Upper-Valley track notebook: McAllen Memorial carries momentum into regional meet

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

The McAllen Memorial boys track and field team enters Friday’s regional meet at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio with momentum on their side. The Mustangs claimed the area championship a week ago in Laredo and will field nine athletes in eight events over the two-day meet.

“This is what it’s been about all season,” coach Marcus Kauffman said. “With the guys I’m taking with me to regionals, the goal for them this season has been to make it to state. District and area meets are nice, but this is what we’ve been preparing for all season.”

To qualify for the state meet later this month in Austin, athletes must finish first or second in the event in which they compete. Teams from Class 5A and 6A will participate in the San Antonio meet.

Junior Michael Boltie will compete in four individual events, including the pole vault and long jump. Boltie won gold in both events in Laredo and set new school records in the process. His first-place try in the pole vault came in at 15-feet, and his podium-topping long jump effort measured 22-06.75. Both marks are the best in the Valley this season among boys competition.

“(Bolite) is just a kid that’s worked his butt off,” Kauffman said. “He’s starting to get a little stronger. His body is starting to mature now. There’s no telling how far that kid will go.”

In addition to Boltie’s multifaceted talents, the Mustangs have a logjam of specialists in the discus throw. Anthony Esparza, Edward Pequeno and Lucas Rios will each vie for the chance to qualify for state, although one of them will ultimately be left out.

“It’s an interesting dynamic,” Kauffman said. “Those guys compete against each other all the time in practice and in meets. They’re all good friends, but when the time comes to compete, they all look out for themselves.”

Rios won the area discus championship with a throw of 164-06, the second-best distance in the Valley this season. Pequeno has the third-best effort in the Valley with a mark of 163-03.

GOING THE DISTANCE
The Mission Veterans Patriots travel to San Antonio with nine athletes competing in individual events, including a pair of state-best distance runners. According to Athletic.net, senior GJ Reyna’s time of 9 minutes, 30.72 seconds in the 3200-meter run is the best time in Texas among 5A teams. Reyna’s sophomore teammate Jesus Mata has the best time in the 800-meter run (1:54.61).

Reyna is aiming for his second-straight trip to Austin while Mata is looking to make his state meet debut.

“The guys are ready and focused,” Patriots boys coach David Longoria said. “I’ve been telling them to do their best. If they hit their personal record, everything else will fall in place. That’s been our big motto over the years. They knew what I’m going to say at the end of every speech. If we do our best, if we take care of our own, things will take care of themselves.”

Longoria is taking four boys athletes to Alamo Stadium including Reyna and Mata. Junior Jordan De Leon will compete in the discus and sophomore Luis Trujilo will participate in the pole vault.

4A MEET IN COPRUS
Schools in Class 4A will compete at the regional meet beginning Friday in Corpus Christi. Notable Valley athletes in attendance include Rio Hondo’s Mike Zuniga, who is the Valley’s best in the boys shot (55-03). Isaiah Martinez (triple jump), Julian Trevino (long jump) and Carlos Rodriguez (800-meter run) will compete for La Feria. Valley-girls will be represented in part by Port Isabel’s Daniella Murchison (shot and discus) and Gabriyella Torres (long jump and high jump).

PSJA Southwest’s Brittany Vielma signs with Northern Arizona

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

PHARR — A dream that began with emotion ended in similar fashion as PSJA Southwest’s Brittany Vielma signed with Northern Arizona University on Wednesday at the Southwest library.

The senior shot put and discus thrower was visibly emotional as she thanked friends, family members and coaches – all of whom surrounded her and watched as she signed her letter of intent.

“Honestly, from the very beginning, I did not think in a million years I would ever be doing this,” Vielma said. “So, when the opportunity came up, and the visits came up and I got to visit (Flagstaff, Ariz.), everything just clicked. It ended up being very surreal.”

As tears of happiness flowed, Vielma’s throwing coach Eloy Garza told of an off-season workout during last summer which became the catalyst for Vielma’s success.

“We were in the weight room squatting, and Brittany was having a hard time lifting,” Garza said. “That’s when she started tearing up. She started tearing up, but would not stop lifting, not until I told her to stop. When I told her to stop, she racked up the weight, fell to the ground out of pure pain. That’s when I new I had a champion.”

Vielma says she recalls that fateful workout “vividly.”

“It was one of my breaking moments,” she said. “It just hit me. I’m the type that I don’t want to show tears or weakness, but I just kept going. I can remember everything… It was one of those a-ha moments.”

Since then, Vielma has become one of the more notable throwers in Texas. Her season-best attempt in the shot 42-00, ranks third among all valley-girl throwers and is third in the state among 5A girls. She took home gold medals in the girls shot put and discus throw at the District 32-5A track and field championships earlier this month at Donna High School and will compete in both events during Friday’s area meet at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.

“I’m aiming for (44 feet) at regionals,” Vielma said. “I want to break the school record and set it even higher. When I was younger, I remember plateauing a lot. I would reach 25 or 30 feet in my throws and I would just stay there. But I kept working at it and getting better to where I am today. Whenever I get nervous, I tell myself that I’ve overcome obstacles before. I can do it again.

Northern Arizona is a part of the Big Sky Conference.

Upper-Valley boys struggle, girls succeed at 6A area track meet

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — Brandon Bradford could feel the competition, literally. As the PSJA North junior competed in the boys 110-meter hurdles during Thursday’s Region IV Class 6A area track and field championships at Bobby Lackey Stadium, he occasionally slapped hands with Bony Rios, an Edinburg Economedes sophomore in the next lane to his left.

“I just pushed,” Bradford said. “I wanted it so badly.”

“It,” was his first career victory. As Bradford and Rios charged toward the finish line after ascending the final hurdle, the pair raced to a statistical tie. Each runner finished in 15.56 seconds, but video review gave the gold to Bradford, whose torso broke the plane first. Bradford didn’t discover the race’s outcome until he walked to the scorer’s table.

“In situations like that, I tell him to focus,” PSJA North hurdling coach Joe Fuerte said. “Just stay focused and look past the finish line. Don’t run towards it, run past it.”

Bradford’s first-place time is good enough for sixth best in the Valley this season. Bradford, along with all other top four finishers, automatically qualify for next week’s regional meet in San Antonio.

As spirited as Bradford and Rio’s sprint was, it provided only a fleeting moment of competition for Upper-Valley boys teams who struggled against their District 32-6A peers. Area boys programs only won four gold medals on the day, including just two during track events. In addition to Bradford, Tristan Pena of Edinburg North won the 1600-meter run (4:29.26).

Perhaps no team suffered more setbacks than the Weslaco East Wildcats, who hoisted a district championship trophy last week only to tie for fifth place in the team standings with Brownsville Rivera. The team’s woes began when Angel Flores re-injured a hamstring and was forced to withdraw from the 400 and 800 relay.

“He pulled (his hamstring) slightly at the district meet in the open (200),” coach Tom Owens said. “We thought he was ready to go. He had us convinced he was ready to go. He looked good in warm up, and I think he was hesitant to push it, and you can’t do that at this level. From there, it was just a downhill spiral for us. By the time the 1600 relay came around, we were looking around like, ‘Who do we got?’”

While Thursday could have gone better for the boys, Upper-Valley girls teams and athletes flourished. The Weslaco High Lady Panthers comfortably won the area title over runner-up Los Fresnos (149-89) thanks another dominant performance in relay events – which they swept – and individual golds courtesy Angela Villarreal (400 dash, 58.27), Alyssa Deleon (300 hurdles, 46.54) and Sydney Salinas (pole vault, 11 feet).

The day’s standout individual athlete was Cierra Pena of Harlingen South, who won first in the 100 dash (12.23), 200 dash (26.16) and the long jump (18-01.25). Pena holds the all-time Valley record in the 100 with a time of 11.97.

Notable performances in the girls field events included PSJA Memorial’s Joan Cepeda, who placed third at state in the high jump a year ago (5-06) and won the area title with a jump of 5-04. Cepeda entered the day with sore hamstrings after a rigorous practice regimen leading into Thursday.

“I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” Cepeda said. “I only had one attempt at each height. I was ashamed I didn’t get 6 (feet). That’s what I did at regionals last year.”

Faith Olszak, a senior thrower for Weslaco East, set a new personal best in the shot put with a gold-medal attempt of 39-05. Olszak advances to her third regional meet.

In boys field events, Edinburg North’s Michael Cantu won the long jump with a jump of 20-09.5, and Raudel Alverez of PSJA North took home gold in the triple jump with a mark of 43-09.5. Alvarez Holds the Valley’s best in the event with a distance of 43-11.25.

Edinburg High’s Alexandria Cruz is all by herself on her quest for state

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG — When Alexandria Cruz crosses the finish line today at Bobby Lackey Stadium, she’ll likely find herself in a situation which has defined her track season — alone.

The Edinburg High senior distance runner is having one of the most dominant statistical seasons in Valley track history. At every meet and every race — be it the 800-meter or 1600-meter runs — Cruz crushes the competition and coasts to an easy victory. Her season-best time in the 800 of 2 minutes, 14.02 seconds is the second-best among girls in the state per Athletic.net, as is her 1600 time of 4:58.02.

When Cruz takes the track, it’s not a question of who will win, but who will come in second and how far behind they’ll finish. At last week’s district meet, Cruz predictably won gold in the mile run, beating the runner-up by nearly 20 seconds. On the surface, it was a good day.

“Everyone told me, ‘Wow that was a really good time. You did such a good job,’” Cruz said. “Actually, that was my slowest time of all season (5:06.74). My coach was pretty upset.”

While nearing the five-minute mark and running away with a first-place finish would elate most of her competitors, for Cruz, it was just “a workout.” The real test begins today when she returns to Bobby Lackey stadium in Weslaco for the Region IV Class 6A area track and field meet. All top-four finishers qualify for regionals next week in San Antonio.

“It’s kind of upsetting,” Cruz said of last week’s disappointing time. “But you know what you have to do to get better and you know what you have to work on.”

During practice, Cruz, who also competes in cross county, hones her skills by running alongside members of the boys team. It’s something she’s been doing since third grade when she outran boys in elementary school. Although smaller than her male peers, her coaches refuse to cut Cruz any slack.

“Just because I’m a girl doesn’t mean that I have to hit a slower time,” she said. “I have to hit the same time as the boys. Some of the boys are like, ‘Really, coach, she has to hit that (time)?’”

Running against her male counterparts allows Cruz to simulate the pressure of running at an advanced level, like the kind she’ll face should she qualify for next month’s state meet in Austin.

“She’s never made it so state before,” coach Homer Martinez Jr. said. “It’s hard. Hopefully this is the year. She’s got a real good chance. She’s there, she just has to go out there and do it, and that’s the hard part. When the pressure is on and she’s racing against girls up (north) that can beat her, she just has to stay with them. We’ll see what happens.”

The state meet will be held at the University of Texas, where Cruz signed to compete in cross country and track and hopes to study nursing. While running allowed her to attend the school of her choice, she says the recruiting process was stressful.

“They wanted to know a lot of things about (me) and they wanted to know it now,” Cruz said. “I was recruited during my cross country season, which means I had to race, go to school and make my visits, which was a lot. I missed a lot of school because of that and I was behind on my work. I was like, ‘You know what, I just want to get this over with.’”

Cruz says she received letters from Harvard, Stanford and UCLA, among others. Her first letter came from Hardin-Simmons, a D-III school in Abilene, when she was a freshman.

“I was really happy,” Cruz said. “Someone wanted me to run for them. My coaches said they had a feeling I’d be getting more.”

Cruz says she wanted to attend a college in Texas so as not to be too far away from home.

Martinez Jr. says coaching Cruz is an “honor,” and credits her work ethic and passion to get her from an unpolished freshman into a state-ranked athlete.

“It’s showing now,” he said. “All the hard work is paying off. She’s got a chance to go out there in the 800 and possibly win the regional meet. She never got down on herself all these years. She knows she can compete with anyone if she does her job.”
