WESLACO — As the Weslaco High Lady Panthers track team huddled after a victory lap at Bobby Lackey Stadium to commemorate their fourth district title in as many years, the group broke by barking an apt description of the team’s recent success.

“Dynasty.”

The witness the Lady Panthers during Saturday’s District 31-6A track and field championships was to experience the Valley’s most competitive girls team flex their collective muscle as the march to next months’ state meet begins. Weslaco scored 211 points thanks to six gold medals and 10 podium finishes. The Lady Panthers swept all three relays and set a new Valley’s best in the 4×400-meter relay, the night’s final race, with a time of 3 minutes, 57.87 seconds – breaking their previous mark by more than two seconds.

“I couldn’t have been any prouder than to finish off the evening like that,” Weslaco coach Pablo Almaguer said. “We want to get to that state meet. We want to start running fast and improve our times right now. To lose 12 seniors from last year, and to have the doubters who said we weren’t going to do anything this year, I’m a firm believer that you continue to have success by just working hard.”

All top-four finishers automatically qualify for next week’s 31-6A/32-6A area meet at Bobby Lackey Stadium.

Individual awards collected by Weslaco came from Alyssa Deleon, who won both the 100-meter dash (13.00) and the 300 hurdles (46.85). Angela Villarreal, a senior, placed first in th in the 400-meter dash (58.62).

Other notable performances came from Edinburg High’s Alexandria Cruz, who swept the 800-meter run (2:14.02) and 1600-meter run (5:06.74). Weslaco East’s Caitlin Alaniz won the 200 (26.63) and PSJA North’s Bianca Garza won the 100 hurdles (17.50).

The Weslaco East Wildcats won the boys district title for the second time in three years, outscoring Weslaco High 163-120. The Wildcats entered the day facing a 25-point deficit after Thursday’s field events, but took the lead for good after winning gold in the 4×200-meter relay (1:30.29).

“Kids have been consistent all year at getting better,” Weslaco East coach Tom Owens said. “This is something we talked about, but the kids just came out here and made it happen.”

In addition to the 4×200, the Wildcats also won the 4×100 relay. Jayven Cordova placed first in the 800 run in 1:59.58. Senior JR Villarreal won gold in the 300 hurdles (40.55) and ran with an increased sense of focus after placing a disappointing third in the 110 hurdles.

“I got into (the area round), hopefully I can make up for it there,” Villarreal said. “… I believe I hit the second hurdle. I hit it with my trail leg, so that threw me off for the rest of the race.”

The 110 hurdles was won by Edinburg Economedes’ Bony Rios (15.40), who was among three Econ athletes to win gold individually. No other boys team collected more individual first-place finishes. Other Jaguars to stand atop the podium were Carlos Vela in the 100-meter dash (11.16) and Ignacio Ramirez in the 400-meter dash (52.51).

RIO GRANDE CITY — James Cole’s march to Austin lasted just 25 meters. What was intended to be a gold-medal evening at the District 31-5A track finals on Friday at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium turned into a night of disappointment when the Sharyland High senior injured his right hamstring in the early stages of the boys 100-meter dash.

“I’m done,” Cole said. “My track season is over.”

Cole, who committed to North Texas for track last fall, came off the starting block clean but slowed down and eventually stopped while grimacing at the race’s halfway point. Cole finished last in the 100 and was scratched from the 200-meter dash and the 4×200 relay. He does not advance to regional competition next month in San Antonio and cannot compete in the UIL state track finals.

Cole’s teammate Sean Landez went on to win the 100 with a time of 11.42 seconds. Landez, along with all other top-two finishers, will make the trip to regionals.

“We were super fast,” Landez said. “It was our best start of the season. I saw him pull up during the race. It’s devastation for me. He’s my best friend. I just kept running for him.”

Cole’s injury disrupted Sharyland coach Marcelino De La Fuente’s hopes of hoisting a district championship trophy. Instead of the pair celebrating with the rest of the team at evening’s end, De La Fuente reassured Cole of his proud tenure with the Rattlers.

“The first thing (James) said to me after the race was, ‘I’m sorry coach,” he said. “I told him, ‘There’s not need to say that James. You’ve had an incredible career.’ That’s the type of kid he is. He never wants to let the team down.”

Though Sharyland would go on to place second in the boys team standings, it was the Edinburg Vela SaberCats who stood atop the podium as 31-5A victors. Vela outscored the Rattlers 166-135 and collected 60 points by sweeping all three relays.

The most impressive athlete for the SaberCats was Reagan Olguin, who won gold in the 400-meter dash with a Valley’s best time of 49.26. Olguin passed Landez in the final 100 meters to edge him by .13 seconds. Olguin also placed second in the 800-meter (1:57.12) and was an anchor on the 4×400-meter relay.

“He was very nervous because he knew the other kids were depending on him,” Vela coach Hernan Figueroa said. “It was a lot to carry for a young man. But he responded tremendously well. He won with experience. He won with heart and he did a lot for the kids tonight.”

Jonny Davila also won gold for the Sabercats, winning the 200-meter dash in 22.31. Notable performances for Sharyland High included Marcus Pena, who swept both hurdles events. Pena completed the 110 hurdles in 15.40 and the 300 hurdles in 41.23.

In the girls competition, the Sharyland Pioneer Lady Diamondbacks cruised to their first district title. The Lady Diamondbacks, a first-year program, entered the evening with a 23-point lead over Mission Veterans and had no doubt concerning the evening’s outcome. Pioneer swept the relay events and medaled in 9 of the evening’s 10 events.

“We’re not coming to get second,” Pioneer girls coach Sandy Guerrero said. “They all did their job. They’re pumped and they’re very united. They’re very supportive of each other.”

Guerrero says her team’s strong points are “field events and relays,” but three athletes won individual events: Jayda Garcia in the 100-meter dash (12.90). Isabel Mendoza in the 400 (1:01.2) and Kassandra Torres in the 300 hurdles (48.45).

DONNA — After the first day of action Tuesday during the District 32-5A track and field meet at Bennie LaPrade Stadium, the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets find themselves at the summit of the team standings in both boys and girls competition.

“Things worked out really well for the most part,” Edcouch girls coach Annalisa Limas said. “I would say almost all of our girls who competed (broke their personal record). They’re really young and they handled all of the pressure.”

The Lady Yellowjackets earned 47 points on the day thanks in part to a pair of gold medal performances. Leslie Alvarado set the tone for Edcouch early by winning the 3200-meter run in 12 minutes, 6.23 seconds. Freshman Marisol Segovia placed first in the pole vault with a height of 8 feet, a new personal best.

“I was scared. I thought I wasn’t going to make it,” Segovia said. “I touched (the bar) a little bit, but it stayed there and I was so happy.”

Segovia, along with all other top-two finishers from the meet, automatically qualifies for regional competition next month in San Antonio. Track finals are schedule to take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the same location.

The Yellowjacket boys amassed 62 points behind first-place efforts from Alexis Galarza in the pole vault (13-00) and Alex Segura in the triple jump (49-09.25). Though Edcouch only struck gold twice, the team saw five podium performances during the day’s seven events – including a second and third-place finish in the shot put.

Behind Edcouch in the boys standings are the Donna Redskins with 50 points. Donna tallied three gold medals, a meet best, and set themselves up for run at a district title on Saturday.

“We had talked about competing and being strong,” Donna coach Hugo Cervantes said. “Every body came out and did what was expected of them. We’re where we thought we would be after (Tuesday).”

One athlete who exceeded expectation was senior Ruben Rivera, who placed first in the high jump with a mark of 6-0 despite making his debut in the event.

“I usually compete in the long jump and triple jump,” Rivera said. “But the coaches told me they wanted to do the high jump to get the team more points. I’ve only been doing this for a week. I’ve had to learn a lot, like arching your back.”

Donna’s other victories occurred in the throwing events, which they swept. Brandon Cardenas rounded into regional form in the shot put with a distance of 49-03 while teammate Cesar Villegas won the discus throw with an attempt of 160-08, breaking his previous personal best of 154.

“I didn’t even feel (the discus) when it left my hand,” Villegas said. “It just came off my fingers. As soon as I looked over, the discus was already on the ground. I didn’t see when it landed.”

The girls throwing events were swept by Brittany Vielma of PSJA Southwest. Vielma won the discus with a throw of 124-9.5 and the shot with a try of 40-9. Though Vielma won, she failed to meet a personal expectation.

“I didn’t do my usual,” Vielma said. “I usually throw around 134 (in the discus). Today was just an off day. It was just me. I was just too into my head.”

Vielma’s teammate Victor Pedraza won the boys 3200-meter run in 9:55.13.

The Mercedes Tigers also showed well on the afternoon, including Jacklyn Flores winning back-to-back gold in the long jump and triple jump. Flores, a sophomore, won the long jump with an effort of 17-2, a new personal best.
