brings with her not just the experience of a childhood spent in the water, but a firm sense of determination to win. For her, swimming is more than an extracurricular activity, it’s a means by which she defines herself.

“I feel like for some kids in the Valley, it’s not a sport. It’s just a class they have to pass,” she said. “(Schools) need to motivate them more. They don’t care. They’ll miss a practice and act like it’s no big deal.”

It’s that very all-or-nothing attitude which endears Martinez to her coaches, who at times have to rein in her spirited ambition.

“She always says, ‘Coach I want to break my record,’ I tell her everything else comes with the training,” Roma assistant coach Omar Mireles said. “If you train hard and you work hard then you’ll get one.”

At the district championships in Pharr, Martinez eyed a pool record of under 2:00.0 in the 200 freestyle. Though she won gold in the event by more than 10 seconds, her final time was 2:00.07.

“She told me, ‘Coach, I swam ugly today,’ That’s just the way she thinks.” Mireles said. “I told her she didn’t, that she had another shot and to just relax.”

Though Martinez is comfortable with long-distance swimming, and has swum the 5K in Mexico as well as the 500-yard freestyle for Roma, Snyder deliberately placed her in shorter events with an eye towards getting his fastest swimmer to state competition.

This weekend, Martinez will once again swim with a sense of urgency, as if the weight of the entire ocean were on her back. All the while however, she’ll look to do what she did in Pharr – dominate while making the whole thing look easy.

Edinburg High boys, Weslaco High girls win District 31-6A swimming titles

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — Oscar Garza didn’t see it, he only heard about it through an observant parent after the fact. The Edinburg High Bobcats swimming coach was too busy focusing on his boys team in the 200-yard freestyle relay Saturday at the Weslaco ISD Aquatic Center.

But while Garza cheered his Bobcats to a first place finish with a time of 1 minute 42.36 seconds, an equally significant event occurred in the neighboring lane. The Weslaco High Panthers, Edinburg’s biggest competition throughout the afternoon, were disqualified. Judges waved the Panthers’ relay attempt after Isaiah Crouse entered the pool before teammate Francisco Cerda touched the wall.

The error negated what would have been a second-place Weslaco finish, and cleared the way for the Bobcats boys to take first place during the District 31-6A Swimming and Diving Championships. Edinburg edged the Panthers 106 points to 95 in the final boys standings.

Though Weslaco faulted, that’s not to say the Edinburg High boys didn’t earn their trophy. The team was consistent for the entirety of the meet. Aside from the 500-yard relay, the Bobcats finished in the top four in every event they competed in.

Junior David Garza, who was named Male Athlete of the Meet, won the gold medal in both the 200 freestyle (2:01.94) and the 100 freestyle (54.38).

“This has been the most stressful week of my life, not going to lie” David said. “I was nervous. Even if I’ve swam since sixth grade, I’m nervous every competition. But I have to let it all out and relax.”

David’s teammate, freshman Allison Tacderas, was awarded Female Athlete of the Meet after winning the 50 freestyle (27.11) and the 100 freestyle (1:01.65).

For coach Garza, Saturday was the culmination of a meticulous gameplan. He says it took him four hours to strategize for the meet, selecting which swimmers would participate in which event.

Though the Weslaco boys fell short, the Lady Panthers won top prize in the girls competition with 108 points. The highlight for the team came during the 200 freestyle relay with a first-place time of 1:52.24 – setting a new school record.

“All year, they’ve been very determined to get (the record),” Weslaco swimming coach Justin Esparza said. “I told them that in order to get it, they need to do certain things. Every single meet I was on top of them and making sure they were on top of themselves.”

The Lady Panthers’ first place showing as a team came in spite of winning just one individual event – Morgan Parker in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:16.80. Rather than striking gold, Weslaco’s girls collected a plethora of silver and bronze.

“Every top three, there was typically more than one Weslaco,” Esparza said. “I knew they were doing they’re job. This is what they’ve been working so hard for. That was awesome. That brought a lot of joy.”

PSJA North swimming, in just its second year of existence, placed second thanks in part to a strong showing from junior Yeye Rodriguez, who won gold in the 200 IM (2:47.44) and the 100 butterfly (1:15.51).

Varsity swimmers and relay teams who placed in the top six in their respective events will participate at regional competition next week at the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center in Brownsville.
