PSJA Southwest boys, Mercedes girls repeat as District 32-5A champions

PSJA High’s Jackie Alanis advances to regionals in three events

PHARR — Harunobu Akiyama always said he’d win the 100-meter dash. Not only would he cross the stripe first, he’d beat teammate Raul Rivas in the process.

While Akiyama got his wish Saturday at PSJA Stadium, reality didn’t match his dreams. While the PSJA Southwest junior envisioned running alongside his mentor to the finish line, a mid-race injury left Rivas bloody, bruised and writhing in pain.

As Akiyama took gold in the 100 in 11.21 seconds, Rivas remained on the hot track surface with what is likely a left hamstring injury. While Akiyama collected his medal atop the podium, Rivas rode in the back of a cart to the trainer’s tent.

“After the race, he told me he almost stopped to come back and pick me up,” Rivas, a senior, said. “I’m glad he didn’t. This is his moment. This was his time to win.”

Akiyama’s night also belongs to the rest of the PSJA Southwest boys team. Behind a surplus of sprinters, a long-distance stud and a freshman thrower, the Javelinas repeat as District 32-5A champions.

Akiyama’s victory in the 100 was one of two individual golds collected by Southwest. Ricky Cantu won the 200 dash in 22.86, reclaiming his district title in the event. The Javelinas also took gold in the 400 relay (with a healthy Rivas) in 43.59 and the 800 relay (with Oscar Garay racing in Rivas’ stead) with a time of 1:30.50.

“I always tell them to peak at the right time, and this is the time to start competing and running your best,” Southwest boys coach Ruben Moreno said. “You can win all the (pre-district) meets you want, but it doesn’t count. They had a good work ethic, and I just tell them to do their best. I never put pressure on them. I just ask that they do their best every time and the program has bought into it.”

The top two finishers in all events automatically qualify for the regional meet April 29 and 30 at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio. Valley athletes in Class 5A do not have an area meet.

The girls competition was once again dominated by the Mercedes Lady Tigers, sweeping the freshman, JV and varsity titles in back-to-back seasons.

Just as she did during Thursday’s field event finals, junior Jacklynn Flores demonstrated her athleticism and was an early spark for her team. Flores anchored the 400 and 800 relays during gold medal runs, and won the 100 dash in 12.67.

“She gave up softball because she just wanted to concentrate on track,” Mercedes girls coach Judy Gutierrez said. “So, after basketball season, we only put her in the long jump and the relays before she gradually started competing in all of her events. Since this was district, she knew that she had to pull her duty in all five events.”

Another notable individual performance for the Lady Tigers came from Marissa Lopez, winning the 300-meter hurdles in 50.26 after getting medically cleared to compete Monday. Lopez needed eight stitches in a knee after an non-track related injury.

Donna North’s I’Dasha Sorrell medaled in all three of her events, taking first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.24), second in the 100 dash (12.72) and third in the 200 dash (27.14). Sorrell placed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump Thursday despite competing with severe pain in her right foot that stems from an injury suffered her freshman year.

“She didn’t’ complain at all today,” Donna North girls coach Roy Corpus said. “I told her to just focus, calm down, relax and compete. I knew she was tired, she only had about an hour and a half to rest today, but I thought she did a good job. We’ve got another two weeks to get ready for San Antonio.”

Sharyland Pioneer boys win first district title in program history

Sharyland Pioneer, Mission Veterans shine on soggy first day of District 31-5A meet.

PHARR — Before the final race of the evening, and with the district championship on the line, plans unexpectedly changed.

The boys of Sharyland Pioneer led rival Sharyland High by five points in the team standings of the District 31-5A Championships heading into the 1600-meter relay. Crossing the finish line first meant the Diamondbacks’ first district title in program history. Any other result would leave things to chance.

But Pioneers’ Alec Garcia, the team’s best runner due to anchor the race, was pulled from the event after getting sick from exhaustion. Racing in his stead was sophomore Roman Garcia, who ran the third leg for the Diamondbacks.

Despite the reshuffled roster, Pioneer pulled through for a dramatic win at Valley View High School. Though Sharyland’s Jose Garza nearly caught Justin Romero on the back stretch of the final lap, Romero pulled away during the final 150 meters to give Pioneer the win in 3 minutes, 26.96 seconds, clinching the district crown to boot.

“I told (Roman), ‘You’re running. You gotta help us out. You can do it. I know you have the talent,’” Pioneer boys coach Thomas Lee said. “The kids were surrounding him. It was one of those times were the kids stepped up. It happens in sports all the time. That young man stepped up and we ended up winning. They all came to run today. That’s what the district meet does for each and every kid.”

Pioneer won a lone individual gold courtesy of senior Tristan Guerra, who won the 110 hurdles in 15.65 to qualify for the regional meet April 29 and 30 in San Antonio. Guerra also took second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.09. The top two finishers in all events Friday automatically qualify for regionals. Valley athletes in Class 5A do not have an area meet.

Friday marked a positive occasion for Guerra, who has battled inconsistent times and uneven performances in races throughout the season.

For Edinburg Vela’s Johnny Davila, however, Friday was more of the same. The senior anchored the 400 and 800 relays, giving gold medal performances for the SaberCats in each race. He then claimed an individual gold in the 200 dash in 21.93. Davila was a member of last year’s 1600-meter relay team that competed at the state meet.

“I had a great start in the 200,” Davila said. “I was hugging the curve and just staying on that white line and hugging the paint until I can get to the straight aways, and then I just kept pushing and tried to maintain at the end. That’s kind of what I’ve been working on in practice, hopefully it works out at regionals.”

While Davila did as Davila does, a new face emerged from the girls competition in Valley View’s Karla Ibarra. Though just a freshman, Ibarra took first in the 100 hurdles (15.50) and 200 dash (26.36), winning both races in close fashion. Ibarra beat Pioneer’s Rebeca Martinez, the defending champ in the 200, by .16 seconds.

The Lady Tigers won three individual golds on the evening, the most of any girls team.

“Towards the end of the season lately, she’s really been starting to focus a lot more,” Valley View girls coach Anthony Pinal said. “And that’s been the difference for her tonight, just focusing on what she wants and know that she has a lot of potential and talent.”

But while Valley View saw flashes of its future, the present belonged to Mission Veterans Memorial, who won its second district title in three years with 136 points, beating last year’s champion Sharyland Pioneer — who finished second with 115.50.

The Lady Patriots won the 400 and 1600 relays, but made up for a lackluster showing in the 800 relay with a strong performance in the open quarter mile. It was during that race in which Mariah Gonzalez took first in 58.12, and teammates Nyla Vela and Maria Gonzalez placed fourth and fifth respectively.

“The kids really made a statement in the (400),” Veterans girls coach Kathy Howell said. “… I think that was the turning point for us. We fell a little bit, but then we just needed to keep scoring. Sometimes they put it together, sometimes they don’t. You never know what can happen, so you’ve got to be prepared.”

McGowen has record day on first day of District 30-6A meet

McALLEN — During Thursday’s District 30-6A track finals, a refocused and reenergized Hinojosa delivered her best run of the season in the girls 200-meter dash, winning her signature event in 25.89 seconds.
Hinojosa’s standout performance was one of several for the Lady Lobos, who clinched their second straight district title. Palmview won four individual gold medals and placed first in two out of three relay events.

“We all just came in here with goals today,” Hinojosa said. “I wanted this race so bad because of how hard I’ve had to work to get back to where I was. I’m just glad the effort paid off.”
The top four finishers in each event automatically qualify for the area meet April 22 and 23 at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Hinojosa’s go in the 200 pitted her against McAllen Memorial’s Natalie Young, who entered the event with the fastest preliminary time. Though Hinojosa clipped Young by .31 seconds, the race was a microcosm of the girls competition. While Memorial entered as a contender for the team title, a bad exchange in the 400 relay and even worse exchange in the 800, cost the Lady Mustangs.

While the Memorial girls had to settle for second, their male counterparts claimed the boys competition, winning the district crown after placing second at district a year ago. The boys won the 400 relay in addition to receiving a notable individual contribution from Michael Boltie in the 200 dash in 21.61.

Though Memorial’s gold count was light on Friday (two gold and one silver), the team was buoyed in part by its strong showing during field event finals on Tuesday.

“I’m pleased with the meet and glad we had so many kids show so well,” Memorial boys coach Tony Niemeier said. “We set a bunch of personal records and team records and improved times in a lot of events. We thought things would be close, but the kids pulled through.”

The night’s biggest spotlight shown on McAllen High’s Joshua McGowen, who swept all three of his events, including the 110 and 300 hurdles and the 100 dash. McGowen, who looks to compete at state in four events, has drawn crowds in the hurdles all season. His biggest audience, however, came in the 100 when he sprinted against Memorial football standout Trevor Speights.

The two athletes ran astride each other for the opening half of the race, but McGowen pulled away in the closing meters as Speights pulled up near the finish line. McGowen’s gold-medal time of 10.66 seconds set a new personal record as well as a new Valley’s best on the season. Speights ran an 11.04.

“I think whoever finished the strongest was going to win that one,” McGowen said. “I was just in tunnel vision mode in that race. I was just in the zone until the end. For me, it wasn’t me trying to beat Trevor. It was just two athletes out there trying to compete and do their best.”

And while McGowen’s go in the hurdles went like clockwork, he entered the evening with some apprehension after a scare during preliminaries Tuesday. During the 110 hurdles, the senior clipped the first hurdle with a knee, causing him irritation for the rest of the race. McGowen says the knee was not an issue Thursday.

PSJA High’s Jackie Alanis advanced to regionals in three events at 32-5A meet

PHARR — By Thursday afternoon, Jackie Alanis grew acquainted with the taste of sand.
During the girls triple jump, the PSJA High freshman landed in the pit with such force, she often came up spitting out grains of dust and dirt.

But by the conclusion of the field event finals for the District 32-5A meet at PSJA Stadium, Alanis tasted victory having qualified for regionals in three events, placing second in the long jump, and winning gold in the triple jump and high jump.

All top two finishers automatically qualify for the regional meet April 29 and 30 in San Antonio. Valley athletes in Class 5A do not compete in an area meet.

Alanis’ podium-topping performance also set a new personal record with a distance of 35 feet, 5 1/4 inches. She set another personal best in the long jump at 16-08 1/2. She won the high jump by clearing 5-02.

“I try to practice a lot as much as I can,” Alanis said. “Everytime I come out here, I just focus on how hard I work and the time I put in. I just felt relaxed today. I just kept going forward in my jumps and reaching and landing at the spots I did.”

Alanis edged Donna North junior I’Dasha Sorrell in the triple jump by an inch and a half. Sorrell jumped with an injured right foot that shot pain up her leg every time she landed in the sand. Sorrell says the pain is a side effect of an injury suffered her freshman year during basketball season.

The girls long jump was won by Mercedes junior Jacklynn Flores with a new personal best of 17-08 1/2.

The throwing events were a showcase for PSJA Southwest and Donna High. The Javelinas swept the boys and girls shot puts while Donna collected gold in the boys and girls discus. Donna’s Cesar Villegas won the boys discus with an attempt of 150-11 while teammate Yvette Tamez won the girls in 126-10.

For Southwest, freshman Diego Treviño won the boys shot, setting a new personal best on his final throw with a mark of 49-03 1/2. Treviño took the lead for good on his second attempt of the event with a 46-06, but aimed for a bigger distance on his last throw with the district title already guaranteed.

Treviño, a 6-foot-3, 260 left tackle, has spent his first varsity season adjusting to the new techniques employed by Southwest throwing coach Eloy Garza.

“In high school, it’s all technique,” Trevino said. “You can’t just chunk it out there. You have to know what you’re doing. I’ve really been working inside the ring, using my hips and everything. You have to attack with your hips and an open chest. That was hard to learn at first.”

Treviño’s teammate Tamara Castillo won the girls shot put with a new personal best of 35-04 1/4. Castillo rebounded after a lackluster showing in the discus with a fourth place finish and a distance of 116-00.

“Tamara really rebounded in the shot,” Garza said. “She didn’t have the day she knew she could have in the discus, so that was a chance for her to rebound. She’s a thrower. Regardless of event, she’s a thrower. She just to go out there and perform, and I think she did a very good job today.”
