Weslaco East’s Miguel Santos flourishes despite injury

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — Miguel Santos knows tonight could be last time he wears the charcoal black uniform for Weslaco East football. But fear of failure isn’t what motivates the senior linebacker to succeed on the field. On game day, Santos is consumed by a singular goal.

“Whenever I’m on the field, I tell myself ‘I have to get this tackle,’” Santos said. “It’s the only thing I think about when I’m out there. I just say, ‘This is my time.’”

Wildcat players and coaches alike preach of Santos’ value to the team. They won’t mention his stats, however. Instead they’ll describe his character with terms like toughness, determination and heart.
That’s not to say Santos’ numbers don’t impress. In seven games, he’s totaled 53 tackles — fourth highest on the Wildcats — on a defensive unit that’s improved from last year’s bunch.

Even more impressive, however, is the fact Santos’ senior season has been such a success despite appearing doomed before it ever began.

Santos had the usual expectations for his final year on varsity.

“You want to go all out every play,” he said. “It’s your last chance to play for your fans, your coaches, your teammates.”

But all that was jeopardized by an ACL injury suffered during a practice in May, when a lineman fell and inadvertently rolled onto Santos’ legs. Suddenly, thoughts of playing under the Friday night lights were as painful as his damaged ligament.

“It was hard,” Santos said. “I wasn’t going to get to do anything of the things I wanted to do.”
Unable to practice, Santos slipped out of football shape during the summer, all the while contemplating whether or not to have season-ending surgery. After discussions with his family, he decided to forgo an operation and attempt to play his senior year.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for his choice, because a lot of guys would not have played his senior year,” Weslaco East coach Mike Burget said. “And he’s played through it. I’m glad he’s as strong as he is, because he’s a special kid. He leads our team.”

Santos spent the offseason conditioning. He credits the team’s trainers for getting him on a workout routine and a running schedule that included plenty of treks up and down the bleachers.

During two-a-days, Santos performed light workouts and did not see game action until East’s 52-0 shutout of La Joya High on Sept. 17. Though Santos took the field on about 15 plays, he had to get used to playing hurt.

“At first I felt a lot of popping,” Santos said. “And now I don’t feel anything. I’m comfortable now. Coaches tell me I can’t play with fear. If I play with fear, I’m going to get hurt.”

Santos’ playing time increased game by game before receiving full snaps in the heart of the district season. Though East benefits from Santos’ leadership and tackling, Burget was cautiously optimistic about his linebacker’s production.

“A lot of kids couldn’t handle the injury he has,” Burget said. “For him to run, to cut, to tackle the way he does, it just shows you how strong and how much football means to him.”

Santos has at least one more chance to demonstrate his passion for the game tonight against Brownsville Veterans Memorial in a Class 6A Division II bi-district game at Bobby Lackey Stadium. Veterans enters with the best statistical offense in District 32-6A, averaging 413 yards per game.

Though East’s season is on the line, Santos is once again focused on getting stops and is at peace with whatever outcome occurs.

“I know there’s a lot of stuff about the injury, my senior year, the playoffs,” Santos said. “But given everything that’s happened to me and everything I’ve gone through, I’m happy to just be playing.”

#RGVHoops Girls Basketball Preview: Edinburg High’s Encore

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

EDINBURG Mercedes Hernandez’ eyes brighten when she talks about something as routine as the drudgery of practice.

“It’s fun,” the sophomore guard said. “I’m excited because we have so much to look forward to, and we’ve been waiting a long time since last season.”

Last season was one of surprise for Edinburg High. The Lady Bobcats returned just two starters and boasted a roster complete with seven underclassmen. But Edinburg found inspiration in its youth, winning 23 games, making a postseason appearance and earning the status as one of the Valley’s best upstart teams.

“We were supposed to finish at the bottom of the district,” senior post Jennifer Galvan said. “We weren’t supposed to make it to the playoffs, but we slipped in there. We beat some teams we weren’t supposed to beat… It was difficult, but whoever wanted it more, got it.”

The Lady Bobcats are led by sophomore Jayla Santa Maria, last year’s RGVSports.com Newcomer of the Year. As a freshman, Santa Maria demonstrated her versatility by averaging 11.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3 steals per game.

“She starts at our three, but because of her length and her ability to pivot in the paint, we can play her at the four, also,” Edinburg coach John David Salinas said. “There were times we’d move her to the one, and she’d start the offense. She just has a great IQ for the game. It’s exciting that she’s already had a year of pressure on her, so maybe she’ll be able to comeback and give us a little bit more.”

That little bit more includes improving the intangibles. Santa Maria admits to playing timid during prolonged stretches of games last season, and that bringing a pronounced mental focus into 2015 is on her list of improvements.

“I guess I just need to imagine that every game is in the fourth quarter and that we’re playing for our season,” Santa Maria said.

As Santa Maria’s skills are used in myriad ways, her offseason routine included working on post moves, ball handling and improving her mid-range shots. Santa Maria says she wants to increase her individual productivity across the board, especially scoring — a weak spot for the Lady Bobcats a season ago.

“I want to put more points on the board,” Salinas said. “We’ve been able to somehow get away with keeping games close by playing good defense, which should be able to give us some chances on offense. We’ve got some extremely fast guards. We’ll be able to get a little bit of transition points in that regard.”

Hernandez already notices a difference in the offense during practices and preseason scrimmages. Where the team spent much of last year getting used to playing alongside each other, Edinburg’s continuity is breeding familiarity.

“Last year, everyone was on a different page to begin the season,” she said. “Now, I don’t even have to look, but I can pass the ball and I already know that someone is going to be there. The chemistry is just awesome.”

With so much trust comes added roles. Aside from being a low-post presence, Galvan has become one of the team’s best communicators, barking out opposing screens for her teammates.

“Last year, we didn’t do a lot of that stuff until the end of the season,” Galvan said. “We started calling a lot of switches. Little things like that may not seem like they help, but actually it does, a whole lot.”

Each of the Lady Bobcats understand the space they occupy on the court and the responsibilities that come with it. Santa Maria is the best player, sure, but Galvan can be counted on for nearly 10 rebounds a night. Senior guard Reyna Del Castillo brings a solid defensive presence and led the team in steals a year ago. Junior post Natalie Roxburgh scraps her way to tough buckets in the paint when the opportunity presents itself.

“Everyone knows what their job is,” Salinas said. “You may not be the girl that’s going to get named in the newspaper, but if you do your role to the best of your ability, then everything is going to click.”

Five Other Valley-Girls Players to Watch
Bianca Cortez, So. Post, Edinburg Vela
As a freshman, Cortez hovered near a double-double on the season, averaging 9 points and 7 boards. This year, Coach Lottie Zarate plans to use Cortez as a stretch shooter.

Samantha Gutierrez, Sr. Guard, La Joya Palmview
A left-handed guard that’s nimble and fast, Gutierrez was named the District 30-6A Offensive Player of the Year in 2014 behind 15.9 points and 2.4 assists per game.

Ana Marshall, Jr. Post, Sharyland High
Marshall scored 28 points during last year’s bi-district win over Mercedes. At 6-foot-1, there are few players in the Valley who can challenge her one-on-one.

Belle Palacios, Sr. Forward, PSJA North
Led the Lady Raiders in points per game (13.2) and rebounds per game (9.4) in 2014 and was named the District 31-6A Offensive Player of the Year.

Ashley Smith, Sr. Guard, Mission Veterans Memorial
Smith was the third-highest scoring guard among UIL-Valley teams last year, averaging 14.8 points in addition to 4.2 steals per game.

Weslaco High beats Weslaco East for District 31-6A title

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

WESLACO — Though Weslaco East and Weslaco High are separated by less than three miles, their offensive approaches couldn’t have been farther apart.

The Wildcats bolted up and down the field Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium with speed, immediacy and flash. The Panthers powered and plodded their way to points on clock-killing drives.

Both were effective, but the fight for the District 31-6A crown turned on the game’s lone turnover. Weslaco High junior linebacker Jordan Nichols stripped East running back Emilio Tamez with 4:25 left in the third quarter, handing the Panthers the extra possession they needed to win 35-28, clinching a second straight 31-6A championship.

“It feels good, especially when we’re playing against another Weslaco school,” Nichols said. “This district basically revolves around Weslaco now. Weslaco High and Weslaco East are the top team in this district every year, but tonight, we showed the Panthers are on top.”

Weslaco High (8-2, 6-0) begins the postseason next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Bobby Lackey Stadium against Los Fresnos (9-1, 6-1 District 32-6A). The Panthers will enter with a six-game winning streak.
At the time of Nichols pivotal forced fumble, East trailed 28-21 and looked to draw the game to its fourth tie. But Nichols was at the right place at the right time.

“You can always count on him,” Panthers linebacker Austin Sauceda said. “He means what he says, and he plays like it, too. That guy plays with so much energy.”

Up until that point, both teams had traded punches. East opened with a 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from JC Vargas. While Vargas’ big play sent Wildcats fans into a storm, Panthers running back Brian Guerra was not quite as elated.
“It made us angry,” Guerra said. “It made us want to go out there and play harder. It motivated us.”

Vargas’ return galvanized Guerra to the tune of 129 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. As a team, the Panthers ran for 382 yards. The bulk of the Panthers’ production came on sweeps to the outside, an element which has not been a strong suit this season.

“It finally worked for us,” Guerra said. “Those types of runs really haven’t been there for us all season, but for whatever reason, they were there tonight.”

Weslaco first tied the game at 7 late in the first quarter when Jonathan Martinez carried the ball into the end zone from the 3-yard line. Martinez finished with three scores, including a 28-yard run in the third quarter that gave the Panthers a 28-21 lead they would never relinquish.

“The second half was key,” Weslaco High coach Tony Villarreal said. “(East) looked tired, and the kids told me at halftime, ‘Coach, let’s run right at ‘em.’ And that’s what we did, and ultimately, we scored.”

The Panthers graced the end zone on their first five possessions and did not punt until there was 5:23 left in the game. While Weslaco continued to score, East’s offense stalled. During the second half, the Wildcats fumbled and were forced to punt with their lone touchdown coming from Emilio Tamez to draw East within one touchdown.

“Our coaching staff did a good job and so did our kids,” East coach Mike Burget said. “We played a good team tonight, and we played with a lot of character. My kids have showed it all year. We had our chances, things just didn’t work out.”

The Wildcats (7-2, 5-1) opens the playoffs with a bi-district matchup against Brownsville Veterans Memorial (7-3, 4-3 District 32-6A). The game will be played at Bobby Lackey Stadium on a date that is yet to be determined.

QUIET NIGHT
East’s offense has been driven in large part by the play of Tamez and multi-positional athlete Ciro Rojas. While Tamez rushed for 131 yards and a score on 16 carries, Rojas was relatively quiet, finishing with 19 rushing yards and a TD on just three carries.

“We tried to take (Rojas) away,” Villarreal said. “We game-planned for him. I thought we did a good job of taking him out of the game, but we still got burned by (Tamez).”

ONE TOWN
Last year’s game between these teams ended without a midfield handshake. This year, Panthers and Wildcats alike gathered on the field in a huddle as a show of solidarity that transcended the gridiron.

“This game was about who is better, but it wasn’t about hate,” Nichols said. “We’re all from Weslaco, and we all want to do well for our friends and family.”

BETTER THAN IT LOOKED
Weslaco High running back Major Free suffered what looked to be a severe knee injury during the third quarter. Free’s leg bent in an awkward position and he needed help getting to his feet. He walked to the sideline under his own power, however, and returned to the game.

Free finished with 84 yards on 10 carries.

Weslaco High, Weslaco East at it again for District 31-6A title

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

It was always supposed to be this way. Two schools, one city, one district champion.

Weslaco East and Weslaco High have been the class of District 31-6A this year. Each team enters today’s game at Bobby Lackey Stadium with an unblemished district record, and each has consistently cruised to lopsided wins. The victor is awarded the outright title, while the loser enters the postseason on a sour note.

The Wildcats (7-1, 5-0), boast the best statistical offense in 31-6A, averaging 43 points on 403 yards per game. During its six-game win streak, East has outscored opponents 268-82. Making their production more impressive is the fact the Wildcats return just one full-time offensive starter (senior left guard Jonathan Banda) from last year’s regional quarterfinal team.

The offensive line has been the key to East’s success in 2015. Though running back Emilio Tamez and multi-positional athlete Ciro Rojas have combined for 33 touchdowns, each has credited the O-line throughout the season for their success.

“We’ve got two coaches that handle the linemen,” East coach Mike Burget said. “Jesse Treviño, our offensive coordinator, and Coach Sergio Martinez do an excellent job of working with those kids and getting them ready. They take pride in making sure our quarterbacks and running backs don’t get hit.”

Despite such heavy roster turnover, Weslaco High coach Tony Villarreal sees the same opponent, at least in terms of X’s and O’s.

“Both sides are pretty familiar with each other,” Villarreal said. “Both teams already know what the other team is going to do. But we like it that way. We like lining up mano a mano and seeing who can play the cleanest game without the fewest number of mistakes. That’s what ultimately wins football games.”

The Panthers (7-2, 5-0) have won five games in a row and have largely gone unchallenged in their pursuit of a second consecutive district championship. Weslaco have beaten 31-6A opponents by an average margin of 39 points — including a 56-7 win over PSJA North on Sept. 25.

Though tonight’s game will have no shortage of intensity given what’s at stake, Villarreal hopes a tough non-district schedule will pay dividends in readying his team for a game in which winner takes all.
“We’ve played in about four or five game of the weeks this year,” Villarreal said. “That’s why we play the Harlingen and Donna and Corpus Christi King and Harlingen South. It gets the kids used to playing in stadiums with a lot of people and gets them used to playing in a high-stakes environment. They’ll be ready, but it certainly won’t be easy.”

Win or lose, both teams are already guaranteed a home playoff game next week. Weslaco High will likely face Los Fresnos, while Weslaco East will likely host Brownsville Veterans Memorial. Burget uses the postseason as a means of putting tonight’s game in context for his players.

“It’s just a football game,” Burget said. “Win or lose, we won’t stop playing. We didn’t stop playing when we lost to San Benito. We went back to work and got better. Same thing with this game. We want to win, expect a clean game on both sides, but even if we lose, we know we get to play another day.”

Upper-Valley Swimming and Diving Notebook: PSJA Southwest turning into district title contender

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

PHARR — An unfamiliar team is making a name for itself during the early going of the swim season. Through just three meets, the boys and girls of PSJA Southwest have combined for 31 medals, including 22 gold finishes.

But just four years ago, the Javelinas swim team was nonexistent. Since their inaugural season in 2013, however, Southwest has morphed from an upstart into a contender for a district title thanks to budding in-house talent and the transfer of two skilled brothers.

“I grew up in the area,” Joshua Velasquez said of his hometown, Pharr. “So the transition was pretty easy for me. I’m used to my teammates, it’s like I get to hang out with all of my old friends.”

Velasquez, a junior, and younger brother Joseph, a sophomore, moved to Southwest from McAllen Memorial during the summer. The pair advanced to thestate swim meet a season ago, and brings with it speed and swimming know-how.

“We liked a lot of things that the coaching staff were doing,” Joshua said. “Everyone was working hard, but having a lot of fun while doing it.

Joshua specializes in the breaststroke and the butterfly, and won gold in both events at last week’s the PSJA ISD Fall Kickoff Invitational in Pharr. Joseph claimed first place in the 100-yatd backstroke and 500 freestyle at the same meet.

But it’s not the quantity of golds that’s impressive, it’s the quality. Each is posting some of the best individual times in the Valley in their respective events.

“We have a lot of younger swimmers on the team who are just now learning the ropes,” assistant coach Ben Waddell said. “With the brothers on the team, they help coach up some of those kids, but they also challenge some of our faster swimmers, too. They push everybody.”

One swimmer is Juan Meija, a sophomore who swims with the brothers in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Last season, Meija was an impressive freshman, but lacked an adequate sparring partner during practice to push him to better times.

“We were good last year,” Meija said. “Better than a lot of people thought we would be, but now we’ve got Josh and Joseph, and they’re helping everyone get faster.”

Other swimmers who have won medals for Southwest this season are Bets Hinojosa (silver in the boys 200-meter freestyle) and Lourdes Wisby, (gold in girls 100-yard backstroke)

FIRST GOLD
Edinburg Vela freshman Justice Rivera claimed his first career gold last week at the PSJA ISD Fall Kickoff Invitational. Rivera won the boys 200 freestyle in 2:01.18, more than three seconds better than the runner-up.

“I’m happy with first, but it’s not my (personal record),” Rivera said. “I swam a 1:57 back in the summer. I just have to get in shape and do what it takes to help out my team. I want to get better for the relays and be able to help them win.”

UP NEXT
Valley swimmers are back in the pool at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Weslaco Aquatic Center.

#RGVweek11 Thursday Roundup: McGowen sets McAllen High record in win over La Joya Palmview

RGVSPORTS.COM

McAllen High’s Josh McGowen broke the school’s single-game rushing record with 340 yards as McAllen High secured home-field advantage in the bi-district round of the playoffs with a 42-13 win against La Joya Palmview on Thursday in La Joya.

McGowen found the end zone four times, including rushes of 51, 59 and 99 yards. In doing so, he set the school’s single-season scoring record with 154 points. He also pushed his season rushing total to 1,814 yards — just 40 away from the school’s single-season rushing record.

“He did a great job,” coach Kevin Brewer said. “Every week, people scheme to stop him, and he did a good job of being patient.”

Mark Martinez notched two touchdowns for McHi.

Brewer said he was most impressed with the team’s defense, which gave up a decent total on the ground but made critical stops when it needed to.

“The defense played tremendously all night long,” Brewer said. “Palmview spent a lot of time in the red zone and we held them out on several occasions. On fourth-down stops and turnovers, we got lord knows how many turnovers. Four or five, at least. I’m really proud of our defense.”

McAllen High finishes the regular season 5-5, and 4-2 in District 30-6A. Palmview drops to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in district, but will still reach the playoffs if McAllen Memorial defeats Mission High tonight.

PSJA NORTH 17, EDINBURG HIGH 15: At Edinburg, Bo Adams rushed for a touchdown and threw one to teammate Saul Zuniga as the Raiders defeat the Bobcats.

“We won ugly tonight,” North coach Jorge Peña said. “There were too many Raiders looking ahead to the playoffs, including myself. We were focusing on next week too much. We had to fight hard to win.”
North (5-5, 4-2, District 31-6A) secures its second straight playoffs appearance, and will face San Benito on November 13 at Bobby Morrow Stadium.

Edinburg finishes with a 1-9 record, including a 1-5 mark in district play.

CLASS 5A
BROWNSVILLE PACE 31, PSJA SOUTHWEST 21: At Brownsville, Vikings quarterback Luis Rodriguez scored on three first half runs, and Pace withstood a second-half rally to defeat the Javelinas.

“We started slow, we started sluggish,” PSJA Southwest coach Jesus Reyes said. “We always preach about starting fast and we just didn’t do it. We dug ourselves in a hole and tried so hard to get out of it that we started to press and make mental errors.”

Neither team advances to the postseason and finishes with a record of 3-7.
