Edinburg Economedes’ Emily Suarez happy to end senior year on healthy note

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

When Emily Suarez takes the court Saturday for The RGVSports.com All-Valley Showcase at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, it will mark the beginning of the end of her high school basketball career. But the Edinburg Economedes senior guard won’t have time to be sentimental. She’ll be happy to be on the court at all.

During a game against Weslaco High on Feb. 6, Suarez suffered a severe left ankle sprain in the early going of the first quarter. Suarez says she landed on a defender’s foot after jump-stopping for a pass. The Lady Jaguars would go on to lose 61-25, beginning a three-game slide which would eliminate the team from post-season contention.

“I knew I was injured because I couldn’t get up,” Suarez said. “I thought (it) might be my last basketball game. It’s kind of disappointing that it happened that late in the season. I had actually never been out of a game because of an injury.”

The mishap meant a short stint on crutches, which irked the cross country stand-out bound for TCU.

“The day after the injury I wanted to get up and go run,” Suarez said. “I’m always moving. I was hopping around my house on one foot because I was tired of crutches. Those three weeks (of healing) were torture.”

Suarez would play during Econ’s remaining two games against Edinburg North and Weslaco East, but saw her minutes heavily restricted. She finished with 9 points in both contests.

“It’s tough,” Econ coach Mariana Campos said of Emily’s decision to play. “Because as a parent I don’t know if I want my kid to play with that type of injury. But, as a coach, you’ve got 11 other girls looking at you like, ‘We need Emily on the court.’”

Though Suarez’s bum ankle derailed her senior season and the Lady Jaguars’ quest for the playoffs, the point guard prefers to see the silver lining.

“I think of it more as a blessing now because of everything that happened after that, like learning patience,” Suarez said. “I’m a very impatient person.”

Suarez calls basketball “her first love,” and fell in love with the sport at a young age while watching her older brothers play. She would make shot charts of their performances and was attracted by what she calls “the fluidity of the game.” Despite her zeal for hoops, Suarez lacked the games’ greatest uncoachable asset – size.

“I remember being (4-feet-6) and weighing 58 pounds entering freshman year,” Suarez said. “I was like a stick. (Then-coach Kelly) Garrett threw me out there like, ‘You’re going to be with the big dogs.’”

Despite being the only underclassmen to play starting minutes, Suarez averaged just 3 points and 1.4 assists per game during her freshman season. But the experience allowed her to mature mentally as she grew physically.

“She grew all the way to a whopping 5-feet-2,” Campos said in jest.

When Campos assumed head coaching duties during the 2013-14 season, Suarez says she took on a greater role within the team.

“I definitely had to be a little more vocal,” she said. “I was a leader my freshman and sophomore years, but coach Campos has allowed me to have more of a vocal role and in practices.”

Suarez’s junior year was arguably her best individual season, as she averaged 12.5 points, 4.8 assists and 4 rebounds and 2.5 steals. Behind those numbers, the Lady Jaguars went 11-5 in district play and advanced to the bi-district round of the playoffs where they lost 55-50 to Laredo Alexander.

“That was an amazing thing,” Suarez said of her lone postseason appearance. “I was super nervous. I couldn’t be more thankful. I remember freshman year we won one game in district, so to have the opportunity to play was great.”

For her senior campaign, Suarez averaged 11.3 points, 3.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds en route to receiving first team honors in District 31-6A. As Suarez’s prowess on the hardwood increased, so did her reputation within the Economedes school system.

“She’s set the bar high,” Campos said. “If you walk through our middle school’s locker room area, there are clips of newspaper articles, and lots of kids look up to her. I told her what she’s done for Economedes for all of those young kids that are looking up to her. She’s done that. Nobody else. No one can take that away.”

Friendly Rivalry: James Cole and Sean Landez compete for Sharyland High

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

MISSION — James Cole and Sean Landez hold each other in high regard. The Sharyland High seniors have been competing in varsity track since they were freshman, and describe their relationship in endearing fashion.

“We don’t even have to say anything sometimes to know what we’re thinking” Landez said. “Our relationship is just like brothers. He knows what I’m feeling. I know what he’s feeling. It’s awesome.”

Despite the pair’s bond, roughly 30 seconds are set aside each week when the twosome become opponents on the track.

“We’re basically friends until the gun goes off,” Cole said. “After that, we’re competitors. We understand how it goes. We just go out there and try to win.”

Cole and Landez each run in the boys 100-meter and 200-meter dash and rank among the Valley’s elite sprinters in both events. Cole holds the Valley’s fastest time in the 200 with mark of 21.83 seconds, and is second in the 100 with a time of 10.79. Landez owns the sixth and fifth quickest times, respectively.

“They’ll compete each other eating a sandwich if they could,” Sharyland coach Marcelino de la Fuente said. “Those guys love it. They’ll prod and mess with each other. They respect each other and it’s all in good fun. But when they get on the track, they’ll compete against each other.”

Though Cole gets the better of Landez during short distance events, Landez is a stand-out athlete in his own right. Landez owns the Valley’s best time in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.46 seconds, and is the area’s top long jumper with a distance of 22 feet, 4 inches.

For Landez, who also played multiple positions for the Rattlers football team, the goal for his final season is simple: Austin or bust. De la Fuente says he has placed both Landez and Cole in individual events this year as a means of showcasing their talents and maximizing their potential to qualify for the state meet. So cautious is de la Fuente in the run-up to district, the pair will see limited action today when the team competes at the Harlingen Relays.

“We want them nice and fresh for district,” de la Fuente said. “That way, they’ll begin peaking around regionals and, hopefully, state. They’ve earned it and they deserve it.”

Landez’s aspirations to compete at state have already been realize by Cole, who placed fifth in the 200 a season ago.

“The experience was overwhelming,” Cole said. “The atmosphere was vibrant. When I was running I could feel the excitement around the race. It just helped me go fast.”

Though both will continue their running careers at the collegiate level (Cole will attend North Texas while Landez will go to Texas A&M Kingsville), it is Landez who has sharpened his talents the most throughout his high school tenure.

“Sean was a bit slower when he came out of junior high,” de la Fuente said. “He’s really worked to be where he is. The thing about Sean is you have to tell him when to stop every day. You need to tell him to slow down and focus and not go crazy every single time.”

Landez’s vigor is a necessity, however, as he competes in the 400, which the team referrs to as “The Man-Maker.”

“That race decides whether you’re still a boy or whether you’ll step up to the plate,” Landez said. “It’ll really tire you out. It’s just a full-out sprint. Some people try and pace it, but it’s a dash. You really have to lay it all out if you plan on going to state in (the event).”

With Cole and Landez’s reputation comes the added pressure of success. Both athletes say they feel opponents gunning for them during races in an attempt to upstate the best in the Valley.

“It’s a great feeling,” Landez said. “It pays off to realize all the hard work you’ve put in. It’s hard to stay at the top, but it’s a good feeling.”

It wasn’t a good feeling for Cole last week at the Meet of Champions in Weslaco when Christian Perales, a Los Fresnos junior, edged him in the 100 by .05 seconds.

“I had a bad start,” Cole said. “He got a better jump than me and I never recovered.”

Despite the disappointment, Cole’s veteran experience allowed him to remain compartmentalized and calm.

“After he loss, he came up to me and said, ‘On to the next one, I have to do better in the next one,” de la Fuente said. “You can’t coach that.”

As both Landez and Cole possess a one-track mind in terms of their track-related goals, the pair will enjoy each others company the rest of the way.

“We push each other beyond our limits,” Landez said. “We both think, ‘Individual track meet, individual race.’ But we still want to get the best out of each other, and that’s really helped us. It’s awesome just to be running with your best friend.”

David Duty hired as Hidalgo football coach

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

Former PSJA North offensive coordinator David Duty has been reunited with the Hidalgo Pirates upon being hired as the team’s head football coach Tuesday.

“It’s amazing the amount of congratulations I’ve gotten,” Duty said. “I’ve gotten warm wishes from coaches, friends and family. It’s exciting. I wish I could bottle up the energy you receive on a day like this.”

Duty previously worked for Hidalgo as an offensive line coach before leaving for PSJA ISD where he also served as the girls power lifting coach. Duty left Hidalgo on March 31, 1999, exactly 16 years removed from Tuesday’s reunion.

“16 years of roots is hard to pull,” Duty said of leaving PSJA North. “It’s going to be hard to say goodbye, especially the kids. The PSJA kids are a tough group who do great things and are loyal to their coaches. I’m going to miss them and I’m going to wish them the best of luck.”

Duty, assumes command of a Pirates team that has sputtered in recent seasons. The team has gone 20-32 since 2010, and has only one season with a winning record (2012) during that time. What exactly ails Hidalgo has yet to be discovered by Duty.

“When you coach at the (Class) 6A level, you don’t see a lot of 4A video, because you don’t play them very much,” Duty said. “I haven’t seen them on tape aside from game footage or highlight reels.

Though Duty has yet to scout his new team and piece together 2015’s would-be squad, he will begin assimilating himself today when he meets members of the freshman team.

“I’m going to tell them who I am,” Duty said. “They’re going to see my last name and think I’m a white boy from up north, and I’m not. I was born and raised here in McAllen.”

Perhaps more perplexing Hidalgo’s lackluster results on the gridiron is the program’s recent coaching Carrousel which has seen four coaches come and go in as many years. Duty dismisses any notion of apprehension upon accepting the position.

“What’s happened in the past has happened in the past,” Duty said. “A lot of the coaches they’ve hired have been from out of this area, I literally live about four and a half miles away from Hidalgo. I was born and raised here. I’m not someone that is looking at Hidalgo as somewhere that is going to be a stepping stone. I want to work there. The Valley is my home.”

Weslaco High girls highlight Meet of Champions

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — What was perhaps the most riveting moment during Friday’s Meet of Champions track and field relays at Bobby Lackey Stadium began with a mistake.

During the girls 4×200 meter relay, a fumbled baton handoff between Brittney Cardenas, the third leg for Weslaco High, and anchor Angela Villarreal caused the team to fall several lengths behind La Joya Palmview’s Mirna Tamez during the final 200-meter stretch.

“I thought that was it,” Weslaco girls coach Pablo Almaguer said. “When I saw they messed up, I thought there was no way we could come back.”

While Almaguer resigned his team to a second-place finish, Villarreal turned the corner at full speed and began closing the gap for what would be a photo-finish. Though the clock timed both teams at 1 minute, 46.31 seconds, video replay showed Villarreal edge Tamez by a slim margin.

“I just tried to stay loose and relax,” Villarreal said. “Coach said you can’t catch her if you’re too tight… I could feel myself start to catch her, so I just stayed lose.”

Tamez, focused on her own team’s effort, did not know of Weslaco’s flubbed handoff, but could sense the drama of the moment in the stadium.

“I could hear the crowd start cheering and making noise,” Tamez said. “I saw (Villarreal) come up beside me, and I just put the burners on.”

Weslaco’s relay team would win gold again in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 4:01.06 without a repeat incident with the baton. Strong winds out of the south prevented the team from setting a new meet record, their intended goal, but Almaguer was satisfied nonetheless.

“Our goal is to win the district championship and to continue doing what we’ve been doing,” he said. “We’ve won district three years in a row. It’s about peaking at the right time. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

100-Meter Flash
Though Sharyland High’s James Cole holds the Valley’s Best mark in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 10.86, a poor start relegated the senior to a silver-medal finish, losing by .05 seconds to Los Fresno’s Christian Parales (10.74).

“Everybody has great athletes this year,” Sharyland coach Marcelino de la Fuente said. “After the race, James came up to me and said, ‘Let’s go, next race.’ He knows what it takes to compete.”

Upon crossing the finish line, Parales kept running in celebration while the rest of the competitors caught their breath.

“I was happy,” Parales said. “You have James Cole in that race, he’s a state competitor. It’s a tough race.”

Port Isabel senior Daniella Murchison set a new meet, and all-time Valley record in the girls shot put with a distance of 46 feet, 1.5 inches.

“She’s really focused,” Port Isabel throwing coach Johnny Galvan said. “One thing she talked about coming here was setting the meet record. She gave up going to the Texas Relays for this reason. She’s been trying to hit that 46 mark for a while now.”

ANOTHER GOLD
Zoe Alaniz of Mission Veterans won gold in the Wheelchair Shot put with a distance of 13-10. Alaniz won gold in the same event earlier this month at the Patriot Relays. Along with Weslaco High’s Joe Solis, Alaniz is the first Valley wheelchair athlete to participate in newly created UIL wheelchair events.

Injuries plague Economedes in loss to Hanna

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — Not much went right for the Edinburg Economedes Lady Jaguars during their Class 6A bi-district 6-2 loss to Brownsville Hanna on Thursday at Weslaco East High School.

Their defense was absent, their communication lacked, and the injuries kept coming.

“That’s what happens when you make mistakes,” Economedes coach Robert Garcia said. “We weren’t staying on them like we were supposed to. We were supposed to pressure, and there wasn’t that much pressure.”

Instead of giving the Lady Eagles a physical match, Hanna overwhelmed Econ with speed and a swarming defense that consistently blanketed the ball. It was the Lady Jaguars’ third-straight bi-district loss.

Hanna junior forward Natalie Garcia scored four goals, three during the second half. Her first came with 24:04 remaining in the first half.

“I was surprised she scored so much at this stage,” Hanna coach Eliseo Guzman said. “We knew she could score two or three goals a game for us, but there were a lot more openings today.”

Though the Lady Jaguars collected two goals near the match’s end, the outcome was essentially decided by then.

Adding to the sting of defeat was the pain of injury. Three Econ players suffered ailments at various points during the match, including Arandi Platas, a freshman who tweaked her right ankle with 17:20 left during the first half. Platas did not return to the game and threw off Econ’s game-plan.

“I had one offensive player to sub out,” Gacia said referencing Platas. “And then she got hurt. So I was like, ‘OK, let’s get some defense in there.’ You wanna make changes, you wanna make switches, but you don’t have any more players to switch. We made the switches, but it didn’t work out.”

The most serious injury occurred with 3:21 left in the second half when junior keeper Tiffany Benavidez collided with a would-be Hanna scorer during a successful attempt to stop a goal. Benavidez was slow to get up, appeared woozy while walking toward the sideline and was ultimately carted to the bench. Team officials did not comment on the nature of her injury.

By then, however, Hanna’s victory was all but assured. The Lady Eagles piled on five goals during the second half, including a pair of goals from junior forward Julissa Urbina-Salazar.

The postseason win is a first for Guzman, who is coaching in his debut season with the Lady Eagles.

“This has been going very well,” Guzman said. “We have a special group. There is a lot of excitement for this group. There is a lot of work that needs to be done, but they were really outstanding.”

For Garcia, the loss does not taint a season he describes as “successful.”

“We worked very hard this season,” he said. “It takes a lot of work to get (to the playoffs). The fact that we got here was the important part. A lot of teams don’t make it here. The fact that we’re here is a good sign for us. We’ll continue to build.”

Down to the wire: Brownsville Hanna clips Economedes in the closing minutes

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — If the outcome for Thursday’s Class 6A bi-district playoff soccer match between Brownsville Hanna and Edinburg Economedes came down to penalty cards, the Jaguars would have scored more.

During a heated match that saw both teams assessed red cards and seven yellow cards combined, the Jaguars lost on a late score from Hanna’s Jorge Cantu, a senior defender who scored in improbable fashion.

“When I saw the ball coming, I don’t know, but I never close my eyes when I head the ball.” Cantu said. “I don’t know why, but I closed my eyes and I felt (the ball) hit my face. When I opened my eyes, the ball was in the net. I was surprised. I wasn’t expecting it to be a goal.”

Cantu’s blind header occurred with 3:56 remaining and essentially sealed Econ’s defeat.

“We’re a good team and they’re a good team,” Econ coach Sam Gonzalez said. “They ran a play and it worked. It’s so hard to score in this game, so whoever gets (the ball) in is going to win.”

More surprising than Cantu’s late score was the fact it happened while the Eagles were a man down, the result of a red card penalty assessed to Oscar Cordova with 7:24 remaining during the first half for shoving an elbow into an Economedes defender. With Cordova sidelined, Hanna played 10 on 11 the rest of the way.

“I started walking from half field (on the scoring play), and I knew there were three or four minutes left on the clock” Cantu said. “I knew we had to score, I was like, ‘Please, let us score.’ We only had 10 guys.”

Economedes was dealt a red card as well after Cantu’s score. Luis Ortiz was ejected at the 3:38 mark during the second half. Both red-card instances summarize what was at times a physical game with plenty of verbal barbs traded by both sides. In all, seven yellow cards were assigned (four to Hanna, three to Econ).

“We knew it was going to be a physical game,” Hanna coach Reyes Prado said. “We knew it was going to be physical. I told the kids not to react to some of the things they were going to do, but even the pros mess up. I’m not that upset about it.”

For Cantu, the match’s chippy nature was the result of Hanna’s high expectations. The Eagles, who have six seniors on the roster, were state runner-ups in 2013 and have every intention of returning to the championship game.

“We have to make history,” Cantu said. “We have to repeat like we did in 2013. This is the game in our trip to state. Hopefully we get there.”

Despite the fact Thursday didn’t provide Gonzalez with the outcome he wanted, he’s nonetheless pleased with his team.

“I just ask my kids to compete,” he said. “If they came out here and played to their best, I’m O.K. with the end.”
